Book Description
This engaging and well-illustrated primer to the Upper Mississippi River presents the basic natural and human history of this magnificent waterway. Immortal River is written for the educated lay-person who would like to know more about the river's history and the forces that shape as well as threaten it today. It melds complex information from the fields of geology, ecology, geography, anthropology, and history into a readable, chronological story that spans some 500 million years of the earth's history.
Like the Mississippi itself, Immortal River often leaves the main channel to explore the river's backwaters, floodplain, and drainage basin. The book's focus is the Upper Mississippi, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Cairo, Illinois. But it also includes information about the river's headwaters in northern Minnesota and about the Lower Mississippi from Cairo south to the river's mouth ninety miles below New Orleans. It offers an understanding of the basic geology underlying the river's landscapes, ecology, environmental problems, and grandeur.
Customer Reviews:
Immortal River.......2007-07-02
This book is fascinating. It covers the Mississippi River past and present. It is more than just a history book, for it covers geologic time as well as modern history. But it is more than a geology book as it covers the river's ecology. But then it is more than an ecological book as it focuses on the necessity of the river's economy. To sum it up, this book covers the Mississippi River in a way that few books do their subject's justice. Reading it makes me proud that the river is part of my world here in the Twin Cities. I've driven over it, walked over it, walked up to it, pondered its power and might, but never knew the river until I read this book.
The river is three million years old. Man has been active around it for a few thousand years. Modern economies have influenced it for a mere 170 years or so. It is not a simple thing. It is a force to be reconciled with. What humans do to this river is profound, but only so far as our vanity allows us to understand our relationship with the river. It has had several sources over the years. It took modern white men years of guessing just trying to find the current source.
This river supplies our needs. It allows for barge traffic that come and go with products Minnesotans (or any of the other states whose boundaries it forms) need and make (or grow). We recreate upon it. We dam it, bridge over it, pollute it, draw water from it, try to make it conform to our wills, then wonder what went wrong when it floods (as in 1993).
This river truly is immortal. Calvin Fremling does the river justice by his book documenting its story. His writing style is pragmatic and relatively unbiased, though extremists (both right and left wingers) my suffer his ridicule. The Corps of Engineers, the environmentalists, the riverats, sportsmen, politicians all receive adequate and relatively accurate assessment and criticism by the author. If there is one person who truly knows the river, it seems to be Fremling. He leaves the reader with the impression that the river's age will allow it to survive inspite of what modern man is doing to it. Who knows, it may be around for another three million years. As Fremling concludes, somehow, I find comfort in that.
Immortal River: The Upper Mississippi in Ancient and Modern Times .......2005-09-17
As a person who grew up on the Upper Mississippi I assumed that I knew that great river. Not so. Calvin Fremling's book opened my eyes to the river's past and alerted me to the significant environmental problems that confront the river today. This is must reading for anyone who uses the river or has an interest in it.
Mentor, storyteller.......2005-01-13
Dr. Fremling, I will address this to you. You were graduate advisor to my dad, Glenn Jergens, when he earned his Master's degree. You were my most revered college professor many years later. Now I have my Master's and will teach biology when our son doesn't need me at home quite so much. Your influence on my dad, and on me, was profound. If I am half the teacher you were, much of the credit will be yours. I remember the slide-peppered lectures and the frequent field trips that made scientists of your students. I appreciate more than ever your gift for making learning so effortless because the teaching was so relevant and so rigorously planned. I have rated your book as worthy of five stars even before I've read it, as I suspect it will reflect this gift as well. I'm purchasing two copies, one for my brother and his wife, which will be passed around, I know, and one for my family. Thank you, Dr. Fremling, and congratulations. With all best wishes, Merri Beth Nord

Excellent Resource.......2007-01-11
Miller's book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about sailors' valentines. She thoroughly covers the history of valentines, in an engaging manner that imparts a good deal of information. She has compiled a large collection of full page photographs of valentines from across the years - just beautiful! We found a wonderful artist who makes sailors valentines, and chose several to give as gifts, with this book accompanying them. A great read and a visual treat!
A kaleidoscope of beautiful shells.......2007-01-09
A Fantastic book to take to the beach. You will never look at shells the same way after studying these "sailor's valentines." I just wonder what the recipients thought when they were presented with these incredible works of art.
Intricate Beauty.......2006-11-12
This book is a pictorial feast for the eyes. The folk art of Sailors' Valentines has been captured in all its historical beauty. The intricate detail of each of the pictured works is simply amazing, and as an artist and craftsperson, I truly appreciate the skill and beautiful symmetry as documented in this book. The colors and photography are superb and the historical background and information are clearly detailed.
SAILOR'S VALENTINE'S ~ Their Journey Through Time.......2006-11-03
I found this to be a beautiful book. The photography and skill of the artists featured is remarkable. It is an inspiration for all artists (whether just beginning or established) who lovingly work on or collect sailor's valentines.
Sailors' Valentines Their Journey Through Time.......2006-07-18

I have experienced a Nyung Na fasting retreat using this book. It was GRUELLING, and afterwards I felt FANTASTIC! The prayers and prostrations along with the fasting is a beautiful ritual that softens the heart. Buddhist ritual all has a subtle purpose and effect on the mind, this one is no exception. This retreat leaves a person feeling cleansed.

