Patagonia: Wild Land at the End of the Earth
ASIN: 0810943522 |
Book Description
"Jasmine Rossi's photographs of Patagonia's coastal wild animals and seascapes are both beautiful and shocking. She portrays its cycles of birth and death and of storm and calm with rare technical skill and a text that enlarges her photographic windows with unusual accuracy."
-William Conway, in the Foreword Patagonia, the vast remote region at the southernmost tip of South America, is one of the last truly wild places on this planet. The natural habitat of hundreds of wild species-from killer whales and elephant seals to penguins and albatrosses-it is one of the world's great showcases of wildlife. For two years, photojournalist Jasmine Rossi lived on the Valds Peninsula, the center of this coastal life zone, along with a handful of wildlife biologists, and she photographed the animals interacting in ways never before documented. Rossi's astonishing images and spine-tingling first-person accounts of her adventures provide a unique window on the life-and-death struggles faced daily on Patagonia's rugged shores and ferocious seas. JASMINE ROSSI is an independent wildlife photographer and nature writer living in New York City. WILLIAM CONWAY was for 40 years general director of the Wildlife Conservation Society (formerly the New York Zoological Society). He makes annual trips to Patagonia to photograph and study wildlife. 205 photographs in full color, 113/4 x 93/8"

More Than a Picture Book.......2006-08-23
In most coffee table books about wildlife, the text serves a minor role compared to the photographs. Reading this book, I was delighted to find that Jasmine Rossi, a talented amateur with no previous books to her credit, actually wrote a fascinating set of portraits of the birds and mammals of the Valdes Peninsula and Punta del Tombo in the State of Chubut, Argentina.
As this area is now one of the major eco-tourist destinations in all of Latin America, this book was badly needed. Graham Harris's A GUIDE TO THE BIRDS AND MAMMALS OF COASTAL PATAGONIA is hard to find and is considerably more dry.
Although she skimps a bit on the bird life, Rossi wrote a wonderful chapter on the Magellanic Penguins which obviously owed a lot to close observation. Particularly affecting was the story of a penguin couple whom she names José and Maria who hatch two eggs. The chick born first grows more quickly and has better access to food, forcing his younger and smaller sibling to attempt to steal food from an adjoining couple, at which point the interloper is pecked to death by the offended mother.
Other particularly detailed chapters deal with the whales, sea lions, elephant seals, and orcas that make the peninsula their home. Also of interest is the last chapter, in which the author describes her experiences in the writing of this book.
This book provides not only a superb set of photographs of Patagonian wildlife, but vignettes on their behavior, breeding habits, enemies, and the toll, if any, that human tourism takes on the species.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in the subject.
Beauty never looked so wild...........2002-10-28
Patagonia. The name always meant mystery and
romance to me: a remote, little-peopled area
south of civilization, beyond the reaches of
normal travel routes; a place where nature
still exists without statues and monuments
and histories of kings and great empires.
After reading Jasmine Rossi's picture book of
the area, the mystery of Patagonia has been
revealed, but the romance continues. My eyes
enjoyed a feast of nature as I made my way
through the book. I had difficulty reading
this straight through because I kept wanting
to shower my mind with the beauty and sheer
rawness of the photographs, and I kept
flipping through to discover what else
Ms. Rossi was witness to in the wild.
As hard as it was, I did read through the
book sequentially, and I appreciated how
well-organized the book turned out to
be. Each major creature had its own section,
starting with the peaceful, friendly southern
right whale, then the awesome and terrible
orca, then the seals and dolphins, penguins
and flight birds, and small land animals.
After each section I could close my eyes and
still see and understand these marvelous
animals. I could do this because Ms. Rossi
included not only understandable descriptions
but also descriptions of how she felt, for
example, when she first encountered a right
whale in the water, or when she tried to
photograph dusky dolphins.
Animals of the sea have always fascinated me,
but Ms. Rossi took me on a land trip and
showed me many other curious animals, some
familiar, like the skunk, but others
completely unknown until this book, like
Darwin's Rhea.
