Book Description
Experimentation is a dominant approach in contemporary ecological research, pervading studies at all levels of biological organization and across diverse taxa and habitats. Experimental Ecology assembles an eminent group of ecologists who synthesize insights from these varied sources into a cogent statement about experimentalism as an analytical paradigm, placing experimentation within the larger framework of ecological investigation. The book discusses diverse experimental approaches ranging from laboratory microcosms to manipulation of entire ecosystem, illustrating the myriad ways experiments strengthen ecological inference. Experimental ecologists critique their science to move the field forward on all fronts: from better designs, to better links between experiments and theory, to more realism in experiments targeted at specific systems and questions.

Book Description
As our lives become more urbanized, many of us have lost the ability to name these beautiful flowers, whether in cities or countryside, in gardens or conservation areas. This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

overviews and details of historic ships of Columbus discovery.......2005-11-01
Along with the scale fold-out plan on the inside of the jacket with folds at the top and bottom, photographs, models, and diagrams recreate the three historic, legendary ships of Columbus's first voyage to the New World. The work by the noted Spanish maritime historian is the latest in the publisher's series "Anatomy of the Ship." Other historically notable and in a few cases historically momentous ships dealt with in this series in a similar manner are the HMS Beagle and the Endeavor (Cook's ship), the naval cutter Alert, and the more generic Fairmile 'D' Motor Torpedo Boat. An inviting series for naval and maritime enthusiast. Diagrams with a detail familiar from airplane designs, and more relevantly, the skillfully-drawn, aesthetically-pleasing designs of yachts do not stop at the body of the three ships, but extend to individual designs of masts, ship fittings, flags, steering gear, tackle, the smaller landing boats, and other parts of the ships. With this bounty of detailed diagrams and illustrations of the ship parts (e. g., masts and sails), equipment, and other implements the crews would work with and handle, the Columbus voyage comes to life in a unique way.
one book is never enough for three ships.......2000-05-28
The book covers lots of details about all three ships, but misses lots of other details, most probably because there is not enough evidence for such old vessels. Modelers with extreme ambition to build the interior of these ships may be disappointed, but in general the book is a very informative one about the general outlook of the ships. As in all such books, we have to question certain items about the restitution of the ships.

Book Description
A major challenge in applied mathematics and mechanics of materials is to describe various types of material microstructures. The details of the microstructure of most natural and engineered materials are usually obscure; uncertainty and randomness are the inherent features. This complexity due to material heterogeneity has not been adequately described by current classical models and theories.
Stochastic Modeling of Microstructures presents a concise and unified presentation of the basic principles and tools for the modeling of real materials, natural and man-made, that possess complex, random heterogeneity. The book uses the language and methods of random field theory combined with the basic constructs of stochastic geometry and geometrical/spatial statistics in order to give the reader the knowledge necessary to model various types of material microstructures. In addition, the book provides a link between the theoretical constructs and physical microstructures via statistical inference from empirical data and the analysis of selected applied problems.
Topics and Features:
* The first comprehensive introduction to the new field of stochastic modeling of material microstructures
* Basic tools required from the diverse subjects of random field theory, stochastic geometry, and spatial statistics are provided
* Background concepts from probability theory and stochastic processes are provided
* Applications from various fields are discussed, including stochastic wave propagation and the mechanics of porous media flow
* The clear and integrated exposition guides the reader from the basics through problems of contemporary research interest
* A familiarity with basic probability theory and the most common techniques of applied mathemathics is the only assumed prerequisite. All other concepts required for the stochastic modeling of material microstructures are provided.
This book is ideal for a general scientific and engineering audience needing an in-depth guide to current ideas, methods, and models for the stochastic modeling of microstructures. It is an essential reference for practitioners, researchers, and professionals in material modeling, mechanical engineering, materials science, chemical, civil, environmental engineering and applied mathematics.
