I checked this book out of the library several years ago and could not put it down. I felt drawn to these animals as much as he was. I am a licensed massage therapist, but want to work more with animals. They have so much to give and teach us. I highly recommend this book.

Anthony Gugliemo is the "Dr Doolittle" of the twenty-second century!
I had initially purchased the book because Anthony was going to be my new massage therapist. However, I've always loved animals, adopting dogs from local rescue organizations ; cats always coming to me to be petted, even snakes like me! So, I purchased the book, and on my first visit to Anthony I asked him to sign it. After I got home, I read it from cover to cover in one day, I JUST could not put it down. Animals have that sixth sense regarding humans who are guardian angels. I am sure that Mambo, Rudy (the penguin), Champ, Talon(the dolphin), and all other animals that he has touched (not just their bodies but their souls) will always remember Anthony.

Puzzled.......2001-09-27
This is a really good read. The stories are interesting and well told, of a pioneer in alternative medicine for animals! I'm from a traditionalist medical background, so am a skeptic; but his techniques and results are quite believable and worth revisiting, even if I don't follow his rationale at all times. I was a little puzzled by the book's abrupt ending, as though some pages got lost on the way to the printer's. But it's a very good book, one I'll recommend.

I am a fan of action novels, so when my wife handed me a copy of "The Walrus on My Table" I was unsure whether to read the book or not. After a couple of days I took the plunge. I'm sure glad I did. Cari Lynn's narrative of Anthony Guglielmo's endeavor into animal massage is a pleasureful and enjoyable read. The juxtaposition of human versus animal massage together with not all together well known tidbits about walruses, whales, horses, penguins, dolphins, and sharks was interesting and informative. Cari Lynn's writing style well paced and intelligent. This collection of stories invoked thoughts into the magic of a good massage and made me wishing for a good one.

The fur trade and labor relations.......2007-05-13
This book is a scholarly treatment of the French and later British/French-Canadian fur trade in the northern tier of North America. It looks at the fur trade from the perspective of labor relations, and clearly identifies the differences in class, culture, and power that were common to the 18th and 19th century especially in connection with the North American fur trade. The author covers the ground thoroughly, and readers will come away having learned a great deal. As a scholarly writer, it seemed to me, however, that Podruchny was sometimes trying too hard to make the mundane seem interesting, or to draw conclusions that were just slightly strained. Overall a well-done presentation of the British fur trade from a new perspective, and a valuable recent addition to the literature about this part of North American history.

The text includes a presentation of the measure-valued branching processes also called superprocesses and of their basic properties. In the important quadratic branching case, the path-valued process known as the Brownian snake is used to give a concrete and powerful representation of superprocesses. This representation is applied to several connections with a class of semilinear partial differential equations. On the one hand, these connections give insight into properties of superprocesses. On the other hand, the probabilistic point of view sometimes leads to new analytic results, concerning for instance the trace classification of positive solutions in a smooth domain. An important tool is the analysis of random trees coded by linear Brownian motion. This includes the so-called continuum random tree and leads to the fractal random measure known as ISE, which has appeared recently in several limit theorems for models of statistical mechanics. This book is intended for postgraduate students and researchers in probability theory. It will also be of interest to mathematical physicists or specialists of PDE who want to learn about probabilistic methods. No prerequisites are assumed except for some familiarity with Brownian motion and the basic facts of the theory of stochastic processes. Although the text includes no new results, simplified versions of existing proofs are provided in several instances.

