Book Description

This study is the first global assessment of coral reefs to map areas at risk from overfishing, coastal development, and other human activity. The study finds that nearly 60 percent of the earth's coral reefs are threatened by human activity -- ranging from coastal development and overfishing to inland and marine pollution -- leaving much of the world's marine biodiversity at risk. The report concludes that, while reefs provide billions of people and hundreds of countries with food, tourism revenue, coastal production, and new medications for increasingly drug-resistant diseases -- worth about $375 billion each year -- they are among the least monitored and protected natural habitats in the world. Produced by the World Resources Institute in collaboration with International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM), the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Buy!!.......2003-09-01

This book is a completely worthwhile buy! It gives ofcourse statistical information, mainly in a map form about the threats and about the risk which the world's reefs face. It doesn't catalog the amount or rate of degradation, since this is not fully known. However the book gives information on the types of reefs, real case studies of reefs and of problems faced by reefs.
The book is an easy read and the information presented in both map and picture form is very inviting.
I reccommend this book for students studying reefs/ conservation, or anyone just interested in reefs. A good addition to this book as well is Coral Reefs, ecology, threats and conservation by Charles Sheppard.

For two decades Outside magazine has remained committed to good writing, publishing feature articles from well-known authors on a variety of topics connected (in sometimes obscure yet fascinating ways) to the outdoors, adventure, travel, and just about anything else that happens beyond the confines of the mall. The most memorableof these pieces are collected in a single anthology, The Best of Outside: Tom McGuane offers compelling reasons to hunt; Jonathan Raban discusses life on the open ocean; Barry Lopez considers the graceful and beleaguered flocks of snow geese that once filled the skies. Also included are the original articles from Jon Krakauer and Sebastian Junger that would expand into their bestselling books Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm, respectively.

        Book Description

The man-eating proclivities of Komodo dragons.  The complicated art of being a cowgirl. A picaresque ramble with a merry band of tree-cleaners.  The big-wave crusaders of the world's best surfers.  For the past twenty years, Outside magazine has set the standard for original and engaging reports on travel, adventure, sports, and the environment.

Along the way, many of America's  best journalists and storytellers--including such writers as Jon Krakauer, Tim Cahill, E. Annie Proulx, Edward Abbey, Thomas McGuane, David Quammen, and Jane Smiley--have made the magazine a venue for some of their most compelling work.   The Best of Outside represents the finest the award-winning magazine has to offer: thirty stories that range from high action to high comedy.  Whether it's Jonathan Raban sailing the open sea, Susan Orlean celebrating Spain's first female bullfighter, or Jim Harrison taking the wheel on a cross-country road trip, each piece can be characterized in a word: unforgettable.  Commemorating Outside magazine's twentieth anniversary, The Best of Outside is one of the most entertaining and provocative anthologies of the decade.

4 out of 5 stars Complex, interesting reading; if you can see it........2005-06-15

I concur with all of the previous glowing reviews. I have a beef with the publisher; the text is too small. I guess the font to be an 8.

5 out of 5 stars Out and About.......2002-02-04

Thanks to Outside magazine, which has been systematically cultivating a stable of fine writers for years now, we have a collection of what I'll call the "nouveau adventure" genre. Yes, there are traditional, edge-of-your-seat adventure stories by familiar names like Jon Krakauer, Sebastian Junger and Dave Roberts, but to me the real pleasure of reading this book is derived from pieces like Ian Frazier's "Keeping America's Trees Safe from Small-Curd Bubble Wrap," and Randy Wayne White's "Why Do We Fish?" Their topics are just a bit off the wall, poke gentle fun at the human condition, and still manage to offer some real insight into subjects that most of us would never have thought of.

I have also savored the several pieces in the anthology that touch a deeper chord. "The High Cost of Being David Bower," a sensitive portrait of a man literally driven by the urgency of his dream, and "The Blackfoot Years," dealing with the importance of a river to the lives of a family that has had to cope with tragedy, are two favorites.

Here you will find adventure of all kinds, insightful social commentary, high risk moments, and just enough oddball humor to keep you entertained for hours. Like other readers, I find myself returning to this collection just for the fun and pleasure of rereading my favorites. Many thanks to Outside for having the vision and sense to give these authors a home in print.

5 out of 5 stars A great read and re-read.......2001-07-25

I must have re-read this book for the twentieth time by now. And I already have this whole stack of Outside magazines on the shelf! Every time I read this book I would discover something interesting and new between the lines and in the stories -- whether it's emotional, descriptive or implied. I feel terrified when I read Krakauer's take on the Everest accident; inspired by the story on David Brower and his environmental stand; and I laughed myself silly with The King of the Ferret Leggers. In short, this book take me through the whole gamut of emotions. It's a great compilation and an even greater buy.

