Much has changed since the previous turn of the century, but our appreciation of the restrained and peaceful beauty of Cornish, New Hampshire has remained. In the early 1900s, Cornish was renowned as an artist's colony filled with magical gardens that appeared in the work of many resident artists like Frances Houston, William Hyde, Maria Oakey Dewing, and Stephen and Maxfield Parrish. In many cases, the fame of the gardens outlasted the reputation of the artist, but in A Place of Beauty, the art and the gardens that provided inspiration are seen as inseparable.

Garden admirers will enjoy this book as much as any art historian. Twelve different houses are discussed in detail--the owners, architects, gardeners, and their stylistic goals are revealed through fascinating text, historical photographs, and reproductions of the works of art that were created by the talented residents. Between painting, sculpting, and writing, Cornish's residents also found time to be surprisingly competitive in the realm of gardening. While each house maintained a clear style, the overall beauty was discussed and judged with a fairly critical eye, and professional designers such as Ellen Shipman were brought in for expert consultations. As one visitor said, "They bore me to death with their houses and their poor little flower beds." The text is filled with personal notes, diary entries, and letters--the Cornish residents were a prolific lot. And while the community was described by one female citizen as "a place where men are acknowledged to be more important than the women," the numerous photos and reproductions of paintings that fill the book show a world filled with an astonishing beauty rarely seen in our modern world. --Jill Lightner

                          Book Description

The MacDowell Colony has nurtured some of the nation's most influential talents in the creative arts, from Edward Arlington Robinson and Thornton Wilder to Leonard Bernstein, Milton Avery, and Alice Walker. Founded in 1907 in Peterborough, New Hampshire, by the pioneering composer Edward MacDowell and his wife, Marian, the MacDowell Colony soon became a catalytic element in American culture. Based on the radically simple idea that creative people work best when they have time, space, privacy, and the opportunity to interact with fellow artists, the Colony has for the past century provided individual studios as well as living accommodations to thousands of writers, visual artists, composers, filmmakers, architects, and interdisciplinary artists who have gone on to chart the course of the nation's artistic life.

Richly illustrated with original and vintage photographs, this volume includes a colorful history of the Colony, as well as insightful essays by leading cultural commentators Vartan Gregorian and Robert MacNeil. In addition, it contains pieces by former MacDowell Fellows--Pulitzer Prize-winners Michael Chabon, Paul Moravec, and the late Wendy Wasserstein--on what it means to make art in America. A Place for the Arts documents what this country and the rest of the world continue to gain from the unique support MacDowell provides to the creative process.

The book also includes contributions by Joan Acocella, Peter Cameron, Carol Diehl, Verlyn Klinkenborg, Robin Rausch, Ruth Reichl, Jean Valentine, Jacqueline Woodson, and Kevin Young.

4 out of 5 stars informative middle school text.......2003-10-11

This textbook describes New Hampshire during the colonial period, and is divided into chapters about the region's aborigines, early settlement, conflicts, the revolutionary war and statehood. Many line drawings, photographs, maps, sidebars, biographical sketches and facsimiles of historical documents are included, and the material is dense while still geared toward the interests of its target audience, such as what food was eaten, what kids' lives were like, etc.

I learned quite a bit while reading this, and will use this as a reference for regional information. The cover and binding are sturdy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Recource For New Hampshire Information.......2000-05-31

I used this book to help me with a Social Studies prodject onThe Colony of New Hampshire, and found the book very helpful. Thisbook covers all topics, including some of the government, and lots of information on the natives in this area. Fradin focuses on the natives and their culture before the English settlers came over. Even their forms of houses and how they got their food. She also gives information about when the settlers came over, and the founder of the actual colony. It tells you what the religion was like and how the church was treated and repected by colony members. This is also a good refrence on how the natives and English got along in New Hampshire, in the 1600's, what the natives helped the English with , and how the English helped the natives. It describes how the settlers grew their food, and what they grew, and others information on regular household life. All in all I found this book very helpful, and I urge others interested in Nw Hampshires founding to read it.

