          Abstract:
Minisatellites are tandem repeat loci, with repeat units ranging in size from 5bp to 100bp. The total lengths of repeat arrays vary from about 0.5kb to 30kb, and excessive variability in allele length at human minisatellite loci is the result of germline-specific complex recombination events generating new length alleles. Minisatellite alleles also mutate to new lengths in somatic cells, but this occurs at a much lower rate than in the germline. Since recombination is involved in minisatellite mutation, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a suitable model organism that has been employed to further dissect the molecular basis of mutation events at human minisatellites. These studies have shown that the mutational behaviour of a minisatellite in meiosis is not determined by the intrinsic properties of the repeat array, but are highly dependent on the position of the minisatellite in the genome. The processes for minisatellite mutation in yeast and humans are identical in the sense that mutation is indeed driven by meiotic recombination, but differ with regard to the types of structural changes that are generated by the recombination events. Tetrad analyses showed that inter-allelic transfers of repeats occur by conversion and not crossing over, and that several chromatids can be involved in successive recombination events in one meiosis, resulting in mutant alleles in several spores. It has been demonstrated that the genes SPO11 and RAD50, involved in the initiation of recombination events, are required for human minisatellite mutation in yeast meiosis. Intrinsic properties of the repeat array appear to determine the stability of human minisatellites in yeast mitosis, since mitotic mutation rates in yeast are highly variable between minisatellites. The repair genes RAD27 and DNA2 stabilise human minisatellites in yeast mitosis, while RAD5 has no effect on mitotic stability. MSH2 depresses human minisatellite frequency in meiotic cells of yeast.

            Description:
Genome stability is of primary importance for the survival and proper functioning of all organisms. Double-strand breaks (DSBs) arise spontaneously during growth, or can be created by external insults. Repair of DSBs by homologous recombination provides an efficient and fruitful pathway to restore chromosomal integrity. Exciting new work in yeast has lately provided insights into this complex process. Many of the proteins involved in recombination have been isolated and the details of the repair mechanism are now being unraveled at the molecular level. In this review, we focus on recent studies which dissect the recombinational repair of a single broken chromosome. After DSB formation, a decision is made regarding the mechanism of repair (recombination or non-homologous end-joining). This decision is under genetic control. Once committed to the recombination pathway, the broken chromosomal ends are resected by a still unclear mechanism in which the DNA damage checkpoint protein Rad24 participates. At this stage several proteins are recruited to the broken ends, including Rad51p, Rad52p, Rad55p, Rad57p, and possibly Rad54p. A genomic search for homology ensues, followed by strand invasion, promoted by the Rad51 filament with the participation of Rad55p, Rad57p and Rad54p. DNA synthesis then takes place, restoring the resected ends. Crossing-over formation depends on the length of the homologous recombining sequences, and is usually counteracted by the activity of the mismatch repair system. Given the conservation of the repair mechanisms and genes throughout evolution, these studies have profound implications for other eukaryotic organisms.

Pieces of broken pots are scattered over the desert hillsides of the Southwest. The Indians there treat them with respect -- "Every piece of clay is a piece of someone's life," they say. And the children try to imagine those lives that took place in the desert they think of as their own.

Clay has its own small voice, and sings. Its song has lasted for thousands of years. And Byrd Baylor's prose-poem as simple and powerful as the clay pots, sings too.

                5 out of 5 stars Preserving Heritage.......2000-03-28

When Clay Sings, tells the story of Indian pottery lying in the sands of the desert of the American Southwest. This pottery cries out with stories from the lives, customs, and thoughts of the people. The legacy of their lives are wrapped up in the art. The beautiful Indian artwork on each page matches the lyrical, imagery effect of the text. A great book for introducing children to Indian heritage or pottery in general.

5 out of 5 stars beautifully illustrated, lyrical poem about pottery.......1998-11-23

This is a book I would give to my grownup friends who are potters, or graphic artisits, or parents of budding artists.... I was drawn in by the title and the cover art, and enchanted by what I found...truly a treasure! It is about the centuries-old tradition of pottery and the stillness necessary to hear the small voice in the clay as it sings to the potter. A wonderful book to give as a gift during these holidays so filled with noise and technology and BUY ME! Enjoy.

