Travel information book.......2006-08-02

I have always found the Moon Handbooks to be good reference material. I had the 2001 version of the same book but of course things change in a few years time. The current version is about half the size of the old one and I have not had the time to discern the difference in the two books. Perhaps the new one is more of an abridged version. In any event it is still a very useful tool and will be used in our upcoming trip to that area.

Moon Eclipsed.......2006-05-02

This edition of the Moon Nevada guide, along with the 2006 overhaul of the Moon Colorado guide, seems to represent the ongoing decline of a once-great publishing idea. While other guidebooks offered only the best-known tourist areas for middle-class and above budgets, Moon was offering comprehensive tours of entire states and plenty of options for budget travelers. But now Moon seems to be catering more to richer tourists and more glamorous vacations. This Nevada edition concentrates more on Las Vegas and eliminates many off-the-beaten path towns, even places like Beatty, gateway to Death Valley and famous for its own local mining and ghosttown history. The message seems to be that National Parks-minded and history-minded tourists don't matter beside the glitter of Las Vegas.

This new edition is hugely disappointing........2005-10-17

Way back in the early 90s I bought my first copy of Castleman's Nevada Handbook. I was astonished at the breadth and depth of the book, and I was delighted at the author's idiosyncratic but engaging style. I liked the book so much I actually wrote Castleman a letter of praise (this was pre-Amazon). As new editions came out every three years or so, I bought each one. (I visit Nevada annually.) Unfortunately, someone decided this new edition needed to be a mere ghost of previous editions. I can't fathom what the idea was here. It wasn't just to make room for more Vegas information, because this edition is much shorter than previous ones. Reading over comments from other readers, I notice that the positive reviews seem to come from people who never saw the previous editions. Those who'd seen earlier versions of the book are, like me, deeply disappointed. What a shame that some editor somewhere decided "Hey, I've got an idea --- let's take this great book and make it WORSE."

I liked this book.......2005-08-17

I looked at this in the book store, saw that the first 129 pages are just about Las Vegas, and almost didn't buy it.

But it is a pleasure to read. We used it to choose an RV park along Rt 80 in Northern Nevada, and the discriptions just were funny.

We saw things that we would not of had we not bought this book.

Disappointing.......2005-03-22

Because I loved previous editions of this book, I bought this new edition in anticipation of a trip back to the fabulous state of Nevada. Despite my former enthusiasm for the book, I have to give this edition a less than glowing review, mainly because many of my favourite places in the state were deleted, in order to expand coverage of just about every casino in Las Vegas, Reno and Tahoe. It's still well-written, but no longer can we read about such enigmatic places as Jarbidge, Searchlight and many of the other friendly, quirky, off-the-beaten-track towns and villages that make Nevada such a wonderful place to explore. Therefore, real Nevada-philes may want to give it a miss and try to get hold of a copy of the previous edition.

The problem of controlling the output of a system so as to achieve asymptotic tracking of prescribed trajectories and/or asymptotic rejection of undesired disturbances is a central problem in control theory. In the standard formulation of output regulation, one assumes knowledge of an exosystem which generates signals to be tracked and disturbances to be attenuated. The case when the exogenous system is a harmonic oscillator is, of course, classical. In this case, to solve the output regulation problem is to track, or attenuate, a sinusoid of known frequency but with unknown amplitude and phase, using only error measurement feedback. This is in sharp contrast with alternative approaches, such as exact output tracking, where in lieu of the assumption that a signal is within a class of signals generated by an exogenous system, one instead assumes complete knowledge of the past, present, and future time history of the trajectory to be tracked.

The book gives a unified treatment of output regulation theory for linear and nonlinear systems and addresses a number of issues which were left open in the earlier works on the subject. In particular, it describes an approach to structurally stable regulation which unifies and extends a number of prior existing results. It also addresses the issue of robust regulation, i.e., the issue of achieving regulation in the presence of parameter uncertainties ranging within a prescribed set.

The Simple Review.......2007-08-22

Quite a good story with interesting characters and a well-paced plot.

I did have a few nits with it, though. (Mainly because I've made the same mistakes in my own writing. ^_^) The main one was the constant subject-verb, subject-verb, subject-verb sentences. Quite a few times I noticed over half the sentences in any one paragraph beginning with "he," "she," and the like. And, of course, once I saw that, I couldn't un-see it, so it bothered me for the remainder of the book. In general, the writing is good, but a little more variety in sentence structure would have been wonderful.

And I felt bad for John for losing his brother before being able to become friends with him again. There's quite a gulf between me and my own brother that I doubt will ever be bridged, but seeing it from an outsider's perspective is sad.

I would definitely read this author again.

A thriller!.......2007-06-29

David Baldacci gives us Rufus Harms, a man unjustly imprisioned for 25 years, and an ex-cop, John Fiske, turned lawyer turned investigator again when his brother, Michael Fiske, a Supreme Court clerk, is murdered after inquiring into an appeal that came to the Supreme Court from Rufus. Sara Evans, another SC clerk, who was good friends with Michael Fiske becomes emotionally involved with John Fiske and they team up to try to solve the mystery of who would murder Michael Fiske. Along the way they are searching out the truth about Rufus. There are twists and turns and surprises. David Baldacci gives an a behind the scenes look at the Supreme Court and the surprising power the clerks actually have. You will have a hard time putting this book down once you open it.