Go to the poetry section of any major bookstore and you will find numerous versions of Rilke's profound and captivating Sonnets to Orpheus, plus many other volumes of his. Besides Dante, Neruda, García Lorca and Rumi, he is one of the world poets most translated into English. Many good versions have been produced and I have bought and enjoyed reading most of them in the past, except some of the earlier, more crabbed versions from last century. The version I remember liking the most was David Young's, which, unfortunately, I do not have at hand for comparison. Since I don't know German and can't access the original, which must be a marvel, I have to trust my instincts concerning an English version, and my instincts tell me to trust Willis Barnstone, one of our foremost translators.
This new volume, published by Shambala, includes a revision of Mr. Barnstone's earlier translation of the Sonnets published in To Touch the Sky, by New Directions Press, 1999. Mr. Barnstone has not made any major changes to that earlier translation, which still reads quite smoothly, though he has gone through and made important fine-tunings which give some poems more fluency at certain points than they previously possessed. These changes may not seem important or even that noticeable to the general reader, but they are to the translator and to the more specialized reader. Translation, especially literary translation, is always a work in progress, unless abandoned by the translator. Fortunately, Mr. Barnstone chose not to abandon this work yet, and so we have a newer, brighter version of the Sonnets to enjoy.
Another benefit of this volume is the extensive, generous and compassionate introduction. Mr. Barnstone has over the years become a master of the introductory essay, besides being a master translator and poet. The introduction in this volume is the best I've read to date about Rilke. Other introductions have been excellent and informative, but this one provides the most lucid overall picture of Rilke, his life and his art that I can imagine short of reading some of the book-length biographies Mr. Barnstone used as resources.
For those interested in the art of translation, a small essay about the tradition of translating the Sonnets in English follows the Introduction. Initially, Mr. Barnstone generously acknowledges the fine work done in the past, starting with J.B. Leishman in 1936 and C.F. MacIntrye in 1940--those earlier "crabbed" versions I mention above--which makes me want to seek them out again, if only to understand where they have been successful. He then goes on to explain his approach: making the "literal literary." This is vastly more difficult than it sounds, and calls for a craftsman of profound skill and experience. To be literal, but unmusical, which is what I understand Mr. Barnstone to mean when he uses the term "literalistic," is to deprive the reader of the poem, though it may give a more accurate understanding of the "meanings" of the words. As Mr. Barnstone points out, when translating poetry, one must attempt the impossible: to make the translation sing in the target language while staying as accurate as possible to the original. It is an impossible task--a quixotic task, to say the least--,especially when attempting to approximate original meter and rhyme scheme, but like many attempts at the impossible, it can at times yield felicitous results, and one of these is Mr. Barnstone's Sonnets to Orpheus. If you or one of your poetry-loving friends haven't encountered this amazing, multi-layered and influential book yet, Mr. Barnstone's volume makes an excellent starting point. If you have read other translations, this one will serve to either re-kindle your interest or inspire you to do some comparison reading yourself. In any event, your money will have been well spent and you will, hopefully, find your psyche enriched by this masterful version of Rilke's ponderings on the joy, anguish and mystery of being human.

Because the sonnets were written only four years before Rilke's death, they belong properly to his final and philosophic period, and offer a sharp and striking contrast to the less mystical Das Buch der Bilder and Neue Gedichte.
Rainer Maria Rilke was one of Germany's most important poets. His influences include the paintings of the Worpswedders and the French Impressionists, the sculpture of Rodin (to whom he was both friend and secretary), and the poetry of Baudelaire, Verlaine, Mallarmé, and other symbolists. His poetry is innovative, enigmatic, and entertainingly idiosyncratic. C.F. MacIntyre's translations are both true to the original and poetic in their own right, and in each book he includes an introduction and notes. German text faces the English translation.

Best translation of the alluring Sonnets to Orpheus.......2001-07-08
The Sonnets to Orpheus was written by Rilke over a few days' period during his winter visit to Switzerland. It came to form almost magically, "with no doubts in any of the words" in Rilke's introduction.
The Sonnets tell the classical Greek tragedy of Orpheus, who with his gift of music on the lyre charmed death to give his love back from the underworld, only to lose her forever when he broke his promise and looked back to see if she was still with him.
This work is considered an interesting development in German poetry because of its improvisational creativity of the author, and is difficult to translate because of the liberties taken in the writing. In my opinion this translation is best one to date: in contrast to the popular translation by M. D. Herter Norton, which strived for accuracy at the cost of eloquence.
Charming, entertaining, bittersweet, and always the contradiction between optimism and tragedy in a fatalistic touch, this is one of my favourite literary work to date.
