Circle of Life in East Africa Documented in Stunning Photographs.......2006-08-29

Pay heed to the subtitle of this book - "Natural Order on the African Plain" - as it does not shy away from images that may not show up in a children's book. I'm so glad this tome is still in publication, as it is a beautifully photographed document of life and death on the Serengeti Plain that stretches across Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa. Photographer Mitsuaki Iwago has captured the vibrancy of the mythic wildlife of this expansive area, in particular, the scope of the Great Migration, when over a million wildebeest and zebra travel hundreds of miles in search of water.

Iwago has a wondrous eye for detail, whether it's an uninterrupted pattern of zebras with their heads bowed to drink up from a watering hole or a gaggle of hungry hawks gnawing on the dead carcass of a lion. My personal favorites are any pictures showing adult animals and their children and the ones showing the Masai villagers living so naturally amid the wildlife. Even the eye-wincing scenes of death make for vivid reminders of how essential the cycle of life is on the plain. I have been lucky enough to have been on safari on the Masai Mara, which is the northern part of the plain, and the images in Iwago's book perfectly evoke my experiences on the range rover as we looked at life happen. This is a great coffee-table book at the right size not to be overwhelming.

This book has the pictures we wish we could have taken, excellent information, covers the serengeti from rain season to dry. Highly recommend for someone going to or who has been to the serengeti.

Picture book.......2004-01-27

The pictures are stunning.

But it is only a coffee-table book, and there it will remain, because pictures is all it is. You get no sense of place; it is impossible to orient yourself ... a nice picture of an elephant is just that, and this book provides no context whatever.

Wildlife and nature photography at its best!.......2002-01-21

These images bring the Serengeti to you. This being largely a pictoral tour of the Serengeti, words do it little justice. If you are an intelligent animal lover with a pulse, you will pay twice the cover price for this book.

Initial Book of Elena Oliverez Trilogy.......2004-10-04

This is the first book of Marcia Muller's Elena Oliverez trilogy, beginning the exploits of her Hispanic art museum curator. The second is: "The Legend of the Slain Soldiers" and the third and final is "Beyond the Grave" (co-authored with Bill Pronzini who is now Muller's husband). Actually, I think this trilogy gets better book by book, so I actually liked this one the least of the 3. But, it's interesting to see Muller write of protagonists other than Sharon McCone--demonstrates her breadth of talent. She also authored the Joanna Stark trilogy about an art security expert. This series is heavily into the world of Hispanic art but is heavily dosed with the personalities of its highly divergent characters--highlighting human foibles. It is not a continuing saga like the Stark trilogy, but is connected in time and in the characters involved. Interestingly, Muller gives Elena a cameo appearance in her latest Sharon McCone adventure: "The Dangerous Hour." I find Elena to be a very appealing character and admire Muller for delving into a somewhat different world for this trilogy; it's worth reading the entire trilogy. Enjoy!

Noted for its dramatic scenery, this remote province with its large Maya population has long fascinated travellers, especially its ancient Maya cities of Palenque, Toniná, and Chincultic. The unique Maya folk culture of Chiapas has survived in the highland villages, but the area also has a less well-known Spanish heritage. For over three hundred years, Chiapas was ruled from Guatemala, and today this legacy lives on in its language, culture, and rich variety of Spanish colonial buildings. These range from sophisticated urban churches, convents, and palaces, to old Dominican missions and vernacular village churches in the countryside.

Absolute Must for any Chiapas interest.......2001-08-17

I am the author of the "Adventure Guide to the Yucatan," a guidebook to the ruins and sites of Mexico's fascinating peninsula. I have been a fan of Richard Perry and his wife's writing since reading the "Maya Missions" book they did on the many ruined colonial missions in the Yucatan. This title is equally worthwhile with vivid descriptions of history and much detail on the colonial remnants of the Spanish church, in seldom-visited Chiapas. And their pen and ink drawings are evocative of the romance and tragedy of the conquest. A great book to make your Chiapas visit even better.

I have used the Pharmacotherapy Handbook as a substitute for the large 3,000+ page DiPiro textbook required for my College of Pharmacy. Now I am able to read the required readings in a few hours, rather than a few days, and I still feel that I am getting the same core information. The best analogy I could think of, is that it is like CliffNotes for the DiPiro Textbook. Good book.

