Customer Reviews:
Beauty and Awe.......2007-09-01
Many controversies surround the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell related to environmental concerns and I share some of these. Nevertheless Gary Ladds book is a brilliant photoessay which proves that out of bad policy decisions great beauty may serendipitously arise. I have travelled and photographed these regions for more than 20 years and these pictures are so beautiful and vivid, providing at times panoramic and at times intimate views of this beautiful canyon country, that my breath is taken away.
Not enough photos of Gary Ladd...but the photos of Lake Powell are GREAT........2005-10-02
For many people, the name Lake Powell conjures up images of a blue lake among red rock--of boating over a sprawling, azure sheen of unbroken water, beneath high, vermilion sandstone walls. It calls to mind shorelines lined with tamarisks and cottonwoods, bays mottled with preening mergansers and watchful egrets, water caves full of reflected light, and sunsets mirrored by a shining, landlocked ocean.
For others, the name alone is enough to make them start shaking in anger and sadness. For those, Lake Powell is not a lake at all. It's a misbegotten reservoir. It's a crime. It's all that lies between them and the legendary, long lost Glen Canyon-a stretch of the Colorado River so inviting, so overwhelming, and so full of secrets, it's often been called the Grand Canyon's lovelier sibling.
Unlike Cataract Canyon upstream, and the Grand Canyon downstream, Glen Canyon was a tranquil place with currents friendly enough for even the most boyish of Boy Scouts and the oldest of old ladies. Edward Abbey considered it the heart of the canyon lands. The residents of White Canyon, Utah--a town since submerged by Lake Powell--considered it home. The Bureau of Reclamation just considered it a good place to build a dam.
That dam, Glen Canyon Dam, was built in the early-1960s, to create a reservoir in which to store the water of the Colorado River for the states that needed it, to use the river's water to turn turbines and generate lucrative electricity, to control the Colorado River's seasonal flooding, to bring visiting boaters and their money in from all around the world, and to stop water-borne silt and sediment from clogging Lake Mead, an even larger reservoir downstream. The 710-foot-tall Glen Canyon Dam blocked the path of the Colorado River, the trapped river backed up behind the dam, and everywhere the water could go, it did. It covered multiple rivers, created bays, filled Glen Canyon and side canyons and coves, drowned beavers and snakes and trees, and turned buttes and spires into islands. It changed an almost two hundred-mile-long stretch of the Colorado River into Lake Powell, into a deep, manmade lake with about 1,960 miles of ragged, convoluted shoreline-a shoreline longer than America's West Coast.
And then, then there was Gary Ladd.
Gary Ladd knew Glen Canyon, and initially hated Lake Powell for inundating it. But then over time, he realized Lake Powell had a very real beauty, a beauty all its own, regardless of its origins, and he started to take pictures of it.
And his pictures were gorgeous.
And here they are.
Right here in this book.
Buy this book, and dive into the colors and textures that Gary Ladd manages to capture on film: the blues and the reds, the sugar cookie textures of sandstone, and the shocks of color-filled flowers that burst like life itself up from acres of barren rock.
Buy it, set it on your coffee table, and watch the discussions begin.

Book Description
During their decade-long collaboration (1985-1995), Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler produced some of the most influential conceptual art projects of the time. Among their witty and stimulating installations and outdoor projects was Camouflaged History, a house painted in a U.S. Army-designed camouflage pattern using 72 commercial paint colors included in the municipally-approved "authentic colors" of historic Charleston, South Carolina. The commercial name of each paint, commemorating an aspect of the city's history, is also painted on the house, revealing and illuminating the lingering Civil War-era past of the region. Like the Earthwork pioneers, Ericson and Ziegler took the whole country as their working space; but rather than impose a conspicuous work of art upon a site or situation, they devised projects that altered sites subtly, creating a patchwork of poetic narratives and histories to be excavated. The windows rescued from the old National Licorice factory in Philadelphia in the title piece America Starts Here--which takes its name from the slogan used to promote Pennsylvania tourism during the 1980s--are hung according to the location of the original windows in the factory; the cracks in the glass echo the famous cracks in two of Philadelphia's tourist attractions, the Liberty Bell and Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass.
Kate Ericson's death from cancer in 1995 at age 39 made the body of Ericson and Ziegler's collaborative work finite. America Starts Here offers a generous selection of Ericson and Ziegler's work, with much of it reproduced in color, and provides a critical analysis of the artists' still under-appreciated position in the history of twentieth-century art. It accompanies the first retrospective exhibition of Ericson and Ziegler's work.
Copublished with The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College and List Visual Arts Center at MIT.