5 out of 5 stars Ferret-legging, you must read this.......2000-05-29

Years and years ago an office-mate brought in a copy Outside magazine with an article on "Ferret-legging," and read to all of us. By the end of it we were dying with laughter. I made a xerox, which I saved for years, until I finally made the mistake of loaning to a friend (ex, now, obviously) WHO DID NOT RETURN IT.
Now this compendium of Outside's comes out, and blessed Mary mother of God, it includes the ferret-legging piece.
You must buy this, flip to "King of the ferret-leggers," and read the piece. You'll thank me, honest you will.
And I'm told there're some other stories in here as well. Think of them as gravy.

5 out of 5 stars Superb writing about superb adventures.......1999-08-06

This book posits that a well-written account of an adventure can be just as much fun as the actual, original experience, and the book's contributors, all with sterling credentials (published books, New Yorker work, etc.), do not disappoint. The writing quality is such that I found myself avidly reading through stories about pastimes I don't enjoy and hardly consider -- hunting, flyfishing, etc. -- and enjoying them nonetheless, drawn in by the enticing quality of the writing. Some of the pure adventure works may not be great literature, but, then, not everything enjoyable in life is.

              Book Description

Everywhere in Mississippi is the wonderful, whimsical story of a man in search of his lost dog, Skippy. His journey across the state takes him through over 300 Mississippi cities, towns, and communities, all ingeniously integrated into this twisting, turning tale. In lyrical, rhyming verse, and delightful alliterations, author/illustrator Laurie Parker, a Mississippi native, has woven an enchanting yarn—vividly illustrated—that will engage and amuse Mississippians of all ages.

Asked if he has looked in PELAHATCHIE
For a dog that was really scratchy,

              The man replies,

              "Yes, I've looked there, thanks.

I've looked in ROSEDALE, and RED BANKS, CORINTH, COMO, COTTON PLANT, DARLING, DERMA, and DURANT, WAVELAND, WESSON, WEBB, WINONA, VICKSBURG, VARDAMAN, VERONA—Even up in OKOLONA!!

I've searched these towns in Mississippi,
And still I haven't found my Skippy!"

                                Book Description

This book chronicles the discovery and analysis of animal fossils found in one of the most important paleontological sites in the world--Porcupine Cave, located at an elevation of 9,500 feet in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. With tens of thousands of identified specimens, this site has become the key source of information on the fauna of North America's higher elevations between approximately 1 million and 600,000 years ago, a period that saw the advance and retreat of glaciers numerous times. Until now, little has been understood about how this dramatic climate change affected life during the middle Pleistocene. In addition to presenting state-of-the-art data from Porcupine Cave, this study also presents groundbreaking analysis on what the data from the site show about the evolutionary and ecological adjustments that occurred in this period, shedding light on how one of the world's most pressing environmental concerns--global climate change--can influence life on earth.

                                    Book Description

Interfacial phenomena driven by heat or mass transfer are widespread in science and various branches of engineering. Research in this area has become quite active in recent years, attributable in part, at least, to the entry of physicists and their sophisticated experimental techniques into the field. Until now, however, the field has lacked a readable account of the recent developments. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection remedies this problem by furnishing a self-contained monograph that examines a rich variety of phenomena in which interfaces pay a crucial role. From a unified perspective that embraces physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, and applied mathematics, the authors study recent developments related to the Marangoni effect, including patterned convection and instabilities, oscillatory/wavy phenomena, and turbulent phenomena. They examine Bénard layers subjected to transverse and longitudinal thermal gradients and phenomena involving surface tension gradients as the driving forces, including falling films, drops, and liquid bridges. It is only in the past two or three decades that researchers have performed suitable, clear-cut experiments involving interfacial phenomena, and the stage is now set for a virtual explosion of the field. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection will bring you quickly up to date on the advances realized and prepare you to both use the results and to make further advances.

                                        Book Description

Peter Handke's mother was an invisible woman. Throughout her life—which spanned the Nazi era, the war, and the postwar consumer economy—she struggled to maintain appearances, only to arrive at a terrible recognition: "I'm not human any more." Not long after, she killed herself with an overdose of sleeping pills.

In A Sorrow Beyond Dreams her son sits down to record what he knows, or thinks he knows, about his mother's life and death before, in his words, "the dull speechlessness—the extreme speechlessness" of grief takes hold forever. And yet the experience of speechlessness, as it marks both suffering and love, lies at the heart of Handke's brief but unforgettable elegy. This austere, scrupulous, and deeply moving book is one of the finest achievements of a great contemporary writer.

                                        Customer Reviews:

                                        3 out of 5 stars Very Sorrowful.......2006-07-28

Peter Handke's slim memoir is necessarily sorrowful; it is about his mother's suicide. She was a survivor of the holocaust, and like many survivors, suffered from severe depression in the subsequent years. Handke's tone is cold, removed, and sepulchral. This is a vivid and moving text; it can not be easily categorized. It is non-fiction, but it is composed with the eye of a true artist.

