Book Description

A chronicle of a solitary year spent on a Cape Cod beach, The Outermost House has long been recognized as a classic of American nature writing. Henry Beston had originally planned to spend just two weeks in his seaside home, but was so possessed by the mysterious beauty of his surroundings that he found he 'could not go.' Instead, he sat down to try and capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to: the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued that, 'The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.' Seventy-five years after they were first published, Beston's words are more true than ever.

Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my negative reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews.
Your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks.

On The Outermost House: Henry Beston's account of his year on Cape Code in the 1920s is a classic. It's worth reading just for the poetic lines. Here is an example:

"For a moment of night we have a glimpse of ourselves and of our world islanded in its stream of stars--pilgrims of mortality, voyaging between horizons across eternal seas of space and time."

Highly recommended!

I particularly enjoyed this book as it is set in an area that has a large simularity to where I grew up and I particularly liked the lonliness and bleakness that I identified with.

I wouldn't dream of heading for the Cape without this book--Henry Beston captures the Cape more beautifully than any other author. THE OUTERMOST HOUSE is one of those enchanting books which improves with each rereading.

Since Amazon hasn't provide a link between Outermost House, by Beston, and The Winter Beach, by Charlton Ogburn (ISBN 068809418X), I would like to suggest here that, if you like Outermost House, you will almost certainly enjoy The Winter Beach, as well. From the jacket description: "A naturalist and man of rare wisdom shares with you his journeys along the Atlantic shore."

There's an H.G. Wells story (in Bloom's anthology for children) called "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes"; the title character is struck by lightning and undergoes a visual hallucination in which he believes he sees a desolate island, or as he puts it, "Dark sea and sunrise! And yet I'm sitting on a sofa in old Boyce's room!...God help me!" I didn't think much of the story at the time I read it, but now, on reading "The Outermost House," I find it a remarkably excellent and relevant critique of American nature writing. Surrounded by friends and family, Davidson's gaze is turned inward-or rather projected far outward-to a pristine setting that becomes a horror to the reader.

I'm surprised I didn't like Beston's book better. The introduction makes comparisons to Whitman, which drives me crazy. There is no triad of selves; in fact, I didn't find the author good company, with his external, concrete eye. The objective details never gain in implicit resonance like those in Hemingway's "Great Two-Hearted River," for example, in which concrete actions assume ritualistic meaning. The book is a quick read, and it's a good thing, because there's only so much I can take of foam, little birds, wind direction, and dunes. (There's something passive about the narrator; I'm trying to remember something Bloom wrote about Robinson Crusoe in this context.) Perhaps it's a matter of temperament; I mean, I'm as introverted as they come, but I was lonely reading this book, and I kept waiting for augmenting meanings; perhaps it appeals to a more concrete, introverted type, a bird-watcher in other words.

The prose is beautiful in places, but it's not exactly Proust on the ocean, either. It's always so curious to me that American writers, to get elemental or visionary, go to nature, while Europeans still get to enjoy culture. I guess we don't have a Bois, like Proust, with which to associate feelings of longing, nor do we have earthy peasants or Duchesses whose very names carry traces of soil. And isn't there something ultimately selfish in the isolated nature-observer? Maybe that's part of the appeal-the freedom from the demands of family and culture-the illusion of primal interconnectedness. In any event, not Whitman! Matthew Arnold, sure! Ironically enough, I felt Arnold's "melancholy, long, withdrawing roar" every other paragraph. Ultimately, this is a thoroughly PAGAN book in which the soul-less thrumming of cold insect life is celebrated, the sun is worshipped, and human sacrifice (in the form of deaths and drownings at sea) is required. Have we progressed no farther in the past millennium or so? Cold comfort.

Product Description

In 1926, Henry Beston spent two weeks in a two-room cottage on the sand dunes of Cape Cod. He had not intended to stay longer, but, as he later wrote, "I lingered on, and as the year lengthened into autumn, the beauty and mystery of this earth and outer sea so possessed and held me that I could not go." Beston stayed for a year, meditating on humanity and the natural world. In The Outermost House, originally published in 1928, he poetically chronicled the four seasons at the beach; the ebb and flow of the tides, the migration of birds, storms, stars, and solitude. The landscape was his major character, and his writing provides a snapshot of the Cape, a place physically changed yet as soulful 80 years later. Like Henry D. Thoreau before him, and Rachel Carson after him, Beston was a writer of stunning beauty, importance and vision. Robert Finch once wrote of him, His are burnished, polished sentences, richly metaphoric and musical, that beg to be read aloud. The Outermost House is a classic of American nature literature. It is now available, for the first time, on audio. *Including an interview with Beston biographer, Dr. Daniel G. Payne *Unabridged on 5 CDs / approximately 5 hours *Narrated by Brett Barry

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening!!!.......2007-10-14

It's almost as if Henry Beston himself is reading his own words. The reader has a candor and tone that is absolutely perfect for this work and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this wonderfully executed piece from Silver Hollow Audio. I highly recommend this book to anoyne that enjoys either audio books, nature, or Cape Cod. I found myself quickly searching for the next disc as each one came to an end. The end of the last disc left me wanting for more - and with this set is a nicely done interview with Beston's biographer. The interview answered some lingering questions about both the house and the author himself. I rate this one a must have.

