Book Description
A celebration of the life and pioneering work of the eminent mycologist and scholar R. Gordon Wasson.
A legendary figure in the field of ethnobotany, R. Gordon Wasson's trail-blazing work on hallucinogenic mushrooms with the Mexican curandera Maria Sabina in the 1950s brought increased scholarly attention to the importance of psychoactive plants in the spiritual life of indigenous peoples and had a profound influence well beyond the academic world. His accessible writings helped popularize these discoveries, forming the ground for the social revolution of the following decade. With the growing interest in the role of psychoactive plants in society today, the work of R. Gordon Wasson and the example set by the man himself, so well illustrated here, takes on increasing importance.Â
Customer Reviews:
This is a must have.......2007-04-09
I would like to say that it's a shame on my part that it took me so long after becoming familiar with this subject to now have purchased this book. It is stimulating and personal non-fiction about a man who deserves far more credit to his name than we now give him. Each chapter reads like a letter to the general public from someone who knew R. Gordon Wasson personally. If you have any interest in knowing how America became familar with the psilocybe mushrooms proceed and read the Life Magazine article from the 1950s. It's on the net. If you want an expanded version from various angles, including biographical information on Wasson, pick this book up.
A unique and compelling contribution.......2006-06-22
This is a one-of-a-kind tribute to R. Gordon Wasson, widely credited as the primary founder of ethnomycology, whose history-making investigations into fungi across culture led him to the trail of the sacred mushrooms of Mesoamerica. The contributions by various authors are excellent, and the production superb. It features high-quality reproductions of historic photographs of mushroom ceremonies of the Mazatec (some originally published in LIFE magazine), along with some breath-taking pictures never-before-seen. Interesting, informative highlights come one after the other, from a nice assortment of Wasson's highly accomplished colleagues. This is a distinguished work that cannot be praised too highly, and will grow in stature with time. It was fittingly published as #11 in Wasson's Ethnomycological Studies, and goes well on the shelf alongside the others in that series. Very well done, and highly recommended for those with serious interest in this fascinating and important subject.

Wonderful ideas and pictures. Beautiful book........1998-07-08
The pictures are wonderful and the directions on how to make the different projects are fairly good although they could be a bit more specific on the quantities and types of dried material required. All in all I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning how to make topiaries and pomanders or to get great gift ideas.

The only reference you'll ever need........2001-08-18
Our family and extended family traveled to France & Italy this summer. This book was the most comprehensive, quick guide for historic background, inside stories and accurate directions, as well as reviews. Every hotel or restaurant was exactly as reviewed. No surprises! When you are traveling with 15 people you don't need surprises, just information you can rely on. This book and the Fodor's Provence Gold guide were excellent examples of this!
OK, but not thorough.......2000-10-01
This is fine if you want to hit the main tourist sites and bigger towns. However, if you really want to explore Tuscany, we used the Food Lovers Guide to Tuscany, Charming Inns and Hotels of Tuscany and Michellin. Also, the Eyewitness guide provides better coverage of Florence.

Book Description
The first four chapters of this book give a comprehensive and unified theory of the Krylov methods. Many of these are shown to be particular examples of
the block conjugate-gradient algorithm and it is this observation that
permits the unification of the theory. The two major sub-classes of those
methods, the Lanczos and the Hestenes-Stiefel, are developed in parallel as
natural generalisations of the Orthodir (GCR) and Orthomin algorithms. These
are themselves based on Arnoldi's algorithm and a generalised Gram-Schmidt
algorithm and their properties, in particular their stability properties,
are determined by the two matrices that define the block conjugate-gradient
algorithm. These are the matrix of coefficients and the preconditioning
matrix.
In Chapter 5 the"transpose-free" algorithms based on the conjugate-gradient squared algorithm are presented while Chapter 6 examines the various ways in which the QMR technique has been exploited. Look-ahead methods and general block methods are dealt with in Chapters 7 and 8 while Chapter 9 is devoted to error analysis of two basic algorithms.
In Chapter 10 the results of numerical testing of the more important algorithms in their basic forms (i.e. without look-ahead or preconditioning) are presented and these are related to the structure of the algorithms and the general theory. Graphs illustrating the performances of various algorithm/problem combinations are given via a CD-ROM.
Chapter 11, by far the longest, gives a survey of preconditioning techniques. These range from the old idea of polynomial preconditioning via SOR and ILU preconditioning to methods like SpAI, AInv and the multigrid methods that were developed specifically for use with parallel computers. Chapter 12 is devoted to dual algorithms like Orthores and the reverse algorithms of Hegedus. Finally certain ancillary matters like reduction to Hessenberg form, Chebychev polynomials and the companion matrix are described in a series of appendices.
· comprehensive and unified approach
· up-to-date chapter on preconditioners
· complete theory of stability
· includes dual and reverse methods
· comparison of algorithms on CD-ROM
· objective assessment of algorithms

Book Description
In spite of the fact that an entire continent was named after him, Amerigo Vespucci remains one of the least researched characters in American history. In an attempt to find the man behind the character, this book casts light on the time of Vespucci and on the reasons why many traditional historians do not know much about him, and reveals a man far removed from the fanatical descriptions of his admirers and from the slander of his enemies.
Product Description
The Emergence of the idea of a new world The collective discoveries of Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, John and Sebastian Cabot, and Giovanni da Verrazzano constitute a distinct Italian Era of Discovery which laid the groundwork for all other voyages which followed. The Italian discoverers deserve a place alongside the well-known Humanists in the history of art, literature, philosophy, and government by virtue of their research and accomplishments. The explorers also made original contributions to the fields of science, navigation and cartography. The world view of the Italian explorers evolved to include the concept of a new world. They had to reevaluate their cosmography and change the maps to reflect their new knowledge. The concept of a New World was equally profound as that of a new age. The most important contribution of the Italian explorers was not what they found, but the change in thinking that took place when they tried to explain their discoveries. This book has been read by those with an interest in the Age of Discovery, Renaissance Humanism, and the history of the New World. It has been used in university classes a required reading in classes related to these topics.

