Parents happy.......2002-03-06
I bought this for my parents as they had recently moved from California to Conn. They love this book as it has allowed them to find some great bedroom communities nearby.
A true review would be from someone who knows the area, but for outsiders this was a great purchase.
Book Description
The Twentieth-Century World and Beyond: An International History Since 1900, Fifth Edition, explores the history of modern relations between the U.S., Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The book's unique analytical framework--which focuses on the relationships between these countries rather than on their individual histories--helps readers to easily examine how the nations of the world have interacted since the beginning of the last century. Extensively revised in this fifth edition, The Twentieth-Century World and Beyond reflects the latest scholarship and also features photographs for the first time--more than fifty throughout the text. The new edition addresses such issues as refugees and stateless persons, human rights, the environment, and the events of September 11, 2001. Updated to include the war on terrorism, military action in Iraq, and the causes and consequences of globalization, this edition also explores the expanding role of nongovernmental organizations, the threat of AIDS to world order, narcotics trafficking, and environmental degradation. Examining a wide range of countries, The Twentieth-Century World and Beyond, Fifth Edition, is ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses in twentieth-century international history, twentieth-century world history, and international relations.

The Twentieth Century World: An International History.......2006-01-12
The Twentieth Century World opens with a prologue that examines international relations at the outset of the twentieth century and sets the stage for the rest of the book. The book's three major sections then examine the period bracketed by the two world wars, which was characterized by German expansionist aspirations and attempts by the other major powers to contain them, the cold war era characterized by superpower rivalry, and the post-cold war era characterized by increasing disorder in international relations.
Author William Keylor is consistently strong in describing how geopolitical forces - geography, demographics, technology, and finance - affect national development and international relations. He shows that political arrangements need to be consistent with the operation of these forces to be successful. But he does not imagine that international relations are determined entirely by objective forces: he recognizes that ideas are important too. For example, because it holds itself out as a model of democracy, the United States is judged by the same ideals that it professes. The ideologies of democracy and national self-determination advanced by the United States have not eliminated its self-interested behavior but they have constrained it. Keylor also recognizes the role of leadership in international relations. For example, he describes how competent and farsighted leadership in many Asian countries has helped produce impressive economic growth over a period of many decades, lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and exerting pressure on neighboring countries to adopt similar export-oriented policies.
In fact, I found his explanation of development processes in East Asia to be particularly illuminating. He describes how Japan pioneered a development path based on trade and government coordination of large, oligarchic export companies. Japan first specialized in textiles and other manufactures that relied on cheap labor. By postponing consumption and sustaining a high rate of savings and investment over an extended period of time, the Japanese achieved a comparative advantage in accumulating capital for investment in capital-intensive manufacturing industries. Finally, having developed a cadre of highly qualified scientists, technicians, and engineers, the Japanese became world leaders in high technology industry. This same developmental path was successfully replicated by the Asian Tigers (South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong), and is being followed now by the ASEAN countries.
The Twentieth Century World, now in its fourth edition, is suitable for lower-division undergraduate courses and will also be of interest to the general reader. It includes many useful and attractive maps but no footnotes. The book also includes a 23-page critical bibliography, two glossaries, and a detailed, reliable index. Since I finished the book a couple months ago, it has served me as a reference several times.
Probably What You're Looking For.......2003-03-26
The Twentieth-Century World: An International History, by Dr. William R. Keylor, has been recognized as one of the foremost sources for a historical account of the twentieth century by several professors, students, and other applicable parties alike, and for good reason. There are several factors to take into account when determining the merit of such a text, including the tenability of the text, the efficiency of its organization, the cogency of its material, and its physical practicalities in terms of design and dimension, not to mention the price. This text is an assessment, in narrative form of twentieth-century world history which provides comprehensive coverage of affairs related to the United States, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, all of which is up to date as recently as the year two thousand. Dr. Keylor presents the political, diplomatic and military history of the twentieth century while putting an appropriate significance on the effects of economics as well as on the bearing that geopolitics has over a country, both of which are often overlooked. In doing so, this text sheds light on important yet presumably subtle factors that have played important roles in the development of twentieth-century international history. While this account of international relations in the twentieth century is not only concise and depicted with convincing sensibility, Dr. Keylor manages to accomplish this with coherency and clarity, which substantiates a prepossessing flow from page to page. Perhaps one of the most appealing factors of this text is the language, which is straightforward and understandable without diminishing the quality of the material or compromising its effectiveness. In fact, this method likely affords Dr. Keylor to reach a wider audience that ranges from the individual with only an intermediate comprehension, to the educated and experienced history buff. Furthermore, another important element of this text is its ability to cover the history of the twentieth century concisely and clearly, in an intense analytical framework without boring the reader. This fact is among many of the others which separate it from many of its rivals.
Informative.......2003-01-16
A great book for understanding what really shapes foreign policy and for also explaining todays foreign conflicts. Keylour covers everything from WW1 to the present reaching from the US, & Europe to Asia and the Middle East. If you want to know more than what CNN will tell you, check this book out.