Book Description
Atlantis was first introduced by the Greek philosopher Plato in two "dialogues" he wrote in the fourth century B.C. His tale of a great empire that sank beneath the waves has sparked thousands of years of debate over whether Atlantis really existed. But did Plato mean his tale as history, or just as a parable to help illustrate his philosophy? In The Atlantis Dialogue, you'll find everything Plato said about Atlantis, in the context he intended. Now you can read and judge for yourself!

Everything Plato said about the lost continent of Atlantis.
Customer Reviews:
From a Theatrical point of view.......2007-03-10
I enjoyed the dialogues immensely, however, one who is looking for a more in depth look into Plato's philosopies on this "Utopic Society, Atlantis", this is not the book. From a theatrical perspective it is great fun and the imagination takes over.
The Atlantis Dialogue: A Handy Primer.......2006-08-12
The first best thing to do when seriously curious about a legend like Atlantis is to become familiar with the source materials from which it sprang, in order to expose later embellishments. Enhancements added over time commonly render otherwise believable original accounts into fanciful yarns, believable only as myths. (Sorting out the embellishments from legitimate research findings is another task.) This book presents that source account; the whole and nothing but. It is much like an archaeological find; a genuine relic dug up. A bit pricey for its size; its main sellig point is convenience: Quick, easy, portable reference, without the bulk of the full dialogues; and its slim enough to fit into a notebook. The editor seems to hint of bias in the introduction; but, the text itself is plain and free of italics, paraphrasing, and other editors' devices, and is not a new translation. To me, this oldest version reads like a new one. I found no mention of lasers, energy vortices, or power crystals. I did find an eerily familiar description of a civilization whose construction and archetectural achievements and innovations were no more astounding, and certainly no less, than those of the Egyptians, Chinese, Romans, Maya, or Inca, most of which remain equally mystifying. I was far more intrigued by the plausibility of this story than by the modern myth it has become. Atlantis must remain a myth until someone finds it. On the other hand; the city Ilios of Troy was also another myth invented by another ancient author for another work of fiction, until it was discovered in 1871 by Heinrich Schliemann, using Homer's Iliad as his guide. If Atlantis can be found, the lead clues are in this work.
Where did the story originate and is any of it true? .......2006-06-10
The legendary tale of the lost continent of Atlantis starts in 355 B.C. with the Greek philosopher Plato. Everyone knows this, but what everyone doesn't know is that Plato had planned to write a trilogy of books discussing the nature of man, the creation of the world, and the story of Atlantis, as well as other subjects. As we all know. only the first book was ever completed. The second book was abandoned part way through, and the final book was never even started. Plato used dialogues to express his ideas. This type of writing style is when the author's thoughts are explored in a series of arguments and debates between various characters in the story. Plato often used real people in his dialogues, such as his teacher, Socrates, but the words he gave them were his own. In Plato's book, Timaeus, a character named Kritias tells an account of Atlantis that has been in his family for generations. According to the character, the story was originally told to his ancestor, Solon, by a priest during Solon's visit to Egypt.
There had been a powerful empire located to the west of the Pillars of Hercules (the Straight of Gibraltar) on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The nation there had been established by Poseidon, the God of the Sea. Poseidon fathered five sets of twins on the island. The firstborn, Atlas, had the continent and the surrounding ocean named for him. Poseidon divided the land into ten sections, each to be ruled by a son, or his heirs. The capital city of Atlantis was a marvel of architecture and engineering. The city was composed of a series of concentric walls and canals. At the very center was a hill, and on top of the hill a temple to Poseidon. Inside was a gold statue of the God of the Sea showing him driving six winged horses.
About 9000 years before the time of Plato, after the people of Atlantis became corrupt and greedy, the gods decided to destroy them. A violent earthquake shook the land, giant waves rolled over the shores, and the island sank into the sea, never to be seen again. So, is the story of Atlantis just a fable used by Plato to make a point? Or is there some reason to think he was referring to a real place? Well, at numerous points in the dialogues, Plato's characters refer to the story of Atlantis as genuine history and it being within the realm of fact. Plato also seems to put into the story a lot of detail about Atlantis that would be unnecessary if he had intended to use it only as a literary device.
