Book Description
Back to the city, or back to nature? Seattle author David Williams shows us how we can get the best of both. Botany and bugs, geology and geese, and creeks and crows; living in a major city doesn't have to separate us from the natural world. Stepping away from a guidebook format, Williams presents the reader with a series of essays and maps that weave personal musings, bits of humor, natural history observations, and scientific data into a multi-textured perspective of life in the city--descriptions of his journeys as a naturalist in an urban landscape. Williams addresses questions that an observant person asks in an urban environment. What did Seattle look like before Europeans got here? How does the area's geologic past affect us? Why have some animals thrived and other languished? How are we affected by the species with whom we share the urban environment and how do we affect them? This book captures all of the distinctive flavors of the Emerald City, urban and natural.

Smartly written -- but what about the rabbits?.......2007-04-01
Packed with interesting information about Seattle. The book must have been written before the rabbit problem started in the area around Greenlake. A chapter for a second edition? I subtract one star for the "ring-necked gull?" on page 19 and the lack of an index.
A wonderful introduction to the land.......2006-03-30
I just moved to Seattle a couple of weeks ago and was given this book to read. Can I just say that it is by far one of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of meeting?
The author explores all sorts of natural phenomena around Seattle, from the geological quirks to the water quality to the crows. I learned a LOT about the local area, as far as the natural setting goes.
The writing is superior--it's obvious he's done his research, both in books and in the field. I can't imagine how much time he put into this. And he has an excellent sense of humor that had my giggling every couple of pages.
Highly, highly, highly recommended
Fantastic local history and science.......2005-11-15
I am loudly and joyously singing the praises of "The Street-Smart Naturalist: Field Notes from Seattle"; this is the sort of book about Seattle's natural history that I was particularly searching for. Keeping mostly within the city limits, David Williams talks about natural boglands and bald eagles, the fossils and stones that make up Seattle's skyscrapers, naturally occuring plants and recent imports, tectonic plates and city planning, radiocarbon dating of the last earthquake by the trees displaced and drowned, local microclimates and how they affect the weather (Capitol Hill gets 11 inches more of rain per year than the University of Washington campus ten minutes away) -- Williams has it all, and recounts his anecdotes with a dry and wonderful sense of humor. He traces creeks and chases crows, catalogues billion year old granite, and tells anyone who will listen about the fine quarries and the fossil beds from whence they came. This is exactly the sort of local history that I wanted to hear, happily jumping from the geological aeons to the conservation programs of the last fifty years. Every Seattleite interested in history or nature should buy this book. Non-Seattleites interested in urban orienteering/nature-in-the-city are also likely to be fans. Go go David Williams.
Great nature walks without leaving your armchair.......2005-10-04
I learned a lot about Seattle that I can't wait to tell visitors (guess what's under I-5?!) and got inspired to take some of the urban nature walks myself, like all the way along Thornton Creek. What I liked best was the view of what Seattle historically looked like - accompanied by really nice maps!
A wonderful perspective on a green city.......2005-09-30
As a city-dweller I love cafes, the opera, the night-life.... but I also need the trees, the birds, and the Puget Sound. Williams' wonderful collection of notes on my hometown, Seattle, are a fun read and have helped me discover things I would have never discovered otherwise. If you live in Seattle, or even if you're coming for a visit and want an alternative to the regular tourist attractions, this book is for you. Enjoy!
Book Description
Demand for timber and fibre continues to grow and is being met by increased reliance on plantation forestry. Many of the plantations that are being grown around the globe are non-native species that have characteristics of rapid growth and good commercial qualities. In some cases, the high rates of production are a result of the absence of native herbivore and diseases. This limited pest status is threatened as pest species move around the globe. At the same time there is concern about threats of these non-native plantation species on native communities and the impact of changing climates on forest productivity. This volume explores many of these issues for the first time.

The best source of "green" travel and adventure around........1999-08-20
This collection of well-researched information is inspirational. I've used it over and over again to plan new, different and interesting time off. My copy is dog-eared and marked up from the research (and dreaming). I keep it on a shelf at work as a reminder of everything else life offers us. My only question to the author is when is the update coming out!

