5 out of 5 stars Accessible introduction to a complex field.......2006-07-14

This book is advertised as a text for the lay person that can also serve as a textbook for levels ranging from high school to graduate school. Unfortunately, this is a drawback, as the book tries to be all things to all people. The book is written in a conversational style and makes use of numerous cartoon drawings in its explanations. Most of the diagrams are very helpful. However, some drawings are somewhat juvenile and cheesy with faces drawn on enzymes, for example. Extra wide margins contain definitions of words used in the adjacent text as well as occasional jokes and anecdotes. Molecular terms are redefined whenever they are used, so you can skip around in the book with no problem understanding what is being presented.

The introductory chapter compares the molecular biology revolution with the industrial revolution. The next few chapters review bacteria, basic genetics, and the molecular basis of heredity. These are followed by chapters on the basics of DNA replication, transcription, and proteins. All these fundamentals are very well covered, and the diagrams illustrate the points well.

The next few chapters review various techniques including gene transfer in bacteria, with subjects such as transformation and plasmids being well covered. There is also coverage of DNA manipulation including purification, restriction enzymes, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Other chapters concerning methodology cover PCR and DNA sequencing. There is a very good chapter on transgenics that includes micro-injection, knock-outs, and reporter genes. One chapter is devoted specifically to the techniques of molecular biology. This contains a rather brief overview of a wide array of techniques such as bandshift assays, detection systems, FACS, and RFLP that could easily have been expanded. Other chapters focus on the applied side of molecular technology with discussions of topics such as biotechnology products and forensic medicine. The book also brings the subject matter home with very good chapters on inherited diseases as well as cancer and aging, and shows how biology at the molecular level comes into play in each of these matters.

Overall, there is a strong emphasis on DNA at the expense of RNA. Similarly, there is not much information on protein analysis. Even the authors cannot keep up with the speed of the molecular biology revolution, since a number of current popular techniques, such as differential display and quantitative PCR, are only briefly mentioned or are not even included.

Overall, Molecular Biology Made Simple and Fun contains" some useful information, especially with respect to DNA techniques and applications. This book would probably be most applicable as a supplementary textbook for an introductory college class on molecular biology or as a reference guide to look up unfamiliar molecular techniques, such as ones that might be encountered in journal articles. I think it might be too advanced for high school students. I found it a fairly accessible read and very informative, and my background is in engineering and computer science, not biology, other than what I took as a college undergraduate. I highly recommend it.

The table of contents is as folows:
1. Introduction.
2. Bacteria: The Molecular BIologists's Guinea Pigs

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory book, but beware of paper quality in 3rd ed.......2006-04-18

As the title says it,it is a great book. The book is so well written. I fist came across this book online and borrowed the second edition from the library. I am an electrochemist and I thoroughly enjoy and understand this book. If you want to learn about molecular biology, where the science is going etc., this is a good book to start with. If you are into investing and would like to understand a bit about what the nerdy scientists are talking about, this book will armor you with that knowledge.

Having said that, I recently bought the third edition and have to say that I am not satisfied with the quality. For $50, we get a book which looks like one of those eastern pirated copies. There are no margins in the book to make notes. The paper quality is so bad that you can see the back page contents while reading and it is annoying. If I were you, I would save money and buy the second edition instead. The second edition has pretty much the same content. I would return this book if Amazon were to refund the entire money!

5 out of 5 stars STRONG BUY .......2005-11-15

Just a witty book to introduce the foundations of molecular biology. Keeps you smiling while you learn. If you have to buy a book of this nature, then this is definitely the one to get. In fact, if I had enough money I'd buy you one, it's that good. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Molecular Biology.......2005-10-03

I was working with a team of non-scientists that were embarking on a market study focused on customers in the Molecular Biology field. This book (which we referred to as "The Monkey Book") has been a great introduction to provide an overview of the basics of Molecular Biology and common terms/techniques used in the industry.

The book has a lot of humor built in too...which makes its reading very enjoyable.

I would say this is a must-have for those looking to begin learning about Molecular Biology.

5 out of 5 stars Great Review.......2005-06-10

If you are looking to recap and review biology, this is a great book. I graduated with a degree in biology and wish I would have had this book to simplify and guide me through college. For simple explanations that are easy to understand, especially if you forget certain concepts, you should purcahse this book. This is a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book to Introduce Yellowtone and Beyond.......2005-08-31

Planning a trip out west to visit the National Parks, Bach's book was one of my first purchases. I'm glad I did. It not only prepared me for Yellowstone, but it also prepared me for my visits to Glacier and Yosemite National Parks. The gear lists and the general guidelines for hiking in the backcountry were invaluable in preparing a beginner backcountry hiker to the path ahead.

