Interesting Read.......2005-09-08

My 7th grader was required to have this book for a Watershed Program at her school. We read it together and learned so much about how we as humans effect the watersheds. I look forward to learning more on this subject through her classes this year.

Transition-Era History of Core SP Operations.......2000-07-15

The book focuses on "transition-era" (1945 - 1955: the transition from steam to diesel power) operations in one of the most interesting places for railroading: Southern Pacific's own home region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The archives are opened to deliver photographs of many interesting railroad sights now long-gone: the Oakland pier; Third St. station in San Francisco; electric street cars in Berkeley; Port Costa; etc. In this book the pictures do the talking, with minimal additional text to provide background, context and explanation. All photographs are black and white and mostly cover the SP's steam power used extensively at this time; all are of high quality and provide great insight into the realities and details of railroading during the period. The pictures also document an intriguing history of the Bay Area from a different perspective. (The pictures date from 1937 through 1957, with most in the 1945 to 1955 period.) References are provided to other publications to fill in some of the gaps not covered in this book.

Afro-Bets do excellent job.......2000-02-18

This book was purchased for my 8 year old daughter as a Black History month present. She has read the entire book and has as enjoyed looking at the pictures. It held her attendtion and got her more interested in Africa--which made me extremely happy. The way the book was layed out allowed her to get a better understanding of what was going on. Using actual photographs with the cartoons really gave her a different approach to reading. She was allowed to see the actual events and dress of Africa in certain areas. That's what drew me to the book in the first place. If an individual is teaching or introducing a child to Africa, this is a good book to do so with.

Eric Wolanski's book has received a UN award for excellence. It received the award as being exceptional in the UN Oceans Atlas! Worldwide, urbanization has already reached unprecedented levels in the estuarine and coastal zone. This is particularly the case in the Asia Pacific region where mega-cities and mega-harbours have developed and are still growing. As a result environmental degradation is significant and growing. This book details how science can provide solutions so that economic and social developments can be ecologically sustainable. This book demonstrates the different solutions and pitfalls, successes and failures in a large number of ports and harbours in the Asia Pacific Region, and this will be based on science and aimed at management. Twelve sites are discussed in detail, integrating physics and biology. These are Tokyo Bay, the Pearl Estuary, Hong Kong, Shanghai and the Yangtze delta, Klang, Manila Bay, Jakarta Bay, Pearl Harbour, Ho Chi Minh City and the new harbour on the Thi Vai River, Bangkok and coastal waters of the upper Gulf of Thailand, Singapore and Darwin. This is the shoreline of about 50 million people and the coastal waters of about 500 million people. The social, economic and environmental problems are pressing and call for science-based solutions that are addressed by this challenging book. Thirty internationally recognised, prominent scientists and engineers in universities and research centres in all these cities contributed the chapters in this book. This is the best by Irving. It was my 1st read and still the best. The only book I read twice, 15 years apart.

Anything I have to say about this novel has already been said below. It's wonderful, and I devoured it in two days.

The one thing I will say: The end, sure, was predictable, BUT, Irving allows the reader as much imagination as he/she can muster. There are countless possibilities because the characters are all so different and well developed. I closed the book at least 3 times thinking "Oh my... If this ends the way I think it will right now, I'm going to cry for sure..."

I love this novel. After reading the other reviews on his work, I have to read the other novels too.

Not one of Irving's bests.......2007-04-28

I'm definitely an Irving fan, having read 7 of his books. However, this is not one of my top three. I was a bit disappointed. I found that THE CIDER HOUSE RULES lacked some of the emotional zeal that A WIDOW FOR ONE YEAR and THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP had. I never fell in love with the characters of this book.

Oh Irving, how do I love thee.
Another beautiful, fantastic read by Irving.
Cider house rules is another example of Irving's intricate attention to character and unusual story telling.
The characters in this book are wonderfully flawed, the story is detailed and rich.
If you saw and liked the movie, it has nothing on the book. The book is quite different from the movie, but it will not dissapoint.

Doctor Wilbur Larch who was the administrator over an orphanage and occasionally performed abortions became attached to Homer Wells, one of the young men who was adopted twice and brought back. He taught him everything he knew when he grew older and the young man was great help, except he protested his conscious on the abortion issue. One day he left with a couple on a journey to a new life and experienced things he had never seen or done. All the while Dr. Larch's heart was broken because the young man left and he was trying in every way to get him back. He made fake credentials for him and sent him a doctor bag with instruments. Homer fell in love, wound up with a broken heart, worked on an apple farm and performed an abortion for a young black girl whose own father had gotten her pregnant. When he received a letter saying that the Doctor Larch had died, he left on a train and came back there to take up the doctor's mission. The author created a world where truth rules, one which would not be tolerated by the well-meaning media in our current milieu.
