The material contained within is well researched and well presented, making it an invaluable reference for anyone wanting to know about the biology of great apes, their distribution, threats to their survival and actions being taken with respect conservation of Great Apes. The title has many applications - from those working in fields of zoology through to those wanting to develop educational information about Great Apes. It also provides insight into those factors that contribute to the success of conservation endeavours. I'd have no hestitation in recommending this reference.

This book describes half a century of progress in two mainstream areas of biological research: membrane transport, initially a focus of physiologists, and oxidative phosphorylation, initially a focus of biochemists. Robinson shows how the development of new explanatory models had unexpectedly merged these inquiries into a new field, bioenergetics. In the late 1930s, explanations for the asymmetric distribution of ions between cells and their environments invoked absolute impermeabilities of the cell's surrounding membranes. But new experiments contradicted that idea and demonstrated that forming the transmembrane distributions required metabolic energy, implying the participation of active transport "pumps." Subsequent studies identified, isolated, and characterized these pumps as enzymes coupling ionic transport to the consumption of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an "energy-rich" molecule serving as a cellular energy store. In the late 1930s oxidative phosphylation, the process of coupling ATP synthesis to oxidative metabolism, was identified. The explanatory model emerging in the next decades, however, did not follow the enzymatic precedents of known metabolic phosphorylations but rather embodied the principle that metabolic oxidations drive active transport pumps to create transmembrane distribution of ions, with these ionic asymmetries then driving ATP synthesis. It was discovered that ATP consumption can form ionic asymmetries; ionic asymmetries can drive ATP formation; and ionic asymmetries-like ATP-can also power other cellular functions.

This is a fun book. Even if you don't have an interest in the markets, you can still really enjoy it. Erdman does a great job of explaining the sometimes complicated market elements. And for those with a market bent, the concepts the author interweaves are intriguing and thought-provoking.

Good Book From Erdman!.......2004-12-14

This book is about international banker Willy Saxon. He is brought down by the junk bond market and has to serve a three year prison sentence.Unlike Boesky and Milken he refuses to turn
state's evidence.He uses 74 million dollars that he has stashed in Europe to covertly purchase a San Fransisco investment house.
Saxon also purchases a Napa Valley ranch which he turns into a
high tech trading exchange.He makes use of bogus bonds(tax free
zero coupon bond) and runs into problems.He manages to escape this situation by accurately predicting the plunge of the
German mark.Willy also shows traits of becoming quite ladie's man with some of the wealthy women in San Francisco.This turned
out to be a very interesting book.

Fast Pace, Talented Author.......2002-08-05

This book's release in the pre-internet days prevents it from getting its deserved recognition. Erdman has written well-received books since the 1970s. Snappy dialog containing factual information about the world of high finance both educates and entertains the reader.

Imagine my disappointment after searching for this book to discover it's merely a summarized version like a Cliff Notes for a child. I suppose in Amazon's mind there is nothing misleading about the way they describe the book. Anyway, spend $2.00 for a used hardback of the full book instead this glorified comic book.

I was shocked when I received the Penguin-version: It contained 51 pages, when the original is 224 pages! It takes place in England!!!

I had ordered this book for my grand-daughter, as I am a Berliner and wanted her to discover a part of her literary heritage, but this version is "RETOLD" and has absolutely nothing in common with the original! Don't buy it. Instead consider the Hard-cover version, that will be released in April 2006.

I wish that Amazon.com would have taken the time to point out these facts under the descriptions.

Children's Classic.......2005-08-15

I first read this book as a child, and loved it then. Decades later, I found an ancient copy in my library's annual sale of books they no longer wanted to keep. As an adult, I like it still. The story moves quickly, the characters are engaging, and there's a flavor of Berlin at a more innocent time in the 1920s. Emil takes a train trip to visit relatives in Berlin. When the money he is carrying is stolen, he resolves to catch the thief.

This is a vintage kids' book that delivers the goods: mystery, intrigue, hallucination (dream) descriptions (was that chocolate bar spiked?), chase scenes, double-entendre character names, an interesting plot, likeable characters, and a John Grisham hero-gets-the-big-bucks type ending. A classic which I read and re-read as a child, this is a book to introduce kids to the detective novel genre, and it has stood up well to the passage of time. I recently purchased a copy for sentimental reasons, and guess what - I read it, and re-read it again (and again). There is a moralistic foundation to the story, but the good guys are just mischievous enough to be fun to be around, and the story is a great story, even if a little far-fetched to be believable. But it's totally believable if you use your imagination, and that's the fun of it!

This book is delightful!.......2000-07-22

I always avoided "Emil & the Detectives" when I was a kid because I thought it would be scary. I finally read it in my twenties, and kicked myself for missing it before. The story and characters are completely engaging, and the writing style is so humorous. May Massee's translation is a bit dated in regard to slang--it was done in the twenties--but she captures a wonderfully droll sensibility that I hope really exists in the German original. I am so mad that this book is out of print, because I want to buy it for my little cousin, who's a big Harry Potter fan, and I know would love this book too. If you can, try and find a version that has Kastner's hilarious introduction, in which he discusses the difficulty of finding a good idea for a story, even when you're lying on the floor under the dining room table.

This book is an exciting and breathtaking adventure.I loved this book because the main character reminded me of me. It was one of the best books I ever read. There were character descriptions under every picture. This helped me to see what the characters looked like and helped me keep them straight in the story. I felt like Emil was a one of a kind character. I never read any books with a character like him. He was really smart the way he solved the myster.The professor was also a really good character. He really acted like a professor even though he was a kid. I reccomend this book to any kids who like adventures!

JUNIOR G-MEN STALK A THIEF!.......1999-04-12

Hey, this is one cute read--kidlite style! Set in 1929 Germany, but not about war or politics, this 160-page story will appeal to elementary and middle school children. As an adult I was surprised to discover that I enjoyed it more the second time. Young Emill is traveling alone by train to visit his grandmother in Berlin, but en route he is robbed of DM 120--which he had pinned inside his coat pocket. Disaster for the son of a poor, single-mom, hairdreser?????

Not for long; this plucky lad grabs his suitcase and wilting flowers to pursue the thief, whom he recognizes at the station. He has the incredible good luck to attract the attention of a street-smart kid named Gustav (have auto horn, will honk!) This enterprising kid gleefully enlists the aid of a dozen "good men" to stalk the crook and help Emil recover the money meant for Grandmother. "In Sherlock Holmes terms, he forms the Berlin Irregulars!

This spontaneous organization is not to be scoffed at; the street detectives act with amazing speed and intelligence, despite occasional childish outbursts re job assignments and clothing. They prove how practical and resourceful kids can be, as the rally around poor, friendles Emil like an instant family. The crook hardly stands a chance, even though he smugly thinks that he got away with it. Once he has registered at a hotel for the night, clever Gustav dons a bell boy's disguise to keep tabs on the perp.

Yep--the Sting operation begins the next morning, when the creep leaves the hotel and the Chase in on! Emil's eager girl cousin, Pony Hutchen (little-hat) is smart and spunky, but relegated to mere female/cheerleader status in this pre-Girls Liberation tale. : <( This is a darling book, as fresh now as when it was written, with cute German names to add to the humor. A delightful book for kids of all ages!

I had read this book as a child, and have read it since. It had been a joyful experience both times. There is a certain childlike naivety in the world described in the book, that is no longer found in our world today, unfortunately
