Book Description

Beyond identifying plant species, North Woods examines the many influences that shape the ecology of northern forests and alpine areas.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-23

This book is a concise introduction to the ecology of environments in Northern New England, especially those of the Appalachian peaks. Marchand, a professor at Johnson State College in Vermont, wrote the book partly in response to discussions about the mountains he had with visitors to Green Mountain hiking huts. Topics covered include reading the landscape, plant communities, adaption at high elevations, and the future of the north woods. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings and includes an index.

Although the book is not a field guide to local species, it does include some information that can be quite useful. Rather than provide specific keys to determining the species of trees based on minutiae, Marchand instructs readers how to identify firs, spruces, pines, and hemlocks along the roadside, while driving 55 mph. That is, he encourages readers to look at the big picture first, and only then begin observing details, an approach that many beginners may find less daunting than studying complex keys, but just as effective.

                    Book Description

Advanced numerical simulations that use adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) methods have now become routine in engineering and science. Originally developed for computational fluid dynamics applications these methods have propagated to fields as diverse as astrophysics, climate modeling, combustion, biophysics and many others. The underlying physical models and equations used in these disciplines are rather different, yet algorithmic and implementation issues facing practitioners are often remarkably similar. Unfortunately, there has been little effort to review the advances and outstanding issues of adaptive mesh refinement methods across such a variety of fields. This book attempts to bridge this gap. The book presents a collection of papers by experts in the field of AMR who analyze past advances in the field and evaluate the current state of adaptive mesh refinement methods in scientific computing.

                      Book Description

One of the great masterpieces of Russian literature, the Red Cavalry cycle retains today the shocking freshness that made Babel's reputation when the stories were first published in the 1920s. Using his own experiences as a journalist and propagandist with the Red Army during the war against Poland, Babel brings to life an astonishing cast of characters from the exuberant, violent era of early Soviet history: commissars and colonels, Cossacks and peasants, and among them the bespectacled, Jewish writer/intellectual, observing it all and trying to establish his role in the new Russia.

Drawn from the acclaimed, award-winning Complete Works of Isaac Babel, this volume includes all of the Red Cavalry cycle; Babel's 1920 diary, from which the material for the fiction was drawn; and his preliminary sketches for the stories—the whole constituting a fascinating picture of a great writer turning life into art.

                      Book Description

Almost ten years in the writing, "RED BIRD DOWN" is a deeply moving Psychological/Emotional study of a young man's coming of age in Vietnam as an Aero-Scout helicopter pilot. These young pilots took the highest casualities of all the the helicopter pilots in Vietnam. Further, Army Warrant Officer Pilots took the highest casuality rates of all ranks in Vietnam. Yet, to the bitter end, even in LS 719 in support of Vietnames only, they lived by their credo -- "Leave no one behind."

The "hero" of "Red Bird Down" is typical of so many of these teenages and men in the early twenties. He struggles with the tumult of an unpopular war, his mission, the deaths of friends, and his growing love and respect for the young men with whom he serves. Eventually, he discovers a bond, formed in the fire and cold steel of combat. It ia a bond which cannot be broken.

This is not simply an action adventure book! The world has enough "Rambo" type works. While Kev, the hero, has plenty of action, adventure and misadventures, the reader will also laugh, cry, and learn to love the kids of Vietnam for who they were and all they accomplished.

Using incidents from my own time in Vietnam, I have woven them into a Novelized form. Through a running dialogue with a "fictional" home-town minister and a fictional relationship to my own alter-ego, I have looked at many of the political, theological, and emotional issues of Vietnam and the tumult of the late 60's.

My "hero" is a very human boy/man who occasionally soars to great heights and then quickly balances this soaring with "bone-head" mistakes. Through it all he "grows up," takes responsibility for himself, and learns to deal with life and death well beyond his years.

For those who want a serious read about the young men of the "Great Helicopter War," this is the book. In 490 pages, the reader will feel the emotional depth of one young man, who was so typical of so many. Be prepared to occasionally put the book down to ponder the depth of these young men and the heights to which they soared. In the end, you will understand their dedication, commitment to each other, and why they said, "Leave no one behind."

