life changing.......2007-10-10
This book it truely incredible. It will make your re-evaluate your life and the way you live it. I think everyone should read this book at least once, if not once every year, just to get grounded again. A definate must buy!
This is the way to do do business.......2007-01-19
I am thrilled with how fast the book arrived and the excellent condition it is in. Will definitely buy from this seller again.
Tom Brown's "The Vision..." doesn't disappoint.......2006-07-16
As a long time Tom Brown fan, The Vision: The Dramatic True Story of One Man's Search for Enlightenment, keeps with the spirit of the previous works I have read. It is my feeling the author has a true message he wishes to impart on our society, one that leads to a better understanding of our relationship with nature and life itself.
This book delves into the author's message of a return to a intimate relation with nature and putting our lives on a natural path of harmony with the planet on which we live and must share with all living entities.
You will not be disappointed in the message, and the paths opened leading one to a better understanding of the way to achieve these goals. I highly recommend this work to anyone seeking these truths.
Completely Amazing.......2000-06-27
This book is simply incredible. Having read "Grandfather" and "The Tracker" before this book, I found myself on an incredible journey through the Vision Quest. I found that it deepened my desire to do as Tom Brown, Jr. has done. The Vision Quest in the cave towards the end was absolutely amazing. It is probably best to read at least "The Tracker" before this one, but it's not totally necessary. A must read at any rate.
Worth Re-reading.......2000-03-13
I have read this book twice now, I enjoyed and learnt it both times. Better the the previous two books, in 'The Vision' Tom goes deeper into his personal spirituality. The book takes you through many of Tom's life lessons building nicely into where the later books will take you. It is the kind of book where you will find something covered which will add insight to your current life circumstances.

A historical review of famous unsolved cases.......2007-03-29
Mysterious Persons in History is more than just a review of the facts of famous unsolved cases, it is a book that stretches the capacity of the reader to think critcically. I like the Mysterious Persons book's way of simply stating facts, while building into the narration challenging issues of credibility, bias, incongruity and accuracy. Author Fred Neff's book does not take traditional versions of history as true, but rather gives little known facts and alternative explanations for the reader to ponder and factor in to making their own decision. Obviously no author can give a simple formula to use to solve a mystery; if that was so these cases would not be unsolved mysteries because there would be a clear concensus of opinion as to their solution based upon a common method of resolution. What Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff has done is to use his book as an instrument to challenge the reader's mind to bring out the best of their individual thinking processes to find a solution. The mysteries selected by lawyer Fred Neff involve Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper, Sir Harry Oaks, Napoleon Bonaparte, Dr. Sam Sheppard, William Taylor, The Black Dahlia and John Dillenger. The chapter on Jack the Ripper was particularly intriguing to me since I have had an interest in Jack The Ripper for many years. Although I have read several books on the subject before reading the chapter devoted to the Ripper in lawyer Fred Neff's book, no other writing made me want to explore the forensic aspects of the case to find a personal solution to the crime. For example, Mysterious Persons in History gives the best narration of the Jack the Ripper murders I have ever read; unlike writings by other authors who supplied spoon-fed answers that left me dissatisfied with their conclusions, attorney Fred Neff provided both commonly known and little known facts along with challenging questions that prompted me to try to come up with my own personal solution to the mystery. The writing style employed in Mysterious Persons is unique in that author Fred Neff, who is a lawyer in Minnesota, uses a blend of the socratic method with good old fashioned common sense to explore the mysteries. That the book is written by Fred Neff, an experienced trial lawyer in Minnesota who has received many awards for his outstanding contributions such as the city of St. Paul Citizen of the Month award, commendation from the Sibley County Attorney's Office, WCCO Good Neighbor Award, the HLS Justice Award, Lamp of Knowledge Award from the Twin Cities Lawyers Guild and Presidential Medal of Merit Award, is a definite bonus. Lawyer Fred Neff provides a presentation of historical facts in an intriguingly different manner that is different from the ordinary recitation of facts so often seen. The Mysterious Persons In History book is not only interesting to adults like me, but has the potential to be a very useful tool to help develop young peoples' critical thinking skills. From my perspective Mysterious Persons is truly a great book.