Unprejudiced Father and Stepmother.......2007-02-18
An incredibly fine documentation of the work of two amazing conceptual artists whose work was devoted to exploring the basics of American life and history and exploding them into amazing works that forced one to look at the American world in new and engaging ways. Every project was the result of faithful research, interaction with the community, respect for tradition and their own personal contributions to the community at large.
The quality of the publication itself is a monument to Mel and Kate's work. Tang and MIT are to be lauded for their accomplishment.

Dear Great-Grandma.......2004-11-08
i miss you great-grandma, but i hope this makes you proud because i remember us reading it at East 13th St. with the el train railing by every two minutes, and what the light looked like playing over the wall of the backroom at three in the morning when i was sleeping over. and i love you so much, and this isn't a fitting memorial, but i was only ten. and there will be a better one for you.
Lovely!.......2003-08-10
This delightful and charming book is my daughter's favourite to read when I put her to bed at night. It is a shame to know that this book is out of print. We cherish it dearly. Hopefully Miss De Sena will go on to better and brighter things, with this as a wonderful stepping stone to achieve her dreams. History is made here in this tiny book!
INCREDIBLE NEW CHILDREN'S CLASSIC!.......2002-10-22
This fanciful, charming story was written by a girl who was only 12 at the time she came up with the idea! Knowing this, it has inspired me to follow my dreams and not wait until I 'grow up.' The way Miss De Sena uses sophisticated, yet understandable language, with a colorful story, is amazing. A great read for any age, and a great inspiration!
BABU'S BABUSHKA.......2000-07-21
This book is a great story for people of all ages to enjoy. It is about a magical babushka owned by Babu. It has many adventures in many different places. Some of the places the babushka travels to are Babu's cottage, a carpenter's home, and a boat. Bronwen DeSena, the author, is very talented and expresses her thoughts in a very colorful way. Because of this, her book is funny and easy to enjoy. Toddlers to adults can have a lot of laughs following the babushka's journeys. So buy and read this delighful book!
babushka.......2000-07-14
this beautiful story was written by a young girl (only 12!) and is sure to go down as a classic in children's literature. this open-ended story is a wonderful one because the moral is that if you share your good fortune with someone else, everybody will be satisfied and happy. gotta go, bye!
Customer Reviews:
an excellent book in a wonderful series for children.......2001-09-07
This great book on Ancient Egypt provides a brief history of Ancient Egypt, through its river, its numerous pharaohs, its trade, religion, mummies, pyramids, culture, and medicine. A short glossary is made available. Recommended for youngsters, ages 8 to 10.
Easy for children to understand!.......2001-04-07
I think this book is easy to understand for children in the 1st and 2nd grade at least. My son read this book for a book report on Egypt and talked about the things he learned for days later. "Mom did you know this and Mom did you know that..." Definitly a great book for school.

Book Description
One of the most innovative and interesting characters to make a place for himself in the 1960s British art scene, Hamish Fulton developed a personal art form based on walking. Through photographs and texts, colors and words, this artists's book represents the space and time covered by Fulton during a 43-day coast-to-coast walk. On the pavements, roads, and paths of Portugal, Spain, the Basque Region, the Pyrenees, and France, Fulton trod a trail that started at the mouth of the Douro river in Porto and ended at the delta of the river Ebro in Catalonia.