        5 out of 5 stars Yellowstone Yes.......2002-03-13

This is the best trails book for any of the mountain states national parks. I have not found a book for Glacier or Rocky Mountain National parks as good as this book. The Kent and Donna Dannen guide to RMNP comes close. This book may look as if it is for backpackers, but it has lots of info for day hikes, too.

Bach does a wonderful job of describing each hike in brief detail. The book guides you in every direction, from locating the trailhead to the start and finish of each hike. As he describes each significant turn of the trail, he also points out natural features and wildlife to watch for. A great addition to your Yellowstone library.

                  Product Description

The Dictionary of Oriental Literature fills a long-felt gap in Oriental studies by presenting a concise summary, in three volumes and about 2000 articles, of practically all the literatures of Asia and North Africa. The first volume describes the Chinese, Tibetan, Japanese, Korean and Mongolian literatures; the second covers the area of South and South-East Asia, comprising, besides all literatures of India and Pakistan, those of Nepal, Bangladesh, Ceylon, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines; and the third is devoted to the numerous literatures of West Asia and North Africa, including on the one hand the literatures of the ancient Near East and Egypt, and on the other those of the Asian territory of the USSR, of Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and of the various Arab countries including Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The majority of the entries give information about the life and work of the individual writers and poets of the classical, mediaeval and modern periods of the literatures included and also attempt to evaluate their writings from the historical and aesthetic point of view. The remaining articles describe literary terms, genres, forms, schools, movements, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A concised and unified overview on soft matter.......2004-01-19

This book contains a concised overview on soft matter physics or what chemists use to call colloid chemistry. As stated by the author in the Preface, it has been written primarily for undergraduate students. However, it should be also useful to researchers that are looking for a unified view of the subject. The book is organized in five chapters: 1) Introduction, 2) Polymers, 3) Colloids, 4) Amphiphiles, and 5) Liquid crystals. Each chapter includes both FURTHER READING and QUESTIONS sections (numerical solutions to the questions are provided at the end of the book). All in all this quasi-pocket book appear to have reached its scope, I think, and hence I rated it with five stars. Readers that want to dig deeper into this subject may consult the book Soft Matter Physics: an Introduction, by Kleman and Lavrentovich (648 pp). Those wishing to take an intermediate step, may consult the recently published book Soft Condensed Matter by Jones (230 pp).

                          Book Description

Liquid crystals allow us to perform experiments that provide insight into fundamental problems of modern physics, such as phase transitions, frustration, elasticity, hydrodynamics, defects, growth phenomena, and optics (linear and non linear). This excellent volume meets the need for an up-to-date text on liquid crystals. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments is a result of personal research and of the graduate lectures given by the authors at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the University of Paris VII, respectively. The first part of the book presents historical background, the modern classification of liquid crystals, and mesogenic anatomy; the second part examines liquid crystals with nematic and cholesteric orientational order. Topics include dielectric and magnetic properties, Frederiks transitions and displays, light scattering, flow and electrohydrodynamic instabilities, surface anchoring transitions, interfaces, equilibrium shapes, and the Mullins-Sekerka instability. Smectic and columnar liquid crystals are covered in more detail by the authors in a separate volume, entitled Smectic and Columnar Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments. The presentation is illustrated throughout by simple experiments, some of which were performed in class. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments provides a useful reference intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in liquid crystals, condensed matter physics, and materials science.

                              Book Description

Liquid crystals are fluids with directionality defined. Polymers are long molecules with a shape that can be changed. As a network, polymers form rubber-a soft solid that is locally liquid-like and capable of huge extension. Liquid crystal elastomers area combination of all these curious
aspects, but with additional, revolutionary new phenomena-for example, spontaneous shape changes of several hundred percent induced by temperature change, with equally large opto-mechanical responses, shape change without energy cost (Soft elasticity), color change with strain, lasing and photonics,
sensitivity to molecular handedness and soft solid ferroelectricity. This book is a primer for liquid crystals, polymers, rubber and elasticity. It then describes the theory and experiment of these remarkable materials for the first time as a monograph. Worked examples are solved so that the
reader can become proficient in the field himself. The book is directed at physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians at the graduate level and beyond.

