    Book Description

This useful book is designed to teach natural resources professionals how to be more effective in solving conservation and environmental policy problems. Its presentation of basic concepts, case studies, and "real world concerns" provides a deeper understanding of the policy process and makes the book an invaluable aid for students and practitioners in such fields as wildlife biology, conservation biology, forestry, range management, ecosystem management, and sustainable development. Tim W. Clark begins by describing the challenges faced by natural resources professionals. He then explains how the substance and process of policy analysis and decision making can be improved by using a policy sciences framework that takes into account biological, social, political, and institutional considerations. Finally he reflects on how issues of human rights and morality should affect natural resources management and policy analysis. The book is very user-friendly.

5 out of 5 stars Best AT resource I've found.......2002-09-10

There are tons of "I Hiked the Appalachian Trail" books, and just as many "How to Hike the Appalachian Trail" books, but this is the only one that tells (and explains) what you are going to see while you're out there. Why does a particular flower grow here and not there? What kind of forest am I walking through? How can I tell the difference between bear scat and fox scat? Why are there no trees on the top of this mountain when there is no true treeline in the South?
Then there are the little tidbits like why a box turtle is called a box turtle, how rhodendron grows in such dense thickets, and how bogs come to be.
A great book--and the winner of the Society of American Travel Writer's Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award for best new guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars Best naturalist guide to the AT.......2001-05-04

This books contains everything you would ever want to know or would expect to encounter on the Appalachian Trail. It gives a quick overview of the history of the trail and a concise description of how the Appalachian Mountains came into being and why they look the way they do today. Individual chapters cover the trees, flowers, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians found along the trail. In easy to understand writing, Adkins provides bits of information on how a plant reproduces, where it lives, why it looks the way it does, etc. The chapters on mammals, birds and reptiles not only give an identification description of each animal, but also how it goes about its daily life and what signs to look for to see if it has been in the area recently. The book won the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award, and deserves it. I found my walks in the woods to be greatly enhanced after looking through this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good starting-place for middle school history students.......2000-03-29

Although this book contributes little or no previously-unknown information regarding the westward journey and arduous winter in the mountains endured by the members of the Donner Party, it does present the facts in a straightforward and easily-read manner and provides a basic chronology of events. Young readers with a desire to learn about one of American history's most incredible stories of courage and strength will find this a quick read--and, hopefully, will be encouraged to read more about the Donner Party and American historical events. The language found in the source documents, regrettably, has been edited severely--to the point of grammatical accuracy! (I enjoy seeing for myself the horrendous spelling and grammatical mistakes which lend an air of authenticity to many of the other studies of the Donner Party.) The reader should understand that James Reed is shown in a more favorable light than he is in many other Donner books, no doubt, due to the fact that his daughter was the author. Several interesting photographs and illustrations are included, which enhance the appeal of the book. I would certainly recommend "Across the Plains..." to middle school students. I hope it would motivate them to pursue the topic further; the story of the Donner Party is one of the most fascinating in our country's history.

5 out of 5 stars Superb adventure survival story told by those who lived it........1996-05-18

History students are urged to seek primary sources to discover the excitement of digging for clues to the past. Editor Karen Zeinert's skillful weaving together of the journals and letters of members of the Donner party tells their chilling story from their festive departure from Illinois in April, 1846 through the decisions that led to their tragic 6 month winter in the Sierra Nevadas. Students reading to discover if the tales of cannibalism are true will be equally fascinated by descriptions of a buffal

                          Book Description

This book presents a systematic treatment of Markov chains, diffusion processes and state space models, as well as alternative approaches to Markov chains through stochastic difference equations and stochastic differential equations. It illustrates how these processes and approaches are applied to many problems in genetics, carcinogenesis, AIDS epidemiology and other biomedical systems.

One feature of the book is that it describes the basic MCMC (Markov chain and Monte Carlo) procedures and illustrates how to use the Gibbs sampling method and the multilevel Gibbs sampling method to solve many problems in genetics, carcinogenesis, AIDS and other biomedical systems.

