Customer Reviews:
LETS GO MAP GUIDE HONG KONG.......2001-06-09
If you are planning to live in Hong Kong for the next three years do not count on this map guide to help you get around. It shows only very limited, touristy portions of the SAR. I deem it a total waste of money.
More guide than map.......2000-08-23
The actual map is incomplete and presented in awkward segments, so it's not really useful as a map.

Book Description
Hong Kong is a beguiling city- high maintenance yet high reward: constantly changing, without losing touch with its heritage. It's superstitious, but scientific when it wants to be: exotic, yet familiar; a gambler, but one who always knows the odds. It's both a contradiction and a conundrum, but it's always compelling.
Customer Reviews:
Not a Guidebook.......2006-11-21
As you might have guessed, this isn't a guidebook. It can however serve as a good general guide on the sort of things to do in Hong Kong or the sort of things you might have done while there. Great images!

Book Description
This opening fold-out contains a general map of Hong Kong to help you visualize the 6 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.
Discover Hong Kong through 6 districts and 6 maps
Central/ Wan Chai
Mid-Levels/ The Peak/ Western
Tsim Sha Tsui/ Mong Kok/ Cheung Sha Wan
Tsim Sha Tsui East/ Kowloon City/ Won Tai Sin
Happy Valley/ Causeway Bay/ East Coast
Aberdeen/ Stanley/ Shek O
For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Hong Kong has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (
A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.
Transportation and hotels in Hong Kong
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.
A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

Customer Reviews:
The best out there..........2002-05-15
I bought this book before I left on a 4 month international exchange w/ my university. While there, I got to see and use the other brands of HK travel guides used by the other exchange students, including Lonely Planet. The Fodor's edition, by far, has the most detailed "key" information than any of the other guides. It's simple to use, I highly recommend it.
Great Help for Those Planning a Trip!.......2000-09-08
Hi, we are going to Hong Kong next year, and I bought this book to help me decide where to stay and pick a few highlights that I will want to plan on seeing.
This book is really, really helpful when it comes to listing hotels and restaurants according to regions of the city. There are also quite a few maps that are fairly easy to read and they have laid out the book so that you could take it along on a walking tour of Hong Kong Island or Kowloon, etc. and refer to it very easily. They also include information on public transportation i.e. buses, the subway, etc., how to get to and from the airport, etc. The book is a convenient size to put in a small backpack as well.
The only thing that I would do to improve this book is to add more pictures of some of the things described!
This book also includes lots of useful information on side trips to both Macau and Guangzhou, which are both easy day trips from Hong Kong.
Could Be One of the Best Local Guide.......2000-09-06
As a native who grew up and used to live in Hong Kong, it is always fun and entertaining to read about these wonderful and exciting accounts about the city from the eyes of foreigners.
A restless and vibrant city with more than 6.5 million inhabited on 1071 square miles, Hong Kong is the center of the Far East, dubbed "Pearl of the Orient". A tour-guide of 200 or so pages probably can't portrait the exciting lifestyles led by locals and all the fun this island has to offer.
Yet Fodor has done quite an awesome job.
In addition to the usual tidbits on "how to get there" and the A-Z guide, Fodor team really does the homework and presents the city with unusual details and point-of-interests that are not commonly known to foreigners. A city made up of the Kowloon peninsula, the Hong Kong Island (where major financial and business center locates), and 235 outer islands, one would have to explore the outlying islands, whether inhabited or not, in order to complete travel experience in Hong Kong. Fodor delivers vivid and lucid photos of the islands as well as shopping guidelines, food and drinks, and destivals and seasonal events.
There is no best time to visit in Hong Kong. You might want to avoid the summer months of hot and humid weather. A stroll around the Central District will expose you to the heart of the city - financial district. You will also find historical monuments left by the British empire, which once ruled over this colony for 150 years. A walk up the mid-level from Central introduced dozens of specialty restaurants which serve from bagels to cajun chicken to pita bread.
Be sure to Fodor with you on your next vacation to Hong Kong. Read and study it and you will find your travel experience rewarding and exciting. Like many tour guides published, local cultures and hang-outs are never sufficient and infact, visitors are usually advised to stay away from "local" areas; yet I recommend you walking through the local neighborhoods i Hong Kong, which are relatively welcoming and safe. You will find surprised delights like roasted goose, exotic Chinese pastries, and hand-made crafts.
Unstructured maps.......2000-09-04
While the book provide some useful information, it is not do a good job providing maps and cross references. I regret I bought it, not very useful at all.