The Storming Media report number is A392723. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Marine Corps' purpose of reporting equipment readiness ratings is to reflect both the portion of equipment possessed by an organization and the ability to perform its wartime mission. Supply ratings generated by the current methodology do an adequate job of reflecting the portion of equipment available for use, but the readiness ratings fall short of representing the unit's true war-fighting ability. The current method used to compute readiness ratings reflects the percentage, or fraction, of readiness reportable items rated that are on-hand and in an operational condition. Under this method, any reportable item that is declared as being in a deadlined maintenance condition will impact the readiness rating with an equal weight, regardless of the critical nature of the item. This thesis proposes a better way of computing the readiness rating in order to ensure it represents the true war-fighting capability of the unit instead of a mere perce

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A099133. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Building software systems from reusable software components has been a goal of software engineers for nearly three decades. Despite progress, the realization of this goal remains surprisingly elusive. Expensive hardware systems such as aircraft, communication networks, and factory assembly lines are designed so that various subsystems (both hardware and software) can be removed and replaced in order to change the performance and functionality of the overall system. In a similar manner, it should be possible to change the behavior of a component-based software system in useful and predictable ways by removing and replacing entire components. In order to perform component-level maintenance, an engineer must understand not only the structural relationships but also the behavioral relationships among the component to be replaced, the system, and the replacement component. These behavioral relationships need to be clearly documented and available to engineers developing and maintaining component-based systems. This dissertation presents a small set of precisely defined relationships that concisely express behavioral relationships between software components. These relationships may be used to provide implementers and maintainers with useful information about how components can and should be composed when integrated into component-based systems. Furthermore, these relationships encourage strict adherence to the well-established software engineering principles of modularity, information hiding, polymorphism, and extendibility.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A121514. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Automatic target recognition (ATR) using radar commonly relies on modeling a target as a collection of point scattering centers, Features extracted from these scattering centers for input to a target classifier may be constructed that are invariant to translation and rotation, i.e., they are independent of the position and aspect angle of the target in the radar scene. Here an iterative approach for building effective scattering center models is developed, and the shape space of these models is investigated. Experimental results are obtained for three-dimensional scattering centers compressed to nineteen-dimensional feature sets, each consisting of the singular values of the matrix of scattering center locations augmented with the singular values of its second and third order monomial expansions. These feature sets are invariant to translation and rotation and permit%it the comparison of targets modeled by different numbers of scattering centers. A metric distance metric is used that effectively identifies targets under "real world" conditions that include noise and obscuration.

                                            Book Description

This book discusses systematically treatment on the development of stochastic, statistical and state space models of the HIV epidemic and of HIV pathogenesis in HIV-infected individuals, and presents the applications of these models. The book is unique in several ways: (1) it uses stochastic difference and differential equations to present the stochastic models of the HIV epidemic and HIV pathogenesis; in this sense, the deterministic models are considered as special cases when the numbers of different type of people or cells are very large; (2) it provides a critical analysis of deterministic and statistical models in the literature; (3) it develops state space models by combining stochastic models and statistical models; and (4) it provides a detailed discussion on the pros and cons of the different modeling approaches.

This book is the first to introduce state space models for the HIV epidemic. It is also the first to develop stochastic models and state space models for the HIV pathogenesis in HIV-infected individuals.

The pieces that are collected in here cover a very wide range of subjects and approaches.

It's a relief, compared to many other anthologies, which try to find an arbitrary common thread which runs through the works of particular writers, or that seem designed to showcase a who's who among the decade's latest MFA students.

Most of the pieces are actually readable, which sounds like a strange thing to say, unless you've been going through a lot of anthologies these days. It's just the right length so you're not overwhelmed with material, but you also get a good snapshot of where Hmong writing is headed, and how good it can get.

Not all of the pieces are perfect, mind you. Not all of them are family friendly. Some come from some pretty dark corners of the human mind, even. But for a culture and a community that is only just now starting to develop a written tradition, the results that are emerging are fascinating.

Some will have very clear influences from other major writers and schools of thought, while others are immensely original.

The great strength of this anthology, however, is that it does not allow you to walk away with a preset stereotype about who the Hmong are. You will see the great diversity of visions within the community, and you will walk away wanting more.

And in the end, isn't that what any good anthology should do?

Finally the voices are coming together. For so long I've wondered if I was the only Hmong person plagued with the wonderful ailment of irrepressible thoughts that run through your mind and onto paper. Now I know that I am not alone. This is a great book, and it's so about time, that we produce a book about the Hmong people written by the Hmong people. I highly recommend it. Buy more then one copy, because it makes a great gift.
