Excellent book on the subject.......2004-04-18
I've only beeen hunting twice in my life, once deer hunting with a .30-06 and the other quail hunting with a 12-gauge shotgun, so while hunting is not really an interest of mine, I was still struck by the title of a book devoted exclusively to turkey hunting, so I decided to check it out. (Also, at first blush I thought the title had to do with the managers I've had over the years. On the other hand, they're more like tame or couch turkeys. :-)).
I learned some interesting things about turkeys and turkey hunting from this book. For example, the author makes the interesting statement that turkey hunting is the most dangerous hunting sport in the U.S. Apparently there are more hunting accidents turkey shooting than in any other sport. The author says the reasons involve the need for complete camouflage, the use of new magnum shotgun loads with ranges of over 100 yards, the wariness and difficulty of the quarry, and the fact that people try to actively stalk the turkeys and end up getting in each other's line of fire.
The book discusses many aspects of turkey hunting, and there are chapters on habits and habitat, safety and equipment, field dressing, photography, cooking and recipes, and mounting and preserving your trophy. I was struck by some of the recipes which included grandma's sausage stuffing, Wiener schnitzel, savory turkey pie, Plainville turkey thighs, and turkey parmesan and tettrazini, all of which sounded quite appetizing. That's only a sampler. And for those interested in black powder hunting and shooting there is even a section devoted to the use of those rifles, as well as more typical modern rifles. Finally there are appendices listing state game commissions and a glossary of hunting terms.
I noted that the author is apparently a veterinarian, and he certainly knows a lot about birds and specifically turkeys. The text is well written and there are plenty of illustrations to accompany the text. Although as I said I'm no expert in this area this seemed like an excellent book on the subject which I can highly recommend.
Typical middle of the road hunting book.......2002-10-17
I have read several turkey hunting books, magazines, and articles. This book does contain some good information, but mainly just touches on the basics. As an experienced hunter, this book didn't really offer me any help I could use in the field. I would only recommend this book for a hunter new to turkey hunting and only wanting brief information.
An informative book beautifully written.......1999-08-26
I was amazed by this book; it was a real page turner. I could not put it down and read straight though it in a few days. The author (John Mettler) combines great information and anecdotes to apply what he describes. Mr. Mettler is a veterinarian so he is able to explain all sorts of reasons behind the behavior of the wild turkey. You'll not only learn where turkeys will be, but why they are there. Great for a begining turkey hunter and the acomplished one who needs a little brush up on stratagies.
Extensive information about an intriguing game species........1999-02-13
Mettler gives a thorough examination of the wild turkey. He covers information about its origins, habitat, calls, and the equipment and skills necessary for a successful and ethical harvest. The illustrations also give clarity to the greenhorn turkey hunter.

A unique and informative contribution to Lighthouse history.......2001-01-17
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Women Who Kept The Lights: An Illustrated History Of Female Lighthouse Keepers continues to be a unique and informative contribution to Lighthouse histories and studies. In an occupation dominated by males, Mary Louise and Candace Clifford reveal the names of 141 women who received official keeper appointments in the lighthouse service. More than twice that number received appointments as assistant keepers. Most of this number were wives, widows or daughters of former keepers, beginning with Hannah Thomas at Plymouth Light on the Massachusetts coasts in 1776 (her husband went off to fight the British), and ending with Fannie Salter, who tended the Turkey Point Light on Chesapeake Bay from her husband's death in 1925 until she retired in 1947. It was only with the introduction of automated lights by the U.S. Coast Guard in the 20th Century that the lighthouse keepers became obsolete and passed into history. "Must" reading for lighthouse history enthusiasts and women's studies groups, Women Who Kept The Lights wonderfully details the careers of 30 of these vigorous women.
Women Who Kept the Lights.......2000-04-07
Until I found this book listed by Amazon.com, I never realized women *were* lighthouse keepers. Clifford and Clifford's book will banish forever the image of the lighthouse keeper as crusty old batchelor, and will bring a renewed sense of awareness of the many accomplishments of which women are capable. The careful research done by the authors brings out a rarely publicized image of the women who tended the big lights, carefully pollishing the reflectors and the glass, keeping the lighthouses clean and functional, welcoming and educating visitors and doing their part - often heroically, to keep the vital paths of sea and lake open and safer by running these lights (often operating more than one beacon), running foghorns(either through mechanical devices or by hand), even saving lives. Through each vignette, a larger and more complete image emerges of the lives of the women who tended lighthouses, often while caring for invalid fathers and husbands, as well as bearing and raising children in these often-isolated locations. I must admit, I wish there had been more material on the west coast of America, and hope there might be a sequal. The photographs and sidebars added substance to this excellent publication. This will be a worthwhile addition to any library, especially if the reader enjoys American history and the role of women in American culture.