I love this book, and I love Jack, the mule. The story of a month long trip by mule cart from central Florida to the mountains of North Carolina by a woman who made the trip with her husband, not in the nineteenth century, but just a few years ago, "Ain't You Got No Cah?" is a delight. It's a journey through the rural southeast backroads and back in time, at a particular point in a marriage. Whether you'd never do such a thing or would love to do it yourself, reading this book makes you feel as if you were with the travelers every step of the way. It's a wonderful view of America's astonishingly hospitable people who live by the side of the road. If you are like me and never loved a mule before, you have a treat in store. A book for everyone, it will especially charm armchair travelers who would really like to sleep outside or see the world from a slow, meditative pace, and sturdily withstand danger from unexpected sources, but who don't have the time, ability or mule and wagon. "Ain't You Got No Cah?" is a treasure, well written and vastly readable.

What a wonderful adventure story; to think a couple would travel from Floriga to North Carolina in a mule drawn buggy in this day. We loved it.

Mule and wagon journey: what a trip! "Charming" best describes my initial reaction. This tale of a Ann & Roy's 600+ mile mule & wagon journey from their central Florida home to the North Carolina mountains. Yep, they did it for the adventure of it, just for fun. Should you be feeling "down," or discouraged by unkind people, here is the antidote! Almost without exception the people they found were kind and generous beyond their imaginations. Meador manages to write vignettes of these encounters without the repetitiousness that can dull interest in travel writing. The Meadors (both 60+) are invited into the homes of total strangers, they find lovely places to pitch their tent, they take careful care of their mule and gain spiritual insight. The writing is simple, straightforward and full of good humor. I am a nurse. Over and over I think: " What a great gift for someone who is sick."

                    Book Description

We are how we shop. From Mesopotamian merchants and the fairs of medieval Europe to marble palace department stores and now Wal-Mart and the Internet, social, cultural, economic, and moral forces have shaped our shopping. In this engaging and generously illustrated book, Ann Satterthwaite traces the history of shopping and considers its meaning and significance. According to Satterthwaite, shopping has become part of the American dream. To choose and to buy constitute not only a basic economic liberty but also the capacity to improve and transform ourselves. How we shop also reflects our culture, as in the twentieth century disposable incomes have grown, women's roles have changed, and new styles of shopping and advertising have made their impacts on an old adventure. But there is a downside. Shopping used to be a friendly business: shoppers and clerks knew each other, the country crossroads stores and downtown markets were social as much as economic hubs. Shopping was meshed with civic life--post offices, town halls, courts, and churches. In place of this almost vanished scene have come superstores and the franchises of international companies staffed by pressured clerks in featureless commercial wastelands. Shopping and community have been savagely divorced. However, shopping as a social plus need not be lost, says Satterthwaite. Examining trends in the United States and abroad where new approaches to an old activity are strengthening its social and civic role, she states that shopping is more than ever a public concern with profound public impacts.

This is a very well- written, extremely informative and thoughtful book useful to planners and anyone interested in understanding and influencing the way in which places to shop are developed. The breadth of the book, which includes a survey of shopping through the hstory as well as an examination of modern shopping via the interent, puts the act of shopping into context by exploring the relationship between community and shopping. Is it possible for the public and local government to mold and shape where and how shopping occurs without drastically impeding the ability of retailers and other providers to sell their products? Is the modern way of shopping destructive to the structure of community? These are questions that planners and communities must address. Reading this book will place the elements of the debate into perspective.

The store on each cheerfully illustrated page features a padded cloth item attached to the page with a Velcro tab, and which toddlers can pull off the page and insert in a tiny cloth shopping bag that comes with the book. For example, a miniature cloth rocking horse can come off the toy store's shelf and go into the bag-and a carton of milk can be removed from the supermarket counter. Then, back home, a refrigerator door opens and the milk carton attaches to a Velcro tab inside. Meanwhile, the rocking horse attaches to the bedroom floor, and a shirt from the clothing store can go into a dresser drawer. When it's time for kids to put the book away, it can be closed up tight with Velcro tables and a sturdy zipper, then put back into its vinyl carrying case. That soft transparent case features a snap to keep it shut and a cloth handle for carrying around. (Ages 2-5)

                                        Book Description

The exercises comprising this laboratory manual are intended to supplement the text Concepts in Biology, but they can be used with any introductory-level biology text. Laboratory exercises begin with a list of safety issues that students need to be aware of. These items identify caustic chemicals, equipment that needs special care or handling, and health or safety hazards a careless student may encounter.