My favorite tidbit about the book is that
Jasmine Rossi is not a professional marine
biologist who spent years among her objects
of study; she was simply an observer with a
camera and notebook. Who says that great
discoveries are of the past of Magellan and
Darwin?
I may not ever get to visit Patagonia, but
when I'm sipping a hot drink on a cold winter
day, I can pull out the book, look at the
pictures, and take a trip to a land far away
down under.
The Wild Shores of Patagonia.......2000-12-07
Really nice. Wonderfull picture, interesting information mixed with personal experiencies from the author

Revolutionary War "Lite".......2007-02-02
This slim volume (31 pages) skims through some of the major battles of the Revolutionary War, placing each on a timeline that runs along the bottom of every page. Accounts include "After Action Reports" that name the military leaders on each side, the troop strength, the casualties and the outcome (defeat or victory). Liberal use of maps, key terms highlighted throughout, and additional tidbits thrown in here and there under the heading of "Town Crier News". Somewhat cavalier about the numbers and the loss of life they represent for my taste - they seem to be presented almost like sports scores. Definitely a "go along" or introductory text, not enough material presented for in depth study.
Book Description
The concept of the farmer and shopkeeper pulling rifles off pegs on the wall to fight the British has been the typical image of the American minuteman. The fact that he may have had military training and drilled—and that April 19, 1775 was not his first battle—usually goes unmentioned. Winner of the American Revolution Round Table Award, The Minute Men will be of keen interest to those curious about the true history of some of America’s first soldiers.

The complete description of the battles of Lexington & Concord.......2007-07-04
When George the 3rd decided to impose tyranny upon the American Colonies, one of the many things he did was to begin dismantling the existential threat to his rule: the local militia system. General John Galvin, US Army, Retired, has done a wonderful job of describing not only the Special Forces units of that militia - the Minute Men - but also the first battle of the American Revolution, the 20-mile running ambush called Lexington & Concord.
The self-defense system of the colonial period was composed of two parts: the general militia, which could be considered regular troops, and the Minute Men, a special force of militia ready at a minute's notice and specially trained for rapid response, assault, and communication - much like today's Special Forces. Much of the battle on April 19, 1775 was fought by Minute Men, and it was they who fired the first American shots at the Concord Bridge.
Gen. Galvin spends a few chapters describing the evolution of the minute man concept - a council of war, ready at a minute's warning, with a decentralized command structure and integrated communications system, then proceeds into a detailed description of the battle. Despite their lack of technology, Minute Men were extremely adept at what they trained for, and highly capable - even if their enemy did not think of them as such. This difference in attitude is particularly well described, as Galvin shows not only that it takes training and equipment to be an effective soldier, but attitude as well. The Americans had the attitude of soldiers preparing for war, while the British Redcoats had an attitude of contempt towards their enemy's supposed inferiority.
Fred, of Fred's M14 Stocks, is fond of saying that April 19th, 1775 was the date when "marksmanship met history, and liberty was born". While this is true (the Americans were much better shots than the Redcoats) there were other aspects of the battle that played perfectly into the hands of the Americans. For instance, the British suffered not only from disunited command throughout the day, but also allowed the Americans time to assemble, reinforce, and prepare ambushes. Galvin's description of the battle is extremely detailed, omitting nothing.
For some reason, I wrote a lot of marginalia in this book, something I'm not prone to do. The text lends itself to that, with it's short and succinct chapters, well summarized ending paragraphs, and easy readability. A war college could easily adopt this as a text for a specialized class on tactics, or general study of the battles of the Revolution. If your interests cover either, you should pick this up, for it is well worth your time.
A Tremendously Good Read!.......2006-12-22
John Galvin's "The Minute Men" is a well researched, well written, and an extremely interesting and important work on the American Revolution.