"The Book of the Century".......1998-10-04
Dr. Keylor portrays the political, diplomatic and military history of the twentieth century in the most understandable and straightforward language. He shows how history is responsible for what is currently happening around us, and why we should know the causes of the conflicts he writes about. He pays special attention to World War One, the rise of facism, World War Two, the rise of the Cold War, Latin America and the US, Africa, the Cold War in Asia, Israel and the Middle East, the triumph of and expansion of capitalism throughout Latin America and East Asia, the end of the Cold War, arms control and many other topics. The book is a very valuable reference for any student of law, international relations, politics or anyone else who wants to know more about the world that we live in.
Insightful, Didactic and Enjoyable.......1998-05-16
This concrete account of international relations in the twentieth century stands out in its clarity and coherence. And unlike many history books, it's not BORING, perhaps because it offers more than merely a narrative account; it is also set within an analytical framework. My attention was thoroughly held as Professor Keylor imparted his insight into the struggle among the major nations in the world for power, prosperity and prestige. Everything seemed to click into place, and the chapters just flow into one another. As Paul Kennedy said of it: " ...The style is pleasing and extremely lucid, and the emphasis on economic and geopolitical trends is greatly to be welcomed... An excellent synthetic work, and one which can be recommended to students and to interested laymen alike."

Book Description
This book presents the definitive account of the applications of this algebra to the surgery classification of topological manifolds. The central result is the identification of a manifold structure in the homotopy type of a Poincaré duality space with a local quadratic structure in the chain homotopy type of the universal cover. The difference between the homotopy types of manifolds and Poincaré duality spaces is identified with the fibre of the algebraic L-theory assembly map, which passes from local to global quadratic duality structures on chain complexes. The algebraic L-theory assembly map is used to give a purely algebraic formulation of the Novikov conjectures on the homotopy invariance of the higher signatures; any other formulation necessarily factors through this one.

An excellent overview of generalized surgery theory.......2002-12-01
For those readers who have completed advanced studies in algebraic topology and K-theory, and are ready to move on to a few of the even more esoteric topics in algebra and topology, this book would be an excellent choice. It is of course written for those who intend to specialize in the the areas included, but the book has value for those who are merely curious about the subject matter.
The author introduces his book by describing it as a self-contained overview of the algebraic L-theory of quadratic forms in dimensions greater than or equal to 5. This theory was initiated over two decades ago by the mathematicians Browder, Novikov, Sullivan, and Wall for the case of compact, differentiable, and piecewise-linear manifolds, and was constructed to study the relationship between their topology and their homotopy type. This theory was then extended to the case of topological manifolds by the mathematicians Kirby and Siebenmann. The author does not assume the reader has any prior exposure to surgery theory. Readers though who have knowledge of the extreme difference in level of difficulty between doing topology in dimensions 3 and 4 versus in dimension 5 should find this book easier going, i.e. the "Whitney trick" holds in 5 dimensions (or above).
The main core of the results in this book has its origins in the concept of Poincare duality, which is the equality between a spaces' n-dimensional homology and its (n-k)-cohomology. An n-dimensional Poincare space is a topological space where this equality holds for any coefficient group. Finite Poincare spaces, i.e. those which have the homotopy type of a finite CW complex, are not necessarily equivalent to a compact manifold. This motivates the "manifold structure existence" problem, which attempts to find out if a finite Poincare space (a space having the same homotopy type of a finite CW-complex) is homotopy equivalent to a compact manifold. But this homotopy equivalence may not be homotopic to a homeomorphism, and this fact motivates the "manifold structure uniqueness" problem, which is an attempt to find out if such a homotopy exists. A compact n-dimensional manifold is a finite n-dimensional Poincare space but a finite Poincare space is not necessarily homotopy equivalent to a compact manifold. The surgery theory of Browder, Novikov, Sullivan, Wall formulated obstructions for deciding the manifold structure existence and uniqueness theorems for dimensions greater than or equal to 5. These obstructions involve the topological K-theory of vector bundles, along with the algebraic L-theory of quadratic forms.
In the book the author extends his earlier work on algebraic surgery and develops an intrinsic characterization of the manifold structures. Thus the structure groups are defined using algebraic Poincare complexes, these being obstructions to the existence and uniqueness problems. The total surgery obstruction is a homotopy invariant that vanishes if and only if the space is homotopy equivalent to a compact manifold (of dimension greater than or equal to 5). These kinds of ideas are then abstracted to yield the concept of an assembly map, which is a map that acts on a topological invariant and gives a homotopy invariant. The algebraic L-theory assembly map essentially measures how far a homotopy equivalence is from being homotopic to a homeomorphism, or, put another way, how far from being rigid a space is (a rigid manifold is one in which every homotopy equivalence is homotopic to a homeomorphism). The author discusses his notion of an assembly map as a generalization of other assembly maps in algebraic topology, and he gives examples: the Leray homology spectral sequence, and the Zeeman dihomology spectral sequences. The idea of assembly in these contexts is to piece together the homology of a space from its cohomology with coefficients in the local homology. For example, for the case of homology manifolds, where the local homology groups at a point are the local homology groups of Euclidean space, the local Poincare duality isomorphisms are "assembled" to the global duality isomorphisms. Another way of saying this is that the local homology at each point, which is a topologically invariant property is "assembled" into the homotopy invariant property of Poincare duality. The author calls the relationship between topological manifolds, Poincare spaces, local algebraic Poincare complexes, and global algebraic Poincare complexes a "fiber square" in the book.
