Brad Olsen has four recommendations for today's college graduates: work abroad, study abroad, volunteer abroad, travel abroad. Olsen took his own three-year, self-financed, solo journey to 28 countries on 5 continents after his graduation from business school, and World Stompers, now in its fifth incarnation, is his travel manifesto for other intrepid young people willing to travel for extended periods on the cheap. His is a candid book: while he waxes prolific on the benefits of freestyle traveling, he also lays out the inevitable setbacks and hardships. And while Olsen clearly likes to party while he travels (hence the sections "Stoner's Trail" and "Partyer's Trail"), he's clear about the need for self-confidence and discipline. The book's best chapters discuss setting goals for the three elements essential to planning a stomp: time, money, and desire, with an emphasis on disciplined savings habits, achievable objectives, and old-fashioned hard work; how to deal with setbacks by making backup plans for such mishaps as getting injured, ripped off, or finding yourself plain lonely; and keeping expenses down. The "Stomping Grounds" section scans the various travel circuits (Far East, Europe, etc.) with brief and candid descriptions of each country (in Algeria, "Just the color of your skin may be a one-way ticket home...in a body bag. Bad scene, don't go.") and visa requirements.

"Traveling," says Olsen, "should be an individual statement; don't rely on a guidebook too much." This holds true for World Stompers. While it's an excellent primer, there are some glaring problems. The "Staying Well" chapter includes some very important advice, but never mentions AIDS, a rampant problem in many of the countries discussed. The information on some countries has clearly not been updated--Zimbabwe, for example, which has seen serious interracial violence for well over a year, is described as mostly harmonious. Most disappointing, however, is Olsen's attitude towards locals in the poorer countries. While he raves about meeting people, he's mostly referring to other travelers. He's cautious about befriending locals, an unfortunate attitude among even some budget travelers from affluent nations. Take it from this veteran world traveler, most locals are far more interesting--and interested in you--than Western travelers. Olsen is otherwise gung ho on taking risks; it's a tragedy he missed out on this one. --Lesley Reed

4 out of 5 stars Fun perspective of Travel.......2007-04-21

Not meant as a definitive guide for traveling, this book is a fun perspective of what's it like to travel to various parts of the world. With drawn maps of each area and cute symbols to designate good cities (smiley) smelly bad cities (frowny) and good vs. bad beaches, highlighted attractions, smoker-friendly, etc. etc. It gives you a feel of what it would be like in certain areas which can be good to target where to go, but also made me feel pre-disposed to a stereotyped vision of what to expect.
It's a fun guide to read before you go, but you'll need other books to reference for your travels.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and displays the author's love for life.......2007-03-19

As all the companies putting out guidebooks, even those aimed at backpackers, get blander and blander, there remains "World Stompers," which reflects the irrepresible personality of its (literally) larger than life author, Brad Olsen, a well-known writer especially in his native Bay Area, where I've had the pleasure of meeting him.

This book isn't perfect, with errors here and there (Belize is Afro-Caribbean on the coast but Latino inland, not Afro throughout), and a stoner focus that total straights will find extraneous, but it does capture the FEASIBILITY of traveling cheaply, working overseas, and living without a car so as to travel fairly constantly. Many Australians know how to do this but it remains news to some Americans, hence Brad's value in putting "World Stompers" together.

One star off for advocating soft scams such as sneaking into theaters without a ticket. Four stars for the fun Top Ten lists, cartoons, sidebars and wealth of details based on Brad's extensive crisscrossing of the planet.

4 out of 5 stars A good motivational read for prospective travellers!!.......2006-07-04

I managed to take a short (7 week) trek through South America during my college days and am currently planning a larger-scale open-ended world trip. This book offers great motivation and shall help one to keep the dream alive as they slave away to save up the cash. Based on my own travel experiences, I found this book to be highly accurate in its descriptions of how the general backpacker circuit functions. However, the chapters on the various individual circuits around the world can be entertaining (On the Stoner's Trail), but they barely scratch the surface. This book should be seen as a general introductory guide to travelling and (contrary to the author's recommendation) should be supplemented with an up-to-date guidebook for the region or country of interest (Lonely Planet and Let's Go are good ones).

This book is worth reading and, if nothing else, shall motivate one to complete the hardest task of travelling; setting off.

          1 out of 5 stars lousy information.......2006-02-27

this guy obviously wandered around aimlessly rather than do any actual travelling. he shows great disrespect for many countries and his book certainly is not the place to go for good unbiased travel information.