Not a read for everyone, but definitely an impressive effort. It is a testament to the ultimate destruction of Europe during WWII, glimpsed through the microcosm of a single individual.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Sensitively Valuable Elegy.......2003-01-21

With thanks to the New York Review Books, Peter Handke's A SORROW BEYOND DREAMS is once again available. This slim but pungent volume opens with an elegant introduction by Jeffrey Eugenides ( author of 'Middlesex' and 'The Virgin Suicides' ) and few writers could better place this memoir of Handke's response to his mother's suicide in 1971 in a more meaningful perspective.

Handke writes about his mother in a way that creates a story rather than a history of a life. There is so much understantding of how the world changed from Pre-WW II through the post war emptiness of a desecrated Europe and its accompanying slow move toward healing that plagues burned countries after victories or defeats signalling the end of wars. Handke's mother remains nameless which serves to make her a more universal figure than just another individual. And using the word 'individual' is actually in contrast to the major problem of this tragic women's life. Always a women of poverty, suffering the cruelties that that station in life suggests (a fatherless child, a marriage of convenience that results in a life with an alcoholic husban, self induced abortions, begging for food, the lack of simple luxuries like Christmas gifts, etc) his mother was not a woman who considered herself an individual: she was a daughter of a postwar poverty and gloom, aligning herself with Socialism which further negated her worth as a unique person. Her gradual withdrawal in yet another group (those with 'nervous breakdowns') overtured her ultimate complete withdrawal from the world as she finds taking her own life the final solution to her grief.

Handke reserves his own response to the loss of his mother until the end of this memoir - a section of memories, flashbacks, regrets and tears that force him to place his final godbyes in the form of the written word. The writing is powerful in its simplicity, unfettered by false emotions, straight forward in forcing both the author and the reader into confronting the tragedy of suicide. Perhaps many readers will use this short tome to find healing of like experiences: others will read this book simply because it is a beautifully constructed story of the life on an Everyman/woman. Highly Recommended.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Short,Brutal and Unforgettable.......2003-01-08

Glad to see this back in print. I've relied on a library copy when I wanted to revisit it. Spend the hour or two it takes to read this and it will stick with you forever. I hope they've touched up the few missteps in Mannheim's translation. Otherwise, this near-perfect memoir puts most of its flabby and narcissistic successors (the list is endless) to shame.

                                        5 out of 5 stars The finest auto/biographical work I know.......2003-01-03

At once stark and lyrical, Handke's A SORROW BEYOND DREAMS is one of the finest memoirs I've read, and, without a doubt, the strongest portrait I know of a mother by her son--a portrait made strong, in part, by Handke's ability to see and analyze his mother's life within the context of the limited choices available to her, and by his ability to see the ways in which her life is molded by the "genre" of a life comparable to a woman of his mother's class and station. It is, too, at once loving and mercilessly painful. I'm not a great fan of Handke's--the intensity of his self-consciousness, or the cool ironic stances of his early work--but this brief book is an exception. Read it & you will be reading it again throughout your life.

                                        3 out of 5 stars A Sorrow Beyond Dreams.......2002-10-19

In several dozen pages, Peter Handke gives an overview of his mother's life up to and including her suicide in late 1971.

In spare and unsentimental prose, the reader sees a woman (the last of five siblings) grow into a vibrant and vivacious creature in 1930s Germany. An affair with an older married man produces a child; long after he is gone from her life, she fosters the illusion that he was her one true love. (Never mind that their meeting years later is awkward and stilted at best.)

In a subsequent loveless marriage with an alcoholic and abusive man, Handke's mother is slowly destroyed by stifled dreams, societal expectations, and stony resignation.

Handke's insistence on remaining detached is the only problematical aspect of this otherwise elegant memoir. He makes a valiant attempt, but it just doesn't work for this type of book. The reader only comes close to empathizing with his mother; the full embrace is not there. Moreover, the authorial intrusions seem to be too much of a postmodern literary trick and interrupt the flow of the narrative. Every instance that Handke steers the book towards the aspect of the writing process itself is a misstep. (A memoirist who accomplishes this more skillfully is the French writer Annie Ernaux.)

"A Sorrow Beyond Dreams" is a worthwhile read and ultimately a fine tribute, yet the reader yearns for the more detailed version that the author promises with the very last sentence of his book.

My mother has been dead for almost seven weeks; I had better get to work before the need to write about her, which I felt so strongly at her funeral, dies away & I fall back into the dull speechlessness with which I reacted to the news of her suicide" In this way Peter Handke begins his extraordinary confrontation with his mother's suicide. It is a meeting that taxes his intelligence, his memory & his soul... from which emerged A Sorrow beyond Dreams.
