Book Description
Conservation International's Hotspots placed that organization at the forefront of global conservation efforts. Wilderness: Earth's Last Wild Places continues the efforts made in that previous volume, combining nearly 500 breathtaking images of untamed lands and rare glimpses of the people who inhabit them with the most current scientific analyses of their endangered ecosystems.
To qualify as "wilderness," the areas included must have 70 percent or more of their original vegetation, cover at least 10,000 square kilometers, and have fewer than five people per square kilometer. Wilderness identifies 37 wilderness areas around the globe—including tropical rain forests, wetlands, deserts, and arctic tundra, from Amazonia to the Congo Forests of Central Africa to the complex of North American deserts—and presents the research of nearly 200 specialists carried out over two years by Conservation International's Center for Applied Biodiversity Science with support from its Global Conservation Fund. The result is a detailed document of the biological riches that can be found in each of the wilderness areas, with chapters that describe and illustrate them, highlight the human cultures unique to each area, and explain the threats to each region and the conservation measures in place.
The result of a collaboration among CEMEX, Conservation International, and Agrupación Sierra Madre, Wilderness will enjoy the same reputation as the earlier Conservation International books—a volume that presents vital information on the earth's biodiversity and a realistic program of conservation complemented by state-of-the-art photography.
Customer Reviews:
The real richness of our planet.......2006-11-06
An excellent book that I whish everybody in the world would be able to see and realize that the real richness we have in our lives is nature. Help protect the last wild places
One of a kind..........2004-01-04
The three massive books of this series ("Megadiversity", "Hotspots", and the latest, "Wilderness.") should be considered a "must have" for every person who is concerned about the future of life on Earth. The photographs of the natural world are many and without parallel - in huge format and by the world's greatest nature photographers (Gil, Lanting, Rowell, Wolfe, etc.). The accompanying text is by no means "lite" reading - indepth description of the threats currently facing earth's last remaining wild ecosystems and how Conservation Internation is addressing those threats.
"Wilderness" also pays special attention to the human cultures that are on the brink of extinction side-by-side with the lemurs, tigers, and tamarins.
It should be noted that these are, physically, some of the largest books I have ever seen. They weigh over 20 lbs and measure 12" by 14" - not something that is easily read in bed - but still handsome and absolutely stuffed with content.
I will treasure this book (and its two sister volumes) for the rest of my life and look forward to sharing them with my children. If anything, they are a super-detailed, highly poignant accounts of the state of Earth's biosphere in 1998-2003, and what mankind was doing to both destroy and save those systems.

Wildlife photos abound.......2002-12-05
Ship In The Wilderness is a presentation of the voyages of the MS Explorer through the last wild places on Earth blends a travelogue with a nature diary and an account of expedition cruising. Snyder's wildlife and landscape photography enhances Shackleton's text and log-book drawings to make for a very different kind of natural history title. Wildlife photos abound.

Inside the front cover is a full-color map of the Hawaiian Islands, with an inset of Honolulu. Inside the back cover is a huge foldout map of Hawaii. And between the two are more than 600 pages of data and advice that will allow you to explore Hawaii on a very reasonable budget.
The reassuringly titled chapter "Planning an Affordable Trip to Hawaii" helps travelers decide where and when to go, how to avoid sunburns, and how to avoid getting burnt by rip-offs, too. There are pointers on cyberdeals, package deals, and other assorted money-saving tips. The authors also provide thumbnail descriptions of the various islands, which include the Frommer's "Best Of" lists, aiding your selection with round-ups of the top beaches, camping, family accommodations, adventures, cultural experiences, and low-cost destinations.
Once you've made your major decisions, the island-specific chapters provide the details, with reasonably priced accommodations, dining, beaches, nature hikes, tours, camping, shopping, and nightlife. There's also an appendix on Hawaiian history and food, culture, language, and flora and fauna. Jeanette Foster and Jocelyn Fujii, both residents of Hawaii, make a trip to Hawaii more focused and more affordable than you might have thought possible, and thus more likely to actually occur. --Stephanie Gold

Hawaii trip.......2001-12-11
The cheap eats section of the book was very useful, but the map was not useful at all. It was just a basic map. It had no streets on the map.
Great Guide Book.......2000-05-25
This book has some great finds such as places to eat (for reasonable amounts). It talks of one place on Maui that's a community college. The students create a four course meal for only $11! It also gave us some great suggestions for where we can spend our honeymoon. I would definitely try out the bed and breakfasts over the "canned" travel agent resorts. Excellent resource for prices on tours & activities. I reviewed at least 6 books on Hawaii and found this one to be the most resourceful. Definitely a keeper!

A must-have for those who wish to explore the real Hawaii!.......1998-11-11
Given the fact that I was a kaamaaina (local of the Hawaiian islands) for a few years, I thought I'd never use a travel guide for Hawaii. When we were planning for our anniverary trip to Hawaii this fall, we decided to look into a few guide books so we can use it to suppliment our knowledge of the islands. This book is so well-organized by categories, we ended up using its maps and recommendations for eateries and restaurants daily. On top of that, we saved so much money on food and we also got to eat at all the places the locals eat! Having the book made our trip worry-free! We definitely recommend this book for all those who plan to visit the Hawaiian islands!

