It also details the habitat relationships of all New England terrestrial and aquatic species, presented in sections on amphibians and reptiles, birds, and mammals. Each species account includes an illustration and range map, along with information on distribution in the region, status, habitat, special habitat requirements, details of breeding biology, home range and movements, and food habits, each fully documented from the pertinent literature. The introduction includes a brief land-use history of the region, descriptions of forest types and nonforest habitats, and wildlife responses to landscape change.

A necessity for all land managers and naturalists as well as birders, walkers, nature lovers, residents, and visitors to New England, the book includes the most recent information on natural history and distribution, and matrices relating all species to standard classifications of forest cover - types and nonforest habitats.

This book starts where field guides leave off. If you're interested in learning about an animal's habitat, behavior, and distribution in the New Enland region, then this book is indispensible. A great study tool for the wildlife enthusiast who wants to go beyond the condensed text of picture field guides. Note: this book assumes that you are familiar with the animals' physical appearance, so if you're not, you'll need a good regional field guide as companion book.

      Book Description

Charles Dickens and London are inextricably linked. The world-famous English writer lived in London for much of his life and is buried in Westminster Abbey. And it was London and its inhabitants that provided Dickens with the inspiration for so many of his works. Walking Dickensian London allows you to visit the locations mentioned in his works and to see the development of Victorian London. Additional routes offer an escape to Cobham or Rochester for a longer country stroll and to discover more about the places where Dickens spent his happy early childhood and retired in his final years.

Each walk takes you through an area used as the setting for one or more of Dickens's novels, from the peaceful, cobble-stoned, and lamp-lit Inns of Court featured in Great Expectations to the slums of Holborn portrayed in Oliver Twist. Along the way, you will see the homes of the Victorian great and good, as well as those of the lowlier characters, who made an impression on Dickens in both his personal and professional life. There is also an opportunity to sample authentic fare at the public houses that Dickens frequented.

Together with 19th-century engravings and pertinent excerpts from Dickens's works, Richard Jones takes you back in time to the once crowded Docklands, where the river thronged with clippers trading goods from around the world, and the elite of Holland Park with their garden parties and literary dinners.

Illustrated with atmospheric color photographs, which capture the pockets of Dickensian London still evident today, Walking Dickensian London is the perfect companion to discovering the London that Dickens knew so well.

I'm a London junkie and also a Dickens fan of long standing, and this is a perfect armchair-traveling book for someone like me. The author has been leading walking tours for years, and has written a number of other books about the city's history and haunts, and he's very knowledgeable about the subject. Dickens, of course, though born in Portsmouth, lived in London for most of his life and is interred in Westminster Abbey. Most of his writing, journalistic and fictional, is set in the city or nearby, and these twenty-five tours, each of them covering a couple of hours of not-difficult walking, will take you through both Dickens's own life and those of his memorable characters. The site of Marshalsea Prison (where Little Dorrit was born) is here, and Somerset House (where John Dickens worked in the Navy Pay Office), Borough Market (in whose doorway a drunken Bob Sawyer slept, thinking he was home without his key), the Cooking Depot (on whose simple meal of meat and potatoes Dickens gave rave reviews), the old Bow Street Police Court (where the Artful Dodger was forced to appear), and the grotesque door-knockers on Craven Street that gave Dickens the idea for Marley's ghostly face at Scrooge's own front door. Nor does Jones ignore other literary associations, whether the birthplace of Sherlock Holmes, the Browning residence on Wimpole Street, the location of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, or the Punch Tavern, where the magazine was conceived. The maps are detailed and most of the tours begin and end at Underground stops, so this volume will also be useful to the traveler on the spot.

I am an American who loves the UK and its history. Next time I go and visit London (regardless of bombings), I plan to take this book with me. For those of you who have read of famous and infamous areas in Regency and Victorian London and wondered exactly how to find them now, this is the book for you. I have read my share of Dickens years ago so I also find all the many Dickensian facts and anecdotes interesting but it is my interest in London of old that makes me endorse this book so heartily. The MANY walking maps are very clear and easy to follow. He also gives the distance and time plus mentions what famous old eateries are on the walk and what days they are closed. The walks generally start at one train station and end at another.

                            5 out of 5 stars A revised classic -- clear and fascinating.......2003-12-12

Each Tuesday I eagerly turn to the NY Times Science section, hoping to find a new article on brain science. The Times articles on this wide and important subject are among the most clearly written and captivating in all of science today. They seem to follow Einstein's dicta that you should be able to explain any concept -- including relativity -- in terms that a ten-year old child can not only understand, but be interested in. These articles will provide a solid foundation for anyone interested in this wonderful and positive field, especially when combined with a decent text on neuroanatomy to provide a map of what's going on. If more people wrote technical science as clearly and as cheerily as Ms Blakeslee, Ms Brody, or Mr Goleman, I doubt we would be worried about scientific literacy in this country. This book is a wonderful gift for kids from one to ninety-three, and I'd recommend it highly.

The Science team at the NEW YORK TIMES are working hard to keep up with the expanding knowledge of our most vital organ - our brains. This is a collection of their articles from the Decade of the Brain, ending in 2000. The vibrancy of the decade is captured for all who read these stories. For many years, the 1990's will be studied as a time of unparalleled cooperation between scientists, society, and the media. Leading the areas studied will be brain research. The Science staff of the NEW YORK TIMES has been complimented repeatedly in private and public statements by many neuroscientists. Society will continue to look to them for insight on the next generation of investigations.

Readers of the Science Times section on Tuesdays in the New York Times are familiar with the high-quality features to be found there. Now the best science and nature articles have been collected in a series of books on Fish, Birds, Fossils and Evolution, and The Brain.

