Product Description
Recombinant proteins, produced in cells or microorganisms, play an important role in basic research, medical science and the biotechnology industry. Many foreign gene expression systems using mammalian cells, E. coli, insect cells, yeast and other organisms as hosts have been developed. However, only recently has the expression system of Schizosaccharomyces pombe as a host become a subject of focus, as it is expected to be profitable for expressing foreign genes. The reason for this is that S. pombe is evolutionarily more advanced than other types of yeast. This book describes the use of S. pombe in basic research and industrial applications.

Book Description
Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering of Yeasts presents a comprehensive examination of how yeasts are used in genetic engineering. The book discusses baker's yeast, in addition to a number of unconventional yeasts being used in an increasing number of studies. 175 figures help illustrate the information presented. Topics discussed include yeast transformation, yeast plasmids, protein localization and processing in yeast, protein secretion, various aspects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and heterologous expression and secretion.

Book Description
An indispensable guide to an emerging technology, this unique book introduces detailed methods for the construction, screening, and use of DNA sequences cloned into yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) vectors and the applications of YACs to gene hunting. Also covered are the reconstruction of large genes and the analysis of YACs by insertion back into mammalian cells--a method that may lead to the therapeutic use of YAC clones. The methods described are drawn form work on human DNA, but are universal to yeast artificial chromosomes used in other organisms. YAC Libraries is the third volume in the UWBC Biotechnical Resource Series with Dr. Richard Burgess, Director of the University of Wisconsin Biotechnology center, as Series Editor. The series is dedicated to providing practical guidance to researchers exploring new technologies and services.

Book Description
This completely revised and updated edition of YAC Protocols takes advantage of the many new advances in biology since the publication of the first edition, including the sequencing of the human genome, the genomes of a wide variety of other organisms, and the increased use of transgenic animals for understanding the molecular basis of human and animal disease. This volume also provides a much-needed update on the new techniques currently employed and to help redefine and illustrate the important roles still to be played by yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) technologies in the postgenomic age.
YAC Protocols, Second Edition, demonstrates the enormous potential use of YAC technologies in understanding the role of genetics in maintaining health, promoting pathogenesis, and conferring susceptibility to disease. Offering solutions to the many problems that have plagued researchers, this new edition allows for the wider and more efficient use of YAC technologies for the analysis of genetic and pathogenic causes of human disease.

Book Description
In YAC Protocols experienced researchers offer a comprehensive collection of their easily reproducible and proven methods for analyzing complex human, animal, and plant genomes. The step-by-step protocols cover all aspects of yeast artificial chromosomes, ranging from the construction of YAC libraries to their storage, screening, and database management, and to their use in such specialist applications as the transfer of YACs to mammalian cells and the isolation of coding sequences from YACs.
YAC Protocols allows workers to add promising approaches adapted from yeast genetics to their personal repertoires and to introduce novel techniques emerging from the accumulating experience with YACs as a tool for genome analysis. Its extensive notes and background information not only significantly enhance the effective use of the methods, but also provide a valuable hands-on resource for those wishing to adapt protocols to suit their own applications.

Book Description
What is it like to do field biology in a world that exalts experiments and laboratories? How have field biologists assimilated laboratory values and practices, and crafted an exact, quantitative science without losing their naturalist souls?
In Landscapes and Labscapes, Robert E. Kohler explores the people, places, and practices of field biology in the United States from the 1890s to the 1950s. He takes readers into the fields and forests where field biologists learned to count and measure nature and to read the imperfect records of "nature's experiments." He shows how field researchers use nature's particularities to develop "practices of place" that achieve in nature what laboratory researchers can only do with simplified experiments. Using historical frontiers as models, Kohler shows how biologists created vigorous new border sciences of ecology and evolutionary biology.

Book Description
This application-oriented monograph presents a comprehensive theoretical and numerical investigation of all types of oscillators and bifurcations (such as Hopf, Bogdanov-Takens, Bautin, and homoclinic) generated by the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. The wide diversity of the oscillators as used in electrophysiology, biology, and engineering is emphasised. Various asymptotic behaviours are revealed. The dramatic changes in oscillations connected with the emergence or disappearance of concave limit cycles are investigated. Codimension of bifurcations is minutely analysed. New types of codimension one and two bifurcations of planar systems were found. A detailed global bifurcation diagram concludes the work.
Audience: This volume will be of interest to researchers and graduate students whose work involves the mathematics of biology, ordinary differential equations, approximations and expansions, cardiac electrophysiology, biological transport, and cell membranes.

The best (and only) available translation of Schiller plays.......1998-11-24
This is an awesome collection of truly outstanding translations of Schiller's drama, five plays total, including "The Robbers," "Don Carlos," "Mary Stuart," "Intrigue and Love," and "The Maid of Orleans." This whopper of a 700-page volume will allow the modern reader to see exactly why Schiller is justly ranked with Goethe as the second giant of German literature. For anyone interested in an inexplicably neglected major figure in world literature, this book is indispensable!

Book Description
Don Carlos and Mary Stuart, two of German literature's greatest dramas, deal with the timeless issues of power, freedom, and justice. Dating from 1787 and 1800 respectively, one play was written before the French Revolution, the other in its aftermath. Both dramatize periods of crisis in sixteenth-century Europe, and in doing so reflect Schiller's passionate engagement with the great themes of his own age - justice, power, freedom of conscience, legitimacy of government. A youthful work, Don Carlos shows the victory of the forces of reaction over the representatives of a new age. Mary Stuart shows the struggle of the Scottish queen in her last days of her life, not only for her freedom, but also for peace with her conscience, and that of her English rival, Elizabeth I, with the challenge of ruling justly. A vivid imaginative experience when read, these plays, with their starkly contrasting characters and thrilling confrontations, also demonstrate Schiller's brilliant stagecraft. These new translations into blank verse are accurate, elegant, and playable. The introduction, notes, and chronology set the plays in their cultural and intellectual background, while a family tree explains the historical relationship bewteen Don Carlos and Mary Stuart.
Customer Reviews:
The work of a genius.......1998-08-07
It's hard to find words which do justice to these wonderful plays. Schiller is a genius, a german Shakespeare. The plays are full of fascinating characters, deep emotions and humanist ideals. Don't be surprised if you find youself sympathising with and understanding the enemys of the heroes. In Philipp II and Elizabeth I the inner torments of rulers surounded by false friends (Leichester, Alba), idealists(Posa, the spirit of liberty and friendship) and caught in there own fears, hopes and loves is poignantly illustrated. All in wonderfull words - read it in german if you possibly can! If you can't, DON'T miss it in english!!! You may find yourself identifying the situations in your life with those of the characters. These are plays to read over and over - always something new and worthwhile to discover.
