5 out of 5 stars a good start to a new lifestyle, must read.......2004-03-15

i read this book after i became vegan, and although i knew much of this information already, some was still new to me. i reccomend this book for all people interested in becoming involved with animals rights and/or vegetarianism. while this book was written in the late 80's, and statistical facts may be a little off, much of the inhumane treatment of these animals has yet to change at all. it is hard to see how any person with a conscience could turn their back on the issues posed in this book. please read it for the sake of yourself, the environment, and your fellow earthlings, the animals.

        Book Description

First published in 1994 and now available again, this Spanish Borderlands classic recounts Jesuit colonization of the Old California, the peninsula now known as Baja California. Jesuit missionaries founded their first settlement in 1697 and unintentionally created a Hispanic society that outlived the missions and their Indian converts. The author brings to light Jesuit missionization and culture, European-Indian contacts, mission and presidio operations, family social life, the unique peninsular economy, and the Jesuit expulsion. Four appendices provide data on Spanish kings, royal officials, Jesuit personnel and visitors, and founders of pre-1768 peninsular California families.

This Spanish Borderlands classic recounts Jesuit colonization of the Old California, the peninsula now known as Baja California.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive and Fascinating.......2001-04-29

When missionaries came to colonize California, it was to Baja California "Antigua California" that they came. This is the story of the Jesuits who persevered in a barren, waterless, resource poor place. But the really great thing about the book is that it is the whole story of the pioneer mission period: it is also the story of the aboriginal peoples who were the targets of the Jesuits, and of the people (mostly Mexican) whom the Jesuits hired and brought along to handle and create daily life-soldiers, sailors, artisans, laborers. For once, a comprehensive history truly is. Using original eighteenth century materials (church records, diaries, letters, reports) the author has tracked down the movement of individuals, their genealogies, their careers, their contributions. More than most, it is a book of portraits of real people, pieced together sympathetically from scattered and scanty records. For a scholar, the book is eminently useful: full of maps, chronological tables of people and places, explanations of systems and bureaucracies. For the history buff, it is a dream of readability and detail. Highly recommended.

        Book Description

California's earliest European colonists--Russian merchants and Spanish missionaries--depended heavily on Native Americans for labor to build and maintain their colonies, but they did so in very different ways. This richly detailed book brings together disparate skeins of the past--including little-known oral histories, native texts, ethnohistory, and archaeological excavations--to present a vivid new view of how native cultures fared under these two colonial systems. Kent Lightfoot's innovative work, which incorporates the holistic methods of historical anthropology, explores the surprising ramifications of these long-ago encounters for the present-day political status of native people in California.
Lightfoot weaves the results of his own significant archaeological research at Fort Ross, a major Russian mercantile colony, into a cross-cultural comparison, showing how these two colonial ventures--one primarily mercantile and one primarily religious--contributed to the development of new kinds of native identities, social forms, and tribal relationships. His lively account includes personal anecdotes from the field and a provocative discussion of the role played by early ethnographers, such as Alfred Kroeber, in influencing which tribes would eventually receive federal recognition. Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants takes a fascinating, yet troubling, look at California's past and its role in shaping the state today.

4 out of 5 stars Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants.......2007-07-16

Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants: The Legacy of Colonial Encounters on the California Frontiers is an important book that urges that anthropological, archaeological, and historical researchers undertake further study into the interplay and ramifications of this interplay between California First Nations and early colonial influences by the Franciscan missionaries and the Russian merchants. The author states that currently many native groups are not officially recognized as such by the United States government and thus do not enjoy the same rights and privileges as other federally recognized native communities. The reasons why these groups are not federally recognized are a very complex interweave of history, politics, and religion primarily steaming from the interactions or lack of interactions between these native communities, the Franciscan missionaries and the Russian merchants. As research in these areas is incomplete and at best spotty, the author calls for "long term diachronic perspective on the rise and fall of colonial frontiers to understand the status of native communities today to know why some are recognized and others are not".

Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants is a well written piece of research. The author outlines past research on the subject while also adding his own historical and archaeological research into the mix. Though written as the findings of a research project, this book, though perhaps somewhat challenging at times, would be an enlightening read for anyone wanting to further understand colonial California or those wondering about why some native communities are federally recognized and others are not. The author writes about an important part of the American past that is little explored and little known in the public eye. In this way, this book serves as both a beacon and a resource to learn about these important aspects of the American past.

This is the only edition available of this important work in any language! It chronicles the spread of Christianity through the Borderlands of Northern Mexico and Arizona, Texas and the Californias, by members of the Franciscan order. It focuses especially on the life of Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesus. Absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in the old Spanish missions of the Borderlands. It provides a real insight into Franciscan missionary efforts in Central America, and the Southwest.

