Book Description
Where Vacations Meet Adventures! First, Hidden Maui reviews the destination’s famed attractions. Then (more importantly!) it invites the reader to go further to “Hidden” spots other guides overlook, including small inns and local restaurants. The guide also focuses on outdoor adventures with detailed information on beaches, parks and outdoor activities. Special traveler-friendly features include hidden spots, author’s favorite picks, getaway itineraries, driving and walking tours, websites and e-mail addresses, and multiple scaled maps that zoom in on each area. Hidden Maui leads to sacred sites on Lanai, historic spots in Lahaina, and cool waterfalls along the Hana Highway. The author offers recommendations and opinionated reviews for over 110 restaurants and over 80 hotels. This updated edition includes 20 maps.

A good place to start.......2006-08-08
When you know you're going to Maui, this is a much better option than a book that addresses all the islands at once, like its sister book, Hidden Hawaii.
There's a lot of information in here, although some of it I could have done without; if I wanted information about the culture, flora & fauna, geology, history and language, I would get a book about those things. This is supposed to be a vacation guidebook. That other stuff is extraneous, to my mind, and doesn't belong in this book.
I did find that the "hidden" places they listed were ones I had not heard of in many other places. I don't know that much of anything is actually "hidden" out there any more; it's been developed so much in the last 30 years, you won't find many places that are really and truly unknown to at least some of the tourist traffic, especially if it's published in a book that will be read by thousands of vacationers. So, taking that into consideration, I guess the book lived up to its promise there, somewhat.
I could have used some photos. There were none. But the maps were pretty good.
I got a copy of this from the library for our trip to Maui in a couple of months; I may purchase this one to take along, as I found it more user-friendly and overall more useful than many other books I checked out.
A great guide.......2006-02-14
I am not sure why the previous reviewers gave so much flak to the author for this book, because it really is an excellent guide to the island. Most people like to compare each guide for Maui to the Wizard book, but if you consider the relationship between that "other" book and the locals, then Hidden Maui by far comes out on top.
A nice guide for the island, one I'd recommend along with Maui Mile by mile and Driving Maui.
Wrong title for this book.......2005-05-18
It should be titled "Things other books talk about when describing Maui". There was not much that I found new in this book that I have not read in other Maui tour books. It had some decent descriptions and pictures, but not much more then that. I was looking for some real "hidden" places and finds, but was really disappointed.
Very Ordinary Travel Guide.......2005-01-04
Despite the title, there's nothing especially "hidden" in this book. It is a tolerably-good guide to Maui, but nothing special. Most everything in it can be found in any decent guide to the island.

Not horrible, but get the island-specific version instead.......2006-08-08
This book was all right. The intro general-info pages are really detailed (info for traveling with kids, international visitors, senior travelers, transportation options, etc.). However, there are scant few photos -- just a couple of pages' worth stuck in the middle, and they're more landscape-oriented than tourism-oriented, so they really aren't relevant to a guidebook.
There's some good information in there, but if you know what island you're going to already, then get a book about that particular island; otherwise you have to wade through a bunch of stuff that isn't relevant to your trip. For instance, I found the Hidden Maui guidebook to be much more helpful for the trip we'll be taking.
Frequently generic, omits any mass transit information for Oahu.......2005-09-21
I recently checked out this book (among others) from the local library prior to a trip to Oahu. For my trip, I was disappointed by this book, and found this to be one of the less-useful ones.
First, this book was largely useless because the author omitted almost any information about accessing different tourist sites through Hawaii's tourist-packed mass transit system, The Bus. Most tourists I met relied on mass transit and tour buses. What good is a guidebook if you don't know how (or whether) you can get to the things the author mentions?
Secondly, the author frequently lacks discernment and context in his suggestions. For example, the Waikiki Shopping Plaza is listed as offering "about a dozen [budget] ethnic and American restaurants", without context. When I visited, I discovered the usual set of food court fry pits that could be found in any American shopping mall. Why would anyone interested in "Hidden Hawaii" be interested in these?
Needless to say, I rapidly tossed this book in my hotel room, and carried around the Rough Guide around. Thud.

