best of the bunch.......2003-09-13
This guide is the best of all the ones available. The directions are clear and easy to follow. And there is lots of info about stuff you see along the way. Things you don't find in any of the other books. The pictures are beautiful too. An inspiration to hikers of all levels.
Doesn't know her left from her right.......2003-04-08
The walks in this book are lovely. However, the directions are hopeless. I have had several people try to follow the routes described, and the consensus is that the author cannot tell her left from her right.
As a general guide, wherever she says go left, go right and then you will get to the points she describes.
The book is a waste of space in a rucksack - buy something else.
This Is The One.......1998-06-15
A Vancouver group of friends decided to start walking and hiking for pesonal challenge and a chance to enjoy the beautiful place they lived in. For a few months they limped along with few, outdated, and poorly described hiking guides. One of them read about Dawn Hanna's new book on the internet, purchased it, and I'd like to thank Dawn for providing the kind of guide we've been looking for.
This easy-to-use, fits-your-pocket gem provides well-described directions and levels of challenge, along with maps and climatic information, as well as wonderful legends & history; Dawn's passion for hiking the area is inspiring. This book is a got-to-take item for your hikes, only preceded by your water bottle.

Book Description
Biological Rhythms and Photoperiodism in Plants brings together disparate subject areas into one accessible text of interest to all plant biologists. In this comprehensive volume, leading international researchers review our current understanding of circadian rhythms from a broad perspective. The book begins with a description of well known rhythmic processes such as gene expression, stomatal guard cell opening, and the movement of petals and leaves. Photoperiodic responses such as dormancy, bulbing, tuberization and flowering are then discussed in terms of their rhythmic behaviour.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Best of the Bay Area.......2007-04-25
Just last week I was hiking the in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and surrounding lands with my father, on vacation from Idaho. While on a guided tour of the Point Bonita Lighthouse, the ranger remarked that GGNRA was the single most visited national park in the country. I was somewhat surprised. Usually that honor goes to Great Smokey Mountains, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and similarly well known locales. But as the ranger pointed out, just about every time a Bay area resident goes to walk their dog, they notch a visit into this fabulous urban parkland. Indeed, with over 77,000 acres situated next to and among one of the largest urban centers in the world, GGNRA offers some great recreational opportunities for local residents and those visiting from out of town. If you are not sure where to begin exploring this region, this guidebook published by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is an excellent place to start.
This book is divided, like the park itself, into two basic regions: lands south and north of the Golden Gate Bridge. All the major attractions in each region receive a detailed write up discussing the history and recreational opportunities in the area, and there is so much to discuss. Land's End, the dramatic penninsula headlands, Fort Mason, the old growth redwood grove at Muir Redwoods National Monument, Stinson Beach, Tennessee Valley and Alcatraz Island are all described, along with many other destinations. Walking tours are included for many of the landmarks. Sharp color photos, detailed maps, and well written side bars on natural and local history round out what has to be the single best guide to the region.
So if you are planning a trip to San Francisco or surrounding regions, by all means get this book and experience some of the (truly) wild side this metropolis has to offer. From military history (indeed, we have the military to thank for keeping so much of the land undeveloped before it became parkland) to tidepooling, hiking and biking, this book has it all. I cannot recommend it enough. As an aside, readers should note the Amazon publication information is not entirely accurate. The second edition was published in 2004, not 2000. This book, and the recreational opportunities it showcases, are far more current than the Amazon page implies.

The seventh edition of Curriculum Planning is a collection of readings that presents the knowledge, skills, and alternative strategies needed by curriculum planners and teachers at all levels of education, from early childhood through adulthood. The book offers a variety of learning experiences for students with wide-ranging interests, learning styles and backgrounds.
Made up of ten chapters, the first six emphasize the development of knowledge and skills in the four bases of the curriculum - social forces, human development, learning, and knowledge and cognition. The last four chapters emphasize the application of curriculum planning skills for educational programs for children, early, middle, and late adolescents, and adult and senior learners. At all levels, current issues, innovations, and trends are examined from both theoretical and practical viewpoints.
For anyone interested in curriculum development and planning.
Customer Reviews:
Are you kidding me?.......2004-03-01
Holy sweet Jesus this book is terrible. First allow me to sum up what's being paid for: Journal Articles that are available online at many libraries. The actual content of the book is rather sparse; chapter 4 has 5 pages about learning styles before the articles begin. The articles are loosely tied to the chapter theme, but overall provide little cohesive content. Pompous Education professors love this book because it satisfies the most basic tenant of educational training: It is absolutely useless to the vast majority of educators.
Complete, Current, and Relevant.......2002-06-02
The title for this review should be self-explanatory. The authors/editors provide a veritable plethora of writings providing viewpoints on different and pertinent curriculum elements. It's a must textbook for curriculum courses and an excellent resource for administrators and curriculum developers

