Non-Sensical Writing.......2007-09-14

Annie Dillard's book is mostly a composition of nonsense. Here is an execrpt from the book;
"I look at [the grasshoppers'] tapered, chitin-covered abdomen, plated and barred as a tank tread, and was about to turn away when I saw it breathe, puff, puff, and I grew sympathetic. Yeah, I said, puf, puff, isn't it? It jerked away with a buzz . . . and continued to puff in the grass. So puff it is, and that's all there is; though I'm partial to honey myself."
The book is full of nonsensical garble like this. If anyone has an explanation to this, feel free to correct me!

Wonderful Read, But Oh My..........2000-06-14

I love nature writing, so to my mind, this is a grand book. All the great writers are here, with one exception: there is a signal lack of modern nature writers (last half of the 20th Century). Beyond that, the selection of great nature writers is first rate.

The real problem with this book is that it is so big and the binding so weak you really can't take this book into nature to read it. I took it with me during a trip to the north end of the Queen Charlotte Islands; the moment I found a spot to relax and got the book out, I found I was wrestling with a ten pound weight that flopped all over the place. So, a warning: this book is for the fireside or a cozy evening in bed, not the field. Otherwise, wonderful!

Arboles=Trees.......2004-07-20

If you need a bilingual (English and Spanish) book on the (United) State Trees, this is your book. Each page discusses one state tree and the text is divided into two columns with the Spanish on the left and the English on the right of the page. Each tree has a painting of the whole tree and a close-up view of a branch and the fruit or flowers. Includes the scientific name for each tree and a cross reference to other states that have the same state tree. In those cases the information is not repeated, but additional information is provided. This is an in-depth guide to Normandy, France with excellent maps and color photographs, descriptions of sites to see with detailed and practical information, historical notes, and suggestions. Reasonably comprehensive at reasonable cost for a regional guide, but as far as accommodations go, only lists chains, not specific hotels.

Unionoida (naiads) are characterized by larvae which have to pass through a parasitic stage on a host fish. Some of these host-parasite systems are unique, since the generation time of the parasite exceeds that of its host by a factor of ten. There is tremendous life history variation. With a life span of more than 200 years, some naiad species belong to the longest-lived invertebrates, some are highly host-specific, some are extremely fertile, some produce very peculiar larvae, and some occur at very high population densities.
This volume describes and explains the characteristics and life histories of the naiads, the interactions with their hosts, and their evolution. It elucidates the manifold implications of their presence or absence in a lake or stream. Further, aspects of nature conservation are covered, as many naiad species are seriously threatened. Some have been used successfully as sensitive pollutant indicators in habitat monitoring and as "archives" for environmental changes.

This monograph presents the mathematical description and numerical computation of the high-frequency diffracted wave by an immersed elastic wave with normal incidence. The mathematical analysis is based on the explicit description of the principal symbol of the pseudo-differential operator connected with the coupled linear problem elasticity/fluid by the wedge interface. This description is subsequently used to derive an accurate numerical computation of diffraction diagrams for different incoming waves in the fluid, and for different wedge angles. The method can be applied to any problem of coupled waves by a wedge interface. This work is of interest for any researcher concerned with high frequency wave scattering, especially mathematicians, acousticians, engineers.