Highly recommended.......2004-12-10
I enjoyed this book very much and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in mysterious people and events. The book's style is readable, interesting and entertaining. The topics selected and the very readable format makes it a great book to encourage the "reluctant" reader. Both of my children enjoyed the book and are interested in finding out more about the people and the mysteries discussed in the book.
A good intro to true crime and critical thinking.......2002-01-11
This book on famous unsolved murder cases (which is primarily for a junior high school/high school-aged audience) was written by an accomplished attorney, educator and Presidential Merit Award winner. This 107-page volume is very good for a number of reasons: i) it teaches issue-spotting, critical thinking and analytical writing by example, ii) it deals with complex issues in language a teenager can follow, iii) it deals with sometimes sordid topics in tasteful, nonsalacious language and iv) it contains a detailed bibliography and will likely excite some curiousity in its readers for further study.
Treat for Detective Fans.......2001-05-25
Fans of detective stories will love Mysterious Persons in History that explores controversial unsolved mysteries such as Jack the Ripper, Harry Oaks, Lizzie Borden, Napoleon and others. Each person is covered in a separate chapter where fascinating facts and questions related to this person are explored. The reader gets a chance to ponder and resolve each of these cases. It is great fun to work with the facts supplied to solve these time tested mysteries. Mysterious Persons is a terrific way to learn history and practice problem solving at the same time as enjoying true life mystery cases.
Great book-really captures the imagination.......2001-05-23
Take a look back in time and examine eight of the greater unsolved mysteries by reading Mysterious Persons in History by Fred Neff. There are stories on Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper, Sir Harry Oaks, Napoleon Bonaparte, Dr. Sam Shepard, William Taylor, The Black Dahlia and John Dillenger. Each of these stories is simply put a gem. This book really captures the readers attention with its well written and interesting approach to not only learning the facts that are involved in each mystery, but the questions that remain unanswered. The reader really gets involved in each of the eight mysteries just as though he was a detective solving the mystery. The book is wonderful!

Book Description
Aseptic Processing and Packaging of Food explains how aseptic processing and packaging first began and traces its fascinating progression over the last fifty years. It explores current technologies, discusses why they are used today, and explains why certain basic approaches to critical operations, such as pumping, heat exchange, fluid flow, and controls, must be applied. Commercially used heating and holding concepts are also explained, with emphasis on avoiding problems. This unique book states the technique and method of choice for accurate flow control (timing). It includes an explanation of secondary flow and describes its use to solve many of the heat exchange and fluid flow problems associated with particle-containing products. It also discusses the manufacturers of aseptic packaging equipment, exploring the types of products they produce and the advantages and disadvantages of their product design. Aseptic Processing and Packaging of Food fills in many of the information gaps left by other sources - a must-have reference for anyone working in this area.

Book Description
Even though Ivan Goncharov wrote several books that were widely read and discussed during his lifetime, today he is remembered for one novel, Oblomov, published in 1859, an indisputable classic of Russian literature, the artistic stature and cultural significance of which may be compared only to other such masterpieces as Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls, Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, and Fyodor Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov. Stephen Pearl's new translation, the first major English-language publication of Oblomov in more than fifty years, succeeds exquisitely to introduce this astonishing and endearing novel to a new generation of readers.
Customer Reviews:
Eats shoots and translates.......2006-11-11
You are best off buying the old Magarshack translation, published by Penguin Classics.
The new Pearl translation contains so many unnecessary typographical errors--comma disease, carriage returns that insert white lines in the middle of paragraphs more than once, quotation marks regularly lost track of--that the edition is too broken to use with pleasure.
Stylistically Pearl's done something different from Magarshack, "updating" the old-feeling language. This sometimes works well in dialogues between characters, but not so much in the voice of the narrator, in my opinion.
