Firefighting in the olden days.......2006-01-03
This book describes a seasonal firefighters job in 1977. This was before the advent of much of the specialized equipment used today. He also capture the essencial conflict between the resource/ranger staffs and real live firefighters. Reading this book I can feel the B2 unit digging into my back from my green canvas backpack.
Probably the best book I've read on forest firefighting.......1998-10-29
This is a great book, written not from a journalistic point of view nor from an official point of view, but from that of somebody who was a fire boss for over a decade on the Grand Canyon's North Rim fire crew. Written as fiction, although it is based on actual events with only the names changed. Edward Abbey, who worked in a fire tower on the North Rim for a couple of seasons, makes a thinly-disguised cameo appearance here as "Abner". Effectively captures the work, the culture, and the humor of forest firefighters in a way that no other book I've read has. If you're at all interested in the subject I'd recommend picking this up.

I used this book on a trip to Southern California and tried to find of the few ghost towns with a friend. We had a good time locating some on a day trip. Pictures were good but a little old.

Anyone who is a cat lover will love this book..........2000-02-09
and anyone who isn't "owned by a cat", as Taber puts it, will want to be.
In these two books combined into one volume, Taber writes of her day-to-day relationship with her Abyssinian cat named Amber. Taber has intuitive insights into the workings of the feline mind and through this work clearly shows how important pets can be to our daily lives and welfare. Amber was a fortunate cat indeed to have such an owner, or rather, to own Gladys Taber!
Reading this book has made me think of writing my own book about my cat, it was so enjoyable to read about her cat.
I thought of taking one star away due to some of Taber's inaccurate medical advice for cats (i.e. do NOT ever give aspirin to a cat as Taber indicates), but her intentions were good. Just remember while reading this book that for medical advice concerning your cat, see your veterinarian.
I LOVED IT!.......1998-11-14
I loved this book from the first page to the very end. It's a perfect book to read to lift your spirits or to escape into a different world. I absolutely reccomend it to everyone who loves cats.

As the boys convalesce, Robin's mother tells them a strange and wonderful story from her childhood. The answer to the mystery is more amazing than anyone could have imagined.

Amber Cat Book Review.......2004-07-29
Amber Cat was a good book; of course, it was confusing, as all 2 of the 2 books (Dog Friday, Amber Cat) that I read so far by Hilary McKay were. It was confusing as in it didn't exactly give some important details; some so important that you couldn't exactly picture the few scenes, although there were options floating around my head when I read these parts, but none were right, and I will now never know, given to the fact that the author didn't explain the parts and details well enough so that I could see them in my head. But the book made a point, unlike a lot of other books, and it didn't carry on and on with one boring subject, as some other books do also. I also think that Sun Dance's mind was a little jumbled, and that Mrs. Brogan's stories about her childhood were very fascinating and sounded fun. I think that when Robin was going to build a raft, it was not a good idea either. Harriet was very interested and I really enjoyed reading about her and everybody else.
The Amber Cat.......2002-10-16
Robin Brogan,Mrs. Borgan Robin's mother and Robin's best friend Dan are the main characters of the story. The Amber Cat is a sequel to Dog Friday and if you like it you will for sure like the Amber Cat. I read Dog Friday first and liked it but if you read Amber Cat first you might not understand it very well. The Amber Cat goes back to when Robin's mother was a kid. Robin's mother has a friend that was alive when her parents were kids. Mrs. Borgan was telling this story when Robin , Dan, and Sun Dance had the Chicken pox. Robin's uncle Charlie was there one summer when they were kids. He hasn't seen Robin since his dad died. Charlie, Robin's uncle, was coming to visit Robin and his mother. The Amber Cat goes back to when Robins mother was a kid.Why I like these books is because they are strange books and thats the tipe of books that I like. Robin finds a dog and since he found him on Friday Robin calls him Friday.
Chicken Pox Fun.......2001-06-21
This book is about a mother who stays home with three boys while they have the Chicken Pox. She tells them an amazing story about when she was 11 and played at the beach with her cousins and a mysterious girl named Hillary. The author made me feel like I was right there watching them. I felt like I was in a secret world. There were many characters with interesting personalities. The ending left me thinking everything through again in my mind. I would highly recommend this book!
Stick with it.......1998-10-03
This was one month's selection for our Mother-Daughter reading group. Half the group couldn't get past the first three chapters (that's never happened before!), and the other half of the group persevered and finished the book, and LOVED it. The beginning is very confusing and there are so many characters introduced, that it's hard to keep track of who's who. Right up until the last chapter, there are things that are unexplained, so it's like putting a puzzle together AFTER you've read the book. This is a book best read silently by yourself---too complex to read aloud. The author does a wonderful job of weaving magic about how we influence the lives of those around us, as well as those who come after, and how others who came before have influenced our lives. My daughters (9 and 10) and I loved this book.
Who knew chicken pox could be so much fun?.......1998-07-21
As Mrs. Brogan nurses her son along with Dan and Sun Dance, she weaves a marvelous tale of her childhood. It reminds all children that their parents were small once too and thinking that maybe parents are as dull as you might think. The shocking conclusion will leave you waiting on pins and needles for the next book in this funny, exciting series.

