David Abram's writing casts a spell of its own as he weaves the reader through a meticulously researched work that gently addresses such seemingly daunting topics as where the past and future exist, the relationship between space and time, and how the written word serves to sever humans from their primordial source of sustenance: the earth.
"Only as the written text began to speak would the voices of the forest, and of the river, begin to fade. And only then would language loosen its ancient associations with the invisible breath, the spirit sever itself from the wind, the psyche dissociate itself from the environing air," writes Abram of the separation caused by the proliferation of the written word.
In writing The Spell of the Sensuous, Abram consulted an engaging collection of peoples and works. He uses aboriginal song lines, stories from the Koyukon people of northwestern Alaska, the philosophy of phenomenology, and the speeches of Socrates to paint a poetic landscape that explains how we became separated from the earth in the first place. With minimal environmental doomsaying, Abram discusses how we can begin to recover a sustainable relationship with the earth and the nonhuman beings who live among us--in the more-than-human world. --Kathryn True
Book Description
David Abram draws on sources as diverse as the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, Balinese shamanism, Apache storytelling, and his own experience as an accomplished sleight-of-hand magician to reveal the subtle dependence of human cognition on the natural environment. He explores the character of perception and excavates the sensual foundations of language, which--even at its most abstract--echoes the calls and cries of the earth. On every page of this lyrical work, Abram weaves his arguments with passion and intellectual daring.
"Long awaited, revolutionary...This book ponders the violent disconnection of the body from the natural world and what this means about how we live and die in it."--Los Angeles Times

mixed.......2007-08-05
In this elegantly titled book Abrams argues about a "language older than words" - a language of immediacy imbued with connectedness between an (indigenous) person and her environemnt. The landscape talks and sensitive and attuned people listen and hear it speak. Abrams' `ecophenomenology' coincides with a plethora of similarly well-intentioned works that have appeared in recent years.
Abrams shares this basic idea with others - phenomenologists, philosophers, linguists, ethnographers and anthropologists many of whom performed research on indigenous peoples from around the world. For an indigenous person the intimacy between the landscape and the inner space of feeling is rather ordinary and normal, certainly nothing special. That someone has to argue that this communication even exists is, to someone living close to nature almost incomprehensible.
Be that as it may, Abrams quotes other people (indigenous folks and their observers) copiously and not always consistently. His own contribution I find a bit sketchy and perhaps even problematic. For example, he goes to great length trying to shift the blame for the ecological blindness of Western man from our absurd belief in a warlike, genocidal and jealous Hebrew deity to Greek philosophers and their use of abstract language. This is not a little disingenuous, since It is the followers of the 3 monotheistic religions that are the most responsible for dissociating humans from the polytheistic/pantheistic view of nature that honors harmony and awareness of a living landscape.... as evidenced in the stoning of ancient Hebrews who worshipped Astarte and the Earth Goddess(es), killings of pagans and mystics throughout the Medieval Europe and Arab world (e.g.; Suhrawardi in the 13th century).
Perhaps a more serious concern is that although Abrams pays lip service to the indigenous relationship with the landscape, he does this through the prism of his own logocentric viewpoint rooted in Western anthropology and phenomenology (quoting Husserl and Merleau-Ponty). His use of concepts aiming at disentangling himself from the conceptual double-bind reminds me of a fly ineffectually buzzing around spider's web. Apart from the Introduction - which is promising, as it suggests Abrams will use the book to talk about his personal experiences, insights or revelations, the book itself is a brainy, abstract and a superconceptual treatise, I personally had to skip pages as it sometimes simply got too boring. The diametric opposite of SOTS would probably be Jensen's Language Older Than Words - a brilliant personal expose on the same topic which, for reasons unclear to me, received much less attention. Be that as it may, the interest in SOTS signifies that ecophenomenology is here to stay and i personally am happy about it.
Finding Lost Connections with the World.......2007-06-12
This amazing study has put me back in touch with a truth I have always known in part, but now understand at a new depth. David Abram's understanding of language as the medium of all connexion with the world we are part of is profound and opens a realm of experience that few in the so-called developed cultures are now even dimly aware of. An enlightened and timely addition to the renewed human search for meaning.
An Awakening to Nature--The Call to Embodiment.......2007-05-27
Abrams tells the story of Earth--Gaia--as a living organism that speaks and breathes through us--and through all living things (and if we only listen, all things are living as they are part of Earth, the rhythm of all harmonizes into a breathing landscape). Abrams' work calls for a reawakening of nature, "who has lost [her] voice" (p. 138), a reawakening of our psyche that "lives the language of our lives more deeply" (p. 59). With the loss of nature, we have lost part of ourselves--we have abstracted ourselves from the environment, making the landscape irrelevant to our lives through the persistent valuing of technique and human over organic and alive. Through privileging human voices, we have forgotten to listen to the larger ecology, and have made our lives bare, commonplace. Wonder has been lost.
Abrams' works invites ecological pedagogy--pedagogy attuned to the sounds and rhythms of the lifeworld. Ecological pedagogy might use myth to reveal the energy of the world (Campbell). Myth is not a search for the meaning of life, but an "interior road map of experience", a revelation of human experience. Myth is a "singing of the universe...[that] calls us to a deeper awareness of the living itself" (Campbell). Through the retelling of myths, through the dancing or reenactment of myths (as Abrams tells us village elders do for Dreamtime (p. 170)), we can re-enliven the stories in our own time, and give more possibilities for meaning to our experiences.
Ritual might also be used in ecological pedagogy to guide us in re-enlivening the world. Rituals were performed before all important events in cultures with close ties to land--before hunting expeditions, before harvesting. We have forgotten that these matters hold meaning (i.e., we stop by Wendy's on our way home from work or school and don't give a second thought to where our food came from). Ritual is a way of offering homage to the earth, of showing appreciation and gratitude; but it is not only, or even primarily, for the earth, as Helen Payne (quoted in Abrams, p. 171) tells us is true for oral cultures. For the modern technological man, ritual would primarily reawaken the bond and awareness of the Other in nature, of animals and earth and sky. We have lost these words that "used to reverberate with meaning" (Van Mannen).
Insightful book........2007-04-19
I read this book when it was first published many years ago. After rereading it recently, I was struck by its insight and power to move me again.
Abram's is not only a visionary and a mystic but a slight of hand magician. This book is more than a eco-philosophy but shifts perceptual fields of awareness.
My only regret is the author has not written anything since this visionary work came out. Too powerful of a voice to fade into the past.
Journey.......2006-01-01
I read this book when my toddler daughter was just at a time when if I said something was a red herring she was looking for the fish, she seemed just exactly in the moment he was talking about in the text that I had long lost. Something as simple as feeling the rain on her face or trying to walk across the shine on the mall floor caused her to fear falling into the pool she saw from the surface or not knowing if it felt cold or hurt, this falling rain so rare out in her CA home, trying to tell me of rain as something changing her face. So of course I thought and thought about how real and valid her perceptions were and how close her knowing rode to experiences from the natural world. So I fell into his text and into the violet gathering patches of my childhood in West Virginia and away from the years of spraying, consuming, packaging, peeling, refining and defining within our cultural context. It was a lovely trip into feeling. I do so recommend the book.