Responsive Teaching.......2006-03-22
Responsive Teaching: An Ecological Approach to Classroom Patterns of Language, Culture, and Thought, the fourth title in this series, provides a conceptual basis for recognizing the classroom as an ecology of lingistic and cultural patterns that should be taken into account as part of the teacher's professional decision making. It argues that the orchestration of classroom behavior cannot be separated from the students primary culture. Chapters discuss the metaphorical nature of language and thought, primary socialization, non-verbal communication, framing and social control, the classroom as an ecology of power, culturally responsive supervision, and educating teachers for the 21st century - all from a cultural and linguistic point of view.
The authors challenge the Cartesian tradition of viewing the student as a culture-free individual, and the classroom as a problem in management. They draw on Gregory Bateson's ideas help to illuminate student behavior as a form of communication about social relationships - one that relies heavily on culturally embedded patterns - and to reveal the classroom as a mental ecology where thought processes of others are encoded in the metaphorical language used to introduce new concepts. The book emphasises that responsive teaching involves being sensitive to how the ecology of patterns (behavior and thought) reflects cultural differences and may be a source of miscommunication and alienation.

Description:
This study investigated the development of academic self-concept and language achievement from Grade 7 to Grade 12 by repeated assessment of 2826 Flemish adolescents in 50 secondary schools. Latent growth curve modeling showed that both girls and boys experience a declining academic self-concept during the period of secondary education and that girls declined at a faster rate. Furthermore, girls were shown to have an increase in Dutch language achievement over time, whereas boys showed a decrease in middle years, followed by an increase from Grade 9 on. The multivariate multilevel growth curve model suggested that the evolution of academic self-concept was not related to the evolution in achievement, neither at the individual level, nor at the school level. There is, however, a positive relation between students' academic self-concept and their achievement, the magnitude of which decreased throughout secondary school. At the school level, the correlation is small, but also positive, except for the girls from Grade 10 on. The results are discussed in relation to the reciprocal effects model and the developmental perspective regarding the self-concept/achievement relation.

Handbook of Ecological Indicators for Assessment of Ecosystem Health
ASIN: 0849328225 |
Book Description
Acknowledging the present inability to determine objectively the status and trends among estuarine ecosystems, the environmental research community has recently stepped up efforts to develop and evaluate meaningful estuarine indicators. This goal requires the effort of researchers from a broad spectrum of disciplines. In order to expedite this initiative, many of the world's leading estuarine scientists came together to present their views at the 2003 Estuarine Indicators Workshop. Derived from this conference of leading estuarine scientists, Estuarine Indicators presents the principles, concepts, practical use, and application of indicators in estuarine research and management practices. Topics include: the theory behind environmental indicators and their presumed attributes; the methods and protocols of indicator development and evaluation; a presentation of effective and ineffective indicator examples; and discussions of the future directions in research and management practices. This is an ideal reference for researchers, scientists, and students from any field dealing with estuaries and estuarine ecosystems. Its introductory-level chapters are accessible to novices and seasoned experts alike, and the applications and interpretation of research data suit the needs of environmental managers. This is a truly multidisciplinary, comprehensive compendium upon which future research will undoubtedly be built.

Description:
The Sado Estuary in Portugal is a good example of a site where human pressures and ecological values collide with each other. An overall contamination assessment has never been conducted in a way that is comprehensible to estuary managers. One of the aims of this work was to select different types of index to aggregate and assess heavy metal contamination in the Sado Estuary in an accessible manner. Another aim was to use interpolation surfaces per metal to compare and gauge the results of the indices and to assess the contamination separately per metal. Seventy-eight stations were sampled within the main bay of the estuary and a set of heavy metals and metalloids was established, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, Hg, Al, Zn and As. The sediment fine fraction content, organic matter and redox potential were also analysed. Various indices for contamination, background enrichment and ecological risk were used, tested, compared and performance-evaluated. All metals and metalloids were strongly correlated, and the indices appear to reflect heavy metal variability satisfactorily. Difficulties were found in some indices regarding boundary definition (minimum and maximum) and comparability with other estuaries, thus better methods of standardization should be a priority issue. According to the index that has the highest performance score within the group of ecological risk indices - the Sediment Quality Guideline Quotient - only 3% of the stations are highly contaminated and register a high potential for observing adverse biological effects, whereas 47% display moderate contamination. This index can be complemented with the contamination index, which allows more site-specific and accurate information on contaminant levels. If the aim of work on contamination evaluation is to assess the overall contamination of a study area, the indices are highly appropriate. For spatial and source evaluation per metal, interpolation surfaces should also be used.

