"If we can pull it off," said the climber, referring to a route up Mt. Everest's West Ridge, "it would be the biggest possible thing still to be accomplished in Himalayan mountaineering." To undertake such a route is to understand that failure is not an option; there is no turning back from the West Ridge. In 1963 Thomas Hornbein, the author of Everest: The West Ridge, and his partner Willi Unsoeld committed themselves to such a glory-or-death assault on the world's tallest peak. Their achievement is told within the pages of this book, one of the classic mountaineering sagas of all time.
Book Description
In one of mountaineering's greatest adventure stories, Tom Hornbein tells of his and Willi Unsoeld's dramatic first ascent of Everest's West Ridge-a route that had been dismissed as hopeless by all previous expeditions. Part of the first successful American expedition, Hornbein and Unsoeld ascended beyond "the point of no return" to make the summit, and were then forced to bivouac at 28,000 feet without food, shelter, or oxygen in what is one of mountaineering's most compelling survival stories.
Customer Reviews:
A Truly Inspirational Book.......2003-01-29
I first read this book in the summer of 1969, and it is anything but dry or boring. Hornbein's matter-of-fact narrative does nothing to diminish the drama and the risk inhering in any attempt on Everest, but especially one in which the climbers descend by a route which is completely new to them. Hornbein also worked very hard to select incredibly beautiful photographs and inspirational quotations from some of the most famous mountaineers of all time. These, combined with the narrative of his own personal odyssey on the West Ridge, make this book into a truly inspirational piece of literature. Those who require sensationalism and hyperbole will not like this book, but those who recognize the drama inhering in any "point of no return" decision to continue going on up will see that no hyperbole is required. The narrative of events is compelling, especially if one has ventured into the high mountains and feels their majesty with both awe and respect--and sometimes terror. For some reason this book changed my life, and those who respond to challenges with the desire to do something worthwhile with their own lives will see in mountaineering a metaphor for every great and risky enterprise.
A CLASSIC MOUNTAINEERING BOOK.......2001-10-11
This book tells the history of the 1.st ascent via West Ridge of Mount Everest by Thomas Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld, both members of the 1963 american expedition lidered by Norman Dyhrenfurth that also putted the first american(Jim Whittaker) on top of Mount Everest.
They set out to climb Everest by the traditional route via South Col, but somewhere along the journey to base camp a group of climbers decided that a new route would be the biggest thing still to be accomplished in Himalayan mountaineering, among them were Hornbein and Unsoeld.
Hornbein became a fanatic about summiting Everest via The West Ridge through a couloir and with the support of Unsoeld, Barry Corbert,Al Auten, Dick Emerson and some good sherpas, he did it.Corbert and Auten pioneered a route to Camp 5W, followed by some sherpas and by Hornbein, Unsoeld and Emerson. From camp 5W Hornbein and Unsoeld attacked the summit, summiting it at 6:15 p.m. on may 22 1963, them they traversed the mountain and descented via the south col route at night. On the descent they actually found two other climbers(Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad - that summited that same day)and spent the night out with them at 8000 mt. The rest is mountaineering history.
This classic book is a must have in any mountaineering collection and a must read to anyone who is interested in this subject.
Note: The only fatality during the expedition was Jake Breitenbach who died in the khumbu icefalls while leading a reconnaissance team. The couloir that Unsoeld and Horbein used to reach the summit is still known as the Hornbein Couloir.
best literary exposition of the drama of climbing.......2001-05-14
"Everest : The West Ridge" by Thomas F. Hornbein is an extremely well written book. A lot of climbers in their books are trying to explain why they climb - Hornbein gives one of the most honest, eloquent and convincing account; almost as good's as Mallory, who just said "because it is there".
The book takes an honest, and sometime humorous account of foundational days of American Everest mountaineering; in sometimes naive ways the climbers are trying to vote themselves off the mountain; filling up psychological surveys in high camps, using a little robot to haul up food. In a matter-of-fact way Hornbein describes how they climbed beyond the point of safe return on the West Ridge, have to descend down the unknown to them side of the mountain, bivouac at 8500 meters .. and help their fellow climbers down the South Col route.
Now, 40 years after the climb, the book and the events are as true to the times and the spirit of climbing as ever. And besides, to the best of my knowledge, Hornbein and Unsoeld's is still the only traverse in Everest history.