As another feature, the book develops many state space models for many genetic problems, carcinogenesis, AIDS epidemiology and HIV pathogenesis. It shows in detail how to use the multilevel Gibbs sampling method to estimate (or predict) simultaneously the state variables and the unknown parameters in cancer chemotherapy, carcinogenesis, AIDS epidemiology and HIV pathogenesis. As a matter of fact, this book is the first to develop many state space models for many genetic problems, carcinogenesis and other biomedical problems.

                            Book Description

Victor Klee and Stan Wagon discuss some of the unsolved problems in number theory and geometry, many of which can be understood by readers with a very modest mathematical background. The presentation is organized around 24 central problems, many of which are accompanied by other, related problems. The authors place each problem in its historical and mathematical context, and the discussion is at the level of undergraduate mathematics. Each problem section is presented in two parts. The first gives an elementary overview discussing the history and both the solved and unsolved variants of the problem. The second part contains more details, including a few proofs of related results, a wider and deeper survey of what is known about the problem and its relatives, and a large collection of references. Both parts contain exercises, with solutions. The book is aimed at both teachers and students of mathematics who want to know more about famous unsolved problems.

5 out of 5 stars Were to Find a Math Problem.......2007-07-04

I admit I didn't read the entire book. But don't think that discredits my review. You see this is a special math book... One that you don't read cover to cover. You simply skim through the book and pick a unsolved problem that interest you. So you see it isn't read cover to cover like a textbook. And that is what makes this such an excellent math book. The book isn't about remembering rules it is about problem solving. And the organization of the book helps in gathering facts and understanding how others have approached the problem.

Unsolved problems is part of what mathematics are based on. Most of the content is easy to understand at undergraduate level. For fun I recommend only reading the problem's description and do your own research and later compare it to the second section of the book. I have worked on Prime numbers and have made some progress. (Just check my profile.) Math work does not get done without math problems. So if you are looking for a learning experience this is an excellent place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Essential background information on old, unsolved problems.......2002-10-31

If progress towards the solution of the unsolved problems is to be continuous, then those in the field must be reminded on a regular basis. Furthermore, it is pretty clear that many of these problems will not be solved using "traditional" approaches, but by some sort of back or side door method. Therefore, those in other areas of mathematics need to see the unsolved problems presented. One never knows when someone working in an area that appears to be unrelated will read a problem and realize that what they are doing can be used to obtain a solution.
This work not only presents the problems, but also gives enough background to allow the non-specialist to understand them. Several leading theorems and their proofs are given, all in a clear, concise style. Many exercises are given at the end of sections, with hints toward solution at the back of the book.
The methods used would also allow this book to be used as a text in an advanced undergraduate colloquium or beginning graduate seminar in the golden oldies of mathematics. The competent undergraduate will have no difficulty comprehending the majority of the material.
An excellent addition to any collection, this book is a key. For it is clear that many of the unsolved problems will be defeated by one who never started with that intent, but saw the problem and had the correct leap of insight.

                              Book Description

Every man of humanity must wish that slavery, even in its best and most mitigated form, had never found a legal sanction, and must regret that its system is now so incorporated with the welfare of Great Britain as well as of Jamaica, as to make its extirpation an absolute impossibilitiy, without the certainty of producing worse mischiefs than the one which we annihilate. Matthew Lewis is best remembered as the author of the sensational Gothic novel The Monk (1796). He was also a slave-owner, inheriting two large plantations and visiting Jamaica twice in 1815-16 and 1817-18, primarily to investigate the living and working conditions of his slaves. His anecdotal record, the Journal of a West India Proprietor, was not published until 1834, nearly twenty years after his death from yellow fever on the second return voyage. Warmly praised by Coleridge, the Journal's vivid descriptions and lively, self-deprecating tone make it one of the most readable accounts from a slave-owners perspective of plantation life. Yet, although Lewis emerges as a humane and enthusiastic chronicler, his omissions are as significant as the carnivalesque vignettes he sketches, and, for all his geniality, he is unable to break through the framework of imperialist discourse. Situated between the eradication of slavery under British imperialism in 1807 and emancipation in 1834-1838, the Journal of a West India Proprietor records a colonial encounter, between slave-holder and slaves, at a significant historical moment. This unique edition provides full contextual background and includes Lewis's verse narrative The Isle of Devils, as well as a telling last letter and extract from his papers.