Description:
Using Tampa Bay, FL as an example, we explored the potential for using MODIS medium-resolution bands (250- and 500-m data at 469-, 555-, and 645-nm) for estuarine monitoring. Field surveys during 21-22 October 2003 showed that Tampa Bay has Case-II waters, in that for the salinity range of 24-32 psu, (a) chlorophyll concentration (11 to 23 mg m^-^3), (b) colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficient at 400 nm (0.9 to 2.5 m^-^1), and (c) total suspended sediment concentration (TSS: 2 to 11 mg L^-^1) often do not co-vary. CDOM is the only constituent that showed a linear, inverse relationship with surface salinity, although the slope of the relationship changed with location within the bay. The MODIS medium-resolution bands, although designed for land use, are 4-5 times more sensitive than Landsat-7/ETM+ data and are comparable to or higher than those of CZCS. Several approaches were used to derive synoptic maps of water constituents from concurrent MODIS medium-resolution data. We found that application of various atmospheric-correction algorithms yielded no significant differences, due primarily to uncertainties in the sensor radiometric calibration and other sensor artifacts. However, where each scene could be groundtruthed, simple regressions between in situ observations of constituents and at-sensor radiances provided reasonable synoptic maps. We address the need for improvements of sensor calibration/characterization, atmospheric correction, and bio-optical algorithms to make operational and quantitative use of these medium-resolution bands.

Description:
The sublethal effect of naphthalene was studied on the physiology of a mud crab Scylla serrata. The 96h acute toxicity of naphthalene was determined and found to be 28mg1^-^1 (LC"1"0"0), 18mg1^-^1 (LC"5"0), 10mg1^-^1 (LC"0) respectively. The 30 days sublethal effect (LC"0) 9mg1^-^1, 8mg1^-^1, 10mg1^-^1, of naphthalene was investigated in the crab S. serrata with reference to oxygen consumption and changes in the activity of respiratory enzymes. The results indicated that naphthalene caused disturbance in the normal physiology of the crab. The bioaccumulation of naphthalene was also investigated in gills, hepatopancreas, haemolymph and ovary. The consumption of oxygen increased in the naphthalene medium when compared with that of the crabs exposed to naphthalene free medium. A decreased trend in the activity of respiratory enzymes such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), @a-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (@a-KDH) and glutathione (GSH) were recorded in the hepatopancreas, ovary and gills of S. serrata for all the tested concentrations of naphthalene and the results were analyzed for their significance.

Description:
The need for new tools to assess the environmental status of coastal and estuarine systems encouraged Borja et al. [Mar. Pollut. Bull. 40 (2000) 1100] to develop a new index, the AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), which needs to be tested as much as possible in different geographical areas to assess its applicability. This index was applied in the Mondego estuary (western coast of Portugal) together with the Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, Simpson, and W-statistic indices, which are widely used in detecting the effects of marine pollution. Results show that, in some cases, the AMBI provides a more accurate assessment of environmental conditions than the other indices, which were influenced by the dominance of certain species, allowing us to consider it as a promising tool to characterize marine and estuarine environmental quality.

Description:
Phytoplankton biomass, as chlorophyll (Chl) a, and net ecosystem production (NEP), were modeled using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Chl a varied seasonally and along a saline gradient throughout the Neuse River (North Carolina). NEP was extremely dynamic in the Trout River (Florida), with phototrophic or heterotrophic conditions occurring over short-term intervals. Physical and chemical variables, arising from meteorological and hydrological conditions, created spatial and/or temporal gradients in both systems and served as interacting predictors for the trends/patterns of Chl a and NEP. ANNs outperformed comparable linear regression models and reliably modeled Chl a concentrations less than 20@mgL^-^1 and NEP values, denoting the apparent non-linear interactions among abiotic and indicator variables. ANNs underestimated Chl a concentrations greater than 20@mgL^-^1, likely due to the periodicity of data acquisition not being sufficient to generalize system variability, the designated 'lag' effect for variables not being adequate to portray estuarine flow dynamics, the exclusion of (one or more) variables that would have improved prediction, and/or an unrealistic expectation of network performance. Variables indicative of meteorological and hydrological forcing and/or proxy measurements of phytoplankton had the greatest relative impact on prediction of Chl a and NEP. Except for their predictive capability, ANNs might appear to be of limited value for ecological applications and problem solving; interpreting the absolute impact of and/or interacting relationships among network variables is intrinsically difficult. Statistical methods or 'rule extraction' algorithms that convey comprehensible network interpretation are needed prior to the routine use of ANNs in programs assessing and/or forecasting the response of biotic indicators to perturbation or for a means to discern estuarine function.