Book Description
The twentieth century will be remembered as an era of great biomedical discoveries: the development of antibiotics and other lifesaving medications, new insights into the genetic code and the workings of the brain, refined techniques for cloning and organ transplantation. In 1953, when James Watson and Francis Crick identified the shape and composition of the DNA molecule, they transformed the science of genetics; today, with the aid of increasingly sophisticated computers and imaging devices, biomedical science continues to advance at a rapid pace. But many of these discoveries seem mysterious to members of the general public who have never heard of x-ray crystallography or are unfamiliar with the ways that genes and proteins direct the workings of the body. Now, from one of the world's most prestigious medical institutions, this clearly written and richly illustrated volume helps to unravel the mysteries, allowing general readers and students to explore biomedical research and to understand its impact on the fight against human disease.
In his introduction, Philip Leder describes a revolution that "rumbles through every area of biomedicine -- immunology, brain chemistry, parasitology, developmental biology -- granting an intimacy with nature's workings, at a deep, molecular level, once unimaginable." Different sections of the book explore different questions: What can the study of fruit flies or worms tell us about our own genetic makeup? How does a cell "decide" to become male or female? How do our eyes perceive color and movement? How does our immune system work to fight disease, and what happens when the system malfunctions?
Exploring the Biomedical Revolution tells the human stories behind the research. We see the scientists' excitement as they develop magnetic imagery to "spy" on the brain's activity. We see competition and cooperation among scientists who work to develop treatments for Lyme disease, sickle cell anemia, and AIDS. We see some creative problem-solving as one scientist inserts the gene for luciferase, a protein from fireflies, into a strain of tuberculosis--thus producing lab samples that glow in the dark. Throughout, these stories also show the patients' perspective, detailing the symptoms of malaria or cystic fibrosis or showing how the treatment of hemophilia has changed over the years.
Written by leading science writers as a part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's public education mission, this inexpensive book stimulates our imagination with numerous illustrations -- a life-sized diagram of a human brain, a dramatically magnified picture of T-cells attacking a cancer cell, computer-generated depictions of the influenza virus. Several of the sections include fold-out charts, including a colorful yet disturbing montage of the different microbes that threaten our health, and a flow chart that shows how scientists work to battle genetic disease. And with the aid of a stereoscopic viewer (included), the book also provides some striking three-dimensional images--the same computer-generated images that help scientists to understand complex biological structures.
Book Sections:
- Blazing a Genetic Trail
- From Egg to Adult
- Seeing, Hearing, and Smelling the World
- Blood: Bearer of Life and Death
- The Race against Lethal Microbes
- Arousing the Fury of the Immune System
- Finding the Critical Shapes
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous book -- well worth the price.......2005-05-08
This book is a visual delight! It has large, glossy pages replete with beautiful and fascinating photographs and diagrams supporting a variety of interesting articles. Considering the truly extraordinary presentation quality, the price is very reasonable. I suspect HHMI is deliberately asking a modest price in order to increase sales and therefore the number of people who might become interested in the topic -- they do other kinds of outreach to educate/motivate potential scientists. Kudos to them.
Any smart high school student or college undergrad who has had a good experience with a course in biology would probably be delighted by this book.
Absolutely wonderful book!.......2001-02-16
~This book is very well-written, composed of many short (c. 2 pg) articles on various subjects relating to biology/medicine, such as Sickle Cell disorder and Huntington's Disease. Not only are these articles very informative, they are interesting. ~On top of that, there are some really great pictures, including a pull-out poster of deadly microbes. ~The material covered in this book is fascinating, but it's not something that you think about every day (unless you're a biologist or you're really into biomedicine). It stimulates thought, and brings you to the realization that, yes, this is sort of cool. I was somewhat interested in the broad category of biology and medicine, but when I bought this book, I was affirmed in my belief that biomedicine is a remarkably intriguing field of study. ~I would strongly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in biomedicine. It is a truly amazing book! 5 stars!
Focuses on explanations which are easy to understand.......2001-02-15
Exploring the Biomedical Revolution examines the work of frontline scientists and how they are changing the face of modern medicine, with chapters presenting articles on research enhanced by vivid color photos. Many titles on biomedicine are inaccessible to lay audiences; not so this book, which focuses on explanations which are easy to understand, yet with plenty of scientific detail added for those involved in health care. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Schäfer gives a concise overview of the static equilibrium properties of polymer solutions. In the first part diagrammatic perturbation theory is derived from scratch. The second part illustrates the basic ideas of the renormalization group (RG). The crucial role of dilation invariance is stressed. The more efficient method of dimensional regularization and minimal subtractions is worked out in part three. The fourth part contains a unified evaluation of the theory to the one loop level. All the important experimental quantities are discussed in detail, and the results are compared extensively to experiment. Empirical methods of data analysis are critically discussed. The final (fifth) part is devoted to extensions of theory. The first three parts of this book may serve as the basis of a course. Parts four and five are hoped to be useful for detailed quantitative evaluations of experiments.