Everest The West Ridge.......2001-04-01
A detailed account of a great mountaineering feat. The tensions between the team is fascinating. Because the sheets the mountaineers were required to fill in about what they were feeling by the team psycologist were left behind before the final push the most interesting part of the account is related in the thinest detail. A shame cos it knocks the gloss off what would otherwise be truly a 5 star book.
A DRAMATIC , EVEREST ADVENTURE DRYLY TOLD...ZZZZZZZ.......2000-11-07
This is the story of the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition which made mountaineering history. It saw the first Americans summit Everest via the South Col. It also saw the first climb of Everest by anyone via the West Ridge route, previously believed to be unclimbable.
Not only did Thomas Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld summit Everest via the West Ridge, they traversed the mountain and descended via the South Col route. They were, however, forced to bivouac in the death zone at 28,000 feet without any food, supplemental oxygen, or shelter.
One would think that such a dramatic turn of events high on Everest would be riveting to read. Wrong! Unfortunately, this is the one problem with this book. The story is told in a very dry, dull fashion. It is as if Hornbein were talking about flossing one's teeth rather than about a segment of mountaineering history of which he was an integral part.
Nevertheless, this is a high quality paperback with forty-eight terrific photographs that are sure to delight Everest junkies everywhere. No mountaineering library should be without this book, which recounts with detail one of the most significant climbs in the history of the Himalayas.

Book Description
For more than 2,100 years the ancient Chinese built chang cheng, or long walls, in the north of their empire to defend it from nomadic invasion. Recording in earth, stone and bricks the protracted and violent conflict between the nomadic tribes of the north and the sedentary farming peoples of the south, these structuresGreat Walls of Chinago far beyond history. So labor intensive, and so time and material consuming were these projects that, even after the passage of centuries, long sections of the Great Wall remain as major landscape features, thus defining a special geography of north China. William Lindesay was lured to China in 1986 to explore the Ming-dynasty Great Wall, which evolved between 1368 and 1644 in direct response to the threat of a re-invasion by the Mongols. Travelling on foot in 1987 between its most westerly and easterly points, Lindesay discovered "that the Great Walls are not objects, but subjects." Guided in his belief that "field work is the key to understanding" he has remained in China for 15 years to systematically explore the Great Wall's geography, history, architecture, archaeology, military function, construction logistics, purpose and performance. All of which are covered in this book, revealing many new aspects of this fascinating subject.
Written by the most renowned foreign explorer of the Great Wall New enlarged edition, more than twice the original size with much additional information provided to enhance readers' knowledge of the subject Clear maps to illustrate the geography of the complex structure Line drawings to illustrate main architectural elements Archive and present-day photos reveal the changes to the Wall in the last century Facts for the visitor including where and when to visit, where to stay, how to book Sidebars on subjects including early foreign impressions of the Great Wall, weapons and conservation issues 56 superb colour photographsthe result of more than 500 days of exploration 3 maps

the extremes tell it all.......2007-10-17
Notice the extremes of the reviews. On one side, "KelleyG" gives it 5 stars and complains about "obvious religious zealots who feel they have a right to shove their beliefs down the throats of everyone else in this country", and 4 Christians give the book 1 star for its anti-Christian themes and statements. They're both right. The book does nice activities, but its strong point is the background info provided for each activity. I value how it asks us to think about living life in the Middle Ages, like how heavy armour would feel, living without modern technology, and how short life spans lowered the marriage age. I can do an activity AND present questions that help my child relate to the Middle Ages. But, the anti-Christian perspective is flawed to the point of giving an inaccurate perception of the Middle Ages. Pointing out the failures of the church is valuable and needed. Ignoring the contributions of the church is historically inaccurate. For example, nearly every expert credits the church as being the only source of learning and scholarship during the Middle Ages. The handwritten manuscripts of the monks preserved great texts, both Christian and secular, that would have been lost forever. This vital fact is one of many that the authors ignore. Notice that "manuscript" is nowhere in the index, but "minds, open vs. closed" is an index entry. I appreciate that the book is more than just page after page of activity in that it provides historical and philosophical points. I really like it, and will use it. But, as a Christian, in the end, as I am using it with my child, I'll also be able to use it as an example of how bias distorts historical accuracy. We'll be able to talk about whether the church-bashing passages are really true, why somebody would write thus, and what is a more accurate position to take. I am absolutely not afraid to point out the failings of the church. I just wish the authors had been willing to consider the valuable contributions, also. If the church defined much of the Middle Ages, then the distortion is inexcusable.