                              Book Description

New Hampshire's Cornish Colony illustrates this distinguished American art colony. First settled in 1885 by colleagues of America's Michelangelo, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the Cornish Colony was a retreat for sculptors, painters, writers, and musicians. They were attracted to this peaceful valley nestled in the New Hampshire hills in the shadow of Vermont's Mount Ascutney. Known as “the Athens of America,” the Cornish Colony was a lively, glamorous society during its heyday from 1885 to 1925. One outstanding member, the famous artist Maxfield Parrish, was called a “chickadee” because he spent the entire year in Cornish, not merely the summer. In New Hampshire's Cornish Colony, discover a portrait of the colonists' society and the fascinating people who contributed to America's cultural legacy.

In the late nineteenth century, an American cultural center that arose in New Hampshire Village became known as the Cornish Colony. A summer retreat of the famous sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens, the Colony became the center of an American renaissance that lured notables in the arts, literature, music, and theatre such as Maxfield Parish, Paul Manship, Witter Bynner, Walter Damrosch, Isadora Duncan, Marie Dressler -- and even President Woodrow Wilson. From the 1880s to the 1920s, the Colony comprised an elite center of cultural communication but in the remainder of the twentieth century it was largely ignored by cultural historians. Fortunately, especially for lovers of the arts and history who live far from New England, Fern Meyers and James Atkinson have collected a stunning set of photographs that evoke the ambiance of a community of artists inspired by a setting in the high hills alongside the broad Connecticut River. Their detailed comments encapsulate the history and ethnography of the Colony with an intimate view of residents' personalities and activities at work and play. Men and women artists are given equal time, and even children get a share in the description of their pageants and plays, one of them directed by Ethel Barrymore. A delightful collection of photographs depicts a remarkable group of talented individuals and families in "the Gilded Age" of American culture. Highly recommended for cultural historians, critics, and all lovers of the arts.

We have long needed this book. Historically, most texts have either concentrated on describing the natural history of venomous organisms or the medical implactions of envemonations (a noteable exception is the excellent contributions by Halstead). This book provides a great deal of biological informtion about toxic marine organisms and then combines this with the latest information about medical treatments for envenomations. In addition, this book also contains an excellent reveiw and classification for cnidae, which I have personally been looking for for a while. I honestly can't say enough about this text. Although this book is not really for the layman (you won't find much in the way of popularized accounts of injuries), it is an EXCELLENT text for specialists.

                                            Book Description

Aristophanes, one of the world's greatest comic dramatists, has been admired since antiquity for his iridescent wit and beguiling fantasy, exuberant language, and brilliant satire of the social, intellectual, and political life of Athens at its height. This is the fourth and final volume in the new Loeb Classical Library edition of his plays.

Frogs was produced in 405 BCE, shortly after the deaths of Sophocles and Euripides. Dionysus, the patron god of theater, journeys to the underworld to retrieve Euripides. There he is recruited to judge a contest between the traditional Aeschylus and the modern Euripides, a contest that yields both sparkling comedy and insight on ancient literary taste. In Assemblywomen Athenian women plot to save Athens from male misgovernance. They transfer power to themselves and institute a new social order in which all inequalities based on wealth, age, and beauty are eliminated—with raucously comical results. The gentle humor and straightforward morality of Wealth made it the most popular of Aristophanes' plays from classical times to the Renaissance. Here the god Wealth is cured of his blindness; his newfound ability to distinguish good people from bad brings playfully portrayed social consequences.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent translation of Aristophanes' finest works.......2004-07-30

This book, the fourth in Dr. Henderson's fine series of parallel translations, is perhaps the best of the series, containing as it does the comic masterpiece "Frogs," in my opinion the finest of Aristophanes' works. Henderson's translations are crisp, clear, and hilarious, and his extensive use of vulgarity is always textually and philologically sound (as a few comparisons of Liddell-Scott and the OED will surely reveal). In short, it is the definitive edition of Aristophanes' works, and the only translation accurate enough to be worth having on your bookshelf (and believe me, I've read quite a few).