Book Description
Forget Polynesian paralysis! This expanded, updated edition of Hidden Maui offers so many new opportunities for adventure that readers will jump out of those poolside lounges, grab their gear, and head out looking for excitement.
Noted Hawaii travel expert Ray Riegert shows the way to every inch of the Valley Isle's 120 miles of shoreline. He points out beaches where the sand is white, black, salt-and-pepper, green, even garnet. Then Hidden Maui plunges into the waves - describing the best way to enjoy the island's great watersports, from sea kayaking to whale watching. Land adventures are covered in just as much detail, including biking trips down Haleakala volcano, hikes through the bird-rich Kanaha Pond wildlife sanctuary and spelunking journeys through ancient volcanic caves and over frozen lava waterfalls near Hana.
Hidden Maui reveals unique lodging and dining options too, including the quaint wooden Nona Lani cottages and the old-style bamboo-deco Kihata restaurant, where local Paia residents enjoy budget-priced Japanese food. The author also devotes separate chapters to the lesser-known Maui County islands of Molokai and Lanai.
Customer Reviews:
OK book but not great.......2001-02-27
DO NOT use this book to find hotels or restaurants. It does have good beaches and things to do. As far as the hotels and restaurants it seems like they just took the promotion materials and re-printed them without actually trying the places for themselves.
Hidden Maui.......2000-07-26
I bought this book expecting to find areas and sites that were not included in other guide books. I have yet to find any such places in the book. The title is very misleading. I found the books descriptions to be very bland and somewhat incomplete. Mr. Riegert would do well to review the guidebooks of Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman before writing another book.
First time Maui vacationer.......2000-03-25
This is not the best book on Maui. Most of the information on "hidden" places is not as "hidden" as the book would lead you to believe. It is available elsewhere (Frommers, Fodors, Snorkel Maui.) This guide is not easy to use, and doesn't have the nice pictures other books have. We bought 5 books before we went to Maui, and we brought three with us. This was not one of them because we got all of the same information in the other books or on-line.
hidden maui leaves maui still hidden.......1999-10-19
I found this book almost worthless. The book pointed us to who we should pay to take us snorkeling or on hikes rather than let us know where to go. I also thought the book was poorly organized. I definitely would not recommend this book. I received more useful information off a free map of maui obtained from an information booth at the beach.
You must read this book if you are going to Maui........1998-10-13
This book is a must for the first time visitor to the island of Maui as well as those who return again and again to bask on her beautiful beaches and take in all the magnificent scenery. This book accompanied us on all our daily jaunts: the 10, 000 foot ascent to Haleakala Crater as well as a busy Saturday night checking out all the stores in Lahaina. Chapter 8's descriptions of various points of interest along the Hana Highway is invaluable as a guide to making the most of this winding, picturesque stretch of road. I found myself regularly referring to the dining and shopping choices listed for the various towns and found most of the descriptions very accurate. I have visited Maui several times before my most recent trip in September and I wish I had purchased this book a long time ago. If you buy only one guide to assist you in your travels on beautiful Maui, it should be this one.

Excellent Bedtime Book!.......2000-04-25
Reading has always been an important aspect of life for me. So when my son was born, I decided that I would share this love of mine with him. Though he was only two months old, I bought this book and began to read to him every night before putting him to bed. Now, only 4 short months later, it is his, as well as my own, favorite ritual. The stories are simple and straight foward, and include wonderful illustrations that my young son loves to look at. Each story is also one I remember from my own childhood, and reading them again makes me remember my mother reading to me as a child. I know that this book will bring many years of joy and will seal a bond between my son and me for life. My Big Book of Bedtime Stories will be handed down to my son when he has his own children, so they can cherish the stories and time together as I have.