Book Description
In Remarkable Shrimps, Raymond T. Bauer explores the evolution, natural history, biological diversity, and commercial importance of caridean shrimps--a fascinating and colorful group of aquatic organisms that inhabit freshwater and marine environments from the tropics to the poles.
The biological diversity of carideans encompasses a remarkable array of adaptations in body form and function, coloration, breeding biology, and mating behavior. Carideans' important grooming and antifouling adaptations are examined in detail, and Bauer discusses the structural basis of their coloration, the role of color change in concealment, and other forms of camouflage. Reproductive biology and sexual systems, including hermaphroditism and sex change, are reviewed, and Bauer provides evidence for sex pheromones in the attraction of males to females. Seasonal, latitudinal, and depth variation in life history patterns are also analyzed.
The symbiotic relationships of shrimps with invertebrates such as corals, sea anemones, and sea urchins and also with fishes are fascinating phenomena of marine ecosystems. Different views on the ancestry and evolutionary history of carideans are evaluated as a stimulus for further work. The status of caridean fisheries and aquaculture is appraised, and shrimp productivity is explained in terms of life history adaptations.
Profiling each of the nearly thirty families of caridean shrimps, Bauer writes in an informal style that is nevertheless rich with precise and useful references. Over one hundred figures and 11 plates with 70 color and half-tone photographs accompany the text.
Extensive fieldwork is showcased in life history studies on shrimps, employing both behavioral observations using time-lapse video and experimental work to test hypotheses on mating strategies.
Volume 7 in the Animal Natural History Series
Customer Reviews:
A solid base for anyone interested in shrimps.......2007-08-31
Ray Bauer's book is the first general review of the biology, diversity, and ecology of a very important group of crustaceans, the caridean shrimps. It has chapters on reproduction (including hermaphroditism and sex change), symbioses, as well as morphological and ecological definitions of all families. It is reasonably well illustrated, although I found colour plates very dull, especially compared to excellent UW photographs in more popular guides, such as Debelius' Crustacea Guide of the World. Altogether it is a solid base for anyone interested in biology of caridean shrimps.
Book Description
Quantum Chemistry of Solids delivers a comprehensive account of the main features and possibilities of LCAO methods for the first principles calculations of electronic structure of periodic systems. The first part describes the basic theory underlying the LCAO methods applied to periodic systems and the use of wave-function-based (Hartree-Fock), density-based (DFT) and hybrid hamiltonians. The translation and site symmetry consideration is included to establish connection between k-space solid-state physics and real-space quantum chemistry methods in the framework of cyclic model of an infinite crystal. The inclusion of electron correlation effects for periodic systems is considered on the basis of localized crystalline orbitals. The possibilities of LCAO methods for chemical bonding analysis in periodic systems are discussed. The second part deals with the applications of LCAO methods for calculations of bulk crystal properties, including magnetic ordering and crystal structure optimization. The discussion of the results of some supercell calculations of point defects in non-metallic solids and of the crystalline surfaces electronic structure illustrates the efficiency of LCAO method for solids.
Book Description
Acclaimed by Nature as "an ideal text," this extensive survey provides coverage of defects in nonmetals, emphasizing point defects and point-defect processes. It encompasses electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of defective solids and discusses extended defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries.
191 figures. 43 tables. 1985 edition.

Book Description
Basically all properties of semiconductor devices are influenced by the distribution of point defects in their active areas. This book contains the first comprehensive review of the properties of intrinsic point defects, acceptor and donor impurities, isovalent atoms, chalcogens, and halogens in silicon, as well as of their complexes. Special emphasis is placed on compiling the structures, energetic properties, identified electrical levels and spectroscopic signatures, and the diffusion behavior from experimental and theoretical investigations. In addition, the book discusses the fundamental concepts of silicon and its defects, the electron system, diffusion, thermodynamics, and reaction kinetics which form the scientific basis needed for a thorough understanding of the text. Therefore, the book is able to provide an introduction to newcomers in this field up to a comprehensive reference for experts in process technology, solid-state physics, and simulation of semiconductor processes.

Book Description
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to learning classifier systems (LCS) – or more generally, rule-based evolutionary online learning systems. LCSs learn interactively – much like a neural network – but with an increased adaptivity and flexibility. This book provides the necessary background knowledge on problem types, genetic algorithms, and reinforcement learning as well as a principled, modular analysis approach to understand, analyze, and design LCSs. The analysis is exemplarily carried through on the XCS classifier system – the currently most prominent system in LCS research. Several enhancements are introduced to XCS and evaluated. An application suite is provided including classification, reinforcement learning and data-mining problems. Reconsidering John Holland’s original vision, the book finally discusses the current potentials of LCSs for successful applications in cognitive science and related areas.

A book for class I would have read for leisure.......2001-05-26
I was assigned this book in an English Renaissance literature class. This collection provides a fascinating insight into the English Renaissance. There are selections by the normal poets: Shakespeare, Spenser, etc. There are also selections by female poets, including Elizabeth I. I learned so much from this book in terms of literature, culture, and life. If you are interested in this time period, or in the British Isles, this book is essential!
