Great reading to help connect and understand mother earth...

and not only mother earth but everything. The book offers information, reflections and activities that will help the reader appreciate everything that is around them...and I mean everything...from the stars in the sky to the cells in your body.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2005-12-27

'Developing Ecological Consciousness' is brilliant and accessible to virtually anyone. Christopher Uhl has managed to write a book that is biologically informative and also personal, engaging, and poetic in its beauty. Through both fact and anecdote, he weaves the story of our deep interconnection with the planet and universe, and awakens in us a sense of what it really means to be human. This is an important and enjoyable read that I highly, highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars a book for all.......2005-01-19

From a multitude of perspectives (student, teacher, communicator, lover of the environment), this book speaks to the reader not only on a knowledge-based, fact-oriented level, but also (and possibly more importantly) to the most basic and essential needs of humanity. These needs include compassion, understanding, sustainability, and harmony and through the book, are translated into a sense of awakening, comprehension, hope, and tools to shape a universal ideal for a world in which we all hope to live. If there were ever to be a "required life text", I can only hope that this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars A hidden gem.......2004-12-06

This book is an exceptional book covering not just ecology as a science but also the need for humans to awaken to earth's beauty, its Being, and our relationship to it. The book is not a radical environmental one where humans must go back to tribal living, but a very thought out and even carrying book. It belongs on the shelf of humanistic and transpersonal students as well as integral philosophers. The only bad thing about the book is that it is so unknown.

Much has changed in the role and use of ornamental grasses over the past 100 years. Whereas turn-of-the-century gardeners had perhaps a dozen perennial grasses to choose from, today's gardeners have hundreds. Ornamental grasses now embody a huge array of textures, forms, sizes, colors, flowering times, and cultural adaptations. The Color Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses is intended for gardeners in a wide range of situations and climates, and draws from the experience and creativity of great gardens and gardeners around the world. It begins with an exploration of the unique aesthetics and appeal of ornamental grasses before moving on to a review of the families of grasses and a survey of grasses in their native habitats. Gardeners usually speak of "ornamental grasses" in the broad sense, including not only the true grasses but also related families of grass-like plants. Following this tradition, the book provides a detailed treatment of perennial grasses, rushes, and cattails, as well as selected bamboos. Written by horticulturist Rick Darke, this encyclopedia will be invaluable to nursery professionals, landscapers, and home gardeners.

Book Description

This encyclopedia by a distinguished American horticulturist is the most authoritative and best-illustrated reference ever published on ornamental grasses. Rick Darke has been studying and photographing grasses in gardens and native landscapes around the world for more than 20 years, and this book includes the best 500 photographs from his collection of nearly 15,000. At its heart is the illustrated alphabetical encyclopedia of important ornamental grasses, sedges, rushes, restios, cat-tails, and selected bamboos, with many plants illustrated in more than one season. Intended for gardeners in a wide range of situations and climates, this book is an invaluable tool for landscape architects, garden designers, nursery professionals, and home gardeners.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful, Encyclopedic Guide Full of Helpful Photos.......2006-03-10

Rick Darke's book is typical of his work. It is extremely well written, a detailed, very thorough guide to ornamental grasses, full of helpful pictures as well as information on growing and maintaining grasses. This book should be a classic for decades to come.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic.......2003-03-17

This is such a wonderful informational book... AND ... a gorgeous coffee table book. It is terrific from beginning to end! If you like or are interested in, or even thinking about Ornamental Grasses ... then THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU! I can't imagine anyone who has an interest in Ornamental Grasses NOT LOVING THIS BOOK, and would be delighted they purchased it. My only concern is that it is going to look dog-earred from my reading it over and over and over again ... which frankly takes away from its beauty on our coffee table.

5 out of 5 stars Buy 2 copies..........2001-01-24

This book is structured, written, photographed and edited with parallel purpose and effect: communication of the author's respect and regard for the book's subject and for its readers. Mr. Darke sets out to inform and does so with enconomy but in full course; when he instructs, he teaches the novice and gives pause to the critic; when he photographs he shows his passion and inspires with the nature and wonder of his subjects. The book is encyclopedic, yet its prose is always to the point with the agreeable dryness of a good, well-bodied wine. Credible, trustworthy, enlightening. This is the best gardening book I have ever read. Negatives? Only one: Mr. Darke's standards are unimpeachable; those of the book's typographer and designer, however, are not.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information, awesome photographs.......2000-01-29

Excellent and complete information about ornamental grasses. A great book.