This is a great book. I love how it isn't just about the drugs, but gives background on the diagnosis that you are treating. I think it is layed out well, and find it very useful. I notice a lot of pharm students are reviewing this but I think it is good for practitioner's as well. However, don't think this will fit in your labcoat pocket, it could but it is sorta heavy.

A very good read!.......1997-12-03

A very good read! Highly recommended for those new to the field. Introduction provides a nice summary of results to date. The majority of the contributions are very accessible. Survey and recent result focus makes it eay to recommended for graduate students just beginning their careers in the field.

Other volumes on the subject matter have appeared. Some of it less accessible eventhough authored by arguably more famous individuals in the field.

On that note, contributions are lacking from some of the famous American authors in the field. (No doubt this will cause a minor stir at the major conferences!) But this could be good! As I said most articles are accessible with some graduate trainning. And in any case the Americans and the "more famous" get their due in the references.

A section is devoted to the applications of singular trajectories to the optimisation of batch reactors. The theoretical paart based on the Martinet case concerns the singulatrity analysis of singular trajectories in sub-Riemannian geometry. An algorithm is gibven to evaluate conjugate points and a final chapter discusses open problems. The volume will interest mathematicians and engineers.

It is a complete book, deals with one the important subjects forbut in modern control theory, with very recent matematicals tecnics, requires something of experience in algebras of sub- riemman and disciplines when reading it, suitable for students of first year in its Phd.

This son of Pennslyvania Quakers was sent forth to obtain an education in preparation for an eventual career in the law, but then he came upon the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Samuel Richardson, whose novels inspired Brown to embark upon a literary career of his own. Wieland . . . a wonderfully written story.......2005-09-12

Out of the three novels, I have only read Wieland, but if the other two are as good as this one, I would definitely be willing to read them.

Wieland is one of my all-time favorite books. This novel looks at how religion, the unexplainable (or seemingly unexplainable), and madness affect ordinary people. There are no monsters lurking in the shadows, but the novel does look at how people deal with horror in "real" situations.

Dark Patriarch.......2001-02-16

I was pleased to see that the editorial review of this (typically gorgeous) Library of America series entry stole my breath. Brockden Brown's fascinating and brutal gothic novels are the true foundation of what's dark about American literature. Perhaps even more irresponsible than Poe in his fascination with the grotesque (spontaneous combustion, anyone?), Brockden Brown long anticipates Poe and Freud (and Faulkner and Jackson and ...) in his bleak explorations of our most terrible fears, and our worst secrets. Without scenes like the axe murder in "Wieland," would we have King's (or Kubrick's) "The Shining"? Impossible. Let's hope that the Library of America will add a Volume 2 to this one, including Brockden Brown's lesser known (and impossible to find) works like "Ormond."

a seminal classic.......2000-10-01

Charles Brockden Brown is known as the "Father of the American novel" and is considered to be our first professional author. At least by those who do consider him at all. To be perfectly frank, I'd never really heard of the guy before now. But this excellent gothic tale, which was based on the true story of a farmer who thought that angels had commanded him to kill his own family, is so clearly the forerunner of the fiction of everyone from Hawthorne and Melville to Poe and Henry James to H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard right on up to Shirley Jackson and Stephen King, that it is hard to believe that his work is not better known nor taught more often.

Wieland, his first novel, tells the story of a religious fanatic who builds a temple in the seclusion of his own farm, but then is struck dead, apparently by spontaneous combustion. Several years later, his children, in turn, begin to hear voices around the family property, voices which alternately seem to be commanding good or evil and which at times imitate denizens of the farm. Are the voices somehow connected to a mysterious visitor who has begun hanging around? Are they commands from God? From demons? Suffice it to say things get pretty dicey before we find out the truth.

This is a terrific creepy story which obviously influenced the course of American fiction. Brown develops an interesting serious theme of the role that reason can play in combating superstition and religious mania, but keeps the action cranking and the mood deliciously gloomy. The language is certainly not modern but it is accessible and generally understandable. It's a novel that should be better known and more widely read, if not for historical reasons then just because it's great fun.

GRADE: A

Almost good enough.......1999-03-13

The Library of America is providing a valuable service to all devotees of American literature by providing reliable texts of so many important American writers. Here, they have done an excellent job of presenting the three best novels of America's first professional novelist. However, Brown only wrote six novels altogether, and anyone who cares about "Wieland," "Edgar Huntly," and "Arthur Mervyn" will probably also want "Ormond" in the package, as well as the fragments "Memoirs of Stephen Calvert" and "Memoirs of Carwin, the Biloquist."
