5 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Work for the Committed Landowner.......2004-04-11

I am a property owner in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This flora has been indispensable to me as a guide by which to restore my land. Its keys are, for the most part, comprehensible and useful to the amateur. Its detailed references to where the plants were found are a blessing in a region with enormous climate and soil variations. It is purely a scientific work by a man who loved the land.

The Santa Cruz Mountains have an incredibly complex flora. They are located at the confluence of three major botanical regions: North Coast, Central Coast, and Inland. As a consequence, a single parcel can have a bewildering array of plants. On my fourteen acres alone, I have distinguished over 240 species, of which 60 are exotics. Without a good flora, I would be lost, killing things that are native and letting exotics pass simply because the task of weeding is so physically and intellectually overwhelming.

The rewards of this kind of work can be equally overwhelming, and I owe a personal debt to botanists such as Thomas. I am astonished that this was but a graduate dissertation. I can only say that I wish his ability, integrity, and energy was more common.

Modern flora, although blessed with the benefit of DNA analysis, can be needlessly complicated with innumerable "subspecies" that, from my observations, may only be hybrids or simply variants based upon distinctions important only to the professional career of the botanist. Although Thomas' book may be in that respect somewhat dated, it is also a blessing. I am often faced with making distinctions on attributes belonging to separate "species" that are shared by individuals on the same parcel! Jepson, while equally indispensable and supposedly definitive, can, in that respect, be maddening. "Plants of the San Francisco Bay Region," by Beldeman and Kolzoff and "Coastal County Plants from Santa Cruz to Mendocino," by George Pikkaranien, although less comprehensive than Jepson, are, in some respects, more useful, if only because of the photographs and references to attrributes of typical habitat.

I use Thomas, Pikkaranien, and Beldeman/Kolzoff to get close with my identification, confirm it with the CalFlora web site (where the photographs are usually poor), and complete the identification process using Jepson, both the text and the online version, which sometimes don't agree. My only criticism of Thomas is that I wish there were more of those excellent drawings.

4 out of 5 stars Madrid Guidebooks Compared.......2001-12-28

I am an experienced traveler (30+ countries) who is nearing retirement and plan to travel extensively, who has recently become obsessed about finding "good" guidebooks. So this review is a comparison of the books I looked at for Madrid.

I started with the Insight Guide. I was seeking to get background, history, etc. The Insight Guides seem to vary enormously from one to the next in both quality and orientation. I think they are good for an entire country if you are trying to decide where in the country or what parts you want to see. I thought the guide for Madrid was useless. It provided very little information about the city or the culture. It seemed to be best if you were planning on moving to Madrid and wanted to find out the differences between the various suburban areas. I suggest you forget this one.

I looked at the Mini-Rough Guide. I didn't like the format and it was too terse for my taste. In my opinion, Rough Guide still needs to produce a guide for Madrid that is a regular, not a mini Rough Guide. The LP Guide to Madrid seemed pretty mediocre. The stiff covers also made it awkward to use or hold open to a particular page. The information and descriptions were inadequate compared to some other guides. The Eyewitness Guide to Madrid is, I think, the best overall guide to Madrid. (Generally I prefer Eyewitness guides for City's much more than as a guide for an entire country.) The maps are good, the pictures of the food and other items are very helpful. The hotels and restaurant sections were pretty good, but not great. If you are looking for hostels, you will need the LP guide. Eyewitness does not give great historical depth, but it gives you some, probably enough for most tourists. Guide Books are not the best source for detailed historical and cultural information anyway. The Time Out guide was almost like a tourist's yellow pages, primarily a listing of hotels, restaurants, sites, services, etc. It had the best listing of restaurants and hotels and covered all price ranges. It wasn't as good as Eyewitness is describing the things to see and do.

I ended up getting the Eyewitness Guide to use while sightseeing, supplemented by the Time Out guide for picking hotels, restaurants and being able to look up things. Another reviewer recommended this same combination in order to visit Tapas bars. I'm not that much into Tapas, but I still think these two are the best combo.

Incidentally, the Spain Rough and LP guides Madrid sections do not cover Madrid as well as the Madrid-only guides. You are looking at a 60-page section, compared to the Madrid-only guides of around 300 pages length.

5 out of 5 stars Have to take it with you.......2001-03-17

If you are going to Madrid there are two books minimum you must read before hand and take with you: Eyewitness Guide Madrid, and this Time Out Guide. I was in Madrid last year and took the previous version of the Time Out with me: I'm going back this year and bought the newer updated version just because it is so good.

To understand why so good, you need to know that Madrid has the greatest number of bars and restaurants per capita of any city in the world. In Spain, the people of Madrid are given the nickname gatos, which means cats, because they stay up all night. They go to work at 8am, leave at noon, go home and sleep after the big meal of the day, return to work at 5pm, work until 9, leave work and go to tapas bars, where they have one drink and a snack, move to the next. Keep moving until around 11pm, when they stop for dinner, then it is off to a disco club, flamenco club, or a bar. But the same m.o.: in for a half hour or hour, then move on again. At 4:30 am on the weekends there are traffic jams because the streets are so busy. And I saw only one person who was drunk, that person undoubtable a tourist. The locals have fun, but behave themselves.