I own the book, I like it, but I'll call it what it is--biased historical perspective--and educate my kids accordingly when we read those passages.
Read the all reviews first!.......2007-05-05
I was really disappointed by this book. It's very anti-Christian, anti-European, anti-Middle Ages, even. Avery Hart is warping history to suit a politicly correct agenda. I hoped to at least get a few craft ideas, but those were unoriginal and not well done. The "make your own code of honor" craft for example didn't even give an example of what a medieval code of honor might have been like. The book, in my opinion at least, is a big waste.
Lots to do!.......2007-02-13
Make sure you're ready to take on craft projects when you get this book, you'll be inspired to build castles and family crests!
Anti-Christian Zealotry at its worst.......2006-07-04
Apparently Christianity is at the root of all evil and the cause of most misfortune that occurred in the middle ages. If it weren't for those darned Christians, it seems the world would be a much better place. St. Frances of Assis was ok, (he loved animals), but all the rest of the Christians were closed-minded, violent and supersititous. I wasn't aware that the church wouldn't let people read because it might confuse them and that many people became monks because they didn't want to go to war.
I wish I had read all the reviews before purchasing this item, and I have definitely learned my lesson. I would never allow my children to read this trash.
Excellent for Modern-Day Thought and Practice.......2005-11-21
Ignore the obvious religious zealots who feel they have a right to shove their beliefs down the throats of everyone else in this country and the world in general: there is absolutely nothing wrong with a child learning about the realities of the middle ages, which was an era heavily influenced by the Catholic church. An adult subject matter, albeit an opportunity for quality parenting, this era was dominated by the church and many superstitious and malinformed beliefs we hold true today stem from this era of intolerance and brutality against human kind and religious freedom.
This book is a wonderful and refreshing guide to learning about the middle ages, and offers a perspective on the era which allows children to ask questions and open their minds to the possibilities of the belief systems of other people and families. Children asking their parents questions based upon moral ground and religious belief is extremely healthy, and it offers up an opportunity for parents to parent their children the way they decide to parent their children. This is especially true if your family happens NOT to be Christian, as non-Christians in this era were treated rather harshly (i.e. the Crusades of Christians against Muslims and Jews).
The activities are creative and allow children to begin an inquisitive mindset geared toward futher want of learning about the middle ages. In general, this is a fine place to start and it opens a pathway for learning more about the era. There are other books available with better and more indepth activities, however this book offers a balanced introduction to the times. Combine this with whatever religious classes or teachings your family traditions, and further the lessons with trips to museums to view tactile and artistic representations of the people of the middle ages, along with writings from poets and authors of the times for an even-keeled and well-balanced cirriculum.

Wonderful.......2007-05-13
I used this product as a home school assignment for my daughter. She had a great time making it. It was a fun way for her to get a grade in history.
Excellent project!.......2006-09-23
I was given this as a gift and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You have to take your time with this and its going to take quite a few hours to make. It looks really good when complete. If you have never worked with paper or origami or any kind of similar craft this will be a challenge. Overall it was excellent.
One tip: I used a little too much glue when affixing everything to the base so it came out a little wrinkled. I suggest you only use thin glue or a very light amount of glue when affixing things to the base. It will look much better if the base is very flat. This minimal use of glue is probably a good rule of thumb for the whole model but everything came out fine for me, just the base was a little wrinkled.
"crammed with historical detail" (from the back of the book).......2006-07-30
This little project took two adults a long Friday night and all day Saturday to put together, but the finished product was a big hit with the giftee. My fingers are still numb from using the scissors, and I would have given up 15 times, but my partner soldiered on (or should I say knighted) so I had to follow suit. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known what I was getting into, but now I'm glad we did it.
Very hard for a beginner, but fabulous looking when done.......2006-07-17
I've never done any modeling, but I thought this would be an interesting project to do with my 7-year-old since we're studying the Middle Ages over the summer. I spent a week trying to put the thing together. It says to use quick drying glue, but gave no suggestions. Several of the glues I used just didn't stick to the slick surface. Finally, I gave up. I was visiting my Dad the next week and he does balsa model airplanes as a hobby. He told me that paper is one of the hardest modeling materials. We spent many hours over the next week putting it together. Not all the pieces fit correctly and had to be modified. (One of the towers was too big around, for instance.) We also mounted it on a piece of corrugated carboard, which helped with the stability of the whole thing. He taught me some of the tricks of the trade and we used 4 different types of glue, depending on the situation. When we were finished, it looked fabulous, but it was really difficult.