                    Book Description

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is widely used a a non-invasive means of obtaining clinical images and of studing tissue metabolism in vivo. In this book, the principles of NMR are introduced, a description is given of the ways in which NMR can be used to study living systems, and the scope and limitations of the technique are discussed. While the focus is on applications in man (in particular on physiological and biochemical studies), descriptions are also given of the ways in which basic NMR research studies can complement and aid interpretation of clinical findings. The book begins with an introduction to NMR as a method of studying living systems. The following three chapters give illustative applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging (MRI), including the new methods of functional imaging. The latter half of the book provides a more theoretical and technical description of NMR. There are chapters on the basic principles of the techniques, the parameters that characterize NMR signals, instrumentation, and pulse sequences. The book is written at a level that should be appropriate for newcomers to NMR and for users of NMR who do not have a strong background in the physical sciences.

                          Book Description

This is a unique compilation of surface preparation principles and techniques for plastics, thermosets, elastomers, and metals bonding. With emphasis on the practical, it draws together in a single source technical principles of surface science and surface treatments technologies of plastics, elastomers, and metals. It is both a reference and a guide for engineers, scientists, practitioners of surface treatment, researchers, students, and others involved in materials adhesion and processing.

This book describes and illustrates the surface preparations and operations that must be applied to a surface before acceptable adhesive bonding is achieved. It is meant to be a comprehensive overview, including more detailed explanation where necessary, in a continuous and logical progression. This book is intended to be a handbook for reference of surface treating processes. The more technical chapters can be bypassed to study the applied chapters. The text is accessible to readers with a college-level background in mathematics and chemistry, but an in-depth knowledge of adhesion technology is not required.

                                  Book Description

Materials scientists, polymer chemists, surface physicists and materials engineers will find this book a complete and detailed treatise on the field of polymer brushes, their synthesis, characterization and manifold applications. In a first section, the various synthetic pathways and different surface materials are introduced and explained, followed by a second section covering important aspects of characterization and analysis in both flat surfaces and particles. These specific surface initiated polymerization (SIP) systems such as linear polymers, homopolymers, block copolymers, and hyperbranched polymers are unique compared to previously reported systems by chemisorption or physisorption. They have found their way in both large-scale and miniature applications of polymer brushes, which is covered in the last section. Such 'hairy' surfaces offer fascinating opportunities for addressing numerous problems of both academic and, in particular, industrial interest: high-quality, functional or protective coatings, composite materials, surface engineered particles, metal-organic interfaces, biological applications, micro-patterning, colloids, nanoparticles, functional devices, and many more. It is the desire of the authors that this book will be of benefit to readers who want to "brush-up on polymers".

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, well written and comprehensive book.......1999-11-02

One of my main areas of research is polymer surface characterization and surface treatment. As Project Area Manager for Polymeric Materials at the Institute for Surface Chemistry in Stockholm, it was my job to be familiar with the literature in this area. During that period I read many books and this was one of my very favorites.

The book is well presented and easy to follow. It manages to present the subject in a comprehensive and interesting manner with just the right level of detail. The major characterization methods such as (ESCA (XPS) and SIMS are described as well as an unusually good coverage of the tricky subject of contact angle measurement. Similarly, the methods for modifying polymers such as corona, flame and plasma treatments, plus surface grafting are all covered in a clear manner. The author is obviously an expert on this subject. One particularly useful aspect was that the author considers the industrial aspects of the treatment methods. He mentions topics such as treatment and equipment cost, reproducibility and compares the relative merits of different treatment methods. In my experience, it is unusual to find a combination of a high scientific level and awareness of industrial considerations.

This is one of a handful of truly invaluable books in my personal collection, highly recommended.

                                        Book Description

Time division multiplexing (TDM) has been the fundamental basis for adding capacity to digital telecommunications networks for decades. However, within the past two years, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has been emerging as an important and widely deployed complement to TDM. Sales of systems based on the new technology have risen at breathtaking speed. The driving force behind this sales explosion was the unexpected rapid exhaustion of long distance fiber network capacity. This fiber exhaust, combined with favorable economics for WDM, led to the use of this technology over other alternatives.