What a treasure!!.......2005-06-30
Polymer physics is a difficult topic and Flory's pioneering work set the standard for much of the current thinking. However, one of the more challenging tasks Flory faced was grappling with the issue of configurational distributions in the excluded volume limit. Few people understood the importance of excluded volume and Flory dealt with these challenges by taking many simplified routes. Unfortunately, Flory's work was so influential, that few people noticed a quiet revolution that began in Europe and has firmly been established in Germany. Several brilliant folks recognized the connection between problems in phase transitions and the behavior of spin systems near critical points and the behavior of polymers in solution. This led to a revolution that unforunately has never been coherently articulated. The concepts are difficult but they are important because it changes the way we think about polymers. They are quite unlike a collection of small molecules in a box. Thanks to Schaefer, we now have the ability to properly educate ourselves in polymer physics. This is one of the best books I have read in this field. It is full of rich and deep insights and has impacted our thinking of protein folding in more ways than I can count. I wish this book were cheaper and better advertised. Every student of polymer physics should have a copy on his / her desk and read it daily.

Book Description
Karl May's most popular work originally published in 1892 and influenced by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Winnetou is the story of a young Apache chief told by his white friend and blood-brother Old Shatterhand. The action takes place in the U.S. Southwest, in the latter half of the 1800s, where the Indian way of life is threatened by the first transcontinental railroad. Winnetou, the only Native Indian chief who could have united the various rival tribes to reach a settlement with the whites, is murdered. His tragic death foreshadows the death of his people. May's central theme here, as in much of his work, is the relationship between aggression, racism, and religious intolerance.