In his book, Galvin, a soldier of distinction (he retired as a four-star general, having served as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe), a historian, and a native of Massachusetts debunks a number of myths surrounding the New England Minutemen. He shows that both the Minute Man concept and the alarm systems that mustered more than 14,000 men, who, marching and fighting in companies and regiments, defeated a British column of some 1,000 men at Lexington and Concord, were deeply embedded in Colonial history and culture.
The authors makes a strong case that the Minute Men were better led and more experienced than their British counterparts, many of them having served in the Seven Years War alongside the British, against the French and their Indian allies.
In comparison, most of the British soldiers, despite the long history of their regiments, were either new recruits or had never seen combat before. The fact that the first American volley at Concord bridge sent a British company there into headlong flight, stunning their officers, is proof of the inexperience of the red coated regulars.
After Lexington and Concord, British intelligence showed that the New England colonies alone could put some 30,000 men in the field of combat, without affecting the farming ability of the colonies. By the end of the Revolutionary War, Massachusetts alone had contributed some 26 of the 80 regiments raised for the Continental Army. And the small Colony contributed more than 620 private fighting ships to the American cause.
"Minute Men" is an easy and fun read and ranks among the top ten books on the American Revolution. Anyone interested in the beginnings of American independence should start here.
One of the Best.......2006-11-29
I am an admitted history nut of the American Colonial/Revolutionary period and have at least a couple dozen books on the period and this is one of the best. The writer is a career high ranking military member and brings a different slant to the story of the minute men and their place in our country's history. He looks deeply into their origins and their history leading up to and through the battles of Lexington and Concord. If you are going to read only one book on this subject this is the one.
The History behind "Patriot's Day".......2006-03-16
The Minute Men, by Major John R. Galvin
The "embattled farmers" of Concord and Lexington were part of a vast colonial army with a long tradition of organization and training going back to the early 17th century as defenders against Indian attacks. Most of this book is about "the shot heard round the world" on April 19, 1775. The 'Prologue' says a lot of legends and anecdotes have obscured the reality. The Minute Men and militia were well organized, commanded, and controlled from nearly constant warfare over 140 years. The militia system was changed to meet varying conditions (p.13). Minute Men were drawn from the militia, trained and equipped to assemble rapidly for combat (p.14). This concept was adopted by the other colonies (p.15). Chapter 1 tells how the needs of the times created changes in the Colonial militia (pp.21-22). The Indian wars fostered cooperation between the towns (Chapter 2). The end of King Philip's War was followed by 80 years of intermittent warfare (p.31). A bounty was paid for every Indian scalp (p.33); they were vulnerable in winter times but not defenseless (p.35). This training and experience would be needed in the future (Chapter 3). Chapter 4 discusses some of the events in the French and Indian War.
The conquest of Canada saw the Colonies turning to discuss politics and their right of self-governance (p.49). There was a list of common grievances (p.50). Ministers took the lead in opposition to British policies (p.53). The closing of Boston port and the massive attack on the old charter lead to a change in political opinion among the people (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 tells of the demonstration at Worcester against the Intolerable Acts; it show how united the Colonists were in defense of their rights. This led to the new militia system: all officers chosen by the people in each regiment; one-third of the men ready to act at a minute's warning (pp.64-65). Resistance grew in the fall of 1774. Chapter 7 describes how this new militia was adopted (p.71). The adoption of elected officers led to an improved sense of involvement and responsibility, and the elimination of Crown loyalists. Weapon handling was more important than parade drills (p.73), but earnest training began in 1774. The British regular regiments had little combat experience (p.75). General Gage received wishful advice from the Tories of Boston (p.103). On April 16 General Gage was told to attack Concord where the Provincial Congress was meeting, and guns, powder and other supplies were stored.
Chapter 12 to 26 tell of the historical events of that day with more details than in any general history. The militia at Lexington were in formation on the green, not blocking the roads or in ambush. They did not expect an attack, but it happened. The British then marched to Concord. Faced with a larger force of militia, they returned back to Boston while under continual fire. They were saved by a relief column from Boston, which was attacked in turn. Chapter 27 tells of the aftermath, Chapter 28 of the use of the concept for the New Army (men ready to assemble on a minute's notice). This ready reserve would "reinforce the continental army".