We suggest that students use the laboratory manual as a workbook and record data and answers to questions in the spaces provided. The laboratory gives students the opportunity to "get involved in biology." They go beyond reading and studying and actually enter into the process of doing science.

                                                  Book Description

Twenty-six-year-old Nicci Bradford doesn't exactly love her job fixing the grammar in company brochures, or living in Boston, or going on awkward fix-ups with men she barely knows. What she does love is Kung Fu movies...especially the ones starring Jackie Chan. Their timeless and inspired wisdom offers her a philosophy of life. The problem is she doesn't have much of a life to philosophize about. But Jackie Chan is also a pretty good action hero. And when opportunity-and risk-present themselves in unexpected ways, it's up to Nicci to follow her hero's example, focus on her goal, and strike...

Light read, the main character can really get on your nerves, she just needs to get over herself.

2 out of 5 stars Made me feel broody and cranky.......2005-12-13

Don't be fooled by the fancy-pants pink cover with the kitschy coffee cup on the front - C&KF is no chick-lit offering. Brooding, sad, frustrated, unhappy, disgruntled - all adjectives which describe the main character, who is going through a shift in her life where she is being forced to finally decide what she wants and needs to be fulfilled.

Most readers will see the end coming, and there are no surprises here, other than the fact that I'm surprised I was able to finish this dry novel. Not particularly recommended.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars Coffee & Kung Fu.......2005-02-04

This book is a really quick and light read, and I really enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I thought that Brichoux put a nice spin on the typicaly "chick lit" genre by introducing a character who is absolutely in love with (or maybe obsessed with) kung fu movies - especially the ones that have Jackie Chan in them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a fast, light, and fun read.

4 out of 5 stars predictable, but fun and worth it like a good kung fu movie.......2004-10-08

the story is predictable, i knew just what would happen by the second chapter, but perhaps that is what the author was going for. with any good kung fu movie, you know what will happen, but you watch and enjoy it and keep watching; this book is the same. it is well written, fun, a solid story. i don't read too much chick-lit, but this was definately worth it and i would reccommend it to anyone. a great quick book to cleanse the pallette between other books or enjoy on a rainy day or at the beach. you can't lose with this book.

1 out of 5 stars this brew has had its last kick.......2004-09-14

Coffee and Kung Fu. Here's my Reading Rainbow synopsis (sans Jordi LaForge). Coffee and Kung Fu is about a 20 something bimbo who lacks personality and authenticity but makes up for her inadequecies through an unhealthy obsession with drinking boring coffee in the AM and ritual Jassimine tea drinking elsewhere. She has some friends in the general sense of the word (meaning, they all want to set her up or need her for something) and works as a copywriter, correcting grammatical errors such as dangling participles. She falls for a painfully cliché rich guy who wears Italian leather shoes and drives an even more agonizingly typical SUV. She goes out with him for the nookie, but is secretly in love with a pathetic Starbucks worker who lets homeless guys come in after hours. They don't say he works at Starbucks but the author talks about him wearing a green apron and I don't know too many coffee shops who have green apron uniforms. Nicci (main character) relates everything back to Jackie Chan Kung Fu movies. Everything she experiences is parallelled to Jackie like, eating coals, two chop sticks being stronger than one. You follow? Right, I wouldn't care either. So Rob, the cliché rich sailboat rental company owning guy ends up proposing and Nicci says no way and henceforth runs away straight into the arms of pathetic Ethan whom she's only exchanged bizare pleasantries with. Meanwhile, Nicci's grandfather, whom she shares a close bond with is sick and eventually dies and Ethan shows up at the hospital, hugs Nicci and then travels back to wherever he came from. Nicci desides to purchase two tickets to Hong Kong, gives one to Ethan and he says, "ok, see you there in a week". The End. The book is laced with italics of what she thinks in her head but is too chicken and too ordinary to say. She has a bland commentary on things in life such as public transit and tea pots which makes the book rather monotonous and ill-exciting. As a character she paints her self to be a lone reed in the wind but is practically just like any other salmon trying to push through society's force only to return to the very place you don't want to be. I applaud graphic artist who designed the front cover because its pretty and bright. I like judging books by its cover and from my opinion, looks like the graphic arts degree paid off and the English degree didn't. I do not recommend this book.