Customer Reviews:
simply wrong.......2007-01-10
I sure hope that the 20th edition is better, because the 19th edition is simply bad. The information is useful here and there, but there are a number of inaccuracies that are extremely frustrating to a traveler. Examples:
1) The book states that American citizens (or more specifically anyone but UK) can get a day visa at the border of mainland China after taking the train there. We thankfully asked the Hong Kong Tourist Board (a much better source of info, btw) before hopping on the train for a 1 hour ride, because it turns out that this is wrong. You need to obtain this visa in Central or Kowloon BEFORE getting to the Chinese border.
2) The location of sites on the maps is just plain wrong at times. For example, we went on a lengthy walk to find the Cityplaza shopping center, which the shopping-in-Causeway-Bay map clearly shows is located in Causeway Bay. It turns out this shopping center is in Quarry Bay several miles away from where it's annotated on the Fodor map. In addition, ALL the maps in the entire book are very low res, so that often only one in every 5 streets is named.
3) We went looking for a recommended Vietnamese restaurant based on its location on the Fodor map. It turns out again that the annotation/number was in the wrong place on the map, on the wrong street. The right street was only two blocks away (impossible to tell since neither the right or the wrong street was named on the map), which wouldn't be too horrible unless you consider that the book itself says that it's not a neighborhood that is safe enough to be randomly walking around.
None of these alone is horrible, but when you add these mistakes (and others I'm sure we didn't stumble across) together, it simply adds frustration to anyone's rare vacation that should be relaxing.
Don't buy this book.
Pedestrian, not much of a Guide and no authority.......2005-12-02
This is a poor compilation for a guide. Much of the information is not enlightning and you can find better and more accurate information in the free guides in Hong Kong Airport and in your Hotel room.
I have better quality of information from my visit the previous year than this guide can provide.
I'm primarily using it now to see whether it can guide me to the better restaurants this time around, I will let you know if it failed on that count to when I come back.
Don't waste you money.
Disappointing.......2005-03-09
No matter how bad remarks were given to the Lonely Planet's edition on Hong Kong, after reading the Fodor's guide I went to bookstore to buy the edition of Lonely Planet. Disappointing, indeed.

Book Description
Have you ever read a book that you couldn't put down? Has that book taken you to other countries, to other centuries? This biography is the story of a child who took her love of children's books and found a way to share it with the world as she grew up. Her voice would be the first to carry the message of children's right to read across the world. It is not too much to say that she started a revolution for children's books in her career as the first children's librarian in the British Commonwealth.
Customer Reviews:
About the first children's librarian in the British Empire.......2003-03-10
Part of Napoleon Publishing's outstanding "Stories of Canada" series dedicated to presenting young readers with the lives of Canadian men and women whose influences have helped to create the world we live in, Believing In Books: The Story Of Lillian Smith is the true story of a remarkable woman who promoted books and reading for children in the early 1900's, and who became the first children's librarian in the British Empire. Lillian Smith's pioneer work in introducing children's literature to people around the world is retold with admiration Sydell Waxman, and illustrated with black-and-white artwork and photographs by Patty Gallinger and Liz Milkau in this magical and engaging look at Lillian's life and literary love.