The Legacy of John Cyclone.......2000-02-22
I really loved this children's book and so did my children. It is a tender tall tale by a talented young boy about a very large guy with a big heart who spends his time creating mountains and lakes and helping others. The illustrations are beautiful and compliment the story well. We all really loved this book and its message of kindness to others!

Book Description
Regardless of whether they’ve heard of jazz or Art Tatum, young readers will appreciate how Parker uses simple, lyrical storytelling and colorful and energetic ink-and-wash illustrations to show the world as young Art Tatum might have seen it. Tatum came from modest beginnings and was nearly blind, but his passion for the piano and his acute memory for any sound that he heard drove him to become a virtuoso who was revered by both classical and jazz pianists alike. Included in the back matter is a biography and bibliography.

Description:
Because of the risk that residues of antibacterial growth promoters in edible tissues could lead to allergic reactions and development of resistant strains of bacteria in humans, the European Commission decided to ban bacitracin, olaquindox, spiramycin, tylosin and virginiamycin as feed additives. To control the compliance of this ban, a single multi-analyte liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed in 2003. Starting from this method, we further tried to optimise the response with the aid of experimental design. Using a central composite design, we searched for the optimal extraction solvent for each of the five components separately. As expected, this optimal composition was different for each of these antibacterial growth promoters. Two groups of compounds could be distinguished. The first group contained those compounds (spiramycin, tylosin and virginiamycin) that had the highest response (peak area) when the extraction solvent consisted of pure methanol (with or without the addition of formic acid). The second group contained the components (bacitracin and olaquindox) that preferred between 50 and 70% (v/v) methanol as extraction solvent. To find a compromise between these two groups, we created weighed utility functions and analysed these data with linear regression (@a
< 0.05). The extraction solvent that gave the overall best response for the type of feed used during this experiment was very similar to the extraction solvent used during the validation of the multi-analyte method (70% (v/v) methanol and 2% (v/v) formic acid) [C. Van Poucke, K. De Keyser, A. Baltusnikiene, J.D.G. McEvoy, C. Van Peteghem, Anal. Chim. Acta 483 (2003) 99]. Finally, a recovery experiment was set up using different types of feed to identify if the outcome of this experiment was valid for all types of feedstuffs.

Description:
Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) are discharged into the environment as sub-products of linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) detergent. Their association with LAS is attributed to the incomplete sulfonation of the LABs in detergent manufacturing resulting in products having LAB. Recently there has been widespread interest in their use as markers of sewage effluent in the aquatic environment. Although LABs may be potentially useful in assessing the distribution and degradation of domestic wastewater, studies about it are still limited probably due to the analytical difficulties. In this article, a new analytical method for the determination of LABs in detergents using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in combination with solid phase microextraction (SPME) is proposed. This alternative sample preparation technology presents several advantages, since it is solvent free, fast, uses the whole sample for analysis, requires only small amounts of sample and the fibers for the extraction procedure are reusable. A factorial experimental design was utilized to obtain the optimum values for the main operational parameters in the analysis of LABs in detergents using direct SPME in the pre-concentration step.

Description:
Recently, infectious diseases have delayed the growth of shrimp aquaculture. Interest has been focused on immune molecules and defense mechanisms to reduce these diseases in shrimp aquaculture. In invertebrates, various immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) molecules have been characterized in body tissues and fluids, which play a significant role in innate defense. In the current study, we found that a protein in shrimp serum, referred as an IgG-like protein, could be reacted with goat anti-human IgG, specifically. The IgG-like protein was purified from the serum of shrimp Penaeus vannamei by affinity chromatography using CNBr-activated sepharose 4B. The purified protein was subsequently analysed using one-dimensional sodium sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1-DE), two-dimensional sodium sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and immunoblotting. Furthermore, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and quadrupole time-of-flight (Q-TOF) tandem mass spectrometry methods were used for peptide mass fingerprint (PMF) and sequencing of the protein, respectively. Sequence information and PMF queried against the NCBI database confirmed the identity of the protein as hemocyanin. Conserved domain search showed that there was an Ig-like conserved domain of 252 amino acid residues in the C-terminus of arthropoda hemocyanins. In addition, four and one conserved regions were found between hemocyanin and human Ig heavy chain and Ig kappa chain, respectively. These results indicate that in addition to copper-binding domains hemocyanin has an Ig-like conserved domain, which would confer some new functions to multifunctional respiratory pigment of crustaceans.

