Book Description

First published in 1893, W.H. Hudson's IDLE DAYS IN PATAGONIA is the narrative of his life's great adventure-- a year in Patagonia. His time there climaxed 30 years as a naturalist, riding and roving in his native Argentina.

His visit to this remote country fulfilled not only a private dream, but also a scientific mission. His collection of bird skins together with a brilliant report to the Zoological Society of London more than a century ago added greatly to his prestige as an ornithologist.

In IDLE DAYS IN PATAGONIA, Hudson's scientific interests harmonize perfectly with his extraordinary narrative and descriptive power. Its acute observation of nature and man, and its evocation of remote places and strange peoples mark him as a writer of keenness and distinction.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very beautiful rather than profound.......2001-02-23

This is a tranquil, contemplative work of reflection on the varieties of nature. Like the amazing bird that changes its song regularly when one of its species, for reasons unkown, 'decides' to create a new melody which the others then follow. Another thing to look out for is the sensation that Hudson's glasses has on the local indigenous population - mocking laughter turns to incredulous amazement. This book brought peace to my life, and hopefully increased my sensitivity to natural wonders all around me - everyday ones as well as the extraordinary.

Rick Steves fans know what you are getting. For the uninitiated, his travel philosophy is to travel better by traveling cheaper and closer to the people. If your idea of a dream vacation is sleeping on the eighth floor of a high-rise hotel for a fortune every night, this is the wrong book for you. If your idea of wonderful is to sleep in an exquisite four-poster bed at a Scottish B&B owned by a pleasant old lady who will talk to you for hours, all for [amt.] a night -- buy this book. Steves has three big strengths, which are all at work in this book: The most important, by far, is the accomodations. Steves consistently finds amazingly good buys among centrally located B&Bs with friendly owners. The only problem is that everybody knows this, so getting a room on short notice in the summer at one of his spots can be dicey. The second big strength is the practical guides to sights, which include lots of interesting little details that you won't find elsewhere while telling you in no-uncertain terms which sights are must sees and which ones you should skip. Over time, his picks may not always coincide with yours -- but I almost always found his stuff on-target. The third big-strength is Steves' travel philosophy, which is especially helpful to first-time travelers (or those venturing away from the Hilton for the first time). I highly recommend that you also check out Europe Through the Back Door, Steves' classic magnum opus, now in its 19th Edition.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, easy, and funny!.......2001-08-22

I planned a trip to England and Ireland using Rick Steve's books (last year's edition and this year's edition) and the Lonely planet books. The combination was great. Rick Steve gives you a very up to date selection of places to stay, things to do and the prices you'll pay. He also included lots of internet addresses. I organized the whole trip over the web with no travel experience! I had to use the old edition to start planning because the new one wasn't available at the time I started planning. I invested in the second updated version a month before leaving and some things had changed! This guide wasn't as comprehensive as the others, but it was full of good usable information. I wouldn't even try traveling overseas again without one of his guides.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Must for First-time Travelers to England.......2001-07-25

My family and I used this book extensively in our 3-week trip to England. Rick's suggestions for lodging are especially apt -- we used them in York, the Lake District (Ellas Crags B&B is superb!) and in Bath. I suggest that you team this up with Bill Bryson's irreverant "Notes from a Small Island" (read it before you go), for a wonderful look at the best of England. Rick has good ideas about where to spend time, and what's not worth waiting in line for. At Rick's suggestion, long before our trip, we sent ahead for tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London, and it was one of the most memorable activities on our trip. We also recommend starting your trip in London with an audio tour of Westminster Cathedral -- for a quick history lesson on both London and Great Britain. One note of caution: Rick sometimes underestimates how much time you'll need at different sites -- for example, the changing of the guards takes many hours, even doing it "through the back door" as he advises. Also, if visitors are like us, you will likely want to schedule more time for the art museums, especially the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate British, and the Victoria & Albert.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Helper and Sidekick.......2001-06-28

I just returned from two weeks in the UK: visiting London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Cotswolds, York, and South Wales. This book has excellent coverage of London, York and the Cotswolds -- with just a bit about Stratford and nothing on South Wales (although it has a whole chapter on North Wales).