                      Book Description

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is based on the fact that certain nuclei exhibit a magnetic moment, oriented by a magnetic field, and absorb characteristic frequencies in the radiofrequency part of the spectrum. The spectral lines of the nuclei are highly influenced by the chemical environment i.e. the structure and interaction of the molecules. NMR is now the leading technique and a powerful tool for the investigation of the structure and interaction of molecules. The present Landolt-Börnstein volume III/35 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Data is therefore of major interest to all scientists and engineers who intend to use NMR to study the structure and the binding of molecules. Volume III/35 "NMR-Data" is divided into several subvolumes and parts. Subvolume III/35A contains the nuclei 11B and 31P, subvolume III/35B contains the nuclei 19F and 15N, subvolume III/35C contains the nucleus 1H, subvolume III/35D contains the nucleus 13C, subvolume III/35E contains the nucleus 17O, and subvolume III/35G contains the nucleus 77Se. More nuclei will be presented later.

                        Book Description

Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) was probably written late in the ninth or early in the tenth century. Mention at the end of the tale that smoke still rose from Mount Fuji, a sign it was an active volcano, is an important clue to the date of composition, for we know that by 905 A.D. the mountain had ceased to emit smoke. Regardless of exactly when the tale was first set down on paper, it is the oldest surviving Japanese work of fiction; The Tale of Genji (written about 1010) referred to it as the "ancestor of all romances." Many theories have been published about the authorship, but they are little more than guesses. The names of five suitors, resembling those of members of the Japanese court of the eighth century, have suggested to some scholars that The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter was conceived of as a satire directed against a certain court faction, but this is not how the work was read in later centuries. Today it is thought of mainly as a children's story, and Kaguya-hime, the heroine, looks in the illustrations as lovable as Snow-White or Cinderella; there is no suggestions of the heartlessness that is perhaps her most memorable feature.

5 out of 5 stars Clearing the Bamboo.......2007-04-27

There's some confusion in the earlier reviews. Keene has translated the early 10th-century Japanese tale (with the original on facing pages), NOT Kawabata's modern version, which is printed in back in Japanese (no translation). I also have to take issue with the Amazon reviewer's use of "heartlessness" to describe the main character. She's not of this earth, and consequently can't marry anyone: her actions are taken to spare the feelings of others, not out of heartlessness. (She's got plenty of heart for her adopted parents.) The tale is a wonderful example of early Japanese literature, and the art is gorgeous. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A subtle blend of story and art.......2002-02-12

This is an elegant package. The story is a classic Japanese folktale interpreted by one of Japan's greatest writers. A cautionary tale about love between humans and spirits, it is a well paced story, calm and quiet like a new moon. The text is balanced with the original Japanese script on one side and the English translation on the other. Interspersed though out are beautiful paper-cut illustrations. "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" is very much a piece of book art.

The only drawback of this edition is the size. It is small, and would have benefited from a hard-backed coffee table edition. As it is, it is too fragile to be a child's book.

This is a wonderful story beautifully told. The excellent translation brings across Kawabata's style. The pictures are gorgeous. It is short, but wonderful.

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter was my introduction to Kawabata and I loved it. Yasunari Kawabata was the first Japanese writer to be honored with a Nobel Prize. Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) is an extremely old Japanese story, credited to around the late ninth or early tenth century under disputed authorship.

Donald Keene has done a wonderful job of translating Kawabata. This is a fast paced fable beautiflly presented in an oblong book. Physically it is one of the most attractive books I have ever purchased.

This translation of Tale of the Bamboo Cutter had been delayed by twenty years before the translator Keene came across a brilliant series of paintings done by Miyata Masayuki of the same story. The elements finally came together to create one of the most beautifully presented books I've come across.

The book is 176 pages long, presented with Japanese and English on opposite pages. Don't expect a long read here, perhaps only a day or so's worth, but you won't be disappointed. This is truly a beautiful story that I hope you, like me, will return to from time to time to enjoy.

                          Book Description

This charming retelling of a Japanese folktale couples stunning illustrations with a magical story of love, integrity, and self-sacrifice. The tale begins when a loving couple discovers a tiny baby girl in a thicket of bamboo stalks and takes her home to raise as their own. The Bamboo Princess, as she comes to be known, grows into womanhood while fending off suitors, caring for her new family, and ultimately fulfilling her destiny by returning to her true and rightful home—the moon. In the mold of traditional Japanese morality tales, this story reinforces values of bravery, hard work, and humility. A full explanation of the research and meticulous preparations behind the illustrator’s intricate artwork, which harkens back to time-honored Japanese block prints, is also included.