This is why the Time Out guide is so valuable. Even if you dont want to stay up until 4 am, the Time Out guide assumes that just as important as the monuments and art musems, the lifestyle is a 'must do' part of your stay. The book has 109 pages devoted to details on cafes, bars, arts and enteratinment. There is another 22 pages just on shopping; the 18 pages of hotel listings are detailed and a good source of information. The first 34 pages do a solid job of covering history, architecture, and modern Madird; 44 well done pages on sightseeing sights. Although the Eyewitness Guides usually win the best map award, the maps in this guide I think are acutally a little better. Slightly larger and they include the bus routes.

Two of my favorite places I found by reading this book, both on the same street 4 doors apart. The Time Out guide says "CARDAMOMO, open 9pm-4am daily. If you've got any interest in flamenco or salsa, this is an essential stop. The dancing varies from eye-catchingly sensual to reassuringly clumsy. No one here gives fig about such niceties, and the gitano flavour ensures the music can't be resisted for long."

The other is "EL BURLADERO open 3 to 3:30am daily. A packed two-storey locale off Plaza Santa Anna that's regularly full of copupes swinging each other round to flamenco, shouting Ole, and clapping. On the upper floor its calmer and a bit more space."

The descriptions are accurate, you wont find them in the other books. You would miss alot if you didn't have this book on your trip. When you go to Madrid, use the jet lag to your advantage; sleep in the middle of the day and early evening, get up at 10, go out for dinner, wander the Plaza Santa Ana area, catch a flamenco show, and see if Madrid isn't one of your all time favorite cities.

Most research in the life sciences involves a core set of molecular-based equipment and methods, for which there is no shortage of step-by-step protocols. Nonetheless, there remains an exceedingly high number of inquiries placed to commercial technical support groups, especially regarding problems.

Molecular Biology Problem Solver: A Laboratory Guide asks the reader to consider crucial questions, such as:

A unique question-based format reviews common assumptions and laboratory practices, with the aim of offering a firm understanding of how techniques and procedures work, as well as how to avoid problems. Some major issues explored by the book's expert contributors include:

This work presents a detailed study of linear abstract degenerate differential equations, using both the semigroups generated by multivalued (linear) operators and extensions of the operational method from Da Prato and Grisvard. The authors describe the recent and original results on PDEs and algebraic-differential equations, and establishes the analyzability of the semigroup generated by some degenerate parabolic operators in spaces of continuous functions.

I discovered this book when I was 14, and have reread it almost annually. Many of the books Perrin recommended have become favorites of mine also, and even when they haven't, this book is still worth it for Perrin's great writing and his deep affection and understanding of what the printed word can do. It's honest, refreshingly unpretentious, and compulsively readable. This book makes you happy to be alive and glad to be an inveterate reader. I highly, highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars From the Den of Literary Obscurity!.......2004-05-29

Even though I worked in a library for years and read dozens of books a month, I am ashamed to admit that I hadn't read any of Noel Perrin's recommendations outlined in "A Reader's Delight". I have now, though.

In essay after wonderful essay, Perrin uncovers gem after glorious gem. From Russian Sci-Fi ("Far Rainbow") to World War II memoirs ("When the Snow Comes, They Will Take You") , from lyrical fiction ("The Bottom of the Harbor") to the next-best-thing to Jane Austen ("The Semi-Attached Couple"), many of these books are out-of-print, some truly obscure, and all of them terrific.

Startling eclectic, Perrin discuses books from virtually every genre and he does so with grace and wit. There's tales of ancient China, old journals, satires, children's books and even a poem. This is guy who not only knows good books, but adores them, and he doesn't care where he finds them. In the introduction, Perrin tells about a professor he knew who cited the "Little House on the Prairie" books among his all time favorites, and Perrin makes it clear that true book-lovers know no snobbishness.

Some of these books will be a bit hard to track down, but most can be had by simply utilizing your local interlibrary loan program. In any case, "A Reader's Delight" is a must have for those who love a good read, not only for the recommendations but for Perrin's own stylish writing.

              Book Description

Passing along a passion for reading, like so many things we do as parents, happens somewhere in the push and pull of digging in and letting go, day in and day out, both because of and in spite of our efforts. During the years in which her children were learning to read, Jennie Nash's desire for them to succeed sometimes strayed into desperation, her hope often morphed into obsession and instead of helping, her resolve got in the way. As we discover in the pages of this warm and witty book, the magic moments came in their own sweet time and through the grace needed to see each child as a unique individual. Each chapter of Raising a Reader ends with personal, practical tips that spring directly from the narrative. A com-prehensive appendix describes the books mentioned in the text, offering insight and inspiration for parents, teachers, and librarians.

1 out of 5 stars Please get the author some chemical-balancing pills!.......2006-03-14

The concept of this book is good. Whether you have always loved reading, or have come to love books more as an adult, we all hope our children will share this love, so anything offering tips on this sounds great.

But this fally severely short, via the obvious personality disorder of the author.

