beautiful, but few pages and paperback.......2003-12-19

I bought this book after seeing one with the same title and photographer in a bookstore while traveling. I thought it was the same book, but this one is paperback and only 80 pages (1/4" thick). The pictures are beautiful, but if you're looking for a coffee table book, this isn't a good choice--it's too thin and flimsy. You'll need to be careful to make sure you don't damage the pictures while viewing them (e.g., by creasing them if you open the book too wide).

A pretty book about Utah.......2002-08-14

Utah deserves its PR-created title as "The Best of the West". When it comes to bright, even garish, multi-colored rock formations, canyons, mesas, arches, pillars, cliffs, and grottoes, Utah has no equal. What would be a national park or monument in any other state is a feature whose name isn't even known to most locals here. From Zion to Dinosaur, and all points south and east, Utah is a scenic wonderland par excellence.

This is the second of two books, bearing the same title, by photographer David Muench. Here, the companion writer is Ann Zwinger, the renowned Western naturalist. Zwinger's writing, of course, is peerless. In a brilliant essay, she captures the nature of this beautiful, but difficult, land and those who have settled it. I commend it highly.

Muench's photography is another matter. The subject matter is excellently chosen. In this book, as opposed to its predecessor, Muench has left behind the obvious tourist magnets such as Zion and Bryce Canyon, to focus on such little known, but equally striking areas of beauty and wilderness, such as the San Rafael Swell, an area that could easily be a national park. This is commendable.

However, as with most of Muench's work, undue emphasis is placed on use of the wide-angle and, particularly, the telephoto lens. The result is pretty pictures, but ones that are deceptive to the traveler/reader. No one is ever going to see, except through a telephoto lens, the things Muench shows in this book. You may detect that I don't care for this form of presentation, and you are right. I would much rather see photographs by Ray Manley or Fred Hirschmann, who obtain items of surpassing beauty without visual distortion being necessary.

So, while the book is a nice loaner from a library perhaps, I was disappointed after having bought it.

A Palpable Love of Utah.......2002-03-14

I went to school with David Muench's sister. When she bragged a bit about him (and rightfully so), I began to follow his work. When I lived in Arizona in the early 60s, I saw his photographs everywhere. His images have become so much a part of my consiousness that I often wonder how many of the descriptions in my book were inspired by "the real thing" and how many reflect Muench's vision.

Muench's work is everywhere. It's in Arizona Highways, calendars, and in the libraries of many who love the Intermountain West.

This book is pure pleasure. Anyone who loves Utah will want to turn its pages and keep a copy with their other coffee table treasures.

"Portrait of America" .......2006-06-09

"Portrait of America" was a popular video documentary series in the mid-eighties, a product of collaboration between Superstation/Turner Broadcasting Corporation and Ambrose Home Video. Well-researched, each video is divided into 5 segments covering most unique historical, social, and cultural aspects of each state. Watching such an interesting documentary, each being roughly about 50 minutes long, without advertisements and other interruptions seems to be a privilege in these days!

Black and white photography is artistic, but doesn't do this area of the country justice.

Also, I appreciate the author's concern for preserving the land, but government protection could quite possibly be the WORST way to do it because it brings in bus loads of the very people who will damage it. Just admire it from a book or ignore it.

From the author: The effects of different functionalized polypropylene (PP) and diethyl maleate (DEM) combined with styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene copolymer (SEBS) on various properties of extruded-stretched films of polypropylene/ethylene vinyl alcohol (PP/EVOH) blends were studied. The stretched films of the original PP/EVOH blends and those of the polymer-g-DEM modified blends showed lamellar-type morphology, whereas their maleic anhydride (MAH) functionalized counterparts showed fibrillar morphology. Such peculiar morphology resulted in a dramatic decrease of oxygen permeability as compared with the unmodified or MAH modified PP/EVOH blends. It has been known for some time that many of the familiar integrable systems of equations are symmetry reductions of self-duality equations on a metric or on a Yang-Mills connection (for example, the Korteweg-de Vries and nonlinear Schr"odinger equations are reductions of the self-dual Yang-Mills equation). This book explores in detail the connections between self-duality and integrability, and also the application of twistor techniques to integrable systems. It has two central themes: first, that the symmetries of self-duality equations provide a natural classification scheme for integrable systems; and second that twistor theory provides a uniform geometric framework for the study of B"acklund tranformations, the inverse scattering method, and other such general constructions of integrability theory, and that it elucidates the connections between them.

Bedford's handbook is quite handy for a non-expert. Anyone who's going to be teaching Shakespeare but hasn't written a dissertation on him ought to pick one up.

A Must Read for Any and All Interested in Shakespeare.......2003-12-19

This book is a great overview of all things Shakespeare. It intorduces the man himself, the language of the works, the culture of the Elizabethans and the theatre, sosurces, and basic scholarly criticism and ideas. A wonderful foundational text with primary documents which greatly enhance the reading and give the subject a new life.

Excellent and Informative.......2003-09-04

Russ McDonald is not someone many people have heard of, unless you happen to live in the world of Shakespeare scholars, in which case, I would be surprised if you have not. Mr. McDonald was for a long time associated with the Folger Library, and has edited numerous volumes of the Penguin Shakespeare editions, among other credentials. I have had the good fortune to be in one of his classes, and I can think of no one else I have ever met that has so much love and appreciation for Shakespeare's genius, while simultaneously being able to pass that to his students. I honestly don't think there is anything this man *doesn't* know about Shakespeare.

That being said, The Bedford Companion is less about The Bard, and more so about the times in which he lived. While attention is given to his plays, equal attention is given to such things as the history of the Globe Theater, Shakespeare's early life, the economic situations of the time, and a history of Shakespeare appreciation, or "Bardolatry". It shows Shakespeare as a human, as a buisinessman, a family man, and how he eventually become know as the greatest writer in the English language. (Most of his plays weren't published until after his death.) This book may not help you fully understand Hamlet, but it can certainly make it more interesting.

Good Refresher To Shakespeare.......2001-08-30

Its been almost 13 years since I had the pleasure of enjoying Russ McDonald's insight on Shakespeare first hand and it was a pleasure re-engaging with his wit and insight again via this text.

Excellent documentary source.......2000-11-23

Russ McDonald's book provides excellent materials that help students to see the time in which Shakespeare lived. I use it everytime I teach Shakespeare. Note, I'm 13 and under, but Amazon's review system is funky (see!).

I recommend this book for those who enjoy reading British literature from the 16th and 17th centuries not just Shakespeare.