In analogy with hermitian K-theory, the quadratic L-groups were defined by the author in a previous work as cobordism of quadratic Poincare complexes over a ring with involution R. One then constructs an algebraic L-theory assembly map involving the generalized homology groups whose coefficients are taken from the quadratic L-theory spectrum of the integers. The structure groups are then taken to be the relative homotopy groups of the assembly map and they measure the extent to which the assembly maps fail to be an isomorphism.
Thinking topologically, the computation of the structure set involves the use of the Spivak normal fibration. The structure set is nonempty only if there exists a stable vector bundle whose associated sphere bundle is isomorphic to the Spivak normal fibration. A finite Poincare space is homotopy equivalent to a compact iff the Spivak normal fibration admits a topological bundle reduction such that a normal map from a manifold to the Poincare space has zero surgery obstruction. Since the author's goal is both an algebraic and a topological setting, he defines an algebraic analog to the Spivak normal fibration. This analog involves first what the author calls an "algebraic bordism category", which is an additive category with chain duality A, and a pair of subcategories of the chain homotopy category of A. The author spends the first part of the book giving the details of how to construct the quadratic L-groups of this category, and then how to get the assembly functor. This algebraic theory is then related to the geometric/topological context in the second half of the book.
Book Description
In the Nazi-occupied Warsaw of 1943, Irma Seidenman, a young Jewish widow, possesses two attributes that can spell the difference between life and death: she has blue eyes and blond hair. With these, and a set of false papers, she has slipped out of the ghetto, passing as the wife of a Polish officer, until one day an informer spots her on the street and drags her off to the Gestapo. At times a dark lament, at others a sly and sardonic thriller, The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman is the story of the thirty-six hours that follow Irma's arrest and the events that lead to her dramatic rescue as the last of Warsaw's Jews are about to meet their deaths in the burning ghetto.

Great literature.......2003-10-21
I just finished reading this book aloud to my wife. "Beautifully written" would be too little praise for this piece of fine literature. I found it reminiscent of Tolstoy at his best, but it stands on it's own. Andrzej Szczypiorski tells the story, not of Mrs. Seidenman, but of humanity. The only thing that I can compare this book to is the film "Decalogue" by his fellow Pole Krystof Kieslowski. It is full of, how shall I put it?, perhaps "tenderness" for the plight, and the beauty, of people with all of their humanity. Like Tolstoy, he does it without sentimentality and allows us to see beyond the surface of each character. And, also like Tolstoy, he does so with words, sentences, paragraphs, that seem to flow effortlessly.
Do not be decieved that this is merely a novel "about" the holocaust, or Poland, or Catholicism. It is about people. From the sympathetic whore who gives shelter to a desperate Jewish boy to the Nazi who orders the deaths of Jews. We discover that neither the whore nor the Nazi could have done anything other than what they did.
A wonderful writer. A wonderful book. Not just a good read but a great experience.
A story of survival.......2003-08-11
This one is along the lines of The Pianist. It's well written, and provides another view into a time that I still can't fathom.
A Not So Simple Tale.......2003-03-10
The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman is one of the most beautifully written novels I have ever read. The author deftly weaves together several people's lives which converge during the same time period. There are no distilled characterizations of heroes or demons; rather, fairly ordinary and yet complex people who are trying to figure out how to live and survive in Nazi occupied Warsaw. To further exemplify how ordinary the characters are, Szczypiorski projects each person into their future to let the reader know what will become of him or her. This can be an artifical plot device but in this case, it is highely effecting. Moreover, it does not take the reader so much out of the present, rather it helps one to better undertand the complexity of each character--no matter how "simple" he or she may seem. This is a very full reading experience. It is thought provoking, affect laden and a really well told story. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Holocaust and/or Poland.
Mr Szczypiorski Made Me Cry.......2001-03-19
Figaro Magazine was right: "superb and staggering." Mrs Seidenman is at the epicenter of a collapsing world. She is beautiful and cultured, yet otherwise unremarkable. A disconnected cast of mostly ordinary, yet often remarkable, men women and children swirl about her on the brink of extinction. Seemingly underwritten, this telling of a horror for the ages almost sneaks up on you and gathers momentum until the very last page. It left me dazed and a little wiser.
Beautiful, poignant book.......1999-06-07
I bought two copies of this book years ago so I could share it with a good friend and have someone to talk to about this wonderful, disturbing story. Sad to say, she's yet to read it. I've read it three times over the years and am moved and haunted still by the realism of the characters and their struggles for dignity and life. One day, I'll meet someone else who has read this book, and over a long cafe break, we'll discuss the imagery, the painful courage of the protagonists, and the latter day realities the Holocaust has left behind . . . . .