On the other hand according to the writings of the historian Strabo, Plato's student Aristotle remarked that Atlantis was simply created by Plato to illustrate a point. Unfortunately, Aristotle's writings on this subject, which might have cleared the mystery up, have been lost eons ago. This is a great, albeit short story, introduction into the legandary lost city of Atlantis. Plato was a brilliant mind with a nitch for story telling.
intro full of bias.......2006-03-27
I was pleased to be able to own in book form this literature by Plato, even if it is available online for free. There is something about having a book in my hand that I truly enjoy. Anyway, I wish this book was JUST Plato's work on Atlantis, not including such a bias intro, calling Plato's story of Atlantis "pure fiction" discounting it as a real possibility of place and history.
A Disappointment.......2006-02-23
While the content of the book was quite interesting, all the author did was combine Plato's dialogues of Timaeus and Critias which are free in various formats on the Internet. I already had them and was expecting more than a mere title change. The author's opinion of Plato's work can be viewed on the back cover where he quotes Socrates in bold italics "... what a lot of lies this young man is telling about me!" As far as I see it, he is merely using the popularity of the name Atlantis to fund a self-publishing enterprise. P.S. Kudos to Plato.
Book Description
The finest tale ever written of fabled Atlantis, The Lost Continent is a sweeping, fiery saga of the last days of the doomed land. Atlantis, at the height of its power and glory, is without equal. It has established far-flung colonies in Egypt and Central America, and its mighty navies patrol the seas. The priests of Atlantis channel the elemental powers of the universe, and a powerful monarch rules from a staggeringly beautiful city of pyramids and shining temples clustered around a sacred mountain.
Mighty Atlantis is also decaying and corrupt. Its people are growing soft and decadent, and many live in squalor. Rebellion is in the air, and prophecies of doom ring forth. Into this epic drama of the end of time stride two memorable characters: the warrior-priest Deucalion, stern, just, and loyal, and the Empress Phorenice, brilliant, ambitious, and passionate. The old and new Atlantis collide in a titanic showdown between Deucalion and Phorenice, a struggle that soon affects the destiny of an entire civilization.
Customer Reviews:
The best Atlantis yarn.......2007-06-08
Not that I claim to be an expert on stories about Atlantis, but C. J. Cutcliffe Hyne's THE LOST CONTINENT is certainly the most entertaining example I have ever read of this rankly overgrown subliterary subgenre. Phorenice, one of the most charismatic villainesses to be found anywhere in fantasy literature, is alone worth the price of admission. Highly recommended.
A Vanished Civilization.......2004-11-07
Whether or not you believe Atlantis existed there is something compelling about the idea of a far-away time, when the world had eight continents. I've been interested in Atlantis since childhood but I prefer to think of it as a myth. Many archaeologists hate Atlantis, refusing to believe in the teasing possibility of a vanished civilization swallowed by the sea. But it's been a source of inspiration for many SF and fantasy writers, ranging from Jules Verne to Robert E. Howard. C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne's novel "The Lost Continent" (1900) begins with the discovery of an ancient manuscript in a cave in the Canary Islands. In describing the events leading to the destruction of Atlantis, the narrator Deucalion tells an action-packed story of adventure, romance and revenge.
After giving up his post as viceroy for the colony of Yucatan, Deucalion, a warrior-priest fiercely loyal to the gods, and completely devoted to duty, returns to Atlantis for the first time in twenty years, finding it very different to the spiritual, prosperous land he remembers.
Atlantis is now governed by the Empress Phorenice, a beautiful but ruthless tyrant hell-bent on crushing opposition. Despite Phorenice's physical beauty, her evil mind and lack of conscience enables her to inflict acts of cruelty on her subjects without a qualm. Like most power-hungry autocrats, Phorenice views the suffering of others with casual disdain or amusement. In her endeavours to strengthen her power as a self-proclaimed deity, she treats the gods with an equal level of scorn and contempt, as she discovers more and more of their secrets.