Thirty pages on the botany, anatomy, and classification of grasses. Twenty pages on native habitat, thirty pages on designing with grasses, and twenty pages of growing and propagating grasses. 170 page encyclopedia listing 400+ species / varieties of grasses. Each species is described in a paragraph or two of text along side a clear photograph of the plant. In the back of the book, you find a 2 page glossary, 5 page bibliography, 2 page grass nursery listing, USDA and European hardiness maps, and a complete index of all grasses by common name. Very complete book.

As a bonus, the book is also filled with awesome photography.

If you garden with ornamental grasses, this book is a must buy. Excellent information, well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information and beautiful photos.......2000-01-03

If you have no grasses in your garden now, your yard will be transformed by this book. The cultural information is well researched and thorough, but it is the incredible photographs that will keep you reading. I often look up a particular grass and find myself still reading hour later.

Rick Darke's book is the best yet on the subject. The photographs show each plant in its season of interest and the information is well-researched and well-presented.

Rick's book is wonderfully comprehensive and has great illustrative photgraphs. The prose is honest, personable, and not confusing. This book has been instrumental in opening my eyes to the beautiful and diverse world of ornamental grasses, and I believe it will helpful to many a gardener in the processes of selecting and caring for ornamental grasses.

5 out of 5 stars Women's experiences in the West.......2003-09-22

In this collection, women tell in their own words how they survived life in the Western U.S. and whet the reader's appetite to know more. From aboriginal myth to journal entry to poetry to personal letters and more, the selections show what women's lives were really like on the cutting edges of custom and civilization, or the lack thereof. Together, the selections give a sense of the same-but-different paradox, that through the centuries these women faced similar challenges in a variety of locales. Their writings are revealing, emotional, and straightforward, even about the harshest conditions of life and death that they face.

The book's chronological arrangement makes finding specific material easy and generates a natural flow from piece to piece, which would also make it handy as a supplemental reader in a women's studies course. The length of each selection lends itself to reading as few or as many as time allows in your favorite comfy chair or on your commute.

                Book Description

This report contains the biological findings and conservation recommendations of an aquatic expedition along the Pastaza River, one of the least disturbed of the upper Amazon River tributaries. The scientific team discovered moderate to high species richness; they concluded that the area has high conservation potential because of its relative intactness—a product of its remoteness and the low density of human population nearby.

Reference, supplement, and textbook, this volume hits the trifecta of mathematical publishing. Careful analyses of second-order rational difference equations precede a discussion of potential global solutions and reams of thorny problems crying out for work. --Rob Lightner

                    Book Description

This self-contained monograph provides systematic, instructive analysis of second-order rational difference equations. After classifying the various types of these equations and introducing some preliminary results, the authors systematically investigate each equation for semicycles, invariant intervals, boundedness, periodicity, and global stability. Of paramount importance in their own right, the results presented also offer prototypes towards the development of the basic theory of the global behavior of solutions of nonlinear difference equations of order greater than one. The techniques and results in this monograph are also extremely useful in analyzing the equations in the mathematical models of various biological systems and other applications. Each chapter contains a section of open problems and conjectures that will stimulate further research interest in working towards a complete understanding of the dynamics of the equation and its functional generalizations-many of them ideal for research projects or Ph.D. theses. Clear, simple, and direct exposition combined with thoughtful uniformity in the presentation make Dynamics of Second Order Rational Difference Equations valuable as an advanced undergraduate or a graduate-level text, a reference for researchers, and as a supplement to every textbook on difference equations at all levels of instruction.

                        Book Description

This collection brings together essays by established commentators on Larkin's work and by younger critics: from England, Northern Ireland, the USA, Canada, Belgium and Hungary. Individual essays examine Larkin's novels and poetry in the light of psychoanalytical, postmodern, postcolonial and Bakhtinian theories. This collection shows that Larkin's work continues to yield fresh and sometimes surprising readings.

This text marries lucid, idiomatic, modern text to the movement and rough power of the original Anglo-Saxon verse. Explainatory Notes are pithy and helpful, analysis is direct and interesting, and the material itself is breathtaking. The poetry's rough, rude meter drives inexorably forward with the steady throb of a beating heart or a column of troops, marching with a tramp-tramp-tramp inexorably onward, onward, onward. An amazing read--"Widsith," "The Fates of Man," and "The Battle of Maldon" deserve especial commendation.

The poems in this, D. J. Enright's third book since his Collected Poems 1987, include remembrances of things and people past, and rueful glances at things present. Here are the peculiar preoccupations of age, its fears, and its reactions, cantankerous, incredulous, sorrowful; and some evidence of the licence that age avails itself of as amour propre ebbs away.