The Perfect Sidekick To Marieb's 6th Edition Text.......2004-02-01
This laboratory manual is the perfect follow-up to Marieb's 6th Edition for many, many reasons. It not only goes into greater detail about material presented in the book with suggested lab exercises, but also successfully breaks down all the "fluff" into an understandable format. Utilizing the effectiveness of the PhysioEX CD-ROM and the many detailed diagrams which come in a massive abundance, this lab manual is perfectly suitable for anyone looking for an extra reference source to use. Overall there are 46 different exercises which closely mirror the progressing content of the book, along with 46 more practice exercises that're really quizzes over the covered material. The many highlighted phrases and bolded words really help to point out what is most crucial to memorize and (as I've found after taking my first test) really are a big help. All in all I'd have to say this lab manual is nothing short of spectacular - from the way it meticulously guides the student through the actual lab step by step, to the way the information is presented in an understandable manner. The price is pretty reasonable, however the only advice I do have for potential buyers is to try and buy a hardback copy if available. The one I own that came with my text is a spiral-bound paperback and is very susceptible to damage. Nevertheless, if you're not able to find a hardback copy I'd still recommend this to anyone taking Anatomy & Physiology simply for its priceless information.
Book Description
Elaine Marieb's clearly written and comprehensive lab manual guides readers through well-planned lab activities and features new illustrations and full-color photographs that help readers visualize and master lab concepts. Designed to stand alone or for use with other materials, the manual contains anatomical and physiological terminology essential for use in one- or two-semester anatomy and physiology courses.
PhyisoEx 4.0 now includes an entirely new laboratory simulation on Acid/Base Balance that focuses on respiratory and metabolic acidosis and alkalosis, as well as renal and respiratory compensation. The lab is accompanied by a written exercise. The Histology tutorial now features 40 new slides plus written worksheets to increase reader comprehension. For college instructors and students, or anyone interested in human anatomy and physiology.

Book Description
One important precondition for modeling multiphase flow and transport processes in the hydrosystem "subsurface" is the general formulation of a model. The objective of this book is to present a consistent, easily accessible formulation of the fundamental phenomena and concepts, to give a uniform description of mathematical and numerical modeling, and to show the latest developments in the field of simulation of multiphase processes, especially in porous and heterogeneous media. Some general aspects which affect the selection of the relevant processes and the corresponding parameters as well as the mathematical and numerical model concepts are discussed in detail.

Book Description
"Let your fiction grow out of the land beneath your feet." Willa Cather's remark describes her own reasons for re-creating in her powerful fiction the Nebraska frontier of her youth. The vast Great Plains, where the earth has only recently come beneath the plow and the sky is huge and open, mirrors the uniquely American ethic of her characters: their heroic aspirations and stoicism, their passion for creativity, their rebelliousness of spirit. This volume, the first in The Library of America's authoritative three-volume collected Cather, includes the story collection "The Troll Garden," her first work of fiction, along with the beloved novels "O Pioneers!," "The Song of the Lark," "My Antonia," and "One of Ours," which earned a Pulitzer Prize.
Customer Reviews:
Her talent is breath-taking.......2006-06-21
Somehow, though I love to read,I had missed Willa Cather. I had already read and loved Jane Austen but it was not until I read "My Antonia" that I realized what I had missed all of these years. Willa Cather is truly a genius of the written word. To call her writing 'good' or her stories 'enjoyable' is to understate her talent. Her writing is beautiful though the stories are simple. Each place she writes about makes one believe that she lived there all her life. Her book "Saphira and the Slave Girl" would make you think she had lived there and in that time. Many of her stories are out on the prairie and seem to glow with the golden light from the sun on the fields of grain. Her characterizations are simple but profound and she often throws in a dramatic tale told by a character. And yes, this physical book is also beautiful and a joy to read. It makes one wonder about ever reading a cheap paperback again.
My Antonia.......2001-09-02
This book was very interesting had a good theme and plot.
It kept the reader on edge throughout the entire book. I would recommend it to everyone.

Some of Cather's finest work.......2000-10-03
Like all the volumes in the Library of America series, this book is beautiful and made to last. Some readers may be bothered by the thin paper, but it allows so much to be packed into a handy book. As the title states, this is a collection from Cather's early work (her first "first novel," _Alexander's Bridge_, is missing). _The Troll Garden_ is a collection of Cather's early short stories, most in the manner of H. James and have a fin-de-siecle tone. "The Sculptor's Funeral," which depicts a town's inability to recognize achievement in any form but monetary, is perhaps the best. That and two other stories were revised by Cather for _Youth and the Bright Medusa_ (1920 an available in LoA 57 _Stories, Poems, and Other Writings_). Reading the versions side-by-side, one can achieve insight into Cather's growing abilities as a writer. However, the most rewarding read in this volume is _My Antonia_. Cather's first masterpiece depicts the lives of Jim Burden and Antonia Shimerda from their arrival in Black Hawk, Nebraska to twenty years after Jim leaves Black Hawk for a life in the East. Antonia remains in Nebraska, becomes a maid in town, and marries (twice). The theme of the book, from Jim's perspective, is aptly captured in the epigraph: "optima dies . . . prima fugit" (from Virgil's _Aeneid_). Again like all volumes in the LoA, a chronology of the authors life, a "Note on the Texts" and a few notes, containing information on allusions and translations of foreign words and phrases appear at the end of the volume.
Absolutely perfect fiction.......1999-05-21
One of my all-time favorite books. Attractively packaged on acid-free paper. Very classic looking. And the fiction is excellent! Her stories about the Plains, the Southwest, Chicago, and Quebec are perfect works of art. I especially liked "Tom Outland's Story" contained within "The Professor's House."
