This book is a neccesity for anyone looking for fantastic wild flower sites within driving distance of the D.C./Baltimore area. It is co-written by Chris Fleming, field botanist with the Maryland Natural Heritage Program and popular teacher of Wild Flower I.D. at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, MD. Each site is described by the wildflowers you can expect to see in every season and directions are given as well as any info needed about gaining access to the site. Learn where to see one of the largest stands of Giant-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) you will ever see or visit the only known site in Maryland to observe the beautiful Fringed Gentian (Gentiana crinita). Book Description
Consisting of 70 short stories, the book includes everything from bizarre inflight incidents to the monumental changes taking place in the airline industry today. This hilarious and entertaining book is the ideal companion for anyone flying or waiting for those inevitable long airport delays!
Customer Reviews:
What a hoot!!.......2005-04-07
I loved this book!!! Everything from the human touch to the odd sense of humor. Great job and I can honestly recommend it to anyone looking for an insiders look at flying or a good chuckle to accompany you through your trip. A- rating and that is high in my books.
Cute but No Cigar.......2005-04-05
I'm reluctant to be too negative about this book because the author seems like a very nice guy.
Frankly, "The Plane Truth" just didn't do it for me. There are way too many cliches ("don't judge a book by its cover," "never assume anything," "tomorrow is always a new day" and "C'est la vie.") and REALLY bad puns (smelly feet = "you've got way too much sole"; flatulence = "to air is human"; an analogy comparing the airline industry with a paint selling business ends with "If the big carriers don't catch on it would make the world of paint...thinner" and using his pseudonym "Frank" in too many situations as in "be Frank" and "a few Frank tips").
I read the book on a flight from DC to Egypt and really wanted to like it and, better yet, to get a good laugh out of it. I did appreciate the insider stories but too many of them didn't have anything to do with the airline industry. There's a chapter on the author's stock picking strategy, one on his roommates in London, two flight attendants who take off to surf around the world, his wife's hair salon, a weekend in a Las Vegas suite with two hardcore gamblers, his book collection (again with the advice to never judge a book by its cover), one on his bout of anal itching and even one on his grandfather's retirement strategy.
There's too much advice on mundane things such as how to get through security faster, how to maintain personal hygiene on long flights, how to live life (to the fullest), why not to have racy photos on your camera, why old people can be fun, too and why we, the flying public, shouldn't really know why a flight is delayed.
I didn't read the author's first book. Maybe it was better. I get the feeling he should have stopped at one. It doesn't look like there was enough material for Number Two. The chapters are very short!
The bottom line is, take the author's advice. Pick this book up if you find it on an airplane. It's good for a chuckle or two but not the asking price.
A hilarious guide offering no end of laughter.......2004-04-05
The Plane Truth is the sequel to the popular Air Traveler's Survival Guide and provides a blend of entertainment and insight into air travel. Blend stories of outrageous things happening in the cockpit and stewardess side jobs to airline bankruptcies and you have an unusually hilarious guide offering no end of laughter.
Frank And Fun.......2004-03-08
Great air travel book. It was a fun and frankly honest look at the adventures and misadventures of the inflight life. I loved it and it passed the time on what would have been an ordinary business trip. I look at air travel in a different light now, humorous.
A Surprise Air Travel Gem.......2003-12-31
I got this book as a christmas gift and just couldn't put it down. I fly for American Airlines and thought that I would be very critical. I liked Plane Insanity but absolutely loved this one. I had heard of A Frank Steward from the newspapers but now want more. I have recently ordered his first one The Air Traveler's Survival Guide and will post my review after I am done.
This book is a humorous look at the antics of flying for a living, combined with the reality at what actually goes on at 35000 feet.
The author touches briefly on the emotions of airline employess regarding 9-11, but doesn't dwell on it. It was something that had to be mentioned.
I agree with Frank, let's bring a little humor back to an area that has seen better days. Shift Happens, why not laugh at it.
My rating is 5 stars for a surprise gem of a read.

Book Description
Trees hold a powerful place in American constructions of what is good in nature and the environment. As we attempt to cope with environmental crises, trees are increasingly enlisted with great fervor as agents of our stewardship over nature. In this innovative and impassioned book, Shaul E. Cohen exposes the way that environmental stewardship is undermined through the manipulation of trees and the people who plant them by a partnership of big business, the government, and tree-planting groups. He reveals how positive associations and symbols that have been invested in trees are exploited by an interlocking network of government agencies, private timber companies, and nongovernmental organizations to subvert the power of people who think that they are building a better world.
Planting Nature details the history of tree planting in the United States and the rise of popular sentiment around trees, including the development of the Arbor Day holiday and tree-planting groups such as the National Arbor Day Foundation and American Forests. Drawing from internal papers, government publications, advertisements, and archival documents, Cohen illustrates how organizations promote tree planting as a way of shifting attention away from the causes of environmental problems to their symptoms, masking business-as-usual agendas. Ultimately, Planting Nature challenges the relationships between a "green" public, the organizations that promote their causes, and the "powers that be," providing a cautionary tale of cooperation and deception that cuts across the political spectrum.
Customer Reviews:
Planting Trees is Not Enough.......2005-05-02
In this thoughtful, well documneted book, Dr. Cohen points out that Americans have for a long time been aware of the damage we are doing to our environment. And for a long time tree planting has been viewed as a method of combating environmental degredation. But too often we treat tree planting as a panacea, though tree planting is not really the cure-all it is often made out to be. Dr. Cohen takes a critical view of such wholesome institutions as Arbor Day and the Global Releaf effort, but this is not out of a belief that planting trees is bad, but out of concern that by engaging in such activities people will not believe that there is more that needs to be done. This is a book that would read well with "Making Peace with the Planet" by Barry Commoner.