The Science Times brain book contains 45 articles on topics ranging from the nature of dreams and consciousness to the making of memories. For all its seeming structural simplicity, the brain is a mysterious and complicated organ, and a great deal of brain structure and function are covered in this book. Sensory systems and imagination get fascinating article treatment, as do addiction and homosexuality. Sidebars and illustrations maintain the journalistic tone. --Therese Littleton

                                  Book Description

The book gives an overview of properties and research methods of new persistent organic chlorine and bromine compounds which have been observed as potential environmental hazards especially as bioaccumulated xenobiotics, but intensively studied only recently. Sources from product uses, industrial processes, wastes, emissions or metabolic transformations are reviewed. Physical and chemical properties and degradation rates useful for environmental fate predictions are given. Observations of levels and trends in environmental compartments are presented. Analytical methodologies and biological effects are described in detail. Compounds reviewed include planar PCBs, PCB metabolites, alkylaromatic chlorohydrocarbons (from pulp chlorobleaching and substitutes of PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls, polychlorinated and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polychlorinated terphenyls, naphthalenes, dibenzothiophenes and paraffins, toxaphene and tris(4-chlorophenyl)methane derivatives.

                                    Book Description

Random perturbations of Hamiltonian systems in Euclidean spaces lead to stochastic processes on graphs, and these graphs are defined by the Hamiltonian. In the case of white-noise type perturbations, the limiting process will be a diffusion process on the graph. Its characteristics are expressed through the Hamiltonian and the characteristics of the noise. Freidlin and Wentzell calculate the process on the graph under certain conditions and develop a technique which allows consideration of a number of asymptotic problems. The Dirichlet problem for corresponding elliptic equations with a small parameter are connected with boundary problems on the graph.

                                      Book Description

This book covers the impact of noise on models that are widely used in science and engineering applications. It applies perturbed methods, which assume noise changes on a faster time or space scale than the system being studied. The book is written in two parts. The first part presents a careful development of mathematical methods needed to study random perturbations of dynamical systems. The second part presents non-random problems in a variety of important applications. Such problems are reformulated to account for both external and system random noise.

                                        Book Description

This volume is concerned with various kinds of limit theorems for stochastic processes defined as a result of random perturbations of dynamical systems; especially with the long-time behavior of the perturbed system. In particular, exit problems, metastable states, optimal stabilization, and asymptotics of stationary distributions are also carefully considered. The authors' main tools are the large deviation theory, the central limit theorem for stochastic processes, and the averaging principle--all presented in great detail. The results allow for explicit calculations of the asymptotics of many interesting characteristics of the perturbed system. Most of the results are closely connected with PDE's and the author's approach presents a powerful method for studying the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of initial-boundary value problems for corresponding PDE's. The most essential additions and changes in this new edition concern the averaging principle. A new chapter on random perturbations of Hamiltonian systems has been added along with new results on fast oscillating perturbations of systems with conservation laws. New sections on wave front propagation in semilinear PDE's and on random perturbations of certain infinite-dimensional dynamical systems have been incorporated into the chapter on Sharpenings and Generalizations.

Physical motions are usually affected by random perturbations. The book shows how to quantify the parameters stable under perturbations, by studying dynamical systems subject to random noise. Such a study is important for better understanding of global stability of the dynamical systems, and their connection with physical phenomena such as turbulence. The book presents the first systematic treatment of the influence of small random perturbations on systems with complicated dynamics, usually with some type of hyperbolicity conditions. Its subject is on the border between the dynamical systems and stochastic processes. Many results presented in the book are relevant to partial differential equations with small parameters.

5 out of 5 stars Magical and funny play in a fine edition.......2004-11-22

There are many reasons for the popularity of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", not the least among them is the almost unique joining of the humorous misuse of language (by the tradesman actors) and the utter beauty of language and expression (by Puck, Oberon, and Titania). One usually gets a farce of language or an attempt at the sublime. Here the music of the two enriches both.

How can one put together these four disparate plotlines into such a wonderful whole? The quartet of lovers and their mixed and varied attentions forms the basis of the plot in the comedy and it is a delightful enough farce. The squabble of Demitrius and Lysander over Hermia while Helena pines over Demitrius, Oberon and Titania's argument over one of her servants and Oberon's use of Puck to manipulate Titania's affections including Puck's mistaken application of Oberon's potion to Lysander's eyes, the pending marriage of Thesus and Hippolyta, and the wonderfully, magically awful play being put on by the tradesman for the nobles. Putting all this into a wonderful whole is an achievement that I believe is unmatched.

I do want to say that this play has suffered a great deal in our sex obsessed age. We have foisted on this play an eroticism that it does not claim for itself nor display. While the "adult" couples (Thesus & Hippolyta, Oberon & Titania) interact and talk in ways that include that aspect of their lives, the youthful couples always talk and act in ways that are concerned with propriety and modesty. Bottom is hardly the lust blinded brute depicted in modern productions. He is much more interested in eating and chatting with his Fairy friends than Titania. It is Titania who is under the influence of the magic flower who is infatuated with Bottom while he remains quite oblivious to her desires.

In any case, this is a fine edition of the work with many helps for the reader. Almost half the book is filled with introductory essays that provide background on the play and its text. The play itself is full of notes to help the reader understand idioms and definitions of words that are obscure, unique to Shakespeare, or that have changed meaning since 1596. There are four Appendices that cover source materials for the play, realigned text that the editors believe were corrupted in the sources we have for the play and the last one is the prologue to the play that Peter Quince butchers to the amusement of the nobles. The appendix provides us with the prologue with correct punctuation, as Quince should have read it.

All the background material is interesting and enriches our understanding of the play. But it is the play that matters and is so much fun to read.