The book had almost everything we needed for the places that it covered. Great advice for London -- seeing all the right places, getting acclimated on your first day by walking down by Big Ben and Westminster Bridge, using the tube and the buses, etc. We took the recommendation for the Lime Tree Hotel in London, for example, and found it quite good for us. The featured area around Victoria Station turned out to be an ideal area as a base for London sightseeing.

We probably wouldn't have visited York if we hadn't read the chapter on York in the book. Similarly, the Cotswolds information was very helpful. He's not a fan of Stratford but I think he's overly negative about it.

I didn't find the restaurant recommendations very helpful (except for the one for Caffe Concerto in York -- which is a great place for lunch!). I think it's tough to provide good restaurant recommendations in a guidebook -- better to ask at the hotel or TIC when you get there as they can provide more current and personal recommendations on places to eat.

I took a couple of other guidebooks along -- but this one was in my backpack all the time while the others remained in my suitcase. The others just weren't as helpful or useful. It's the difference between just getting the facts about a place vs. what this book gives you: advice and recommendations. Next time, those other guidebooks will just stay home!

                        Book Description

Caddisflies constitute the insect order Trichoptera in which some 10,000 species are known in the world, including about 1400 in North America. Fossil evidence shows that caddisflies originated in the Triassic period, 200-250 million years ago. They are important links in the movement of energy and nutrients through freshwater ecosystems due largely to the extraordinary diversification in their larval architecture, which includes portable and stationary shelters, silken filter nets, and osmotically semipermeable cocoons. Glenn Wiggins's Caddisflies is the foremost comprehensive reference source about these insects and is concerned with behavioural ecology, evolutionary history, biogeography, and biological diversity.

Wiggins outlines fundamental concepts of aquatic ecology, illuminating the ways in which caddisflies help to make fresh waters work. Essential features of morphology, biology, and distribution are outlined for the twenty-six North American families of caddisflies and illustrated diagnostic keys are provided for larvae, pupae, and adults. The author also brings together information on caddisflies from widely scattered sources and provides comprehensive coverage of the scientific literature.

In the past two decades, breakthroughs in computer technology have made a tremendous impact on optimization. In particular, availability of parallel computers has created substantial interest in exploring the use of parallel processing for solving discrete and global optimization problems. The chapters in this volume cover a broad spectrum of recent research in parallel processing of discrete and related problems. The topics discussed include distributed branch-and-bound algorithms, parallel genetic algorithms for large scale discrete problems, simulated annealing, parallel branch-and-bound search under limited-memory constraints, parallelization of greedy randomized adaptive search procedures, parallel optical models of computing, randomized parallel algorithms, general techniques for the design of parallel discrete algorithms, parallel algorithms for the solution of quadratic assignment and satisfiability problems. The book will be a valuable source of information to faculty, students and researchers in combinatorial optimization and related areas.

In the turbulent spring of 1951, central Florida became notoriously linked to a vicious series of Ku Klux Klan activities. The racial, religious, and political mix that populated Reesa McMahon's childhood hometown of Mayflower that same year was, as her Northern-born father remarked, "the social equivalent of a Molotov cocktail." The upheaval her family experiences in the coming-of-age novel Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands by Susan Carol McCarthy--which is based on actual events from her own life--abruptly ends Reesa's girlish sense of security. When her friend Marvin Cully, a black orange-picker who works for her father, is killed by the local Opalakee Klan, she realizes how much her liberal family stands out in opposition to the men with white sheets and guns who, unmasked, served as the pillars of the local community. While making sense of Marvin's death and slowly realizing the extent to which her fellow townsfolk brandish their racist attitudes, Reesa watches her own house become the unofficial center of the resistance. The author notes her arguably sensible reasons for fictionalizing her accounts, but the resulting story doesn't move beyond the confines of a young girl's mind. --Emily Russin

                                Book Description

Here is one of those rare and remarkable debuts that herald the appearance of a major new talent on the literary scene. Inspired by real events, Lay That Trumpet In Our Hands is a wise and luminous story about a northern family, a southern town, and the senseless murder that sparks an extraordinary act of courage.

