    Book Description

How could ecological thinking animate an epistemology capable of addressing feminist, multicultural, and other post-colonial concerns? Starting from an epistemological approach implicit in Rachel Carson's scientific practice, Lorraine Code elaborates the creative, restructuring resources of ecology for a theory of knowledge. She critiques the instrumental rationality, abstract individualism, and exploitation of people and places that western epistemologies of mastery have legitimated, to propose a politics of epistemic location, sensitive to the interplay of particularity and diversity, and focused on responsible epistemic practice. Drawing on ecological theory and practice, on naturalized epistemology, and on feminist and post-colonial theories, Code analyzes extended examples from developmental psychology, and from two "natural" institutions of knowledge production--medicine and law. These institutions lend themselves well to a reconfigured naturalism. They are, in practice, empirically-scientifically informed, specifically situated, and locally interpretive. With human subjects as their "objects" of knowledge, they invoke the responsibility requirements central to Code's larger project. This book discusses a wide range of literature in philosophy, social science, and ethico-political thought. Highly innovative, it will generate productive conversations in feminist theory, and in the ethics and politics of knowledge more broadly conceived.

        Book Description

If some of our values have contributed to the creation of a toxic and damaged planet, and to the maintenance of systems of oppression based on gender, race and other types of differences, any attempts to foster alternative values requires attention to social and as well as ecological concerns. Feminism and Ecological Communities presents a bold and passionate rethinking of the ecofeminist movement. It is one of the first books to acknowledge the importance of postmodern feminist arguments against ecofeminism while persuasively supporting a strong new case for ecofeminism.

Chris J. Cuomo explores the dualisms of nature/culture and masculine/feminine that defend many contemporary ecofeminist positions and questions traditional feminist analyses of gender and caring. Cuomo addresses these key issues by drawing on recent work in feminist ethics as well as the work of diverse figures including Aristotle, John Dewey and Donna Haraway.

          Book Description

This ground-breaking collection is the first to focus on the exclusively philosophical aspects of ecological feminism. It addresses basic questions about the conceptual underpinnings of "women-nature connections" and emphasizes the importance of seeing sexism and the exploitation of the environment as parallel forms of domination.

The book addresses basic questions of conceptual analysis and justification concerning ecofeminism and its philosophical underpinnings. The essays discuss: whether all ecofeminist positions can be considered feminist; what obstacles must be overcome for the serious maturing of ecofeminist philosophy; how ecofeminist philosophy is distinctive among feminisms, environmental philosophies and environmental activism; and what ecofeminist philosophy adds to the field of environmental philosophy. The book includes contributors who are both supportive and critical of ecofeminist positions.

Contributors: Douglas J. Buege, Jim Cheney, Christine J. Cuomo, Victoria Davion, Lori Gruen, David K. Johnson, Phillip Payne, Val Plumwood, Deborah Slicer, Karen J. Warren.

I am totally new to this "ism." Thus, I find this book can offer a good review about ecofeminism.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Work!.......2004-01-08

I read this book for the Jan/Feb 2004 LD Topic: "A government's obligation to protect the environment ought to have precedence over its obligation to promote economic development." I have to say I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in the connections between the environment and feminism. I especially liked the discussion of how women and the environment are connected through language through the use of word's like "Mother Nature." That use in particular was to put it in a word pimp. Warren covers all areas of ecofeminist thought, and is extremely fair to those critical of ecofeminism. To anyone interested in learning about how our domination of the environment undergirds our domination of other groups this book is perfect. As I said before, this work by a "street philosopher," is simply pimp. Highest recomendations!

            ECOFEMINIST PHILOSOPHY
A WESTERN PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT IT IS AND WHY IT MATTERS
            By Karen J. Warren

A Review by Wendell G. Bradley

Warren calls herself a `street philosopher'. And, true to her calling, this professor of philosophy at Macalester College reaches the ordinary reader on important issues.

Ordinary philosophy is already superseded in chapter one entitled: `Nature is a Feminist Issue'. Women, world-wide, are shown to experience environmental harm disproportionately. And, they are organizing, as women, against related dominations.

For Warren, dominations tend to follow whenever (allegedly) ethically relevant hierarchies designate their `others' as inferiors. Subordinations, however, have to be first justified by `a logic of domination'. Humans, for example, might be deemed superior to nature because they have the ability to manipulate it. But, without a logic of domination, `superiority' could just as well lead to stewardship.

Patriarchy provides our current logic of domination. Under its conceptual framework, men become associated with reason and volition (read: intelligence and public roles). The result is a prevailing male-other bias that links women and nature--women too naturally something, to be allowed this or that. Accordingly, Warren recognizes both gender and ecology as good points of departure for an environmental ethic, hence ecofeminism.

Warren begins her `quilting' of an ecofeminist philosophy in chapter three. Here, she masterfully interrogates and reconceptualizes the reductive and essentialist rationality of today's male-other bias. Various belief examinations arise from the `cognitive dissonances' she brings to light in an examined patriarchy. At a minimum our loss of ecological integrity has required justification via a logic of domination. Our human spirit, however, can become caring enough to resist oppressions and destructions, especially in one's home place.

Accordingly, Warren introduces a `care-sensitive' ethic. It is characterized by a `loving eye' that focuses on a contextual orientation, a more optimistic understanding of self, an inclusivist ethical pluralism, incorporations of emotional intelligence, and a nonprivileging social justice. Through our spiritual ability to care, these qualities combine to make nature `morally deserving'. Thus, Warren's care-sensitive ethic makes a fundamental contribution to a possible ecological flourishing.