The WDM deployment raises fundamental and challenging problems that require novel and innovative solutions. This volume presents papers from an interdisciplinary workshop held at DIMACS on multichannel optical networks. Leading computer science theorists and practitioners discussed admissions control, routing and channel assignment, multicasting and protection, and fault-tolerance. Book Description

There Are Jews in My House is one of the most striking debuts of recent years. Tracing the lives and aspirations of Russians living in Moscow and Brooklyn, these poignant, sad and funny stories create a luminous new literary world.

In the title story, set during the Second World War, Galina, a gentile, offers refuge to a Jewish friend and her daughter, only to find herself increasingly resentful of their presence in her home. In “Mistress,” a nine-year-old boy, new to America, escorts his grandmother to her weekly doctors’ appointments to interpret her myriad complaints. At the same time, he becomes aware that his grandfather may be involved with another woman. And in “Love Lessons–Mondays, 9 A.M.” a young math teacher assigned to teach a sex education class becomes all too aware that her students are more experienced than she is.

Ms.Vapnyar's stories are some of the best I have read. I only hope she will produce many more! Thank you, Lara!

This is a well crafted and very readable collection of short stories. The powerful title story is a frightening account of a Russian Jew and her daughter who are hidden by a gentile friend with second thoughts. Other stories touch on the Russian immigrant experience in Brooklyn. Her subjects are treated with empathy and compassion.

3 out of 5 stars Admirable if Mundane First Effort.......2005-04-28

There Are Jews at My House is a noble, unforced, and unpretentious first effort from an ESL author who shows promise of coming into her own. Contrary to the back panel blurb's assertion, Vapnyar is not the Russian Jane Austen. Still, the stories are vivid and subtle, showing the positive signs of restraint and absorbing narrative.

The inadequacy of Vapnyar's English can be overcome--she will almost surely produce a more elegant product the next time around. (Do not confuse, however, her limited stylistic bravura with an asserted style--Lara is clearly, and smartly, playing it safe with the language).

The biggest problem is that most of the stories in this fiction/creative nonfiction tome can't be classified as extraordinary or extremely compelling. The title story, ripe with the most subject matter, is thankfully, understated and adequate. The best pieces are probably "Lydia's Grove" and "Mistress," with "Love Lessons" a runner-up. Other childhood recollections are prosaic (I'm probably biased as an ex-Soviet) and probably wouldn't be printed if it weren't for the author's Russian backdrops.

While Vapnyar has some distance to cover stylistically, and could stand to inject more humor into her stories (believe me, "Mistress" is full of potential), as a valuable early entry in the hopefully soon-to-be Russian-American canon, this book should not be dismissed .

4 out of 5 stars A Slice of Russian Life.......2005-03-20

This book of short stories presents interesting vignettes of Russian and Russian American life, a viewpoint we don't read a lot about in this country. With the exception of the title story they are all written from a child or young person's point of view. They are very well written and engaging and if they were published individually in a magazine I might even call them excellent. But standing alone in book form I found them not worth the expense of purchasing a book.

5 out of 5 stars A great piece of creative realism!.......2005-01-04

I went out and bought this book based on a review in one of the free newspapers handed out at major train stations in New York, and it was a terrific read! Having grown up in Russia around the same time as Ms. Vapnyar, I can confirm that her portrayal of life both in Russia proper and little Russia in Brooklyn is exceptionally accurate. Yet, though the book wasn't an eye-opener to me, it was entertaining and thoughtful. Each story had its own unexpected twist and ended a bit abruptly, leaving it to the reader to ponder its final meaning.

The opening story is the longest and most ambiotious of the book. It is also the scariest, though again not the way one would expect. My favorite, however, was the story called Mistress, portraying psychological struggles of recent Russian immigrants living in Brooklyn. From the nine-year-old boy Misha who is forced to assist his linguistically handicapped grandmother to his grandfather finding himself unable to work in America and earn his respect, Vapnyar's depth and precision in revealing their most intimate feelings are truly unbelievable. A Dostoyevsky influence is visible, but Vapnyar's writing is much lighter and less imposing.

Overall, this is an excellent book combining an intriguing literary style with good entertainment, warmth and food for one's thoughts and soul.