Beautiful Loser.......2006-10-26
A difficult book to review, this, due to the fact that everything hinges upon how the reader feels about...Oblomov! I, for one, agree that he is a sympathetic, tragic figure, a fellow one couldn't help but liking if you met in person. But, then, what of this traditional political take on Oblomov, which Lenin begin in his speeches, of accusing the Tsarist state and its lackeys of Oblomovism (an English word now, as well as Russian), thereby somehow appropriating the book as an attack on that society, and Oblomov himself as its most decadent symbol? For my part, I don't think we should make too much of it, like all political appropriations of the literary, it oversimplifies and makes a stick figure out of a complex character. But, some will ask, oversimplifying again, that if Oblomov is not a symbol of decadence, is he then a heroic symbol of times swept into oblivion, an indictment, as Wordsworth puts it, of "getting and spending" by which "we lay waste our powers"?
I would say, again, that both are oversimplifications. But I would posit, after finishing the book, and spending a certain amount of time, very much a la Oblomov, contemplating this figure, that the latter view is nearer the mark. Oblomov is the dreamy, poet in all of us who would rather lie under Shakespeare's Greenwood Tree, who "doth ambition shun", who would not be bothered with, to switch plays, the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.
In all the above I am, for the most part, in agreement with the other reviewers. What I am in (very strong) disagreement with them about is the love between Olga and Oblomov, which one reviewer describes as "long-winded" and another as "adolescent". I suppose both reviewers would say the same thing of Henry James, whose writing this part of the novel most resembles. It is only here that the Goncharov's writing approaches high art. If one is going to dismiss this section as "adolescent" or "long-winded", one might as well toss Henry James, Pushkin, Shelley, Keats, and every other Romantic poet or writer into the rubbish bin with it. And I ask these reviewers, where would the novel be without it? --- It would be a comedy rather than a tragedy (or tragicomedy). It would lack all depth. We would know nothing of Oblomov's splendid soul. It wouldn't be regarded as literature, and we wouldn't be reading it today.
Well, I've said enough. You will enjoy this book and take to Oblomov if you have a bit of the poet in you, if you have a soft spot for what Canadian poet/songwriter Leonard Cohen calls the "Beautiful Loser", or if you simply admire someone who would rather nap than deal with the world.
I'll let Oblomov have the last word about what he is: "Yes, a poet in life, because life is poetry. People are free to distort it if they like!"
Fantastic!! Great stuff!! "THE" picture of apathy.......2005-06-07
Goncharev tells the tale of a Russian gentleman, who has given up and resorted to slothfulness. An old friend comes to visit appaled at his condition, and is unaware of some other people who come by to take advantage of him. His friend tries to convince him to (if anything) get out of bed! Oblomov ends up in a chance meeting with a woman, and it might bring him the motivation he needs to get up and perhaps live his life.
Everyone can "relate" to Oblomov in this tale, the picture painted of the cobwebs in the hall, the powerless to care of what is going, can hit us all at some time. That is what really makes this book so great, you get a fantastic sense of feeling for the main character.
Secondly the novel turns into a love story but it does not go into overt sappyness, and actually bounces back and forth toying with the participants. I got an amazing sense of wanting to know what would happen to the characters in this book, you really feel for them, and Oblomov's pain in dealing with it.
Finally Goncharev does not go for a simple neatly wrapped up ending. Any other book would have been but the author was much smarter than that. With the last sentence I closed this book feeling I truly lived the life of these people. That's when I knew I read a fantastic book.
I only deduct one star (and somewhat grudgingly I might add), for just a "little" bit of overwordyness with the prose between the two lovers. Other than that, hey... I can't wait to read this again sometime!
Oblomov.......2004-11-15
Oblomov is a lazy man. He is a reasonably well off - but not rich - Russian aristocrat, enjoying the labour that his three hundred serfs provide, but not really aware of either the scope of his holdings, or exactly what it takes for the town of Oblomovka to produce the thousands of roubles he is provided with each year. Once an energetic young man, ready to change the word with ideas and action, he has faded into a fat, lazy slob.
