Customer Reviews:
Updated edition, poor overall quality.......2006-10-26
I used this guide for travel in New Caledonia, so my comments don't apply to the Vanuatu section.
I was very disappointed in the quality of information presented in this "completely" rewritten edition. Most historical, political, or other contextualizing information is now gone (I suppose due to space constraints?). Some descriptions were oddly incomplete. For instance, the guide did not specifiy how long a certain hike might take, or how far you would need to walk in what sort of conditions.
Since this edition is both a guide on Vanuatu and on New Caledonia, the index and other shared sections of the book are extremely confusing to use. It was not always clear which country a particular entry or health comment was talking about.
However, this edition contains updated telephone contacts and other new information that is simply not available elsewhere. My recommendation is to buy both this AND the previous New Caledonia edition.

This book is the best I have found about New Caledonia.......2000-08-16
This book is the best I have found about New Caledonia. It is so hard for Americans to find good accurate info on New Caledonia but this book does it all. I knew more about some places than many of the locals. It helped me understand where I was going and helped me better integrate into the society there. Wonderful book. I am a lonely planet person now. :-)

Book Description
This volume surveys the complete range of the Darwin's accomplishments, offering a coherent and consistent treatment of the flow of ideas throughout Darwin's works. Ghiselin constructs a unified theoretical system that explains the major features of Darwin's investigations, evaluating the literature from a historical, scientific, and philosophical perspective.
Customer Reviews:
The Very Best Book on Darwin's Scientific Thought and Work.......2006-03-20
This book deals with Darwin's thought and method - his scientific methodology which is the foundation and the consistent basis for all of Darwin's work. It is not a biography. If you want the best biography, look at Janet Browne's excellent two-volume work. It is not a description of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. If you want that, read Origin of Species first. If you're interested in a modern treatment of evolutionary science, I must recommend a excellent textbook, Douglas Futuyma's Evolutionary Biology.
The Triumph of the Darwinian Method reads somewhat like a critical book review of nearly all of Charles Darwin's writings, and Michael Ghiselin has read them all. Few have, for they include, among other immense books and many technical papers, 1600+ pages of barnacle taxonomy, work which established Darwin among the top scientists of his time, and won him a prestigious Royal Medal. Because of this tedious, painstaking, but brilliant work, Darwin could expect to have his "big species book" taken seriously, but it was also undertaken to answer important questions about these unusual, varied and peculiar animals. Scientists have the greatest respect for this sort of dedicated, careful work. Darwin's barnacle monographs are still the primary references on barnacles today. The "big species book" was never published in toto; instead, Origin was rushed to the printers in 1859.
Besides the Introduction and Conclusions, the book has chapters sequentially dealing with Darwin's Geology, Biogeography and Evolution, Natural Selection, Taxonomy, Barnacles, orchids (titled "A Metaphysical Satire" for good reason), Variation, Evolutionary Psychology, and Sexual Selection, totaling 243 pages. Each deals with one or more of Darwin's books. But they are primarily a way of examining Darwin's method - how he did experiments (he did very many) how he observed, how he theorized, how he evaluated, discarded, or further investigated hypotheses. Ghiselin also shows that Darwin's few mistakes were the result of applying his powerful methodology consistently, but often without benefit of crucial information which later became valuable.
A mark of the value of this work is that the first rank of evolutionists, an extremely contentious bunch of scientists, have uniformly praised it since its first publication in 1969, although some do have minor nits to pick. And this is the more remarkable because Ghiselin pulls no punches when exposing flaws in their works. But he also isn't petty. He does have caustic words for some of the most serious errors of Darwin's less intelligent critics. Referring to the claim by some scientists that taxonomic work could not be used to discover information about relatedness and evolutionary mechanisms, he states:
"Their argument combines the modesty of Schopenhauer with the logic of Mary Baker Eddy; it does not follow from their own lack of imagination that Darwin or anyone else must fail."
This book is admirably concise and not dated at all. This edition includes a six page preface and one page bibliography written by Ghiselin in 2003, as well as the original 43 pages of appendix, chapter notes, and index. It is an important book for the any biologist, Darwin scholar, or scientist interested in the development of ideas, but it is quite accessible to the interested non-scientist.