To this day, my family is in disagreement as to precisely when the nightmare began. For me, it was the morning Daddy and Luther discovered Marvin, beaten, shot, and dying, in the Klan’s stomping grounds off Round Lake Road. My brother Ren disagrees. He points to the small cluster of scars that begin just outside his left eye and trail horizontally across his temple to the top of his ear. Ren claims it started when the men in white robes took the unprecedented step of shooting at two white children. Others say it was when Mr. Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP and Mr. Hoover’s FBI came to town. Mother and Daddy shake their heads. In their minds, the real beginning was much earlier....

Whether you loved, hated, or somewhat like To Kill a Mockingbird, its guaranteed you'll love this book. I had to read this book for an advanced Engish class and I dreaded reading this book, but after reading a couple of pages, my whole mind changed. If totally recommend this book to everyone, from the mature reader to the less developed reader. Great piece of literature.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Novel.......2007-02-12

This is an excellent novel which I greatly enjoyed. It describes, from the viewpoint of a young girl, the experiences of a family in the fight against racism in Florida in the 1950s. The most striking aspect of this is the description of living in a society whose basic assumptions are different to one's own. Most of us have experienced people making off-color/racist/sexist comments in our presence (although nowhere near as overt nor as excessive as those expressed by some of the characters in the book). It is interesting to see how this family copes and compare their reaction with one's own and imagine how one would cope in the same situation.

The book is well written and is easy to read. The characters are well defined and the story beautifully paced.

I would recommend this book to teenage as well as adult readers.

I loved this book. Ms. McCarthy writes simply and beautifully. I was raised in Central Florida and could recall some of the events mentioned in the book. What I loved the most about the book was the relationships, the use of poetry and bible scriptures. I think this book is a 'must read'.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to use to bridge to a classic!.......2005-08-30

"Lay that Trumpet in Our Hands" has been compared to "To Kill a Mockingbird", and I think the comparison is warranted. With a young, spunky girl as the narrator, troubled racial events taking place, and the relationships between people at its heart, using this book to bridge to the denser classic novel will help kids make the transition. I'm planning to use it with my 8th grade students; I might question using it with younger students.

It isn't only a great book for teaching purposes, though! Pick it up and prepare to connect with the characters and become immersed in the story.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing story of faith, family and the Civil Rights movement.......2005-05-04

Susan Carol McCarthy tells an amazing story of family, friendship and personal strength through the eyes of a young girl, Reesa, living in central Florida in the 1950's.
Two families become entwined when the KKK intimidates, stalks and randomly murders a young man, Marvin Cully, because he is black. The young man's death is a turning point for Reesa McMahon because the ugly world of racism is unveiled before her young eyes. Marvin Cully's family and Reesa's families are friends, and Marvin's death draws them even closer. Reesa's parents must make decisions to do what is right, even at the risk of endangering their own family.
The early Civil Rights movement is explored, with the founder Harry T. Moore joining the McMahon's and the Cully's in trying to expose and bring to justice those responsible for Marvin's murder. This opens the window on the KKK and more violence and terror is unleashed.
This is a story that is both beautiful and heart-wrenching. It is a story about friends, faith and families that make definitive choices to do the right thing. It is also about innocence lost when wrong and right collide, leaving moral courage stamped in fire upon a young girl's soul.
I met the author at a book event in Tampa. She spoke about the historical accuracy of her book and told of her decision to write this book based on her father's actions in that time. Also at this event was Evangeline Moore, the daughter of Harry Moore, and she told of her view of events of the time and of her parents violent murder.
This is an amazing book that is an honest and insightful view into the thoughts and lives of those in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement and a foresight of changes that were to come.