Book Description
Profusely illustrated fact-filled survey of American lighthouses since 1716. Includes over 200 stations — East, Gulf, and West coasts, Great Lakes, Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Mississippi and St. Lawrence Rivers. The author also traces the development of the lighthouse from the Pharos of Alexandria to today.

Brings Light to the subject.......2002-12-04
Holland gives us a great overview of the history of America's lighthouses which is a wonderful introduction for anyone interested in learning more about this topic. The first third of the book takes us through the history of the lighthouse authorities, and the people involved in various aspects of locating, building and maintaining these beacons. He gives you an idea just how such important aids to maritime traffic evolved often as the lonely stepchild in a system rife with patronage and corruption to a system of still relevant lights on the coasts. Holland then turns his story to looking at the historical progression of building lights in different areas of the country - the upper Atlantic States, Southeastern states, Gulf coast, Great Lakes, Pacific coast. Often times these stories are not significant for one light but become important when woven with the history of other lights in the area. Unfortunately, here he tries to cover too much ground in too much of an overview. While many lighthouse's history consists of a couple of paragraphs of relevant data, to see these again and again starts to numb you to them. I found after a couple of coasts, my interest started to wane, wanting to only read a couple of specific lighthouses' histories. I think that woven as a narrative, these histories would have proven more riveting. Still overall it is evident that Holland has spent time researching his topic and the book is rich in period photographs to help bring his stories alive. A very good book, just not a great one. Certainly one to pick up and learn more about America's lighthouses.
History of Lighthouses.......2000-08-09
F. Ross Holland's book is one of the most historically complete books on lighthouses in America. He covers all of the most well known lights and recounts the history of lighthouses in general as well as of many of the individual lights. One chapter, entitled "The Keepers Life," takes some of the romance out of that long lost profession and presents the real life drudgery of those who kept the flame. Holland's book has numerous archetectural drawings and maps of lighthouse locations, but it does not have much in the way of good photographs. All of the pictures, in fact, are in black and white. Still, Holland's book is a great place to start to begin to understand the history of lighthouses.
300,000 candlepower of great American History........2000-04-03
America's Lighthouses is not a coffee table book with romanticized, full-color photos of the Portland Head Light at sunset. Holland has written a history, & a very good one.
He begins with a summary of the lighthouse in western world history, including the Pharos of Alexandria & the excellent designs created by the British & French.
The reader will come away from this book with an understanding of various systems used to create & magnify light. We learn that the late adoption of the Fresnel lense in America was due to a short-sighted federal government bureaucrat.
The American lighthouse system shaped up with the creation of the Lighthouse Board in 1854.
Holland gives up a clear picture of the keeper's difficult life & the specific duties & routines he or she had to follow.
Following an informative chapter on lightships, Holland takes us on a chronological & regional tour of America's lighthouses, covering dates of operations & architectural types, renovations, & including anecdotal highlights of a station's history.
America's Lighthouses has 100 black & white photos & illustrations - many of them quite extraordinary; 16 architectural line drawings & 8 maps. This is a wonderful book, educational yet filled with the drama of real life at the edge of our oceans & inland seas. Bargain-priced from Dover, too.
Bob Rixon
A very informative book. Interesting and informative........1999-08-16
Overall a very good book. Not only covers lighthouses but lightships and fog signals as well. Most of the major lighthouses were very well covered, however some of the lesser known ones were not as well covered. The book is a little sparse with pictures, but what pictures it does have are very good. A comprehensive chart listing the charactaristics of the lights covered would be nice. I would not hesitate to purchase this book.

Book Description
This book constitutes a comprehensive survey of the balance equations for mass, momentum and energy for the interfaces in pure fluids and mixtures. Constitutive laws are presented for many situations in engineering science, and examples are provided, including surface viscosity effects, variable surface tension and vapor recoil. In addition, some extensions of existing theory are given: stretch effect in premixed flames, relaxation zones downstream two-phase shock waves, and effective surface tension for steep gradient zones.