If anyone has read Jack Olsen's book, THE TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY OF GERONIMO (ELMER)PRATT, you'll see the parallels in this fiction book to Jack Olsen's true crime story of Mr. Pratt. This was a fabulous book and should receive 5 stars from everyone that reads it. Spending 25 years in a prison for a crime you didn't commit is horrific. Can you imagine losing that many years of your life. Geronimo Pratt lost those many years, 26 to be exact. He is the only man that sued the FBI and the police and won and it was a long battle. "They" tried to kill him in prison to shut him up. You must read the book after you've read this fiction novel. I really have to wonder if David Baldacci read Jack Olsen's book before writing this novel. Excellent...superb!

Typical Baldacci, typically pretty good!.......2006-10-07

David Baldacci has a knack for writing fiction that sucks you in and holds you no matter what the story. Part of the talent is to introduce interesting characters. This book is no exception. Sara Evans is a clerk working for a Supreme Court justice. She is quite close to another clerk (Michael Fiske) who works for a different judge. Michael asks Sara to marry him but Sara really loves Michael's brother John, who Sara has only seen once and never officially met.

Michael comes across an appeal that intrigues him (to say exactly why would be a spoiler and it is only revealed very late in the book as to exactly what intrigued him) so much that he pulls it out before it is filed and goes to visit the requestor. That happens to be a Rufus Harms who is serving a life sentence in an Army prison for murdering a girl.

When Michael goes to see Harms, practically all Hell breaks loose and Harms realizes he is in danger himself and some mysterious evil guys from the prison murder Michael. Apparently there was some secrets in Harms appeal that some powerful unknown men do not want known.

Michael's murder is investigated by his brother John (an ex-cop who is now a defense lawyer for the lowest of the low criminals) and he enlists the aid of Sara who was close to Michael and knows some things about Michael. Sara is instantly in love with John and the more they start investigating the more they put their lives at risk from the unknown powerful men. Additionally, the police start to suspect John of the murder of his brother especially when he is named as the sole beneficiary of Michael's life insurance.

Meanwhile Rufus Harms has escaped prison from some of those men that tried to kill him.

So we have tension throughout to see if Rufus will survive as well as John and Sara before the evil guys get them.

There is a lot of good information about what goes on behind the scenes at the Supreme Court. A good read

Great thriller!.......2006-07-26

I loved this book. It had some historical references, which tends to bring a story to life as one can relate them to familiar or current events. It didn't have typical hollywood ending, but it was a good ending nonetheless. The main-character was a bit underdeveloped, mentally and emotionally; thus I couldn't really feel sorry or bad for him.

I highly recommend "A New Adventure Every Day." Bless David Silberkleit who has given us (almost) two adventures for every day of the year in this little treasure of a book. This is one you'll keep by your bed and refer to often as a reminder of how very much we all have in front of us, right now! Get out there and live.

Sneaky ways towards a more adventurous life.......2005-10-24

Do you fantasize about being Indiana Jones, Steve Irwin, or Richard F. or Isabel Burton? Would you love to live a life of romance, creativity and risk, meeting exotic people, exploring new and as yet uncharted lands, stepping outside the box? At the same time, are you held back from this by being too old to join the service, or having limited funds, only a little time, a 9-to-5 job and/or cold feet? Welcome to a new life!

Using only things you might find around the house (my one cavil about the book is that it assumes you're a homeowner, though renters and nomads might find it useful also) you too can join the ranks of the adventurers! Simply by taking tiny risks in your mundaine existence, you too can be living in a theme park, honing explorer and adventure skills, improving your relationships and people sense, getting in touch with your body, and much, much more! Ok, so now I sound like an infomercial. But this book does have a lot of fun things to do that get you up and out and becoming more engaged in your surroundings that could serve as baby steps towards bigger and better things, as well as making everyday life more interesting.

I'd check it out if I were you.

I really enjoyed David Silberkleit's "New Adventure Every Day." He not only has me think about my life and what I am doing each day, but also to see things in a different light - to feel more, to breathe and enjoy each moment. I would highly recommend this book.

Great book for anyone who wants to live life to the fullest.......2003-12-12

I've read a bunch of self-help books (100's at least) - and while many of them are good, most are focused on techniques, exercises, writing down your values, etc. That's great, but none of them have given me what this book has: the ability to go and play and be happy. And really, that's all I ever wanted out of those other self-help books.

David's book is amazing, because through his ideas, you understand that you can be happy now... in this moment... wherever you are. You can have adventure now. I've spent most of my life creating suffering - either through reliving the past or projecting into the future - and David's book finally turned on the switch. You can't live in the past or the future... you need to live NOW! And in understanding that, you can have so many adventures, so much fun and joy - that you'll finally realize that happiness, adventure, success, joy, etc. isn't in the future, it's NOW!

Best of all, if you get that, David's book holds more than 541 adventures. If you get the concept behind David's book, you'll discover that there are adventures everywhere in your life, regardless of your age, education, financial situation, relationship, etc. David has written an amazing book that I recommend to all of my fellow self-help "junkies" who want to stop doing so many "techniques" and start living a fun, adventurous life!

An emotional story about a simple man and his three friends, all of whom are just looking for honest people in life and a place where they can all just live together and mind their own business. A bit like an eighteenth-century version of "Friends" or "Party of Five."

The Adventures of David Simple (1744), Fielding's first and most celebrated novel, went through many English editions—including a second edition heavily revised by her brother Henry—and was translated into German and French.

The guileless hero, having been cheated by his hypocritical younger brother, sets out to find a “real friend.” In recounting David's search, the novel depicts the derision with which almost everyone treats his sentimental attitudes to human nature. An important secondary character acts as a mouthpiece for some provocative feminist ideas.

This edition, the fourth in the series Eighteenth-Century Novels by Women, makes the original text of the novel available for the first time since 1744. It also reproduces Fielding's much darker sequel, Volume the Last (1753), in which a string of disasters befalls David and his family.
