A must-read!
Thanks to Chinsamy-Turan I now fully appreciate the usefulness of bone microstructure in reconstructing the biology of dinosaurs. Chinsamy-Turan has a knack of explaining complex ideas in a simple easy-to-follow manner - you really do not have to be a fully- fledged vertebrate paleontologist to read (and understand) this book. I found the chapters on dinosaur growth, biology of early birds, and dinosaur physiology absolutely fascinating.

Dinosaur Bone is a fantastic read. Written in a gripping style by the world's expert on bone microstructure, this book explains one of the most recently developed and most useful techniques for the study of dinosaurs and other extinct animals. Dr. Chinsamy-Turan brings freshness to the subject that engages the reader from the first page to the last. Anyone who likes dinosaurs will find this book a fascinating look at a field that is revolutionizing our understanding of these magnificent creatures. Chapters on how bones are formed and structured, how dinosaurs grew and on the biology of early birds are presented in an accessible and easy to read fashion. It is amazing how the author takes a complicated subject and makes it understandable to readers from high school students to professors. She saves the best for last with a chapter on dinosaur physiology in which she discusses whether dinosaurs were hot-blooded or cold-blooded and how dinosaur bone helps answer that question. This book is a must read for anyone interested in dinosaur biology. This book presents the main mathematical prerequisites for analysis in metric spaces. It covers abstract measure theory, Hausdorff measures, Lipschitz functions, covering theorums, lower semicontinuity of the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure, Sobolev spaces of maps between metric spaces, and
Gromov-Hausdorff theory, all developed ina general metric setting. The existence of geodesics (and more generally of minimal Steiner connections) is discussed on general metric spaces and as an application of the Gromov-Hausdorff theory, even in some cases when the ambient space is not locally
compact. A brief and very general description of the theory of integration with respect to non-decreasing set functions is presented following the Di Giorgi method of using the 'cavalieri' formula as the definition of the integral. Based on lecture notes from Scuola Normale, this book presents the
main mathematical prerequisites for analysis in metric spaces. Supplemented with exercises of varying difficulty it is ideal for a graduate-level short course for applied mathematicians and engineers.

These notes originated from a course given by the first author in 1998/99 in the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. The aim of the course was the presentation of the main mathematical prerequisites needed for the so-called Analysis in Metric Spaces. The exposition, though not fully self contained, covers abstract measure theory, Hausdorff measures, Lipschitz functions, covering theorems, Sobolev spaces; all these topics are developed in a general metric setting. We also discuss in detail the geodesic problem and the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. The last chapter contains a brief, but very general, description of the theory of integration with respect to nondecreasing set functions.

This concise and informative biography deals with Aurelian, Emperor of Rome from 270-275; a man who in many ways revitalized the military and politic fiber of Rome, but whose comparatively brief reign has left him largely forgotten. (Indeed until this biography the usual means of reading about Aurelian - other than through Gibbon - was to go to biographies on Queen Zenobia, the Palmyrian rebel who he famously defeated). In every sense, Aurelian's brief but successful reign presaged Diocletian's lengthy and successful one.

The first half of the book is a narrative of his many achievements (peace in Britain, the Eastern frontier restored, an imperial pretender in Gaul defeated, the Aurelian walls constructed); the second is more of an essay-format discussion of the economic and other social aspects of his reign. My only gripe is that the second half is considerably more academic than the first, and as such does not read as well. Having said that, this is an excellent work. Particularly interesting is Watson's observations about the supposed 3rd century "decline"; as he observes, this is an after-the-fact construct, and Romans of that era did not necessarily view themselves as being in the middle of some giant historic slide.

Excellent read on the era of the Empire and Aurelian!.......1999-11-19

This is an excellent book! I was recently in London and discovered this book in a Picadilly area bookstore. I read it when I could, finally finishing it on my flight home. The author dives into the time period and does an excellent breaking down and putting events back into order, backing everything with evidence. Aurelian the Emperor has always been a fascination of mine since childhood (along with Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Julian the Apostate, even Valentinian III; along with every detail of the Roman Empire!), and I am now 48. And to-date this is the best book of literature/ biography of what is known about that fascinating emperor, Aurelian. And one of the best about explaining the backdrop of "Political" Roma during the mid -3rd century. A must read!
