Antimicrobial Peptides in Human Health and Disease
R. L. Gallo Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1904933106 |
Book Description
This book represents a cutting edge summary of one of the most important fields in innate immunity. Antimicrobial peptides rapidly and directly inhibit infection by microbes and are of enormous importance in the body's natural defense against disease. In addition, the role of antimicrobial peptides in the development of therapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of disease is becoming increasingly important.
Written by the leaders in the field this book provides an understanding of the implications of antimicrobial peptides in human disease. The volume is divided into sections containing reviews of specific families of antimicrobials, select organ systems that have demonstrated a relevance for antimicrobial peptides and, in addition, a more global discussion of these peptides and organs from distinct perspectives. Alternatively, each chapter can stand on its own, providing the reader with the ability to dive right into the subject of most interest.
Topics covered include cathelicidins, alpha and beta defensins, granulysin, hepcidin, the role of antimicrobial peptides in blood, gut, skin, lung and in the oral environment. A recurring theme is the possibility of creating therapeutics that induce the expression of endogenous antimicrobial peptides for the prevention or treatment of disease.

Control of Nonlinear Differential Algebraic Equation Systems with Applications to Chemical Processes (Research Notes in Mathematics Series)
Aditya Kumar , and Prodromos Daoutidis Manufacturer: Chapman & Hall/CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0849306094 |
Book Description
The feedback control of nonlinear differential and algebraic equation systems (DAEs) is a relatively new subject. Developing steadily over the last few years, it has generated growing interest inspired by its engineering applications and by advances in the feedback control of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). This book-the first of its kind-introduces the reader to the inherent characteristics of nonlinear DAE systems and the methods used to address their control, then discusses the significance of DAE systems to the modeling and control of chemical processes. Within a unified framework, Control of Nonlinear Differential Algebraic Equation Systems presents recent results on the stabilization, output tracking, and disturbance elimination for a large class of nonlinear DAE systems. Written at a basic mathematical level-assuming some familiarity with analysis and control of nonlinear ODEs-the authors focus on continuous-time systems of differential and algebraic equations in semi-explicit form. Beginning with background material about DAE systems and their differences from ODE systems, the book discusses generic classes of chemical processes, feedback control of regular and non-regular DAE systems, control of systems with disturbance inputs, the connection of the DAE systems considered with singularly perturbed systems, and finally offers examples that illustrate the application of control methods and the advantages of using high-index DAE models as the basis for controller design. Mathematicians and engineers will find that this book provides unique, timely results that also clearly documents the relevance of DAE systems to chemical processes.

Desperate Remedies (Oxford World's Classics)
Thomas Hardy Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0192840703 |
Book Description
'She was swayed into emotional opinions concerning the strange man before her; new impulses of thought...entered into her with a gnawing thrill.' Hardy's first published work, Desperate Remedies moves the sensation novel into new territory. The anti-hero, Aeneas Manston, as physically alluring as he is evil, even fascinates the innocent Cytherea, though she is in love with another man. When he cannot seduce her, Manston resorts to deception, blackmail, bigamy, murder, and rape. Yet this compelling story also raises the great questions underlying Hardy's major novels, which relate to the injustice of the class system, the treatment of women, probability and causality. This edition shows for the first time that the sensation novel was always Hardy's natural medium.

The Desperate Remedy: Henry Gresham and the Gunpowder Plot
Martin Stephen Manufacturer: Little Brown and Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0316859702 |
Book Description
Thief. Informer. Double-dealer. Pimp. Will Shadwell may not be the most moral of men, but to gentleman spy Henry Gresham, he is invaluable. In the reign of King James I, a man must know his enemies to survive, and Shadwell is one of Gresham's best sources. Then Shadwell is brutally murdered. Before Gresham is able to establish why, he is summoned by the man he fears most: Robert Cecil, the King's Machiavellian Chief Secretary. Cecil wants Gresham to investigate Sir Francis Bacon's private life, but when Gresham begins his inquiries, he uncovers a plot so audacious it is scarcely believable, involving a conspiring clutch of Catholic lords and a trail of gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament.Customer Reviews:
fascinating historical novelization.......2003-03-01
While the foreign spies agitate the oppressed English Catholics, Robert seeks proof of sexual depravity against his most dangerous foe Sir Francis Bacon. He assigns Henry Gresham to obtain the evidence that will fry Bacon. He quickly learns how the agitators inadvertently strengthen the position of their greatest oppressor Robert with their anti-James plots, notably a scheme to blow up Parliament and replace the Scot with a Catholic on the throne. Keeping his own confidence, Henry soon realizes that the diabolical Cecil hired the leaders, Guy Fawkes and Thomas Percy, with an apparent double cross in mind to "earn" the favor of the King. Already in danger due to his secret Catholic beliefs, Henry wonders what to do with what he learned because Cecil will gladly string him up along with the other "traitors".
THE DESPERATE REMEDY: HENRY GRESHAM AND THE GUNPOWDER PLOT is a fascinating novelization of a critical moment in English history that vividly provides the audience with a deep look at surviving the civil religious squabbles that engulfed the English throne in 1605. The story line is cleverly devised so that the history with real people is interwoven into a superbly written espionage plot. Fans of historical tales including romance readers though there is no love story will immensely appreciate Martin Stephen's delightful retelling of the Gunpowder Plot.

Very confusing.......2007-08-04
Not your typical Hardy, which is almost a good thing.......2002-01-31
the story centers around young Cytherea Graye, who becomes a servant to Miss Auclyffe, a woman with a troubled past. There, she encounters Aeneas Manston, the incredibly handsome and charming steward of Miss Auclyffe, and also a man with a dark secret. He falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful girl and sets out to win her. But alas, Cytherea is already in love with the kind Edward Springrove. Who will ultimately win her? What is the mysterious connection between the steward Manston and Miss Auclyffe? When will people learn not to set fires next to their thatched houses??
I really enjoyed this novel, though at times the melodrama was so thick it was humorous. It reminded me of "Jane Eyre" in many ways, though I felt it was more entertaining than that supposedly great english novel. A lot of twists and turns, very well-written, and an ending very different from your usual Hardy downers. Classic literature? Maybe not, but a fun read and a glimpse of England's greatest novelist before he had mastered his craft.
Good insight into a young Thomas Hardy.......2000-08-24
The characters are not as well defined, and the writing not as pithy as in his later prose and poetry, and his literary allusions fall somewhat out of context.
Yet it is a good effort for a young architect in his early thirties who has many great novels to come!
lyrical.......2000-03-29
Yes, Hardy is long dead, but I hope that every reader will allow themselves the chance to be put under his spell.
After reading this, I looked at my whole world a little differently, and was reminded of the fragility of the human heart.

Book Description
Desperate Remedies (1871) is Thomas Hardy's first published novel. After a failed attempt at satire, Hardy turned his talents to writing romances, and thus his first three novels are romances -- very different from his later, darker Wessex novels. Desperate Remedies tells the story of Cytherea Gray, who becomes as lady's maid, although she is in love with Edward Springrove, who is already engaged to marry another young woman. Cytherea then makes a misalliance with the dreadful and possibly murderous Aeneas Manston. With suspense, Aeneas' villainy and treachery are finally revealed, with happy results for Cytherea and Edward. Far different in tone from Hardy's later novels, Desperate Remedies has more Gothic suspense than brooding depression.