A Fortune of Fun for $10.......2003-06-10
This model has been an absolute kick to make. I am an overstressed financial executive and mother of an almost-four-year-old and this book has become my evening therapy. Although my daughter can't help with the building (it's fairly complicated and requires careful cutting), she loves watching me put it together while she plays with the tiny cut-out characters. She has spent hours making up versions of fairy tales while she watches me put the castle together. A great value for someone who likes making things and is looking for a pick-up project that doesn't require a workshop or special equipment.

Book Description
The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a large family of enzymes that break down different components of the extracellular matrix. Their catalytic activity is dependent on the metal ion zinc. This issue of the Protein Profiles covers the sequence information, three-dimensional structures, activation, protein substrates, specificity requirements, inhibition, and biological roles of all the currently identified MMPs. The action of these enzymes must be carefully regulated. One way the cell does this is by releasing inhibitory molecules known as tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). This volume contains information on the sequences, three-dimensional structures, and biological roles of the four known TIMPs. Matrix metalloproteinases and TIMPs will therefore be an invaluable source of data for all researchers interested in MMPs and TIMPS.

Product Description
This book presents the reader with an understanding of the role played by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the normal and diseased central nervous system (CNS). These enzymes may be important to brain development, and may also contribute to tissue destruction, which is observed with inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the brain. The book provides a background on the biology of MMPs, and on the stimuli and conditions that are linked to an increase in their production and activity. It describes the targets of MMPs, which include matrix proteins such as collagen, soluble cytokines and chemokines, and cell surface receptors. Studies implicating MMPs in neuronal process outgrowth and cell migration in CNS development are covered. The book also touches on studies suggesting that, in certain situations, dysregulated MMP activity and/or production may be critical to blood–brain barrier breakdown and neuronal damage.

Fun Political Theory from the Enlightenment.......2006-02-10
A little background
Bernard Mandeville was a practicing physician in Early Modern Europe who, towards his later years, spent much of his time composing political philosophy and satire. In fact, the two genres were almost always intertwined. When published, Mandeville's 'Fable of the Bees' created a large stir throughout English society and the work was largely criticized for the views it put forth. However, at the same time, it was this same critical popularity that turned this doctor into a best-selling author. Sweet irony, eh?
The work
I have to admit that at first sight, I thought this work to be a bit too silly and not very substantial. This edited version begins with Mandeville's 'Grumbling Hive', a poem that really cannot be considered one of the great pieces of 18th century satire. If that's what you want, I suggest that you check out Jonathan Swift's writings or Montesquieu's 'Persian Letters.'
Instead, it is his essays and 'dialogues' within the Fable of the Bees which are of greater importance and far more interesting to read. Much of the political work is devoted to grounding various human sentiments, virtues, and behaviors within human egoism and self-interest. That is, he wishes to illustrate how much of what we consider virtuous within human beings or civil societies is, on the contrary, based upon pride and self-interest. Particularly interesting is Mandeville's account of social development. He, like many early modern european theorists, has a tale of the state-of-nature and the rise of political society. In it, he argues that reason, the arts, sciences, language, and other skills are not natural human characteristics. Instead, they developed over time through man's interactions with the outside world and man's interaction with other men. Indeed, Mandeville's views seem to be very close to that of Adam Smith, on the one hand, and Rousseau, on the other. It's quite bizarre. That is, at least, my interpretation.
While Mandeville has primarily been read in English classes as a piece of satire, it is only recently that greater attention has been given to his political philosophy. Whereas a good amount of time is spent studying Hobbes, Locke, Adam Smith and Rousseau, among others, there is usually little time to get to Mandeville.
As such, I definately recommend this to anyone who wishes to learn more about the political philosophy of early modern europe and the enlightenment. However, I doubt it will be of interest to many others. If you wish to learn more about Mandeville, there are some great secondary texts. However, Hundert (the editor) provides a great introduction and overview himself in this abridged version of the Fable of the Bees.