Book Description
The numerical treatment of partial differential equations with particle methods and meshfree discretization techniques is a very active research field both in the mathematics and engineering community. Due to their independence of a mesh, particle schemes and meshfree methods can deal with large geometric changes of the domain more easily than classical discretization techniques. Furthermore, meshfree methods offer a promising approach for the coupling of particle models to continuous models. This volume of LNCSE is a collection of the papers from the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Meshfree Methods held in September 2003 in Bonn. The articles address the different meshfree methods (SPH, PUM, GFEM, EFGM, RKPM, etc.) and their application in applied mathematics, physics and engineering. The volume is intended to foster this new and exciting area of interdisciplinary research and to present recent advances and results in this field.

Customer Reviews:
Aristophanes attacks Socrates the sophist as a Sophist.......2004-05-13
The legend is that when Aristophanes' comedy "The Clouds" was first performed in Athens in 423 B.C., his target, Socrates, stood throughout the performance so that everyone in the audience was aware that he was there and hearing what was said of him. The portrait of Socrates clearly satirical and most critics consider it to be inaccurate. But Aristophanes is making fun of Athens' renowned "Think-tank" the "Phrontisterion," the school where the rich young men of Athens were taught the fine art of rhetoric. Instead of anything lofty the comic poet suggests the primary purpose of such an education is to be clever and out-reason greedy creditors. This is an especially good translation of the play, which includes insightful notes and essays on both Old Comedy and the Theater of Dionysus that helps readers understand the conventions of staged comedy at the time of Aristophanes.
In this comedy Socrates is consulted by an old rogue, Strepsiades (sometimes translated as "Twisterson"), who is upset with the mountain of debts his playboy son Phidippides, who loves fast horses and fast living. Phidippides agrees to go to Socrates' school of logic where he can learn to make a wrong argument sound right. After graduation is able to use the system of "unjust logic" to outwit his father and kick him out of the family home. The Chorus of Clouds comments on the proceedings and in the end the Phrontisterion is burned to the ground by Strepsiades.
The flaw of the play is Aristophanes is trying to satirize the Sophists, who were popularizing a new philosophy that denied the possibility of ever reaching objective truth, he picked the wrong target. The Sophists were mostly teachers who were not native to Athens, such as Isocartes and Gorgias. "Sophist" basically meant teacher, so while Socrates was a "sophist" he was not a "Sophist." Twenty-four years later, when Socrates was condemned to death for "corrupting the youth of Athens," the only accuser he said he could name was a certain "comic poet." For contemporary audiences who are untutored in the traditions of classical Greek philosophy it is easy to see Socrates as the prototype for the absent-minded professor, but historically that is, of course, far from the truth. Ironically, even today, Socrates is still one of the few "sophists" that a contemporary audience would recognize by name if not by reputation.
The version of "The Clouds" that has passed down to us is not the original version, which was defeated by Cratinus' "Wine Flask" at a comedy competition during the Great Dionysia celebrations. We know this is a revised version because the Chorus complains about Aristophanes finishing third in that competition. However, critics assume it is essentially the same play, albeit a more polished version. Once you forgive Aristophanes for his unfair characterization of Socrates, "The Clouds" is a great comedy employing all of his standard tricks of the trade from fantasy and ribaldry to funny songs and obscene words.
