Neat book!!!.......2003-09-07

I always wondered what happened during winter - how does so much spring forth in springtime when its so quiet over the winter. This book gives us a terrific foundation for understanding all that. There are chapters on trees and what's going on inside them, "winter weeds," insects and how they overwinter in their different forms, and mammals and what they're doing to survive. Its just so absolutely amazing. There are activities throughout the book as well so it doesn't need to be just a nice winter read but a nice chance to get outside and explore too!

The systems movement is made up of many systems societies as well as of disciplinary researchers and researches, explicitly or implicitly focusing on the subject of systemics, officially introduced in the scientific community fifty years ago. Many researches in different fields have been and continue to be sources of new ideas and challenges for the systems community. To this regard, a very important topic is the one of EMERGENCE. Between the goals for the actual and future systems scientists there is certainly the definition of a general theory of emergence and the building of a general model of it.

The goal of this book, is to recall to the systems community an important challenge to be dealt with in the immediate future: the study and characterization of general features of what is commonly qualified as ` emergence', chiefly in complex systems such as biological and cognitive ones. Such a topic was a fundamental one at the very beginning of the systemic movement, and to it the founding fathers, such as Von Bertalanffy, Ashby and Von Foerster, devoted most efforts. In more recent times, however, the interests shifted towards an empirical study of systemic properties characterizing human organizations, and the subject of emergence was partly abandoned. Notwithstanding, the understanding of what is emergence, and of the circumstances which allow for its occurrence within a complex system, is of crucial importance for systemics. Namely all systemic properties - the ones which allow a system to behave as a whole and not as an aggregate of constituents - are just emergent properties.

Vidal was an enfant terrible in the 1940s and a marginalized homosexual in the 1950s. As Edgar Box he wrote mysteries and as a screenwriter he penned the script for Ben-Hur. In 1960 he ran for Congress. In the 1990s, he appeared in films such as "Gattaca", "Bob Roberts", and "Shadow Conspiracy". His essay collection "United States: Essays 1952-1992", which features 114 pieces on everything from Howard Hughes to French literature, won the National Book Award.

Vidal proves himself here to be a witty, acerbic, cantankerous conversationalist, one who is willing to --- and often eager to --- defy conventional wisdom and lacerate the tired clichés inherent in both politics and literature. A defiant political insider who is related to both the Gores and the Kennedys, he is a proud Leftist who nevertheless does not hesitate to slash at party orthodoxy when he deems it necessary.

Unique, Consistent, A Gem.......2007-07-24

Being more familiar with Vidal the personality than Gore the author, I was fascinated by this series of interviews that took place over decades. He is incredibly bright, witty and insightful. He is also very consistent in his stories from interview to interview. It was a pleasure to read.

A Fun Collection.......2006-07-18

Gore Vidal is one of America's wittiest and intelligent commentators (besides a first class novelist and essayist). This collection of interviews given between the years 1960 and 2003 are presented chronologically which allows the reader to watch how Vidal's views and opinions develop and shift. Being a collection of interviews many of the anecdotes get to be a bit repetitious. Other than that, the collection covers a wide range of subjects -- American history, the craft of writing, the state of literature, television, movies, and politics of all kinds. And all subjects, Gore Vidal gives a lot of food for thought.

As always, Gore Vidal is direct,honest and penetrating in his perceptions of the American and human cultural experience. Who do we have to fill this gap when he is gone?

In 11 interviews from 1960 to 2003, Vidal talks about sex, religion, the movies, politics, literature--in short, everything that makes life interesting. Lots of gems scattered throughout. Vidal is America's greatest living man of letters. Not since Edmund Wilson have we had such a great critic, and the two of them along with H.L. Mencken comprise the three great public intellectuals of 20th-century America. Hear America's greatest public intellectual talk in this new volume. The only disappointment you'll feel is when the conversation runs out at the end.

I wrote VIEWS with Gore Vidal almost twenty years ago. It is a delight to see that it has been a source of information for various scholars throughout these many years. I arranged the book in a new way for doing interviews, putting Vidal into a dramatic setting where he had to answer questions from more than twenty of us engaged in interviewing him. I myself interviewed him off and on for more than three years. Reviewers at the time called my format a new kind of Mega-interview form. I recently included material from VIEWS in a huge 750-page study that will be published by Edwin Mellen Press in 2001, a work to be known as GORE VIDAL: A MENIPPEAN SATIRIST. Vidal is America's greatest satirist--ever! And those people who read VIEWS will see that Vidal spares very few his quick thrusts of ridicule to bring them down to earth for a good laugh--at their expense, of course.