A real tribute for the King of Dogs.......1998-06-04
As a fancier and owner of four Afghans I really enjoy reading this book. Well documented, it provides all you want to know about the breed. My only regret is that The Book is getting old and no newest editions are on sight.

Book Description
In both developed nations and the developing world, there is a clear trend towards addressing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug problems through health and social services. There are several persuasive arguments for this shift beyond pure economics, which include comorbidity, cost effectiveness, coordination of care and effectiveness.
This is the first volume to pull together effective methods that can be used for addressing substance abuse through health and social service systems. It also integrates interventions for a range of drugs of abuse, rather than focusing on only one (such as alcohol). The book's international perspective also makes this a unique contribution to the existing literature.

The work of a truly gifted poet........2000-06-06
A Protocol For Touch was awarded the Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry and secured Constance Merritt as a truly gifted poet with a recognition richly deserved. Exile: The air is dry in the much-promised land,/And mountains whisper "this is not your home":/Still nights entice me like a knowing hand,/And strangers' hands have sometimes brushed my own./Yet milk, so sweet, turns rancid in my mouth,/And I can name no answer to desire/Since God is everywhere and I'm without./I taste the stone's sleek kiss, lie with each hour/And the dream of taking up my staff and rod,/Or no longer lingering weary at the door/My hands heavy with holy tears for God/Or some woman who always fails to come./But it's hard to leave the vigil once begun,/And waiting soon becomes much more than for.
Wow!.......2000-03-28
These poems reward the first reading with immediate joy, and reward each subsequent reading with continuing provocation and power. I love this book. I'm giving it to all my friends. Any woman (or any man, for that matter) who has wrestled with the troubling intersections of individual spirit and received authority will find in these poems a wealth of comfort and wisdom, as well as shocking realization!
Book Description
This authoritative guide leads adventurous travelers from shimmering lakes and monstrous peaks to remote hamlets and bustling tourist centers, and recommends where to find the best regional foods and products in each. The national parks of Argentina and Chile, plus whale-watching at Península Valdés, are explored in depth. Introductory chapters frame this diverse, exciting region in its historic, political, and cultural context.
Customer Reviews:
If you are traveling to Patagonia take this guide!.......2007-02-27
I have just returned from traveling five weeks through Patagonia and found myself using "Time Out" regularly for its engaging history, cultural and overall coverage.
I started out in the Argentinean Lake District (Bariloche) and wove my way down to Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia), crossing various times between Argentina and Chile. "Time Out" was my companion guide to both "Footprint" and "Rough Guides".
No other guide gives you as much information regarding outdoor activies: Hiking, Golfing, Fishing, Hunting, Skiing; even Scuba Diving (you can dive the icy waters of Ushuaia!). The writing is engaging and erudite. For those that love nature no other guide gives you as much as this guide.
HOWEVER, "Time Out Patagonia" should not be considered as your primary travel guide. It is more of a companion guide. It offers only a handful of restaurant and hotel recommendations, and often these recommendations are the most expensive. The small maps in this book are pathetic, and will help you locate nothing of significance.
"Time Out Patagonia" fills in the gaps that the other guides have. This is the guide you will read after the other guides have helped you with your accommodations and eateries (consider: Footprint Argentina 2006 - highly recommended - see my review). Strongly Recommended.
A must for Patagonia.......2007-01-16
Excellent guide for someone taking a trip to Patagonia. Precise in the level of information provided. It was used extensively during the 8 thousand mile trip by car. It helped in taking many decisions on sights and where to drive to and what to see.
Don't miss this one.......2003-12-21
This book has an amazing amount of information on Patagonia in general, and specifically Valdes Peninsula where I will be visiting. I was going to spend a lot of money with tour packages, uncertain accommodations, and a guy waiting at the airport holding up my name on a poster board...but now I can arrange it myself with this book and a taxi.

Packed with information and pictures........2006-08-13
My children (age 5 & 7) are enjoying this book, though it would be a fun book for older kids as well. (I, too, am learning some things as we read it together for Home school). Each page can take us 15 minutes to get through due to all of the colorful pictures and TONS of fun facts about life long ago. Every few pages there is a simple art project the kids can do related to the page. They have enjoyed those too. I expected the book to be larger than it was when it arrived, but now that we have been reading it I see it is well worth the money.

Book Description
The availability of online information sources allows today's scientists to perform powerful, well-targeted searches, yet often the full potential of such searches is not realised. A sound understanding of how information is stored and how effective search strategies are developed is crucial if one is to fully utilise this potential. This book examines the content of some of the most important scientific databases and explains the indexing policies used by the database producers. The mechanics of online searching are discussed, and the author details and logically explains the key principles involved in keyword, chemical substances and numeric searches. This knowledge is combined to show how effective search strategies are constructed and used.