Book Description
"Make us something about cats." This dictum, given to the artists and writers who participated in the 2003 Catholic exhibition at Guild & Greyshkul Gallery in New York, produced--beautiful, startling, thought-provoking, sweet, disturbing--results. According to editors/curators Jesse Pearson and Glynnis McDaris, "If they said OEats are pretty,' that was fine. If they said OEats are stupid,' that was fine too. This is Catholic in the spirit of its neglected definition: Having varied tastes. This isn't about eating fish on Fridays . . . . The visual art in Catholic includes photographs by Roe Etheridge, Ryan McGinley, Colin DeLand, Richard Kern, Terence Koh, and Terry Richardson; drawings by artists Jim Drain, Sabrina Mansouri, Pieter Schoolwerth, and Spencer Sweeney; and projects from Le Tigre's JD Samson, Built-by-Wendy's Wendy Mullen, and United Bamboo. Cats also includes Steve Lafreniere's writing on his mother's cat photography, Amber Gayle on brushes with 300-pound mountain lions, Amy Kellner's diatribe on the "Hang in There, Baby" tradition, and a poem from Eileen Myles's pet, Avi.
Customer Reviews:
You Have to Get This.......2007-02-25
Two friends chipped in to give me this book for my birthday and I am so grateful! OK, it looks a little amateur hour, but the designers and editors have come up with a really good way to help settle that uneasy feeling of nausea that comes from looking at too many pictures of cats. I'm of the school that believes my own cats are pretty good looking, but that the cats of others are basically monsters just seeking attention. Magazines like CAT FANCY try to dress up this unpalatable truth and pretend that we all love each other's cats and even cats in shelters. Instead McDaris and Pearson go here for the DIY, not to mention scary look. The endpapers (designed by McDaris) display a hanging spider web of lit filaments (like Shelob) studded with floating cat heads, like an early Judy Bolton mystery. And the writing is pretty cat-skeptical too, especially Amy Kellner's scathing expose of the thinking behind those rancid "Hang in There, Baby" drawings of cats clinging to tree branches and clotheslines. Hate them!
Roe Ethridge has a cat that looks cute, but it's asleep, possibly dead, in this photo, a cat on a blue linen tablecloth with white stitching like a baseball. Steve Lafreniere presents the cats and the cat photos of his mother--at one point, he recalls, there were no fewer than sixteen cats living with them--in Chicago, where the cats are more vulnerable and yet tougher than other cities--its artists too I think. It is more the story of a human, a woman whose passion for photography took her to Rolleiflex but just short of professional status, the ultimate mystery, rather than how cute her cats were. Somehow Ryan McGinley got his cat to climb up a piece of gauze (like Doris Day) and shot it from underneath, light stirring in the cat's left eye like an aspirant to great stardom. I'm not used to gee the George Hurrell side of Ryan McGinley, but here it is. And is that really Bruce LaBruce in Terry Richardson's picture of a masked, naked man crouched over a pan of kitty litter? Bruce, you look gooood!
Had I the time I would comment on every text and picture in the book, but they are mostly all of a piece, and that is, most of them are sort of offputting at first, than one admires the ingenuity and the freshness with which the writers and artists carried out their assignment. Terence Koh, dressing your cat in that flat, white Peggy Lee wig must be a comment of Lee's impersonation of the Siamese in LADY AND THE TRAMP? If not, what is your excuse! You're scaring me here . . .
Most interesting cat book yet!.......2007-01-04
This is not your typical cat book with cutesy photos and silly conceits ( think "why cat's paint"......)
Assorted artists get real with all the angles on the feline world and they dont' hold back. Highly amusing and a visual treat.