                    Book Description

Over the past decade, the study of microglial cells has gained increasing importance, in particular for those working in the fields of degeneration and regeneration. Microglia in the Regenerating and Degenerating CNS supports the assertion that understanding microglial biology could perhaps be pivotal for unraveling the pathogenetic mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer's disease, currently the most widely studied disorder of the central nervous system. In addition, microglia are also critical for understanding the sequelae of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, and for the vitally important post-traumatic repair processes. This book gives an up to date account of the role of microglia in degeneration and regeneration of the nervous system and also reviews microglial cell function and physiology. Cellular neurobiologists will find that this is a valuable guide to the importance and role of microglia in the CNS.

                        Book Description

This second edition of IUPAC's 'gold' book represents a very substantial enhancement of the first. In the ten years since the first edition was published, IUPAC has revised and updated most of the original definitions, and produced new glossaries of terms in many areas of chemistry not previously covered. These include stereochemistry, photochemistry, organic class names, atmospheric chemistry, catalysis, biotechnology, chromatography, toxicology and bioanalytical chemistry. The resulting compendium, like the first edition, contains only definitions approved by international consensus and thus can be regarded as truly authoritative.

                        * the definitive guide to chemical terminology, now significantly updated and expanded
                        * contains 7000 entries
                        * an essential reference resource for all practicing chemists

Originally conceived some thirty years ago in the context of quantum electrodynamics, renormalization methods have progressively developed into an indispensable analytical tool used in widely varying domains of physics and applied mathematics, such as By explaining the fundamental principles of renormalization theory such as scale invariance and universality which lie behind all the technical variations, this book aims to guide the reader to a more unified understanding of todays physics. The book is based on a very accessible main text, supplemented by several more specialized sections; it is intended for graduate students and for researchers who are seeking an introduction to a new area of electrodynamics or a general overview of the physical phenomena to which renormalization methods are applied.

                              Book Description

Hailed by the Washington Post Book World as "a modern classic," Robertson Davies's acclaimed Deptford Trilogy is a glittering, fantastical, cunningly contrived series of novels, around which a mysterious death is woven. The Manticore—the second book in the series after Fifth Business—follows David Staunton, a man pleased with his success but haunted by his relationship with his larger-than-life father. As he seeks help through therapy, he encounters a wonderful cast of characters who help connect him to his past and the death of his father.

4 out of 5 stars Great stuff if read as part of the trilogy.......2006-04-07

This is the second installment in the Deptford Trilogy, and my first bit of advice is that you read it in conjunction with Fifth Business, the first installment. I read Fifth Business years ago, and loved it, and struggled to remember the details of it as I began The Manticore. It isn't absolutely necessary to remember every word of the first in order to enjoy the second, but each one does help to accentuate the other.

The Manticore is great writing from a great writer. Davies prose is so fluid that they seem to absord into your mind with very little effort. He expresses complex thoughts in ways that are so graceful and elegant. And he's not afraid to deal with difficult themes; indeed, that seems to be his main purpose in writing. Yes, he tells a fascinating story, but his real aim is to get at the core of his characters, find out what motivates them and what makes them human. David Staunton is just the character to use for such an experiment. As an eminent lawyer, now undergoing psychoanalysis to determine where his life went astray, he puts himself on trial as if he were in a court of law and demands not just honest self-assessment but also evidence to support his conclusions about his own persona. It makes for a fascinating character sketch, and great reading.

There are no simple answers here to life's great questions, and that can be frustrating for those who want to be able to wrap a nice, neat bow around this book. Equally frustrating is the rather contrived ending, which includes the introduction of a new character whose purpose in the novel seems to be nothing more than to impart a valuable piece of wisdom to our main character. It also includes a journey into a deep cave, reminiscent of Plato's Republic, which is meant to reveal some profound life lesson but may just confuse and bewilder some readers. And, being the middle installment in a trilogy, this book doesn't have a proper beginning or ending. But that doesn't make it not worth reading. It just means that you should read parts one and three as well.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent and beautifully written.......2006-02-23

This is my first Davies novel and I suspect I started with the wrong one in the series; however, MANTICORE was a fascinating read. In this, David Staunton comes to Zurich for psychoanalysis with a Jungian therapist after his father dies in a very strange accident. (Boy Staunton, his father, died in an auto accident with an egg sized stone of pink Canadian granite in his mouth) You think we're going to get a payoff on the mystery, which we eventually do, but we first have to go through Davey's life and get his personality integrated. The descriptions are very rich, which is a good thing because the book is mostly narrative. Despite sounding tiresome, the book for the most part is interesting and an enjoyable and challenging read. If you are a first time reader of Davies like me, I would suggest you start with the first book of this series, FIFTH BUSINESS before you read MANTICORE.