Finding Ways To Balance Good Desires So They Can Co-exist.......2006-10-24
I give this book 5 stars because it did what I hoped a book like this would do: It gives the reader more ideas, history, and perspectives from which to interpret A.S. Byatt's novel "Possession." This is not a Cliff Notes. It's more like if you invited a person who was way "too" smart and "too" informed to your book club discussion. Of Byatt she says, "She has worked assiduously towards encompassing what are frequently regarded as mutually exclusive states." And this is true in so many ways. Byatt takes on ideas that most people consider contradictory and challenges those assumptions capably.
There is a "signifanct part of the work (Byatt's fiction) which is semi autobiographical." "As the main title suggests, the novel is about possession, and in line with its complex form dramatizes multiple aspects of this theme, exploring the nature of possessive love and the contrary impulse to self-preservation; superficial possession - of things - and supernatural possession by ghosts, literal and metaphorical; the quest for knowledge (intellectual possession)," and "a degree of self-possession (pride)."
Catherine Burgass examines the book's form, plot choices, and language. She gives examples of the literary criticism and reviews the book has received from major media sources and different schools of thought (old and new). The book intrinsically asks how do contemporary focuses and forms interact with the considerations of the past and future? "Part of Roland and Maud's mutual attraction is, paradoxically, a shared desire for solitude."
When A.S. Byatt was asked if she was tempted to write biographies of other people, she replied, "I do not wish to spend most of my life on somebody else's life - not one other person's life. The words came to me long before the plot of the novel, Possession, and it was to do with being taken over - or alternatively, taking somebody over, depending on whether you're a sympathiser or a hunter."
Byatt's characters are beautifully complex. Ash is sensitive to past, modern, and possible future sensibilities. So "at one point in the novel, Ash considers the way to win Christabel: 'He would teach her that she was not his possession' (p.279)" or anyone else's possession for that matter. And in the end "She and Ash remain linked in their lifetimes, poignantly through this child, whom neither of them can publicly own." The "child" in the novel could be representative of many good things they shared, their literal child, their chemistry of ongoing communication, or the things their relationship created in the real world. The novel explores how and why both characters choose to hide or silence parts of their relationship.
Love that creates consistent beauty and quality is rare. Some people think it comes only once. Some believe they can experience it in several ways, at the same or different times. Some find it in art and work as much as they find it in other people. Regardless, it is rare for most people. And the novel and the Reader's Guide explore how seemingly contradictory loves may co-exist by reconsidering perceptions, definitions, and forms.
I wrote a review of the movie before I read Ms. Burgass' Reader's Guide. My review is on Amazon if you'd like additional perspectives. If you like the movie Possession or the novel, and you'd like to consider it further, I highly recommend this book. Ms. Burgass really cared about the intelligence, complexity, and work that went into creating the novel. And her Reader's Guide may open doors to considering the story in new and valuable ways.
A. S. Byatt's POSSESSION: A Reader's Guide.......2006-02-25
This is part of the "Continuum Contemporaries" series. It is a very useful resource for teaching/learning about A. S. Byatt's novel, POSSESSION, as well as about the author and the themes/issues in the novel. My only critique is that I wish it had a compendium that listed all of the different literary allusions in the book. Even without that, though, it is a helpful resource.
valuable guide.......2003-05-14
Especially if you are in a book group that will be discussing "Possession", this is a thoughtful, comprehensive guide to that convoluted novel. It will ease the rather daunting task of taking in the nuances of A.M. Byatt's literary romance. Also included is a brief biography of Byatt. Recommended.
Covers All Aspects Including the Film.......2002-10-01
Reading A.S.Byatt's "Possession" can be a daunting task as the novel is not only interpersed with poetry and letters written by all the fictional historical characters, but is filled with allusions that only a lifetime afficiando of literature would understand. This little book by Ms Burgass will help the less erudite reader peel back the layers that comprise the entire work.
The guide is broken down into various sections that will answer questions regarding all manner of topics related to the novel. The author, the novel itself, the novel's reception, the novel's standing today, and a helpful list of study questions, further reading and websites round out the chapter topics.
I found the chapter on the novel sufficiently comprehensive to answer all my questions regarding the fictional works of Ash and LaMotte. Coverage of the novel's various themes was also extremely instructional.
I recommend this to all who enjoyed the movie and want to fully enjoy the book's entire experience.
Excellent overview.......2002-07-26
I'm the first to admit that 'Possession' is a complex novel, but it's also one of my favourites. This guidebook might seem like an odd idea (why do you need a guidebook to a novel??) - having just finished it, though, I'm left feeling even more impressed by the novel, and itching to read it again. Dr Burgass writes clearly and is deeply knowledgeable about her subject. There are so many levels to this novel, so many nuances, and she captures most of them wonderfully. This is all in the main chapter of the book. The other material seems like a bonus: a brief history of Byatt's career and a great little section about how (and why) this clever novel sold so well. It's even current enough to have a page about the film adaptation, which as far as I know has not been released yet. But it sounds intriguing. Which is probably a good reason to read this book now - then you will know more about the novel when everybody starts talking about it again.