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helicopter tale from Vietnam War! .......2006-06-06

Author Bruce Carlson has written a real action packed novel about the air cavalry and aero-scouts in Vietnam. It will take you across the skies and the mountains and the rivers of Nam as you are transported back to the Vietnam helicopter wars of late 60's. It brings you all those colorful aviation characters that feel and sound like real people. In fact, the entire book's story line is based loosely on Bruce's old outfit and his own tour of duty. So it has that realistic sense of place and time that only a pilot could have written.

In the story, you see this idealistic young officer who has visions of changing the world and helping the South Vietnamese people get a democratic government arrive in-country. In short order, his real education begins to reshape his outlook on the war and the country he is sent to help. In time, he becomes a hardened veteran whose goal is get everyone back safely and alive if possible.

The reader will find that this story is well told and full of action. Bruce who is now an ordained minister has crafted a masterpiece of literature for military genre books. Well worth picking up and reading.

                      5 out of 5 stars Aero-Scout Bravery Beyond Description.......2002-03-18

With two tours with the 1st Cav Div (Airmobile) in Vietnam, I had ample opportunity to see this small craft in action. When they hovered close enough in hostile territory to find foot prints, I was glad that I piloted a large Chinook and did not have such missions.

This is a true-to-life depiction of how light observation helicopter pilots sought out the enemy so that other units could engage them. To do this took unheard of courage and Red Bird Down does them a grand tribute and truth. This book is a must read for anyone to understand airmobile operations.

5 out of 5 stars Aeroscouts in Vietnam.......2002-03-14

This book is an excellent and accurate portrayal of air cavalry operations in Vietnam. The men who flew the outrageously dangerous air cav aeroscout mission, men like author Bruce Carlson - Kev in the book - did things face to face with the enemy few have ever experienced and, unfortunately, few will ever really understand. The story not only describes the situations they encountered - hovering around in the trees deep in enemy controlled territory, looking for signs of the Viet Cong and NVA, intentionally drawing fire in order to initiate a contact, risking their lives to save others - but also explains the psychologocal impact the mission had upon, and the emotional toll the mission exacted of, the young men who flew the little birds in combat. Anyone who has seen or expects to see, "We Were Soldiers" should read this book. For one important fact omitted in the movie is how General Kinnard, commander of the First Cav, knew where to insert Mel Gibson's (LTC Hal Moore's) battalion. It was as a result of two weeks of recon operations flown by the 1/9th Air Cav Squadron - conducting the same kind of close-in recon described by Bruce Carlson in "Red Bird Down." In real life it was the 1/9th Air Cav and its aeroscouts, such as Kev and his crew, who found and engaged the NVA unit near the base of Chu Pong Mountain and kicked off what became the battle of the Ia Drang Valley. Read about how the air cav really worked in "Red Bird Down." As a former air cav gunship pilot, I highly recommend "Red Bird Down."

5 out of 5 stars From Safety of Home to War - Stolen Youth.......2002-03-13

I read the book and liked it so well that I bought 2 more copies and gave them as gifts. Powerful reading. In depth look at war from the youth of the sixties. Our youth was stolen. I am always looking for different perspectives about the Vietnam conflict. Thanks Bruce for the powerful book.

                        Book Description

From the early Soviet period, the impassioned short fiction of the great Russian-Jewish writer

One of the most powerful short-story writers of the twentieth century, Isaac Babel expressed his sense of inner conflict through disturbing tales that explored the contradictions of Russian society. Whether reflecting on anti-Semitism in stories such as “Story of My Dovecote” and “First Love,” or depicting Jewish gangsters in his native Odessa, Babel's eye for the comical laid bare the ironies of history. His masterpiece, “Red Cavalry,” set in the Soviet-Polish war, is one of the classics of modern fiction. By turns flamboyant and restrained, this collection of Babel's best-known stories vividly expresses the horrors of his age.

“Marvelously subtle, tragic, and often comic.” —James Wood, The New Republic

The information in this book is not correct, the roster of the unit is not complete. I did not realize it was written by Edward Daily who has been proven not to have been in the unit or a prisoner of war and did not recive any of the metals that he stated.