In Chapter 2, she relays a story wherein she punished her TWO YEAR OLD for ripping a book's page. She went off on the kid like a lunatic and REMOVED EVERY SINGLE BOOK FROM THE CHILD'S GRASP FOR 3 DAYS, and did not give in, no matter how much the poor child sobbed. Said author then justifies putting a book's value over that of her child with the following: "...my mistake existed within a larger spirit of abundance and delight." HUH???? If that story itself is not bad enough, the author then refers us to another source where one can find justification for such "obsessively good intentions."

I was tempted at that point to stop reading there, but I urged myself to go on, hoping that this was an isolated, bizarre incident, and to forgive, since we are all imperfect humans. BIG MISTAKE.

The author's passive aggressive behavior shows itself in a later chapter. "She let me point to the words of the text as I read, WHICH SHE USUALLY HATED." So let me get this straight. You KNOW your child finds it distressing when you do this, yet...you do it anyway?????

Just one more example of the author's obvious mental difficulties is her openness in rushing her children to eat, "Emily is a v-e-r-y slow eater," and do their homework, yet...she ALLOWS them the LUXURY of not hurrying ONLY where reading is concerned. (So her kids have to eat at a rapid pace like wolves and rush through their homework, risking bad grades??)

This book is unreadable because the author is so unlikeable. I feel for her children.

But don't take my word for it. Borrow it from a library and see for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading for any parent of young children.......2005-04-14

Teaching a child to read, and getting that child to like reading, can be one of the most frustrating, and heartwarming, jobs for any parent. This book looks at one family's journey through such a process.

One of a parent's biggest wishes for their child is that they find something about which they are passionate, something on which they can build a life. For the parent, there is a fine line between passion and obsession, a line that is easy to cross.

It's hard to instill a love of books if the children don't have access to them. Regularly bring them to the local library, and let them take out a lot of books. If Child 2 doesn't progress in reading at the same rate as did Child 1, don't panic. Everyone progresses at their own speed.

Another way to instill a love of books is to set aside a reading period during the day. While the child reads a book, the parent should sit and read an adult book. The child will probably enter a phase in which they are interested in what the parent considers the children's literature equivalent of trash. Again, don't panic; they'll grow out of it.

Have faith in your child, especially if they are progressing too "slowly." Encouragement that the pieces will eventually fall into place is better than pushing. Realize that your children are individuals with different styles of reading.

Also included is a long list of reading suggestions for children of all ages. This book is a gem. It's very down to earth, and any parent can identify with it. For those parents worried that their child isn't reading "fast enough," take a deep breath, then read this book. It's time very well spent.

3 out of 5 stars Good tips, but..........2005-01-11

I'm also a bookaholic mom, so I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, I found the author's message in conflict with her actions and had a hard time getting past that. This book presents itself as a guide on how to pass along your passions without being overbearing or minimizing your child's other interests. Nash wants to be able to do this almost as desperately as she wants her daughters to find the same meaning in reading as she has. Both are admirable goals, but the pushy tone pushed me away.

In the chapter titled Grace, Nash paints the picture of her family relaxing in a snowed-in cabin, each one reading by the cozy fire. You can tell this moment, down to the hot chocolate and popcorn, has been a fantasy for her, and she just can't help nudging it towards reality. Nash defines grace as allowing moments like this to "just happen" and encourages her readers to do the same. But she didn't allow the moment to happen - as soon as her youngest, portrayed as the non-reader, finishes her snack, mom prompts her to "pick a book and come read next to me."

If anything, the book served as a cautionary tale for me - when it comes to passions I want to pass on to my daughter, I'm reminded how hard it is to keep yourself in check. That said, Nash seems to have come to that same conclusion intellectually and can share it with her readers, but just finds it difficult to put into practice herself (a very human trait). I gave it three stars because the author provides good tips like keeping a journal of the books your children enjoy, and great reference lists of titles and authors.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for moms, dads, and grandparents!!.......2003-10-02

5 out of 5 stars A Deep Breath & Big Hug for Parents of Beginning Readers.......2003-09-04

First it's talking, then walking, then potty training. Being a parent is all to often about comparing our kids and their accomplishements to other kids and theirs. When you're little ones start school things heat up even more as you compare their academic achievements and wonderdramatically if they are smart and if you can make them smarter. It's a vicous cycle -- and it can take all the fun out of learning to read, which arguably is one of life's greatest pleasures and rightfully should be a time of fun and exploration with your young child. Jennie Nash knows this. She is admittedly obsessed but candidly shares with us her journey from niggling, nagging, read-to-me Mom to locing, laughing, let's-snuggle-and-read-together Mom. It's a trip we all should take and she shows us how. She also offers lists, tips and tricks to reduce the stress and increase the peace during reading time, homework time and family time. This is a MUST read for anyone with kids under 10!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful selection of essays.......2007-07-11

I am using this book as a text for my Introduction to Philosophy class. It is simply an excellent selection of essays to introduce students to the various disciplines of philosophy. The preceding questions to each reading are thoughtful and well focused, but the simplicity of the book appeals to me. That, plus the essays which show that philosophical writing need not be dull!