Book Description
At sixty-three, Maxie McNabb is cruising down the Alaska Highway in her brand-new Winnebago. With her mini-dachshund at her side and the open road ahead, she's never been happier. But before her exploration of the Lower Forty-eight gets underway, Maxie needs to figure out who burgled her friend's Colorado home-and why. And the closer Maxie gets to solving the puzzle, the more it becomes chillingly clear that her friend's life isn't the only one on the line.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful.......2007-06-09
While maybe not as meaty as the Jesse Arnold/Iditarod Alaskan mysteries, this new series by Sue Henry is nevertheless a delight. It features indominatable 60-something widow Maxie McNabb, whom we met in Alaska, and her wonderful mini-dachshund Stretch. The two are traveling companions in a small winebago, and if this doesn't make you want to run out and buy one immediately, nothing will.
In this first in the three-book series (so far), Maxie and Stretch travel down to Colorado (much interesting travel lore among the way) to visit Maxie's oldest and dearest friend Sarah, who is dying of a heart ailment. Not only is it to be a goodbye visit, but Sarah urgently needs to confide something important to Maxie--what, Maxie does not know.
When Maxie reaches her friend's house, she finds to her great sadness that Sarah is comatose in the hospital; apparently, her illness was quicker than expected. Sarah is able to briefly wake up and try to communicate, but her words do not make sense--and she does not last long enough to explain.
Grief-stricken and confused, Maxie is left to put together the pieces--especially when it is found that the death was not natural.
A delicious story, light on mystery but simply a delight to read.
Good RV mystery.......2007-05-25
Sixty-three-year-old Maxie McNabb leaves Alaska in her new Winnebago RV with her mini-dachshund, Stretch, to go see her friend Sarah Nunamaker in Grand Junction, Colorado.
When she arrives, she finds her friend in the hospital and barely conscious and Sarah's house broken into with her bedroom being the worst. When she came, she knew Sarah was on her last days, but is still heartbroken when Sarah dies without Maxie really being able to speak to her. Sarah had tried to talk, but most of it didn't make sense.
Unbeknownst to Maxie, Sarah, her best friend since college, had a baby during college. Maxie just can't believe it, but once she sets eyes on this newfound child of Sarah's she knows it is true. Plus an old flame of Sarah's and Maxie's appears on the scene. Sarah's son, Alan, is very angry and often causes an uproar.
Maxie knows that Sarah was good at hiding things and must find the document she told Maxie she'd written to explain everything. Can she find this document and figure out what is going on before she finds herself needing help?
I have never read anything else by this author. I really liked the characters and the fact that the protagonist travels in an RV. Great idea. Hopefully I will get to read more in this series to see how Maxie develops over time. I enjoyed her spunk and adventure! I recommend this book.
Not a too bad mystery. Interesting enough to keep reading on........2006-10-30
This was my first Sue Henry novel, and though I've read better, this one stayed interesting enough to read it through.
Maxie, a 63-year-old widow is a traveler. She just purchased a new Winnebago and is taking a trip this time to see her friend Sarah who is not doing so well and on her last days. Starting from her home in Alaska, she and her four-legged companion Stretch, (a dachsund), head for Grand Junction Colorado.
What she finds when she gets there is surprising-someone has clearly broken into Sarah's home, and Sarah herself has just landed in the hospital in ICU. So calling the police right away Maxine reports the burglar and the case is filed. But this is not the only time it happens-foul play is up. Sarah has a son Alan who is a very angry sort, and comes and goes. And then there was this unknown child that Sara never told Maxie about, Jamie Stover, who was a child she had given up many years ago. This child had come back into Sara's life, bitter with her, and wanting her share of the estate. The case takes a turn then of suspected foul play, and it is obvious that Sarah died sooner because someone tried to smother her, which made her heart condition worse as determined by the autopsy later in the book. And in the meantime, Maxi is in grave danger being followed by a someone. But whom? And why are they seeking revenge connected with Sara's past?
Introducing a motorhoming sleuth.......2005-12-13
The Serpents Trail is the first in a new mystery series by Alaska author Sue Henry, starring retiree and avid RVer Maxie McNabb - an independent widow whose adventures in her Minnie Winnie motorhome are destined for murderous twists and turns.
Maxie and her mini-dachshund, Stretch, were introduced in Dead North (2002), the 8th book in Henry's established 10-book series starring Alaskan musher Jessie Arnold. In this first book of her own spinoff series, 63-year-old Maxie is cruising down the Alaska Highway in a brand-new Winnebago. She's always been a gypsy at heart - and with her dog at her side in their cozy home on wheels and the open road ahead, she's never been happier.
Maxie's traveling from her home base in Homer, Alaska, to visit her onetime college roommate who is terminally ill in Grand Junction, Colorado. But she finds the house ransacked and Sarah delirious and near death in the hospital. Sarah insists she has left a secret message in the house for Maxie to find.
When Sarah dies, Maxie learns that she is her friend's executor. Not only must she find Sarah's secret, but she also needs to cope with Sarah's surly adopted son; an illegitimate daughter that she never knew existed; a mutual friend from college who has always loved Sarah; and the discovery that Sarah did not die of natural causes.
Liberally sprinkled with Maxie's down-to-earth observations about RVing, life and the characters she meets, The Serpent's Trail is an entertaining, well-plotted "cozy" mystery. Also evident are the author's trademarks - detailed descriptions of natural landscapes and careful research.
Lame.......2005-08-21
Visions of Angela Lansbury or an aging Nancy Drew danced in my head as I read this sweet story. Engaging in spite of its neatly tied up implausible plot, it offers a change of pace from the heavier mysteries on the shelves. I did wonder though if Winnebago and Jameson paid royalties to Ms. Henry for the promotion that she afforded them....

