High-Five!.......2007-09-13

Some of these photographs are hilarious. For example, there's the titular photo of two hares apparently high-fiving each other in the snow. A black-and-white photo informs us that the exit to "Boring" can be found one mile down the road. A confused eagle stares down at a wooden woodpecker, and another predatory bird is about to make off with a poor, defenseless stuffed bunny toy. Many of the more entertaining photos just have to be seen to be believed; these are the kind of moments I imagine many photographers live to capture.

Other photos are quite magical in nature. Some trick of perspective (or just a bit of luck in catching someone at exactly the right moment) shows a person apparently in arms-spread flight. A car in a wildlife preserve is surrounded by relaxed lions. A man in Nevada appears to stand on the moon while one in California apparently jumps over it.

Sometimes you need to look carefully to catch the daredevils at work, because they aren't always found in expected places. The first time I looked at one photograph I missed the bicyclist riding vertically along the wall. Of course, there's the woman doing a flip out of a white water raft in the middle of the rapids. You might almost imagine it was deliberate, if not for the other bits of detritus flying out with her (hope someone managed to retrieve that wallet!).

This is a delightful book. Every other page you'll find yourself turning to a friend or family member and urging them to look at a new and illuminating image. From the wacky to the wondrous, there's something in here for everyone. Not only do these photos show us the moments we might never be lucky enough to see ourselves, but they also remind us to look at the world around us in new ways. After all, many of the mysteries in these photos are a product of the photographer's perspective, and that's incredibly inspirational.

Great photography book..........2007-01-09

This is a great photography book for the whole family. I originally bought this for myself, since I always enjoyed these photos at the back of the magazine, but it turns out that my two girls, ages 2 and 5 both love it as well. Fun reading, discussion of what's really going on in the pictures, and great wildlife pictures.

This book aims to answer the questions most often raised about Armillaria. Members of this genus include some of the most virulent pathogens which kill and decay trees, shrubs and vines. One of the most virulent is Armillaria mellea, the honey fungus, which causes serious root and butt rots in woody plants. Starchy-rooted plants, including some valuable herbaceous plants, and several weeds can also be killed.

Armillaria mellea is reputed to be by far the most serious plant disease in British gardens. This, and related species, are common in forests, orchards and gardens throughout the world. At the same time, the genus attracts worldwide interest in their highly evolved biological adaptations, potential pharmaceutical properties and, not least, culinary qualities.

Generations of mycologists first thought that only one major species, Armillaria mellea, existed, but this has now been divided into at least six species in Britain. There are known to be many other species worldwide, in temperate Africa, the Americas, Australasia and other parts of the tropics. In temperate Eurasia three species are known to be serious pathogens.

Diagnosis is difficult as not only do the fruiting bodies differ subtly in morphology between species, but they also often differ between genets within one species. However, tests have now been developed using molecular techniques and these diagnoses can be done within hours. The physical methods recommended to control the fungus, once established, are extremely laborious, and mostly impractical, but any control technique will only work best at the earliest stages of infection, making accurate diagnosis vital.

This book is of interest to horticultural growers, gardeners, arboriculturalists, foresters, and plant pathologists, for whom Armillaria represents the ultimate fungal foe but, like many adversaries, it should also elicit admiration, albeit grudgingly, as a supreme plant pathogen.

I took out 5 other NYC books from my local library and of all the books, I found this one of the most helpful. Easy to find the information and informative ideas and suggestions. When you update it, change the title, please, as I think I'm going to be embarrassed walking around NYC w/it.

A Good "First Start" For Planning A Trip To NYC.......1999-01-25

Here are the pros and cons of the book after actually using it to tour New York City.

Pros:

- Very informative "tidbits" of information about New York (i.e.: New York History, Tourist Traps, Dollars and Sense, and Time Savers).

- Good information about how to pick a hotel and restaurant if you don't know where to begin.

- Good information on the mass transit system and how to get around.

- Good information on the major tourist attractions in New York (hours and days open, cost, directions, etc.).

- Helpful planning sheets if you can't figure out what you want to see first.

Cons:

- The size of the book is too big to fit easliy into a jacket pocket.

- The cover is fluorescent orange which screams "tourist" when you take it out in the subway.

- It focuses entirely on Manhattan. If you are staying outside of Manhattan the maps don't provide enough detail to show you how to get from outside of the city to the city itself.

Overall a good first start for planning a trip to New York City. It provides the basic information of where to stay, where to eat, and how to get around in Manhattan.

I recommend a more detailed travel guide (Michelin Green City Guide comes to mind) to accompany this book once you are in the city and start walking around or when you want to visit outside of Manhattan.

My 7 year old really liked this, and more generally this whole Landmark series is very good for young readers. Vocabulary and sentence structure are age appropriate. Content is good solid history. As opposed to much of the stuff for this age which is "silly" reading, this series lets them learn something while improving their reading skills.

A Great Read for Kids!.......2000-06-21

I discovered this book while browsing for quality literature to bring to my classroom. I read this book because it fits my third grade curriculum and has a low reading level. Meet Christopher Columbus is an excellent introduction to biographies and explorers. The format of the book allows for less experienced readers to read small parts of his life without being overwhelmed. The language is simple enough for children to comprehend the main idea and details presented without difficulty. The history is accurate and presented in a logical fashion. I recommend this to parents and teachers to help students learn about Columbus as well as improve their reading!

Modelling the genesis and propagation of electrical activity in the heart in quantitative terms is one of the most important recent applications of mathematical modelling in biology. I don't think any other text covers this information so completely; although it is notoriously hard to come by in your average book store. Any edition of it would be excellent.

All the existing books in Infinite Dimensional Complex Analysis focus on the problems of locally convex spaces. However, the theory without convexity condition is covered for the first time in this book. This shows that we are really working with a new, important and interesting field.

Theory of functions and nonlinear analysis problems are widespread in the mathematical modeling of real world systems in a very broad range of applications. During the past three decades many new results from the author have helped to solve multiextreme problems arising from important situations, non-convex and non linear cases, in function theory.

Not bedtime reading........2000-08-18

Edgeworth wrote about the protestant upper class in Ireland around the turn of the 18th/19th century. At the time, especially in Rackrent, her most famous work, she wrote of the machinations of bad landlords and how their families died out. It is interesting that she was writing about the demise of these bad landlords, suggesting that things had improved in this more enlightened age, at a time when the Irish Peasant was worse off than ever. Edgeworth wrote of a society that was on the brink of extinction, but she was not aware of this, since she was part of that society. This book is noteworthy for what it is not. It is not Irish literature. It is poor british literature and would have no merit at all if it did not serve to contrast with the high quality scribblings of the uneducated and unwashed downtrodden masses. Like the protestant ruling class it is sparse, stilted and haughty. Not a fun read.