He has a very few friends. All but one of these friends visit Oblomov to leech money and food from him, and he happily allows it because he knows there will always be more. They sit around all day talking of nothing, or sleeping, or eating. That has been their life, thanks to the hard work of Oblomov's serfs, for the past decade. Oblomov's only useful friend, Stolz, tries desperately to coax him back into the real world, attempting to interest him in plays, opera, socialisation, anything at all. But Oblomov is not interested, content to while away his life inside his dirty rooms, eating and sleeping, sleeping and eating.
And yet, Oblomov is a sympathetic character. Perhaps this is because we have all had feelings of laziness, we have always questioned the reasons for living an active, energetic life. Oblomov reasons that a man could spend thirty years working hard to provide himself ease and comfort in his old age, or he could simply begin the ease and comfort now, when he is a young man. He internalises at great lengths over the path he has chosen, and surprisingly, his ideas and choices seem valid. Perhaps not something an ordinary person could choose - we don't all have peasants and villages in our name - but if we did, why not? Why not choose a life of easy living, of good meals and (arguably) good company?
Soon into the story, Oblomov is dealt the twin blows of having to move from his apartments, and finding out that his village is no longer providing the level of money he is used to. Here he shows his true colours, seemingly unable to act, unable to do much of anything. He puts the signing of papers and the writing of letters off until tomorrow, always tomorrow, and it is almost too late when Stolz saves the day. He implores Oblomov, telling him that his current lifestyle is unhealthy, and that he will be dead within the decade if he continues such activities - or rather, no activities at all.
It it not Stolz who awakens him from his slumber. No, he meets a young woman, Olga, and falls in love. To be honest, when this thread of the novel began, I wasn't too impressed. It seemed as though the moral of the story would be that love conquers all, an answer that I did not think would be within Oblomov's character. Thankfully, Goncharov did not use this easy solution, instead keeping Oblomov true to himself. The results are sad, but satisfactorily inevitable.
Throughout the novel, Goncharov introduces various side plots to illustrate how easy it is to take advantage of an idle aristocrat who has simply no idea of his own finances. The text makes it seem as though most of the nobility had no real concept of what is involved in getting from fallow earth to grown wheat to money in their hand. Oblomov comes across as the 'ultimate' aristocrat, one so removed from the reality in which he exists that he does not, for all intents and purposes, have any reality at all. Were Oblomov to suddenly die one day, his serfs would never know, his family are dead already, and his leeching friends would simply move on to another fool. As the perfect man of culture, Oblomov has nothing at all.
Towards the end of the novel, events become rushed, with years being skipped with almost every paragraph. But this serves to heighten the point Goncharov is trying to make. Oblomov's life is seen to be as ineffectual as possible, and even when he does make some small changes, the ripples quickly fade away. After his love affair is over, Oblomov considers his way of life validated, sinking even further into the stupor he had been carefully cultivating for years.
There are moments of humour within the novel. Oblomov's servant, Zakhar, is as pathetic as his master, and the interactions between the two are quite hilarious at times. Similarly, the scenes of love between Oblomov and Olga are touching, and accurately capture the naive adolescent love that everyone endures, only realising after the fact how ignorant those feelings really were. Almost all of the characters are very well done, with the possible exception of Stolz, who, as Goncharov himself said, is 'too good to be true', 'the idea peeping through him too nakedly'. He is, however, still an interesting enough character, but the times when the narration turns to him are admittedly weaker than when on any other character.
In the end, Oblomov is an interesting look at Russian aristocracy in the 19th century. While some elements are obviously caricatured, and Oblomov himself is - almost - too pathetic and oblivious to believe, the novel is definitely worth a look.
a warning against laziness.......2003-04-07
oblomov is a guy who never quite manages to do anything. he has great difficulties managing to do anything. finally a friend manages to convince Oblomov that he must be active, otherwise he will never escape his laziness. the psychology in the story is great. the plot is always simple, perhaps too slowly progressing. there is much humour in this book. the characters are truly believable.