Although, in the eyes of many, the law "moves slowly and sluggishly" behind society's advances, Lawrence M. Friedman, in Law in America, a historical overview from colonial times to the present, posits that this is an "illusion." As surely as culture creates law, law creates culture. The American legal system--a bubbling mélange of common ("judge-made") and civil (derived from codes) law--is a "complicated beast," born of thousands of political entities. Originally a "crude and stripped down" descendant of English law, American law in the 19th century was often an instrument of "economic promotion." In the 20th century, with the rise of a national economy, an evermore heterogeneous population, waning federalism, and the rise of what Friedman calls the "administrative-welfare state," the law daily reached further, into the jurisdiction of civil rights of all stripes, product liability, malpractice, and environmental and antitrust considerations. Friedman's chapters on the colonial period and family law are strong, while his look at the contemporary legal climate drifts toward a general discussion of political and social mores. --H. O'Billovich
Book Description
Throughout America’s history, our laws have been a reflection of who we are, of what we value, of who has control. They embody our society’s genetic code. In the masterful hands of the subject’s greatest living historian, the story of the evolution of our laws serves to lay bare the deciding struggles over power and justice that have shaped this country from its birth pangs to the present.
Law in America is a supreme example of the historian’s art, its brevity a testament to the great elegance and wit of its composition.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent intro to subject.......2007-05-13
I am a newcomer to this subject and found Prof. Friedman's book informative and approachable. Prior to this, I found reading about law pretty dry and boring compared to science (my usual preference), but this book managed to hold my interest from beginning to end. Taking a historical approach, Prof. Friedman shows how the law reflected changing social conditions and priorities as America evolved from a primitive, farming-based colony to a thriving industrial state. Overall this is a readable and interesting introduction to this important subject.
A nice introduction.......2007-02-12
I am a lawyer working in Australia. I am planning to do more law study in the US later this year, and read this book on the recommendation of a professor. While a section of the book after the introduction is a little straight-forward and essentially like revision for someone familiar with the common law, the book then moves into a very accessible and engaging introduction to some major ideas, landmarks and (more or less) large-scale developments in American law. As such, it was a very useful guide to a lawyer with no real knowledge of American legal history. A nice, quick introduction which would enable the reader to delve deeper subsequently in some of the issues the book discusses.
very well done...relevant and interesting.......2006-12-05
It is remarkable that Friedman can cover so much in such a short book, and he does it with great clarity. Moreover he excels in helping the reader feel connected to the material, making it seem more relevant and interesting. I've wanted to read the thicker Friedman book: A History of American Law, for years now, but have never gotten around to it. This much shorter book is something that can be read and easily digested in just a few days, and it has given me the increased motivation I've needed to commit to diving into Friedman's fatter history of law, as well as his similarly portly history of 20th century American law. This small volume is highly recommended as an introduction to a very engaging writer who has an admirable and extensive talent for clearly explaining the workings of our legal system and its history.
succinct.......2005-08-22
A brilliant survey of American legal history. Be advised that this edition seems to be an abridged version of two greater Lawrence Friedman works, A History of American Law and American Law in the 20th Century and if you're at all intrigued with this kind of work, or if this edition intrigues you, I do highly recommend those volumes.
This particular work is the kind of book you might want to send to family members curious about why you're going/have gone to law school, particularly as Mr. Friedman's prose is clear and quite readable, and won't intimidate people who are new to the law. A good sampler indeed.
American Law in context.......2005-08-07
This pocket book by Lawrence Friedman is a beautifully crafted short history of American Law and the politics behind. It is neither a reference book nor an introduction to U.S. legal history, but a discourse (or journey) on the evolution of law in America. It is very evocative and generates a craving for more (for that there is a nice commented bibliography). Friedman finds space to comment the system ("In a common law system, the judges who write the opinions are crucial and important figures. To be more precise, the law gets made by appellate judges"), its procedures (The overwhelming majority of cases are never appealed to a higher court indeed, the overwhelming majority of controversies never get to the courts at all") and its inhabitants ("Americans, it is said, are more rights conscious than most citizens of other countries; more prone to sue for damages"). If those appears personal views, instead they are thoroughly thought, but supporting evidence should be found elsewhere. While this book is less than 200 pages, the number of issues dealt in the book is impressive, from slavery to punishment, from privacy to how insurance companies and other businesses have waged a campaign against excessive tort liability (famous fabricated horror stories: the psychic who got a million dollars for losing her psychic power; the woman who got millions for spilling hot coffee on herself ; the burglar who was hurt while burglarizing somebody's house, and sued the owners). A highly recommended book for all.