A great story about friendship, ethics, optimism and courage.......2007-04-20
A mix of Old Shatterhand and Winnetou has become my raw model after reading this books many years ago (I was 10 then, I am 50 now). The values I have learned have guided my life since. They have been the foundation for my views of North America, and have been a moral support through my multiple escapes from the agents of a dictatorial regime during the darkest period of a pseudo-Communist era. While being in jail and breaking out, while having a loaded handgun pointed at my head, while fighting for my freedom, I was both Old Shatterhand and Winnetou.
The book is idealized and sometimes unfair towards the Yankee pioneer. However, maybe because of that, the message is easy to grasp for a wide range of readers - respect for difference, an ethical struggle to be the best one can be in a multi-cultural environment. It is easy to do mistakes when you are a pioneer (the first one to do something - be it hunting, farming, nation-forming or whatever other challenges our minds can invent), the essence of it is to learn what is wrong and correct it.
I am writing this review before reading the English translation offered by Amazon. As other reviewers have mentioned, the translation I read had over 1000 pages that contained, in addition to the action, great descriptions of the Apache territories and landscape. It is Karl May's geniality in describing so vividly and so close to reality the geographical context of his adventures without being there ever. I am ordering the book and will look forward to a more complete translation.
And yes, after escaping, I did get to ride horses, wear a Colt, sleep in the wild with my knife close by and fire a carbine and, most importantly, have friends I can rely on with my life.
Winnetou--A Nice Story.......2007-01-09
This is an excellent translation of the classic German work by Karl May. It tells the story of a young indian chief through the eyes of his "white" friend. It is a story of courage, ethics, and the importance of always giving your best to tasks and challenges. Another part of the beauty of it is that it was written in its entirety by a German man, who to that date had never been to the United States or even seen a Native American. Very impressive.
A Great Read.......2006-07-24
It is hard to believe that Karl May, a German who never stepped foot in the U.S., could capture the old West as well as he did. Winnetou is a terrific tale of the evolution of a "greenhorn" as he becomes a man of the west and befriends a great indian chief. I would, and have, recommend this book to everyone.
Winnetou.......2006-01-14
I'm born of West Indian parents, lived in Germany from age 3 to 12, and at that tender age, I naturally spoke fluent German, but I have never been back since 1967 - I'm almost 50 now! But I'll always remember my love affair with the Winnetou series by Karl May. I remember spending countless days and nights inhaling novel after novel. Our next door neighbor's kid had a huge, leather-bound collection and happily shared it with me. My German is now beyond rusty, and I've been looking for English translations of these wonderful books, and was very happy to come across this one. I wish I could get more Americans turned onto these books - but, although the translated version was very satisfying after so many decades of being deprived, I'm fairly certain that the work suffered somewhat in the translation. But I'm not complaining at all. I'll just have to re-ignite my German comprehension skills and read the real thing again. My 5-star rating is probably borne of nostalgia, but I'm not retracting it!

Later, when Old Shatterhand rescues a young boy from a disastrous oil fire in New Venango his heroic deed has far-reaching implications. The blood brothers cross paths again in Nebraska where they and Old Firehand must face the cruel white Indian chief Parranoh.

Book Description
When he had heard all there was to learn of me he bowed his head, saying: "You are at the beginning of the conflict which I am ending, but you need not fear. You have the good God with you who will never forsake you. It was otherwise with me. I had lost my God when I left home, or rather was driven from it, and instead of the staff of strong faith I took with me the worst companion a man can have--a bad conscience."

Customer Reviews:
Just as I remembered.......2007-06-13
I was 15 years old in Hungary when I read the Karl May's stories of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. What a great nostalgic experience it was to read them again, this time in english, over 50 years later.
wholesome, fabulous read.......2006-12-18
I read most of Karl May's stories as a child. They were at that time translated into Czech. The stories are everything you could ask for. There is adventure, mystery, etc. You name it and it's in there. Deep down there are also non-assuming messages on how to be a good person. These books shaped my views on bigotry in a way no speech or lesson ever could have.

Book Description
The aged Karl May and his wife receive invitations from Indian friends and foes in America, to participate in the decision making on a monument to Winnetou. May steps into Old Shatterhand's shoes one last time, and when they arrive at the Indians' gravesites, Old Shatterhand excavates Winnetou's long-lost legacy. In the meantime two opposing groups of Indians are gathering at the proposed location of the monument. Covertly, a large group of enemy warriors approaches through an extensive cave complex to attack, but natural events intervene. A geological catastrophe provides for an unexpected turn of events.
