A Very Pleasant Read.......2006-04-12
The book is written in a readable, straightforward and unpretentious style and tells the story in a way that holds your interest. It moves along with a good blend of adventure, history and local culture, as the authors travel down the river to fulfil their dreams.Without wishing to take the analogy too far, the book has a "national geographic" feel about it in respect to layout, ratio of excellent colour photographs to text in the 120 page book, and the documenting of the journey. It is much more than a colour pictured diary but perhaps short of a detailed travel book of the more "popular" variety. The authors have not contrived additional dangers or incidents to embellish the story and manage well to convey their emotions, anxieties and respect for the power of the river. They tell of their interractions with other travellers along the way in a manner that has the feel of what you would experience yourself on a similar trip down the yukon where there are seasonal time constraints and a narrow window of ice free passage and where one didnt go out of the way to find additional interractions or embellishment for a book. They obviously left their egos behind before starting the trip and the result is a very pleasant read of a very well edited book. The colour photographs are tied well to the text and captioned accordingly. It was an enjoyable easy to read book that captures the spirit of the river. It is not a lengthy book but is good at what it does.Certainly is worth owning as the book is enjoyable and worthy of revisiting (certainly visually) at any time the river calls.
Why People Come to Alaska!.......2006-01-01
"Two in a Red Canoe" is the account of a 2000-mile canoe trip down the Yukon River from the Yukon Territory of Canada through interior Alaska to the Bering Sea over the summer of 2001. Most of the commentary is by Megan Baldino, then brand new to Alaska from Illinois, now the anchor for a late night news program in Anchorage. Most of the stunning photographs are by Matt Hage, a native Alaskan then Megan's fiancee, now her husband.
The Yukon River rises in what was once Gold Rush country in NW Canada, flows through an Alaskan interior populated by scattered subsistance settlers, and empties out into the Bering Sea through Yupik Eskimo country in Western Alaska. Along the way, Megan and Matt experience the awesome vastness of interior Alaska, bigger than many states and far wilder. The remains of Gold Rush settlements and trading missions mingle with the homes of modern subsistence hunters and fishermen who make a thin but simple living from the river. In some respects, the journey is one back through time, to a place where strangers are welcomed, not feared, and people share easily despite their relative poverty. The journey is also a difficult and dangerous one, through country known for its volatile weather, mosquitos, and sometimes dangerous wildlife. A simple accident or injury in the Bush can have fatal consequences when help is hours to days away. The two travelors sometimes paddle through five foot wind-whipped waves or share camp sites with wandering grizzly bears. We experience much of this through Megan's eyes as new, sometimes wonderful, and sometimes scary. It is this rawness that takes life back to its simple components and appeals to many visitors to Alaska.
Alaska is one of the last places in the United States where a journey of such length, and with such relative solitude, is still possible. The dangers of such a trip should not be underestimated, but neither should the adventures still available to very normal people. As Megan notes, coming to Alaska is a dream that some people spend a lifetime planning. A lucky few get to call it home. As it turns out, a three month canoe trip is also apparently a great proving ground for two young people planning to marry.
This delightful travel account is highly recommended to those curious about Alaska, and especially those who harbor hope for such a journey for themselves someday.

Looks better than it reads.......2003-06-03
This book purports to be about technologies for finding bombs, but actually is a vehicle to discuss the current state of the art in additives ( called 'taggants') to the zillion pounds of the various black and smokless powders manufactured yearly.
It actually has some value as a reference guide, and does state correctly that taggants should not be implemented.

Book Description
This book presents algorithmic tools for algebraic geometry and experimental applications of them. It also introduces a software system in which the tools have been implemented and with which the experiments can be carried out. Macaulay 2 is a computer algebra system devoted to supporting research in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and their applications. The reader of this book will encounter Macaulay 2 in the context of concrete applications and practical computations in algebraic geometry. The expositions of the algorithmic tools presented here are designed to serve as a useful guide for those wishing to bring such tools to bear on their own problems. These expositions will be valuable to both the users of other programs similar to Macaulay 2 (for example, Singular and CoCoA) and those who are not interested in explicit machine computations at all. The first part of the book is primarily concerned with introducing Macaulay2, whereas the second part emphasizes the mathematics.

The First Installment in a Masterpiece.......2006-02-14
This is the first installment of Hans Urs von Balthasar's magisterial Theo-Drama. Of all the volumes, this is certainly the most difficult one to get through. Von Balthasar's knowledge of dramatic literature and theory is breathtaking. He meticuloutsly explores herein the history of the church and the theatre and vigorously probes countless dramatists and plays to explore the resrouces of dramatic theory for theology. For those who (like myself) are not experts in the history of drama and dramatic theory, much of this book will be quite difficult. Of all five volumes, this one bears the least explicit theological discussion, though such interests are not left excessively undeveloped.
Major themes that get introduced in this volume include the dynamic of relation between the Author, the Actor and the Director in dramatic production. Von Balthasar, later develops this dynamic trintarianly to explicate the Christian theo-drama by understanding the Father as the Author, the Son as the Actor and the Spirit as the director. He also explores the role of the audience, the dramatic presentation itself and the issue of the "horizon" of the drama, which refers to the overarching narrative structure of the drama that gives it its determinate character yet also leave the drama somewhat 'open' to make room for improvisation and spontaneous action on the part of the actors within the framework of the author's intent.
This development in particular leads toward a central theme of the theo-drama, namely the relation of divine and human freedoms. The theo-drama provides a framework within which both the authorship and directorship of God as Lord of the drama is emphasized to the fullest, yet also makes significant room for truly free creaturely existence and activity in and through participation in the theo-drama.
Von Balthasar also develops the concept of the "role" in his discussion of human identity. Here another key concept for the theo-drama, that of mission emerges. For von Balthasar, Christ, THE actor in the theo-drama is fully identified with his mission which is grounded in the trinitarian life of God. Christ is truly free to be himself because he fully appropriates the "role" given to him by the Father, making it his mission. The church receives it's identity in the theo-drama by likewise being included in that mission.
There is much more in this volume than can be discussed here. Scattered all throughout are excurses on various plays and dramatists who von Balthasar draws on. The section on Shakespeare and forgiveness is particularly interesting. There was also much that I didn't feel I was capable of absorbing in this volume, given how detailed it was in its discussion with some of the most abstract literature in the history of drama. Nevertheless, this is an amazing book that draws the reader into one of the most important theological works of the twentieth century, indeed to my mind, the most important work since Barth's Church Dogmatics. Highly recommended.
The first step into a different world.......2001-02-10
On of the mainissues of the Work of Balthasar is the desire to liberate the theology from its narrow constructed house. He was of the opinion that the greek philosophy does not give the sufficient categories to understand in depth the salvation mystery as made trough the living God. Therefore he tried to retell the whole drama of salvation, the drama of Gods encarnation, the drama of the relation between God and every single person, with the help of the theatral categories.
This first volume of the five volume work "Theodrama" is an introduccion to understand and know the categories. Balthasar works trough the whole history of dramaturgia since the very beginning more than 2500 years ago and passes trough an amount of authors uptil the midst of the 20th century. As always Balthasar normally read all the written work of an author. He analieses their works in their usability to offer categories for the development of the "Theodrama".
It is important to be beware that for the theologican Balthasar is to find and develop an analogy from the categories of the dramatic world to get the possiblity to explain better the drama of God with the world. There are no identity between this categories and the drama of God.
"Theodramatic" is maybe the most important contribution Balthasars to the theology and it is highly recommended to read the five volumes.