Book Description
From the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 to the end of the twentieth century, the United States committed its forces to more than a dozen military operations. Offering a fresh analysis of the Iranian hostage rescue attempt, the invasions of Granada and Panama, the first Gulf War, the missions in Somalia and Bosnia, and more, author and distinguished U.S. naval captain Peter Huchthausen presents a detailed history of each military engagement through eyewitness accounts, exhaustive research, and his unique insider perspective as an intelligence expert. This timely and riveting military history is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the nature of war today (Stephen Trent Smith).
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating overview of an eventful era in U.S. military history.......2005-08-28
"America's Splendid Little Wars: A Short History of U.S. Engagements from the Fall of Saigon to Baghdad," by Peter Huchthausen, is a fascinating guide to a quarter century of American military actions. Starting with the S.S. _Mayaguez_ incident off the coast of Cambodia in 1975, Huchthausen tells the story of many missions: the failed 1980 attempt to rescue hostages in Iran, intervention in Lebanon in the 1980s, the 1983 Grenada invasion, the 1986 attack on Libya, activities in the Persian Gulf in the late 1980s, intervention in Panama in 1989, Operation Desert Shield (1990-91) and the 1991 Gulf War, the 1991 relief effort on behalf of the Kurds of northern Iraq, actions in Somalia in the early 1990s, intervention in Bosnia in the 1990s, and the 1999 Kosovo campaign.
The book is full of good features: logical organization, more than a dozen clear and informative maps, several pages of black-and-white photographs, a comprehensive nine-page bibliography, and an index. Huchthausen's prose style is clear and to-the-point. A paragraph about the author notes that he is a retired U.S. Navy captain, and that he served as an analyst of the Soviet navy, a submarine expert, and a naval attache. In his introduction Huchthausen notes that the phrase "splendid little war" was used in 1898, by a U.S. ambassador, to describe the Spanish-American War (incidentally, Theodore Roosevelt's classic memoir of that war, "The Rough Riders," would make a great companion text for this book). Huchthausen notes the irony of his book's title: "The U.S. military encounters from 1975 to 1999 were neither splendid nor small."
Huchthausen offers gripping descriptions of the unfolding events, both political and military, of each "little war." He gives historical backgrounds for the conflicts and also provides interesting analyses of the U.S. actions. Significant recurring themes include relations between the press and the military, the combination of assets from different branches of the U.S. military, and the use of unconventional forces such as Navy SEALs and the Army's Delta Force. We get glimpses of some fascinating personalities: U.S. Admiral William J. Crowe, Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega, Somali warlord Muhammad Farah Aideed, Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, and more. In an afterword (to the 2004 edition), Huchthausen reflects on more recent U.S. wars in Afghanistan (since 2001) and Iraq (since 2003).
Yes, one can only fit so much information into the relatively short space allotted to each "little war," and at times I felt that the book didn't give a full enough story. Still, as a general overview of this era the book is very useful, and the excellent bibliography offers interested readers plenty more places to go if he or she wants to learn more. For additional companion texts that cover some of the same material from other valuable perspectives, I recommend "Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy SEAL," by Chuck Pfarrer, and "Inside Delta Force," by Eric Haney. Overall, I consider "America's Splendid Little Wars" a well-written and valuable book--in particular, essential reading for contemporary military professionals.

Book Description
Since the evacuation of Saigon in 1975, America has committed its forces to combat in more than a dozen military operations. In America's Splendid Little Wars, distinguished U.S. Naval Captain Peter Huchthausen explores the modern development of America's tradition of small wars. From the 1975 operation to recover the hijacked merchant ship SS Mayaguez in the Gulf of Siam to the 1999 "relief intervention" in Kosovo, Huchthausen presents an intimate history of each military engagement. Through eyewitness accounts, thorough research, and his unique insider perspective as an intelligence expert, he offers a fresh analysis of the Iranian hostage rescue attempt, the invasions of Grenada and Panama, the Gulf War, and the missions in Somalia and Bosnia.