Book Description
In order to gain a true understanding of core chemistry topics, students need practice and exposure to problem-solving exercises that will act as springboards for conceptual thinking and qualitative understanding. Voyages in Conceptual Chemistry is a collection of 150 problems designed to cover the principles taught in a typical first year chemistry course. The type of conceptual thinking encouraged by this book is meant to supplement, not replace, a regular textbook. It asks students to solve puzzles, interpret observations and design experiments. This book also challenges students to utilize the versatility of general chemistry in solving problems in related subjects which might be studied in the future, such as organic chemistry, quantum mechanics, biochemistry, physical chemistry, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!!.......2005-11-13
This is an awesome, awesome book. The professor who was teaching Freshman Chemistry at my school about 7-8 years ago
ordered copies of this to put in the bookstore as 'optional'
reading. I was already a junior at the time, but I knew
my knowledge of some of the typical freshman chem topics was limited. Because the price wasn't too high, I bought it.
After working even a few of the problems, I'd already learned a lot. The big problem with many 200-level Freshman chem
courses is that they often are no more than exercises in calculator keypunching. The professor rarely does an adequate job explaining the "real world" significance of topics like kinetics, etc. and just expects the students to get all they need by working problems from the textbook. THIS book does NOT require use of a calculator! It makes you think about the concepts behind the material...the problems are usually tough, and they aren't for chickens. You have to explore many of them and spend time looking more deeply into the concepts. If you're not a pre-med, biochem, or chem major, I kinda doubt you'd enjoy or appreciate this book - but if you want a resource to help you learn the stuff at a higher level, this is a good one to use. I wish more freshman chem textbooks had this kind of material. GOOD JOB, MR. BAROUCH!! And there's a good Foreword by prizewinning and respected chemist Dudley Hershbach.
best book in chemistry understanding.......1999-02-22
As a scientist who wrote numerous papers in inorganic and colloidal chemistry I find this book very stimulating as well as very clever. I wish to see more textbooks becoming "brainy" instead of plain cook-books---This should be left to F. Farmer for cooking.

Book Description
Subriemannian geometries, also known as Carnot-Caratheodory geometries, can be viewed as limits of Riemannian geometries. They also arise in physical phenomenon involving "geometric phases" or holonomy. Very roughly speaking, a subriemannian geometry consists of a manifold endowed with a distribution (meaning a $k$-plane field, or subbundle of the tangent bundle), called horizontal together with an inner product on that distribution. If $k=n$, the dimension of the manifold, we get the usual Riemannian geometry. Given a subriemannian geometry, we can define the distance between two points just as in the Riemannin case, except we are only allowed to travel along the horizontal lines between two points.
The book is devoted to the study of subriemannian geometries, their geodesics, and their applications. It starts with the simplest nontrivial example of a subriemannian geometry: the two-dimensional isoperimetric problem reformulated as a problem of finding subriemannian geodesics. Among topics discussed in other chapters of the first part of the book we mention an elementary exposition of Gromov's surprising idea to use subriemannian geometry for proving a theorem in discrete group theory and Cartan's method of equivalence applied to the problem of understanding invariants (diffeomorphism types) of distributions. There is also a chapter devoted to open problems.
The second part of the book is devoted to applications of subriemannian geometry. In particular, the author describes in detail the following four physical problems: Berry's phase in quantum mechanics, the problem of a falling cat righting herself, that of a microorganism swimming, and a phase problem arising in the $N$-body problem. He shows that all these problems can be studied using the same underlying type of subriemannian geometry: that of a principal bundle endowed with $G$-invariant metrics.
Reading the book requires introductory knowledge of differential geometry, and it can serve as a good introduction to this new exciting area of mathematics.

Book Description
This book collects invited contributions by specialists in the domain of elliptic partial differential equations and geometric flows. The articles provide a balance between introductory surveys and the most recent research, with a unique perspective on singular phenomena. Notions such as scans and the study of the evolution by curvature of networks of curves are completely new and lead the reader to the frontiers of the domain.
The intended readership are postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations that arise from variational problems, as well as researchers in related fields such as particle physics and optimization.
Book Description
The most comprehensive collection ever assembled gathers every poem Emerson published during his lifetime along with the best of the unpublished verse from his manuscripts, journals, and notebooks to offer readers for the first time the full range of his astonishing poetry. Includes poems hitherto available only in specialized scholarly versions, as well as revealing translations of mystical, sensuous Persian poems and of Dante's "Vita Nuova."
Customer Reviews:
The poetry of mind is only sometimes soulful.......2005-11-07
The aphoristic, enigmatic, cryptic, verse of Emerson is collected here in its entirety. Much comes from his notebooks and journals. Emerson was criticized among others by Mathew Arnold for lacking ' the soul' of the poet. And it is true that the music of his verse is often a rough, awkward, intellectual one. And that what is memorable in it comes as a line here or there which could well come from his essays.
Nonetheless there are memorable lines and a few poems which enter the heart and mind, perhaps because once read in childhood anthology they remain as part of one's inner landscape. For me Emerson as a poet is primarily isolated like the most memorable Emerson of all,
" By the rude bridge/ that arched the flood/ their flag the April breeze unfurled /Here once the embattled farmers stood and fired' "The shot heard round the world".
In another sense Emerson appreciated Poetry and was the patron , and capable of recognizing the great value of , arguably, the ur- American poet, Whitman.
Reading the poetry is often a quite complicated intellectual exercise. But it is also one which yields new ideas, though perhaps those ideas are not felt as deeply as poetry should make us feel.
