A great hiker's guide to Cape Cod.......2000-08-28

Hiking enthusiasts visiting Cape Cod will definitely want to take this book along. On my last trip to the Cape I sampled several of the hikes in this volume and found them all to be wonderful. The book's detailed descriptions and clear maps of dozens of hikes of varying length and character make it easy to find the kind of places you want and navigate them easily. Don't leave home without it!

Description:
Heavy metal analysis of agricultural field soil receiving long-term (>20 years) application of municipal and industrial wastewater showed two- to five-fold accumulation of certain heavy metals as compared to untreated soil. Metal-resistant fungi isolated from wastewater-treated soil belonged to genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Alternaria, Geotrichum, Fusarium, Rhizopus, Monilia and Trichoderma. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for Cd, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Co were determined. The MIC ranged from 0.2 to 5mgml^-^1 for Cd, followed by Ni (0.1-4mgml^-^1), Cr (0.3-7mgml^-^1), Cu (0.6-9mgml^-^1) and for Co (0.1-5mgml^-^1) depending on the isolate. Aspergillus and Rhizopus isolates were tested for their metal biosorption potential for Cr and Cd in vitro. Biosorption experiments were conducted with initial metal concentrations of 2, 4, 6 and 8mM with a contact time of 4h and wet fungal biomass (1-5g) at 25^oC. Maximum biosorption of Cr and Cd ions was found at 6 mM initial metal concentration. Aspergillus sp.1 accumulated 1.20mg of Cr and 2.72mg of Cd per gram of biomass. Accumulation of these two metals by very tolerant Aspergillus sp.2 isolate was at par with relatively less tolerant Aspergillus sp.1 isolate. Rhizopus sp. accumulated 4.33mg of Cr and 2.72mg of Cd per g of biomass. The findings indicated promising biosorption of cadmium and chromium by the Rhizopus and Aspergillus spp. from aqueous solution. There is little, if any, correlation between metal tolerance and biosorption properties of the test fungi.

Practically every old alchemical emblem ever peeled of the printing block is included in this wonderful collection, which is invaluable for this reason alone. The text is a rather muddy analysis along Jungian psychological lines and amounts to little. But the pictures! What a spectacular theatre of bizarre imagery! Indeed the need to interpret is ineluctable. Many volumes have been written offering equally plausable, and mutually exclusive, solutions to the cypher-babble of the alchemists. Since there is no reason to suppose that the medieval sages themselves were all on the same page, no single modern interpretation is sufficient to explain their strange symbols away. Fortunately it's not really necessary to understand these pictures in order to enjoy them - in fact it might easily be said that their very impenetrability is the key to the fascination they hold. All enthusiasts of curious antiquities, students of comparative religion and the migration of symbols, latter-day mystics interested in magic and the occult, could loose hours and hours rapt in close contemplation of this spectacular book. A must-have!

Similar in scope, containing many of the same plates and including a few others exclusively, is "The Golden Game: Alchemical Engravings of the Seventeenth Century" by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola.

For those who have loved Jane Austen's more mature writings, this book is a must read. Compiled from Jane Austen's childhood notebooks, these stories are full of unmasked satire, and endless jokes, aimed to point out the absurdity of the novels of the authores' day. In her more mature years, Jane Austen learned to mask her satire and calm her wit. Such knowledge undoubtably made for better writing, but there is a great deal of enjoyment to be had from a younger pen, the open satire of a girl who was wise enough to see the folly of her times. Catharine and Other Stories will not make wise, or generally inspire, but it is delightful comic relief, as well as a window into the vivacious mind of Jane Austen, the girl.