Book Description
Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1837–1915), Victorian England’s bestselling woman writer, blends Dickensian humor with chilling suspense in this “exuberantly campy” (Kirkus Reviews) mystery. The novel features Jabez North, a manipulative orphan who becomes a ruthless killer; Valerie de Cevennes, a stunning heiress who falls into North’s diabolical trap; and Mr. Peters, a mute detective who communicates his brilliant reasoning through sign language.
This edition includes a critical Afterword and endnotes by Victorian scholar Dr. Chris Willis.
Customer Reviews:
Mary Braddon's First Novel Is a Lurid Melodrama.......2003-05-16
Mary Elizabeth Braddon's first novel is a lurid melodrama in which you see plenty of crimes -- murder, blackmail, revenge, etc. Every element found in melodramaric story is thrown into the book, and not surprisingly, it even has some rudimentary detective novel quality.
The story is rather simple; it is about a man called "Daredevil Dick" who is wrongly arrested for killing his rich uncle. Despite the strong belief of Mr. Peters (who is to play the detective role) that Richard is innocent, his plea is ignored.
But that is only the beginning of the gripping story, which goes between a muddy town of Slopperton and fashoionable society of Paris. The story is too improbable but thankfully always moving on, providing many dramatic and often humorous moments about the fate of Richard and those who try to rescue him, and it culminates in the their hunt for the villain who vanished his trail from the crime scene.
The book is weak as a detective novel, so do not expect something like "The Moonstone." As I said, it is more like a melodrama, and there are countless occasions of incredible coincidences. But that is one of the conventions you can find in this kind of popular novels intended for commercial purpose. It is interesting for us to see that Braddon does not still find her own voice; her style in this book is a strange concoction of Dickens and melodrama. Read the opening chapter and you instantly recognize the influence of Dickensian sentences about the rainy London in "Bleak House."
The novel itself (which was first published as "Three Times Dead" and later revised and retitled as the present one) is not as good as her works like "Lady Audley's Secret" and others, its flaws being too palpable. Still, if you like her novels or these Victorian or 19th century thriller -- like Eugene Sue's novels -- you might be interested in the book as I was.
This modern library edition has Sarah Waters' introduction (which I found not so impressive), but more remarkable thing about it is that it has also the afterword and notes by acclaimed Victorian scholar Chris Willis. The notes (32 pages) are extensive and helpful, but more helpful is her afterword, which puts Braddon in context of the history of detective fiction. Much more informative than obligatory "further reading" list.
And the book also has the reprint of Braddon's own memoir titled "My First Novel" published in 1893. This short account by her own pen does not reveal much about the book or herself, but it has several clear-cut illustrations of her house in Richmond.
panache, dash, and brio.......2003-04-08
Pure pleasure, or nearly so, from beginning to end. Written in surprisingly accessible prose (for a nineteenth-century novel, that is), Trail of the Serpent zips from reversal to counter-reversal, including one that knocked me completely for a loop, and I pride myself on figuring these sorts of things out. There are the odd longueurs, particularly in the last third, but this is a great rediscovery, and if you're at all fond of Woman in White, Moonstone, Drood, etc., you'll have a blast.

Book Description
1936. A further installment into the author's own experiences and investigations into various individual secret societies, their affiliations, their occult practices, their pseudo-religious and political activities. Going back to Patriarchal times, he attempts to trace, step by step, the worship of the ancient serpent, the Creative Principle, the God of all initiates, from the early cabiri, through paganism to the pseudo-Christianity of the Gnostics and Cabalists, these latter largely emanating under the influence of the Hellenised Jews of Alexandria.

Set in 1942 in the Dutch Indies during WWII when Japanese forces overran the Dutch colonial empire, thus ending three centuries of rule in Indonesia. The stunned colonists of the island of Borneo have only once chance to escape...to reach the sea and hope a friendly passing vessel picks them up. For the fifty-odd survivors of the trek across the mountains, their savior appears in the form of an atheist midget who is Captain Krasser of the Henny, a WWI salvage vessel. Captain Krasser agrees to take the starving people on board on one condition: that the clergymen and nuns amongst them swear an oath forsaking their beliefs and admitting hypocrisy. Only Sister Ursula refuses and despite her critical condition is banned to the foredeck, isolated and ignored. The deathbed oath that Sister Ursula finally swears to Captain Krasser and the promise she elicits in return are the prime concerns of this riveting novel. The trip of the Henny, camouflaged as a floating island as it creeps along the coast and journeys across seas infested with enemy submarines, is a story that will not soon be forgotten.

Book Description
The Lost 13th Tribe: America in Prophecy by Dr. Marlin Kime is the first volume of a multi-volume work that, for the first time, answers the most important questions about America. Who are we in history? Where did we come from? What does the future hold for us? For the first century and a half of America's existence, it was invincible as it achieved unprecedented heights of power, wealth, and greatness. And it did all of this in the face of daunting, hopeless and impossible obstacles arrayed against it. These volumes show exactly how and why this was accomplished. Conversely, why was America able to achieve such overwhelming and incredible victories against its powerful Axis foes of World War II and yet fail miserably against the third rate Third World nations of Korea and Vietnam? These volumes thoroughly explain the hidden reasons behind these enigmas of history. Centuries ago, all of this was foretold in the most intricate, precise, and accurate detail in the pages of the ancient prophets of the Bible. What great purpose awaits America? Does the future hold the promise of an even greater destiny than ever before imagined for this nation? Or perhaps an ominous foreboding looms on the horizon?