Not impressed.......2005-09-01
I teach middle school mathematics. I purchased this book for my students to read. My hope was to broaden their understanding of the field of mathematics. The title gave me the impression of some depth into the beginnings of algebra some of the mathematicians who contributed to it yet it was lacking in any substance. Most of the book seemed devoted to the solving of math problems ~ which could be found in a textbook.

Atlas of Mouse Development
ASIN: 0195075544 |
Book Description
Mouse Genetics offers for the first time in a single comprehensive volume a practical guide to mouse breeding and genetics. Nearly all human genes are present in the mouse genome, making it an ideal organism for genetic analyses of both normal and abnormal aspects of human biology. Written as a convenient reference, this book provides a complete description of the laboratory mouse, the tools used in analysis, and procedures for carrying out genetic studies, along with background material and statistical information for use in ongoing data analysis. It thus serves two purposes, first to provide students with an introduction to the mouse as a model system for genetic analysis, and to give practicing scientists a detailed guide for performing breeding studies and interpreting experimental results. All topics are developed completely, with full explanations of critical concepts in genetics and molecular biology. As investigators around the world are rediscovering both the heuristic and practical value of the mouse genome, the demand for a succinct introduction to the subject has never been greater. Mouse Genetics is intended to meet the needs of this wide audience.
Customer Reviews:
This textbook is on the web!.......2003-03-21
This textbook provides a good overview of the conceptual foundations of mouse genetics, but it is rapidly becoming out of date as it was last published in 1995. Thus the text doesn't address the current impact of the sequencing of various genomes, especially that of the mouse.

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to present a self contained introduction to the mathematical and physical aspects of the theory of water waves. The book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate levels for engineers, physical scientists and mathematicians. Each chapter is concluded with practical problems expressed as exercises and accompanied by ample references for further studies. The book consists of ten chapters arranged into three parts: Part I: Basic Fluid Mechanics and Solutions Techniques which cover chapters 1-3. Part II: Water Waves covering chapters 4-7. Part III Advanced Water Waves which covers chapters 8-10. Parts I and II are elementary in nature; whereas Part III is more advanced. The first three chapters give the derivations of the fundamental mathematical equations. Chapter 2 outlines appropriate differential equations to describe the physical phenomena, and Chapter 3 reviews solution techniques of some simplified partial differential equations. Chapter 4 gives the developmental of wave equations, including the essential boundary conditons and describes small amplitude wave theory. Chapter 5 deals with finite amplitude wave theory and Chapter 6 outlines the study of tidal dynamics in shallow water. For random wave case, the deterministic methods described in previous chapters do not hold good. Therefore, chapter 7 is clearly devoted to wave statistics and wave energy spectrum. The application of wave theory is demonstrated in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 examines the nonlinear long waves in shallow water from a mathematical view point. The book concludes with Chapter 10 which illustrates the inverse scattering technique to solve solitary wave problem.
Book Description
Four classic stories of the sea by Joseph Conrad: “Typhoon,” “Amy Foster,” “Falk,” and “Tomorrow”
These powerful stories, as Conrad critic Paul Kirschner has observed, present “a chiaroscuro of sea and land life in an alternating rhythm of hope and despair.” In “Typhoon,” a storm upends a captain’s complacency, hurling him and his crew into a terrifying battle with nature. “Amy Foster” tells the story of an Eastern European immigrant shipwrecked off the coast of England, and his ultimately doomed love affair with the dim-witted Amy Foster. In “Falk,” the protagonist harbors a terrible secret that inhibits his ability to confront the woman he loves and find the wife he longs for. And in “Tomorrow,” the son of a retired sea captain, who has been waiting years for his boy to come home, finally returns, but only because he is destitute and needs money.