Book Description
In studying the dynamics of populations, whether of animals, plants or cells, it is crucial to allow for intrinsic delays, due to such things as gestation, maturation or transport. This book is concerned with one of the fundamental questions in the analysis of the effect of delays, namely determining whether they effect the stability of steady states. The analysis is presented for one or two such delays treated both as discrete, where an event which occurred at a precise time in the past has an effect now, and distributed, where the delay is averaged over the population’s history. Both of these types occur in biological contexts. The method used to tackle these questions is linear stability analysis which leads to an understanding of the local stability. By avoiding global questions, the author has kept the mathematical prerequisites to a minimum, essentially advanced calculus and ordinary differential equations.

Book Description
Here, in a single volume, are four major plays by the first modern playwright, Henrick Ibsen. Ghosts -the startling portrayal of a family destroyed by disease and infidelity. The Wild Duck -- A poignant drama of lost illusions. An Enemy Of The People -- Ibsen's vigorous attack on public opinion. And A Doll's House -- the play that scandalized the Victorian world with its unsparing views of love and marriage, featuring one of the most controversial heroines -- and one of the most famous exists -- in the literature of the stage.
Customer Reviews:
Four Ibsen plays constituting a marvelous case study.......2001-05-22
Henrik Ibsen's creation of "modern theater" makes him one of the most influential playwrights, along with William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, in the history of drama. This unique collection of the four plays he wrote between 1879 and 1884 provides teachers of drama/literature with an opportunity to look at a major writer trying to develop his craft. Ibsen is concerned with social criticism and each of these plays reflects his change in perspective as he tries to write a drama that will be both socially relevant and commercially successful. You have to remember the time and place that considered it shocking for Nora to leave her husband or for Mrs. Alving to consider euthenasia for her son. By turning to "comedy" (of a sort) in "An Enemy of the People," Ibsen found a way of making his point in a manner more acceptable to his audiences. By looking at not only the plays but how each was received by the public, teachers/students can better appreciate what Ibsen was trying to do with each successive play.
For all four of these plays the notion of responsibility is primary. In "A Doll's House" Nora Helmer decides to leave her husband because he is unworthy of her love. In "Ghosts," Mrs. Alving has to decide whether she should give her diseased son poison as a mercy killing. In "An Enemy of the People," Dr. Stockmann decides to stay and fight to have the infected baths repaired even after the town ostracizes him. Finally, in "The Wild Duck" the idealist Gregers Werle comes home and destroys a family by insisting the truth be told. A classroom set of this particular volume is relatively inexpensive and provides an excellent case study of the growth of a major writer. Students do not often get the opportunity to read several works by the same writer. Shakespeare is the exception to this rule, but usually students are exposed to different types of plays (comedy, tragedy, history) rather than to a series of consecutively written plays.
realism in dramatic literature.......2000-05-01
henrik ibsen has perfected the realist movement in theatre. he has accomplished what so few have: to maintain the realistic effect, without succumbing to the tediousness of every day life. his plays ring true for the common man, yet not in a pedestrian manner that becomes boring. in my opinion, he far surpasses any other playwright in the realist movement, including chekhov.
Realism.......1999-05-25
So much in reading Ibsen depends upon the translation of these great works. These four plays of Ibsen's so-called "realistic period" revolve around social issues of his day which plague us 100 years later. Do we ever learn from such literary wake-up calls? Although the dramatic tensions here, which could have easily have been 20th Century tensions, rumble through these plays, the translations here are wordy and dated, thus making the plays sound overly melodramatic and at times downright silly. Still, everyone should read -- and discuss -- Ibsen's plays for their uneasy questions regarding universal social problems: money, privacy, freedom to act, government corruption, unchecked journalism, and the moral and physical diseases which only seem to wear a new face each year.

Customer Reviews:
Good Read.......2007-03-05
This was a pretty good book. I had to read it for my Approaches to Literature class, but actually found in easy and understandable.
Ibsen is Still Relevant.......2006-02-25
It is at least 50 years since I read these plays, but I have seen them performed during these years. I suggested "A Doll's House" to my book group because I believed that, though the play was written over 100 years ago, the subject matter would still be relevant. I was right. The women were so intrigued with the material, as well as the writing, that many of them went on to read the rest of the plays in the collection. The notes relating to the plays add to the interest and are enlightening.