Chapter 29 sums up the Minute Men. Few then or now realized there was "a well-organized, well-equipped, and relatively well-trained army of 14,000 men". It is a myth that the minute men "fought well with no organization, no equipment, no training, and no planning" (p.256). The minute man concept went back over a century in the various wars. Galvin says the legends and anecdotes often conceal hidden information (p.258) [like history as entertainment rather than information]. I think this legend was created in the late 19th century when our "well-regulated militia" came under attack form the newly powerful corporate aristocracy. History was censored for their purposes.
Very difficult to follow the information in book.......2003-11-30
This book was very difficult to follow. The author jumps around throughout book.
Usally the author calls Tories "Loyalists" and Minutemen "Provincials" But I found places in the book where the terminology is inconsistant. Around page 100 he calls the Loyalist Militia "Provincials" VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND!!!

A Disappointing Introduction to a Fascinating Subject.......2003-04-20
Unfortunately, I could not disagree with my fellow reviewer more...
I was introduced to this text while a student in Dr. Malacinski's own molecular biology class at Indiana University. While I learned a great deal from the class itself, I found this book to be utterly disappointing in more ways than one. While he is undoubtedly a great teacher, Dr. Malacinski is a terrible author. His explanations of even the simplest concepts are confusing at best and downright confounding at their worst. Often, the book uses long, languid syntax to explain basic ideas, and in doing so, loses track of the fundamental basis of the concepts it is trying to elucidate. It seems to me as though Dr. Malacinski's purpose in writing an introductory textbook would be better served by offering his readers short, direct, and to-the-point explanations (such as those offered in the "Student Companion.") The trichromatic layout of all the book's diagrams make their interpretation difficult, and do little to provide the reader with relief from the bland nature of the prose. The text's lack of detailed color photographs is equally maddening - more than once when attempting to study one of the book's photographs, I felt as though I were staring at a "magic eye" collage rather than an electron micrograph. Additionally, Dr. Malacinski's attempts of to interject his personal opinions and imbibe his readers with enthusiasm for the subjects being treated feel trite and unnecessary. The text skims over many fundamental issues relevant to the study of molecular biology - most notably in its almost non-existent coverage of proteins and their role in molecular biology. I was equally disappointed in the book's total lack of coverage (or even introduction to) more advanced concepts in the field, particularly eukaryotic molecular biology. Although aptly titled "Essentials of Molecular Biology," students intending to pursue more advanced studies in the fields of biochemistry and molecular/cell biology will be poorly served by the book's complete omission of these advanced concepts. Altogether, while this book is one of the few molecular biology textbooks specifically designed for use in a one-semester undergraduate introductory course, many of the "more advanced" textbooks available provide a more comprehensive and easily understandable treatment of the material covered in this text. To those with a sincere interest in learning about both the concepts and breadth of molecular biology, I recommend "Molecular Biology of the Cell" (4th ed.) by Alberts et al, "Molecular Cell Biology" (4th ed.) by Lodish et al, and "Biochemistry" (5th ed.) by Berg and Stryer as alternatives to this book.
It is to molecular biologists what DNA is to cell........1999-09-13
I read this book at the library and was highly impressed with the mode of explaination and representation. The book is highly informative giving the explaination with the best lucid way and the figures too are at the right places. How so ever the book would have been still more better if the method given at many places would have been clubbed with the major draw backs and precautionary steps.