                              2 out of 5 stars It's just filler.......2005-07-09

I think the problem with this book is that Davies wrote the trilogy so that each book could stand by its own and that they need not be read in a particular order. While that sounded like a great idea initially, it seems to only work in theory. At least a half of this book is a blatant recap of Fifth Business, and most of the rest of it is an extrapolation into the very mundane. Everything that is unique to this book (because all three books have some exclusive content) is very non-consequential, and can be inferred or predicted by reading Fifth Business. The book is basically a very poor remake of Fifth Business, lacking an original story (also keeping in mind that Fifth Business has at least twice as many events), depth (F.B. is engrossed in psychology, philosophy and religion- in this book, it's all almost an afterthought, despite it revolving around a man seeking psychological help), and a good character- Davy is so one dimensional compared to Dunny, and even to Boy! The only reason you should read this is to get the "extended ending" that isn't included in F.B.- it reveals who killed Boy. But I'm sure that will also be discussed in World of Wonders.

While Fifth Business is one of my all-time favorite books, I wouldn't recommend this book, even if you like the other books in the trilogy.

                              5 out of 5 stars Complex & interesting!.......2002-06-20

The life of the protagonist--whom we previously knew just an appendage to his father's colossal persona in Fifth Business--is analyzed. The story has many sockets within sockets and abundant psychological theory. Robertson Davies is so artful sn author that the information on archetypes never feels as though it came out of an encyclopedia. Rather, it is essential to the character's trajectory. Highly recommended. Makes me proud to be a Canadian!

                              5 out of 5 stars A Jungian perspective.......2001-05-07

The story is everything with Davies books. He captured me with the tale of David Staunton, who is only a minor character in Fifth Business.

As with Dunstan Ramsay, the narrator of the first book of the Deptford Trilogy, David Staunton is very much a character who needs to be brought back into balance from an extreme psyche. The book explores his eccentric character through Jungian psychology. Since Davies daugther is a Jungian psychologist, he no doubt used her as a resource in compiling the profile of Staunton.

I really find with Davies books, I find out more about myself, and new ways to view myself, through the characters that he writes about. Perhaps that is why I enjoy them so much.

"Marianne, the Magus, and the Manticore" is a fascinating and original fantasy. Sheri Tepper's imagery is terrific (the dinner made me hungry!), her prose is lucid and beautiful. A strong and vulnerable heroine, an equally strong and vulnerable hero, some pernicious villains and a great supporting cast. Not to mention one of the most inventive plots I have ever seen in a fantasy. I wish they'd reprint the entire trilogy!

All three of the Marianne books are full of wonder on every page. No one could fail to love Mariane, and delight in her incredably imaginative experiences, in the most original of alternate realities. As deeply enjoyable as the first two are, the third and final book, Marianne, the Matchbox and the Malachite Mouse is even better.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Marianne Trilogy.......2000-02-03

Marianne, Magus and the Manticore, is the first in the Marianne trilogy. I picked up a copy of this trilogy at Harrod's in London England when I was travelling in 1992. It's my favourite book, and irreplacable to me. I'm hoping that they will reprint this book at somepoint. I would love to purchase this for gifts. Her dream imagry is amazing. I work in a library and I particularly enjoyed the dream sequence where she is trapped working in the library. It's not unlike nightmares I've had! :-)

5 out of 5 stars An intricate, delicately crafted story........1998-10-24

I enjoyed this book so much I've reread it 6 times so far. Ms. Tepper entertains with detail as much as with plot. Her worlds are complete with rules and roles to play and she's able to involve the reader in each new environment within a few paragraphs.

The story is a bit dark, but a spark of hope and courage is always present to keep you reading.

My only displeasure was when the book ended. I enjoyed her second installment "Marianne and the Momentary Gods," nearly as much as the first and only regret that she didn't continue beyond three books.

The story in this book might have just as well come from my dreams. It is absolutely magical and keeps me coming back looking for a sequel.
