This book made me change from atheism to agnosticism........1999-09-15

To understand Wilder-Smith's ability to produce such a profound spiritual change, it's necessary to understand my personal background. Although I was the grandson of a Protestant pastor, I decided (at the age of 9) that I was an atheist. Reading "Man's origin, man's destiny" helped me to change again from atheism to agnosticism.

In the first part of the book, (entitled "Man's Origin") Wilder-Smith uses powerful scientific arguments to show that the idea of a God makes sense. His use of the law of entropy (the second law of thermodynamics) made the most impression on me, even though I hadn't yet met this law in my educational studies. This was the part of the book that made me shift from atheism to agnosticism.

In the second half of the book (entitled "Man's Destiny"), Wilder-Smith tries to convince the reader that the ideas of Adam and Eve, the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and the whole of Christianity makes sense. He failed to make me see this, due to Christianity's many internal contradictions and its failure to correlate with scientifically observable reality. A worthwhile contribution to the debate on Christianity's relevance to the real world.

I'm skeptical about Frommer's suggestions.......2002-04-23

I used the 1999 edition of this book to plan my honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas in June of 2000. Based on the book's stellar review of Solmar Suites, we reserved an ocean view room there for the duration of our two week stay in Cabo.

We were VERY disappointed with Solmar. While the grounds, pool and restaurant at this hotel were nice, our room was awful. How so?

-A concrete slab was used in place of a box spring for our bed.
-There were several cockroaches in our room.
-There was no refrigerator, as indicated in the room description.
-Furnishings were very outdated, and unattractive.
-The drain in our shower didn't work, and kept backing up.
-Hotel management was unresponsive when we complained, in spite of the fact that we indicated we were there on our honeymoon.
-While Frommer's said Solmar's fishing fleet was "first rate", we found their boats and equipment to be very outdated.

The whole experience made me think that someone at Solmar must have given Frommer's a big, fat pay-off in order to get the review they were given. I couldn't think of any other reason this place would have been so highly regarded.

Ever since then, when I travel, I use FODOR'S travel guides - not FROMMER'S. I've found Fodor's reviews to be right on the money, and if I had taken their advice (staying, perhaps, at the Westin on the corridor), our honeymoon would have been a much nicer experience.

I hope you find this review helpful. If I can save even one person from the nightmare we experienced, I'll be very pleased.

Something for everyone--comprehensive yet concise.......2000-04-05

There's a lot of great information packed into this small volume--whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, whale watching, a party scene, or a pampering spa experience. It's clear that the author, Lynne Bairstow, knows Mexico inside and out. Look for the especially informed reviews of Baja's golf courses. The cover alone makes me want to go there!

It ain't all Moby Dick.......2002-03-16

If you think that you can't read classic American Literature because it's all so big and intimidating (i.e., Moby Dick) think again. Some of the short stories in this collection of Melville's "other" work are incredibly well-written insights into human nature. (As is Moby Dick, but I digress).

Billy Budd's encounter with "justice," Bartleby's statement that he would "prefer not", Benito Cerino's exploration of slavery-- these tales are not to be missed. You should read this book as a starter, then move on to the BIG OLD white whale.

The Lonesome Latter Years.......2001-05-12

Darkly humorous, cynical, horrific and melancholy, Melville's later works are the capstone to the author's deepening discontent with his America. The vision here can be frustrating: Melville conjures up the most painful, soul-searching mysteries, and then refuses to knot them up with tidy solutions. Instead, Melville deepens the moral ambiguity that seeped through the skin of the transitional Moby Dick in full-length works like Pierre and Billy Budd, Sailor. And the shorter works--among them The Piazza Tales, Benito Cereno, and Bartleby the Scrivener--are imbued with such a longing for any kind of graspable meaning, that their readers, like their characters, find themselves in a ponderous state of shock. The human condition, Melville seems to say, is one of isolation, cast adrift, searching alone for a truth that is, and always will be, inscrutable.