All in one it is a very useful book to be obtained by the biologists working on the field

Topics in Optimal Design (Lecture Notes in Statistics)
ASIN: 0387982159 |
Book Description
This is author-approved bcc: Optimal design of experiments is an essential component of any research that aims at the estimation of unknown parameters, at model validation, or the comparison and selection of the best among several competing models. The authors' goals are to explain the basic ideas and to create interest in modern problems of experimental design. The topics discussed include designs for inference based on nonlinear models, designs for models with random parameters and stochastic processes, designs for model discrimination and incorrectly specified (contaminated) models, and examples of designs in functional spaces. As the authors avoid technical details, the book assumes only a moderate background in calculus, matrix algebra, and statistics. However, at many places, hints are given how the reader may enhance and adopt the basic ideas for advanced problems or applications. This will allow the book to be used for courses at different levels, and it will be a useful reference for graduate students and researchers in statistics and engineering. Valerii V. Fedorov is Senior Reseacher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and author of "The Theory of Optimal Experiments." Peter Hackl is Professor of Statistics at the University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, Austria, and President of the Austrian Statistical Society.
Book Description
Leopardi's rejection of the Catholicism of his childhood and Enlightenment optimism gives his work a contemporary feel. In J.G. Nichols's translations we grasp the consistent strain of thought in writing, including a biography woven of Leopardi's own words.
Customer Reviews:
Cosi` tra questa immensita` s'annega il pensier mio..........2007-02-13
Introducing a poet who divulged the voice of exclusion seems a bit of a paradox, yet it is precisely what his valiant translator seems to suggest to be doing given the relative want of interest that presently he has been receiving in the U.S. The translation is successfully carried out to the extent that the mood is respected and the melancholy distance is imparted rather faithfully. The resulting exposition of Leopardi's inestimable poetry bears the stamp of a poet who is in tune with his subject and displays considerable lyrical dexterity. However for all the agility that is here employed - so as to reproduce a work akin with the original - as always it inevitably does not do justice to the tremor that transpires through the Italian undulating and langorous resonance. The syntax is also essential to understanding the reach of this poet that only Holderlin, Rilke and Trakl may be said to have deployed a similar structural approach. Giorgio Agamben's book "Language and Death," would be a good source for English readers to "get a feel" of the poet's startling implosion of loss; the subtle fragility of his theory of noia (tedium); the whole of it punctuated with and surging, tentalizing strokes that emerge in the illuminations of village damsels, of frolicsome lads or of the naively insouciant Silvia. The poems herein abound with familiar illustrations of pastoral life and of the sublime that most all Romantic poets resorted to; The fashion in which Leopardi was able to express such aloofness and despair is tragic, brilliant and engagingly dispassionate. In the words of Oliver Goldsmith: "We cannot hesitate to say that in almost every branch of mental exertion, this extraordinary man seems to have had the capacity of attaining, and generally at a single bound, the very highest exellence. Whatever he does, he does in manner that makes it his own; not with a forced or affected, but a true originality. stamping on his work, like other masters, a type that defies all counterfeit." Amoungst others Nietzsche had the daring to translate Leopardi's poetry. These poets shared much more than simply a common profession in Philology...they were far too profound for anyone to fathom the abyss which they ceaselessly foundered within so as to dolcify the excesses of our tragic sense of life.
This Leopardi is much preferable to Lockert Library version........2000-04-04
This English version is of the COMPLETE poems, not just a selection, like that published by Princeton as part of its Lockert Library series. Moreover, this translation by Nichols is far more accurate, formal, and literal than the loose and slangy "translations" by Eamon Grennan. Leopardi is a great poet, and this is a valuable book. The other indispensable Leopardi book currently in print is the Cecchetti translation of the "Moral Essays and Dialogues," published by the University of California Press, in its Biblioteca Italiana series. This is one of the most underrated works of all 19th-century literature! If you like Leopardi's poetry, or the philosophy of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, or even Samuel Beckett, read this book!
Finally, a readable and reliable version of complete poetry!.......1999-05-17
If you like Leopardi, grab this book while you can! It's an English import, and might not be around that long. I've always wanted a complete translation of Leopardi's poetry, and this book fits the bill, with supplements from Leopardi's notebooks and other hard-to-find prose works. Too bad it's listed under the wrong title--I just ordered it, and this book is not called "The Centenary Edition"! This book is actually a paperback editon of the title listed directly above it, "The Canti: With a Selection of the Prose."