No, not " The Perfect Storm" -- Better .......2007-03-24
Typhoon and Other Short Stories -By Joseph Conrad *****
"She seemed, indeed, to have been used as a running target for the secondary batteries of a cruiser. A hail of minor shells could not have given her upper works a more broken, torn, and devastated aspect; and she had about her the worn, weary air of ships coming from the far ends of the world - and indeed with truth, for in her short passage she had been very far; sighting, truly, even the coast of the Great Beyond, whence no ship ever returns to give up her crew to the dust of the earth." Typhoon
Conrad is a master of observation. His novels and short stories aren't great narratives and dramas so much as they are depictions of the mind and the human spirit. In Typhoon, to be sure, nothing really happens: a coastal ship with a bizarre captain encounters some "dirty weather knocking about" and barely survives. Except for the ending, it's "The Perfect Storm" without the A-List cast.
The relationship between Mr. Jukes, the first officer, and Captain McWhirr, the distant and preoccupied ship's master, is the story, such as it is. The Captain is infuriatingly obtuse, choosing to trust his own judgment rather than the experience of others:
"Captain McWhirr, took a run and brought himself up by an awning stanchion.
"A Profane man," he said, obstinately. "If this goes on, I'll have to get rid of him first chance." "It's the heat,' said Jukes. "The weather's awful. It would make a saint swear. Even up here I feel exactly as if I had my head tied up in a woolen blanket." Captain McWhirr looked up. "D'ye mean to say, Mr. Jukes, that you ever had your head tied up in a blanket? What was that for?" It's a manner of speaking, sir." Said Jukes,Stolidly.
I cite another paragraph of Conrad's simply for the beauty of his language (which, after all, he didn't learn until he was 20 years old):
"The Nan-Shan was plowing a vanishing furrow upon the circle of the sea that
had the surface and the shimmer of an undulating piece of gray silk. The sun, pale
and without rays, poured down leaden heat in a strangely indecisive light, and the Chinamen were lying prostrate about the decks. Their bloodless, pinched, yellow
faces were like the faces of bilious invalids.
... The smoke struggled with difficulty out of the funnel, and instead of streaming
away spread itself out like an infernal sort of cloud, smelling of sulphur and raining soot all over the decks."
Another reviewer has taken other critics to task for panning Conrad's work. I won't bother: it's enough for me to know that Conrad is ranked among the greatest of writers of English. From his novels (Nostromo, Lord Jim) to short works (Heart of Darkness; The Secret Sharer) he is a universally acknowledged master. -Philip Henry
FIVE STARS *****
essential writing.......2000-06-22
The stories in this book are sea tales in Conrad's tradition of pessimistic, psychological fiction. Typhoon is particularly good, but the other stories are interesting as well. If it seems like Conrad is just writing adventure stories, well, that's just not true. He's writing about the most important themes, and setting them against a backdrop of exciting seafaring and travel.
If a reader finished Heart of Darkness, and enjoyed it, then that reader might want to pick this book up next, and give it a whirl.

Book Description
TYPHOON * FALK * AMY FOSTER *THE SECRET SHARER The four tales in this volume share autobiographical origins in Conrad's experience at sea and his exile from Poland, the country of his birth. 'Typhoon' is the story of a steamship and her crew beset by tempest, and of the stolid captain whose dogged courage is tested to the limit. In 'Falk' a taciturn young woman is bizarrely courted by a tug-boat master who is haunted by a terrible secret. 'Amy Foster' tells of an emigrant Pole struggling to overcome isolation and prejudice in England. The final tale, 'The Secret Sharer', is Conrad's most famous short story, a masterpiece of suspense and ambiguity. Giving sanctuary to a fugitive sailor, a young sea-captain risks his ship and his command in order to save him. This revised edition uses the English first edition texts and has a new chronology and bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Classic Conrad: for adults only.......2006-05-04
Conrad was one of the most psychologically subtle of English novelists, and his century-old portrait of Captain McWhirr in the title story is unforgettable - not so much because of the drama, though there's eventually plenty of that, but because of Conrad's unsurpassed ability to describe complex, perfectly convincing characters you've never read about before. McWhirr is a strange mixture of meticulousness and stupidity, shyness and guts, small-mindedness and fair play. By the end of the story, you still think he's very much a fool and probably incompetent to command a sailing vessel. Yet you can't discount his determination and ability to do exactly what's needed (as well as what's right)when the time for action arrives.
Those whose reading skills are pushed to the limit by celebrity bios won't understand or appreciate this book. Despite the one-star reviews below, there are no "gay" characters here, and no sex at all. So if that's what you want, look elsewhere. But if you're up to a classic of English fiction, written with an enormous sensitivity to language (Conrad, BTW, grew up speaking Polish and only began English in his teens) these stories will stick with you.
This is a good book if you only look deeper..........2003-01-21
For the other reviewers, I can't believe that the only things you gathered from the book was that it was about 2 gay men and a typhoon. The book is about how people react in times of crisis, and how sometimes you can't run away from your problems; you have to face them head-on. We have MacWhirr, who is innocent, calm, and quiet, yet unwaivering and unknowingly bold during the time of disaster. Then there's Jukes, who jabbers constantly, passes judgement on people, and during time of crisis he freezes, is mostly pessimistic, and practically daydreams. And finally, there's the second mate, who is an all around sneaky and immoral person, who during bad times often "jumps ship" and declares defeat before it's even begun. MacWhirr says many times throughout the story that you have to face things, and you don't know if somethings really bad unless you have been right in the middle of it. It's a story about a man who's had his normal, peaceful life turned upside-down by an unrelenting and, in the end, revealing storm.
Huh? What was that about????????????.......1999-03-22
I basically have no idea what the author was writing about throughout the whole entire story. Conrad confused me...obviously he was very confused when he wrote it, too! Also, if he was trying to convey a story about a couple of fruity people in Typhoon, it worked!!!
What?.......1999-02-24
Basically that is what I was asking myself through the entire book. What is going ON? I dunno, something abt a typhoon and these two gay guys on a ship I think ... Conrad needed a therapist. I think he was confused.

"Typhoon" is a tale of men who must pit themselves against the violence of a storm. "The Shadow-Line and "The Secret Sharer" turn on an opposite, though hardly less ominous mood of the sea, a dead calm.