This volume pulls together a wealth of up-to-date information on the toxicology of this diverse and ubiquitous class of insecticides. Leading experts review the reactivity of organophosphorus compounds with cholinesterase, as well as their metabolism and biological effects on humans and other nontarget organisms. The book not only covers the anticholinesterase actions of organophosphates, but also other, presumably independent, effects, such as teratogenicity, delayed neuropathy, immunotoxicity, and behavioral toxicity.
Key Features
* Offers crucial overviews of chemical and biochemical reactivity and biological responsiveness of mainly nontarget organisms
* Reviews new developments in assessment of metabolism and disposition of organophosphorus compounds
* Examines organophosphorus compound-induced toxicity mediated by mechanisms other than
inhibition of acetylcholinesterase
* Covers new research on differences in toxicity induced by the variety of organophosphorus
* Analyzes current controversies on the relevance of certain biochemical parameters in actual organophosphate toxicity in vivo

Book Description
The coastal tropics comprise some of the most sensitive and yet the most understudied ecosystems in the world. Coastal plains and river valleys are also home to agriculture on a vast scale, and it is not surprising to find that streams and rivers receive the majority of agricultural runoff, carrying the residues of insecticides, fungicides and other pesticides into estuaries and coastal zones. There is a growing awareness of the urgent need to develop strategies to help productive, healthy and economically viable agriculture to coexist with natural resources. Pesticide Residues in Tropical Coastal Ecosystems brings together toxicology experts from around the world to assess pesticide burdens in many of the major food-producing tropical countries. It provides a unique set of case studies, chronicling pesticide usage and its ecotoxicological impact in coastal regions. A practical guide to recent research findings and applications, it is essential reading for environmental professionals, ecotoxicologists, marinechemists and agrochemists.

The real title should be "Computational Conformal Mapping in 1975." It's far from the state of the art, leaves out major topics and contributions, and has barely any reproducible computation in it. At best an introduction to classical, little-used methods.

Excellent Book.......2006-08-24
I wish the author hadn't died because the Kane novels are some of the better fantasy I have ever read. No wonder they are hard to find, everyone wants them.
Run-of-the-mill.......2006-05-09
A collection of short stories and novella centered on the character of Kane, an (apparently) immortal warrior/sorcerer. The writing is o.k. but the character of Kane seems a little flat to me. It's run-of-the-mill swords and sorcery writing, obviously inspired by Robert Howard (Conan) but not as good.
About time...!.......2005-10-27
A decade after his death, somebody finally got around to compiling a tribute to the late, great Karl Edward Wagner and his greatest creation, the arch-hero, Kane, in a two-volume set: Gods in Darkness, the Complete Novels of Kane, and this volume, The Midnight Sun, which contains all of the short stories, poems, etc., that have been floating around, mostly out of print, for the last decade or so.
Kane was my first experience with Wagner. Back in the '70's, when I was still a wee lad and most of my friends were reading stuff like The Outsiders, I stumbled on a paperback copy of Death Angel's Shadow, the one with the Frazetta cover, and spent the next few nights hiding in bed; under my covers, flashlight on long after midnight, altering my mind with this combination of Robert E. Howard and Lovecraft.
Now, after reading most of his published work, for my buck, the noveletta's contained here are absolutely Wagner's best writing, period. The shorter Kane stories are nightmarishly bizarre, violent, and punchy, unlike Wagner's complete novels which tend to be a bit bloated and have a tendency to lose momentum (although they're still worth reading, by all means). The novel Bloodstone (contained in 'God's') is particularly inconsistent. That seems natural, since Wagner tended to work in the short story format, both in his own work and as the editor of other authors' works, in his many horror anthologies.
As far as the compilations go, they're okay. There are lots of typo's in the text (nitpicky, I know, but c'mon...), and frankly, my biggest gripe - the Ken Kelly covers just stink. Nobody does Wagner and Kane (or fantasy illustration in general) justice like Frank Frazetta.
Anyway. Say what you will about the likes of Lin Carter, L. Sprague de Camp, Manly Wade Wellman, Fritz Leiber, et al, there are really only two masters of what's come to be known as 'dark fantasy': Robert E. Howard, and Wagner.
This volume is great. Pick it up and enjoy.
Title Difference.......2005-08-09
I bought my book about 3 years ago and I still read it over and over again. Out of my little library, this is my favorite book. I was looking at the complete series, and I noticed that one of the stories is called "The Lair of Yslsl" (or something to that extent) and I was wondering if it is the same as "Dark Crusade"