This timely and riveting military history shows how America-now the world's sole remaining superpower-has enforced the global "Pax Americana" by developing and honing its military capability and making sophisticated use of the media and public sentiment.

Twenty-five years of mediocrecy........2006-07-10
A short review of fifteen American conflicts in twenty-five years. The premise is good, but this is a short summary of many conflicts. They include the conflicts in Cambodia, Grenada, Lebanon, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Somilia, Kosovo, and Bosnia. Most of these were disappointing conflicts from the American point of view. The author basically rehashs the conflicts and how America intervened. One conflict he went in detail was Bosnia, but he gave short shift to the success of the reconquest of Kuwait.
These are OK summaries of all these conflicts, but one will not find any new information in them. None of them were new to me.
This is an OK read for those interested in American foreign policy from 1975-2000. This is a summarization of all the conflicts in these twenty five years. Most of them were disappointments to the U.S.. This includes even the successes such as the seizure of the SS Mayaguez. This conflict caused more deaths than it saved. An OK read.
The Good, the Bad & the Ugly of U.S. Foreign Policy.......2005-08-12
This is book represents a straightforeward chronology of significant American military endeavors since Vietnam ending with the first Gulf war. The author is obviously a military fanatic, as we are treated to more a strategic analysis of these conflicts than any overall analysis of their long term consequences, but this is a minor criticism of a pretty good read.
This book is of considerable value in light of current events. When I was finished reading about the last 30 years of Americn imperialism, I was left with rather mixed feellings about the extent to which my country has meddled in the destiny of other nations and whether it has truly been worth it. America has had some heroic sucesses (Kosovo), military successes(Grenada,Panama,Gulf War 1) and dismal failures (Lebanon, Somalia). I found the chapter on the failed Iran hostage rescue to be a particularly depressing lesson in military incompetence.
The reasons for launching these foreign wars has been as varied as the results they have acheived, yet one aspect is crystal clear: despite America's monstrous advantages of wealth, military power and technology, long term victory even over 3rd world dictatorships is NEVER a sure thing.
Brilliant.......2004-08-25
This incisive and unbiased historical analysis of modern military engagements is invaluable as a basis for understanding the motivations, complexities, and details of armed conflicts that have involved America's fighting forces during the critical times covered in this book. Anyone wishing to broaden their comprehension of the policies, politics, and compulsions underlying decisions to engage in battle will find America's Splendid Little Wars a very satisfying read.>
Some succes, some failure.......2004-06-15
This book is a survey of 14 American (some with allies) military actions from 1975 till 2000. For those interested in the military side it is interesting. He also writes a little about the politics behind it, though never really critizing it vehemently. It's a good reference book and I think well researched.
Good Overview of Modern "Small" Wars.......2004-02-23
The major U.S. wars -- especially the Civil War and the highly romanticized WW II -- loom large in the American consciousness. But as Max Boot demonstrated in his "The Savage Wars of Peace" (2002), scores of military engagements, interventions, peacekeeping operations and so-called "small" wars have had consequential impact. Boot discusses many such pre-Vietnam operations, including the efforts to end Barbary Coast piracy, the Spanish-American war, the Pancho Villa expedition, and various South America and the Caribbean interventions, among others.
Now Peter Huchthausen picks up where Boot left off, with a concise examination of more than a dozen military operations that occurred between 1975 and 2000.
Huchthausen, best known as the author of "K-19: The Widowmaker," presents the ignominious (Iranian Hostage Rescue, Lebanon, Somalia) alongside the unqualified successes (Panama, Desert Shield/Storm, Libya retaliation) and engagements in which success came at a price (Grenada, Kosovo).
Throughout the narrative, it is interesting to observe the U.S. military progressively restoring its efficacy following its "hollow" period in the immediate aftermath of Vietnan. And we see the positive effects of the Goldwater-Nichols reforms (1986) in fostering increased inter-service cooperation and improved operational performance. Inter-service coordination, for example, was much better in Panama (late 1989) than in Grenada (1983).
Huchthausen's book is a highly readable, compact overview, easily digestible in one session or two. Well worth the time for anyone interested in the creation of the modern U.S. military, whose recent successes in Afghanistan and Iraq we've all marveled at.