The idea of ecofeminism, itself, is not particularly new, but Warren's insights, clarifications and arguments are. Her overall philosophical synthesis is both refreshing and convincing.

Wendell G. Bradley, is a retired professor of Human Ecology and author of `The Gift of Morality'.

                      Book Description

This book summarizes highlights in the field of free radicals in medicine and biology, with a detailed analysis of the extensive recent literature. It describes results from experimental research work on dust inhalation, hypoxia, and environmental toxicology that uses morphologic methods such as electron microscopy, interference microscopy and time-lapse techniques in tissue cultures. The volume discusses free radical reactions that are probably involved in the pathogenesis of both physical and chemical environmental hazards. It lists radical scavengers that function as useful prophylactic agents in case of unavoidable exposure. A short history of dust diseases that have challenged mankind since prehistoric times serves as an introduction to this comprehensive treatise. It is hoped that by covering this field in one monograph the increasingly recognized and important role of both oxygen- and nitrogen-centred radicals in disease pathogenesis will become clearer. The enclosed CD includes nearly 25.000 literature citations useful as a reference source for researchers, clinicians and students.

                                Book Description

In recent years, the field of radical chemistry has undergone explosive growth. Although its roots lie in organic chemistry, the implications of its findings are having enormous impact in a broad range of disciplines, and we now have evidence for radical involvement in over 100 diseases. As important as this is, however, the subject of radicals and reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) is complex and barely touched upon in the curriculum of medical schools. Reactive Oxygen Metabolites brings the subject within the grasp of even those with little preparation in chemistry. From the basic chemistry of radicals through the pathology, the author provides a clear and thorough introduction to ROMs and their importance to human health and disease. Exhaustively researched and referenced, this highly readable work will give you the ability to critically analyze and evaluate many pathological problems arising from the chemistry of ROMs and reduce them to their lowest common denominator. It is the ideal vehicle for people who need to understand the importance of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in human health and disease but have neither the time, the inclination, nor perhaps the background to work their way through the mountain of original literature.

                                  Description:
It has been proposed that molecules derived from reactions that occur between the ozone and the lung tissue mediate nonpulmonary effects caused by ozone exposure. Free radicals are among those proposed molecules that flow throughout the bloodstream to other organs producing lipid peroxidation. In order to elucidate on aspect of ozone toxicity mechanisms, we measured the thiobarbituric acid-reactive products (TBARS), as an index of lipid peroxidation, in a variety of brain regions in rats exposed to 1ppm of ozone for 1, 3, 6, and 9h. Another group exposed to 9h of O"3 plus 3h of clean-air exposure was also included. The results showed an important increase in TBARS content in all the studied structures. Such effect seems to be transient. These findings indicates that acute ozone exposure can produce cerebral peroxidation as it has been found in rats exposed chronically, suggesting an involvement of free radicals in brain effects of ozone exposure.

A new semi-implicit iterative algorithm was proposed to deal with the complicated relationships among the chemical reaction, the macromolecular structure and the chemorheological property. Then the numerical computation expressions of the average molecular weight, the monomer conversion, and the initiator concentration were deduced, and the computer simulation of the reactive extrusion process for free radical polymerization was carried out, on basis of which reactive processing conditions can be optimized. Description:
Markers of oxidative stress in response to hypoxia and reoxygenation were assessed in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Adult shrimp were either exposed to hypoxia (1 mg O"2/L) for 6, 12, or 24 h followed by 1-h reoxygenation, or exposed to hypoxia for 24 h followed by 1- to 6-h reoxygenation. In all cases, shrimp maintained at constant normoxia were used as controls. Spectrophotometric techniques were applied to analyze lactate concentration, superoxide radical (O"2^@?^-) production, lipid peroxidation (TBARS), and antioxidant capacity status in muscle, hepatopancreas, and gill samples. Results indicate differences among tissues, even under control conditions. O"2^@?^- production and TBARS levels were higher in hepatopancreas than in gill or muscle. No effect of exposure to hypoxia was found. However, reoxygenation following exposure to hypoxia was found to affect the oxidative metabolism of muscle and hepatopancreas from cultured shrimp. Lactate concentration and O"2^@?^- production increased while antioxidant capacity decreased in hepatopancreas and muscle in the first hours of reoxygenation. This could translate into tissue damage, which may significantly jeopardize the commercial aquaculture product.

                                          Book Description

it's been a long time since i read a book written in stream-of-consciousness, and when i picked up and started this book, i realized
that i'd attempted to read it before and, i guess, just hadn't been in the mood to attempt it at some previous time. i'm glad i persisted.

the immediacy of the 14-year-old main character's experiences is visceral and moving. the book is described as a [...] it is also a sometimes erotic, often comic, and almost always relentlessly intriguing word picture of a painfully excised slice-of-life on glaring display. the 14-year-old's confusion, and his labyrynthine interior exploration for the causes of the effects he sees so keenly (effects which are described vividly and sympathetically) open understanding to the reader. grossman is masterful.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......1997-10-22

Grossman is on of the best Israeli novelist of the modern ages. This is a beautiful, beautiful description of growing up. Take this book and a day off, because you wouldn't let it leave your hands. One of the best books I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A journey of one boy into adolesence and out of this world........1997-02-07

A young boy named Aaron struggles to get away from the things in his life that appall him the most: food, his family, girls(with one exception), and the war. With his over-self-reflection Aaron is dragged into his own world of masochism and special words saved like pennies in a jar for rainy days. He is a boy that is mixed up and not so mixed up. He composes the child that we have all been for at least one moment in time. He is the future, he has been part of the past, and he is ageless while still being locked within an age