Description:
In the face of global change, declines in environmental quality are of increasing concern, especially in shallow coastal areas, densely populated and commonly affected by nutrient enrichment. The warm temperate Mondego estuary (Western Portugal), in common with many other shallow estuarine areas, is exhibiting increased macroalgal growth due to nutrient enrichment. The increase of macroalgal biomass and possible shift of other primary producers resulting from eutrophication, may have profound effects on estuarine trophic chain. The present paper examined the performance of a holistic Stochastic Dynamic Methodology (SDM) in predicting the tendencies of three representative trophic levels as a response to the increase of nutrient concentrations. Therefore, the proposed methodology has been developed by focusing on the interactions between conceptually isolated key-components, such as primary producers (macroalgae and seagrass), some relevant benthic macroinvertebrates, wading birds and changes in local physicochemical conditions. The dynamic model developed was preceded by a conventional multivariate statistical procedure (stepwise multiple regression analysis) performed to discriminate the significant relationships between prevailing biological and environmental variables. Since this statistical analysis is static, the dataset recorded from the field included true gradients of habitat changes. The data used in the model construction was sampled between January 1993 and September 1995 in three areas of the estuary mudflats for benthic macroinvertebrates, macroalgae, environmental and physicochemical factors and from October 1993 to October 1994 for wading birds. The model validation was based on independent data collected in two different periods, from January 1996 to January 1997 and from February 1999 to April 2000 for all the variables selected. Overall, the simulation results are encouraging since they seem to demonstrate the model reliability in capturing the trophic dynamics of the studied estuary by predicting the behavioural pattern for the most part of the components selected under a very complex and variable environmental scenario.

Book Description
This book explores a wide range of mathematical concepts relating to regularly repeating surface decoration and provides a comprehensive means of classifying patterns and tilings. It covers issues from basic concepts of symmetry to more complex issues such as graph theory, group theory, and topology. The author elaborately illustrates the concepts, thereby rendering this complex area-previously best understood by mathematicians and crystallographers-accessible to artists and designers. Although it focuses principally on the characteristics of surface-pattern designs, the material addresses all types of surface designs, including textiles, wallpapers, and building and wrapping materials. This book is an extremely valuable guide for textile designers, artists, designers, architects, and anyone interested in the geometric aspects and applications of surface designs, patterns, and tilings.

History Revisited.......2005-01-15
EBONY RISING is a preeminent collection of short fiction written during the Harlem Renaissance Era. What makes this book stand out from other anthologies with similar subject matter is that the book features a well-planned organizational structure and includes many lesser known writers and works. Beginning with the preface, editor Craig Gable showcases his breadth of knowledge of the era and it is clear that this book will not only be good reading, but also educational.
The selections are organized by the year of publication, with each year (or group of years) serving as its own section. At the beginning of each section a timeline of significant historical events and African-American literary accomplishments is included to help readers get a sense of the times in which the writings were published. In addition to including writers often omitted from anthologies, such as Eloise Bibb Thompson, and J. Saunders Redding, the collection has a good balance between male and female featured authors. At the end of the book there is a detailed listing of sources for further reading, brief biographic sketches of the featured authors, and a handy chart that highlights many of the major themes in the included works.
EBONY RISING is one of the best anthologies I have read. With clear organization, a unique selection of authors, and the inclusion of historical information, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in literature, particularly those with an interest in African-American literature or the Harlem Renaissance. This book is a refreshing yet educational treat.

What a treasury!.......2004-09-11
I like everything about this collection: the fact that it encompasses 52 stories covering over 27 years and a wide variety of content and styles; is gender balanced; presents works by both the famous and the lesser knowns beyond the actual boundaries of New York (plus lesser-known stories by the famous); and its chronological arrangement that allows the era to "grow." With the help of the author's preface, I dove right into the stories not previously anthologized, like Mercedes Gilbert's hilarious "Why Adam Ate the Apple" (with the memorable line "He started to rave, and jes' raised Cain.") I was not disappointed. Additional useful resources include a history of the era and a checklist of common issues, topics and plot components. This indispensable resource for the study of American literature belongs on every library shelf.