Phorenice now wants Deucalion to be her husband. As Deucalion is a fatalist, believing his life to be in the hands of the gods, he agrees to her wishes and sees the full extent of Atlantis' fall from grace. Cruelty and brutality are commonplace in Atlantis, among the splendour of its spires and temples, and anyone who incurs the displeasure of the Empress is punished with torture and death. Under these conditions, it is not surprising that rebellion is growing.
We already know the ultimate fate of Atlantis but this doesn't stop the reader from enjoying the story. C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne was a writer with a sense of humour and this sometimes comes through in the dialogue. Deucalion fits the mould of the ideal fantasy hero: strong, daring, brave and articulate, a possible precursor to Conan, but a bit more intelligent. And celibate. Phorenice is the archetypal femme fatale.
Sadly "The Lost Continent" is the only book C.J. Cutcliffe Heine is remembered for today. Despite a productive career much of his work is now forgotten. But anyone fascinated by Atlantis will want to read this. "The Lost Continent" is reputed to be the best interpretation of the legendary civilization.
A WONDERFUL FANTASY.......2003-08-04
"The Lost Continent" first appeared serially in the English publication "Pearson's Magazine" in 1899, and in book form the following year. The author, C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne, is not exactly a household name today, but, back when, was an extremely popular and prolific writer. His serialized tales of Captain Kettle, also in "Pearson's," were supposedly only second in popularity to the "Strand Magazine"'s Sherlock Holmes stories, as submitted by Conan Doyle. But today, Hyne's reputation seems to rest solely on this wonderful novel of the last years of the continent of Atlantis.
The history of these final years is told by the soldier-priest Deucalion, who, at the book's opening, has just been recalled from his 20-year viceroyalty of the Atlantean province of Yucatan. On his return to his homeland, after that two-decade absence, he finds that much has changed. The upstart Phorenice has seized power and declared herself Empress; the capital city boasts many new pyramids but also many new slums; the people are starving and in revolt; the priest clan is challenging the Empress to amend her ways or face the wrath of the High Gods. Yes, it is quite a mess that Deucalion returns home to, and things only get worse when Phorenice takes a hot-blooded fancy to him and decides to take him to husband. Before all is said and done in this fast-moving tale, the reader has been treated to a four-way love triangle (or is that square?), a runaway mammoth, fights with sea monsters and giant cave tigers, pyramid intrigue, a gigantic battle between Phorenice's army and the High Priests (a battle perhaps inspired by those in H. Rider Haggard's lost-world novels), the use of arcane magic and, of course, the final destruction of the continent of Atlantis itself. Hyne writes marvelously, and uses language that is archaic enough to sound authentic but still remains eminently readable. The character of Deucalion is well drawn and quite likeable, despite his initial aloofness and rigidity; I suppose Hyne would have us believe that this character is the inspiration for the Deucalion of Greek myth. Phorenice makes for a terrific villainess, being beautiful, quite ruthless, lustful, remarkably intelligent, and ambitious. Unfortunately, these very qualities of the Empress lead directly to the downfall of her empire. Besides well-drawn principal and secondary characters, "The Lost Continent" also boasts marvelous detail and color. The capital of Atlantis, as well as its wilder volcanic outer districts, are well depicted, and Hyne tells us something of the lives of the people, the politics and religion of the Atlantean realm. All in all, this truly is a wonderful fantasy, and great escapist entertainment. The University of Nebraska Press, with its Bison Frontiers of Imagination series, is to be commended for making this lost manuscript available again to modern-day readers. I heartily recommend it to all.

Book Description
Stories in both English and Spanish. Atlantis: the lost continent is actually us in the future. As we progress in the sciences and technologies we are building Atlantis and somewhere in the future, Atlantis was destroyed as time meets itself with the past and consequently we are finding Atlantis as an ancient civilization of the past, in the present which is actually the future of us as we are the last city in the future, just as the world came to an end. The other short stories will also stimulate the mind and hopefully it is their final version and they're put to rest, and the chicken will thank you, so will the rooster.
