This is an extended and careful synthesis of theory and field research, which provides an illuminating analysis of how environment influences the distribution and abundance of animals. The work also provides the first comprehensive account, illustrated by numerous case histories of P. J. den Boer's theory of "spreading the risk". The authors, by shifting the emphasis away from abstract theory and back to considerations of animals in their complex natural environments, have provided a useful guide for ecologically sound conservation and management.

4 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with his guide to Guatemala.......1999-01-28

Richard Harris has the uncanny ability to tell his readers the important facts, allude to the interesting titbits and list the necessary information that travelers need, all while knowing what to discard as irrelevant - an excellent writer's skill seldom mastered by most travel guide writers. You can't go wrong with his guide to Guatemala. His chapter on the ancient Capital of Central America, Antigua, is one of the best found today in any guide book. He not only illuminates the history of this important Spanish colonial town (an UNESCO world heritage site and a must see) he also lets you know the current contemporary situation of Antiqua. While I was in Guatemala (1/1999) I checked out his recommendations of lodging, restaurant, nightlife and they are "right on the money". He has an excellent recommended reading section and he is strong in his editorial support of eco-tourism. However, there are some obvious weaknesses : the maps are few and crude, and the index is entirely anemic. Recommend.

          5 out of 5 stars Australia: a pictorial feast.......2007-04-20

These are photographs of aspects of this vast country that many Australians never see. Contrast the reds of the desert with the greens of the rainforest. The magnificence of Uluru with the tranquillity of Dove Lake. The ageless beauty of the rain forest with the beauty of our beaches.

Australia is a beautiful place. This collection of photographs by Peter Lik makes that beauty more accessible to all of us.

Highly recommended to those interested in images of Australia.

Immense, haunting, unique in geology and life forms, the outback looms to the north and west of Australia's urbanized southeast coast. For two years, photojournalist Bill Bachman recorded both this forbidding landscape and the people who dwell--and even thrive--in it, compiling the images for his remarkable book, Australian Colors. Deftly avoiding all the usual clichés--there is not a single kangaroo shot--Australian Colors mixes stunning vistas of twisted cliffs and sweeping plains with more intimate portraits of outback culture. Here are the jackaroos and jillaroos (cowboys and cowgirls) who work the vast outback ranches, the sunken-jawed fishers of isolated creeks and shoals, the well-lubricated celebrants at a bush horse race. Bachman's striking photographs are well matched by his lengthy, colorful captions, which go far beyond typical coffee-table book text. In addition, each of the book's winningly titled 19 sections ("Trees as Men Walking," "Dogs? They Run the Country") begins with a short essay by award-winning Australian novelist Tim Winton, whose evocative, often humorous prose perfectly complements Bachman's images. There is one question that has to be asked, however: why are Australia's aborigines--the outback's original inhabitants--so underrepresented in Australian Colors? By revealing so little of them, perhaps Bachman reveals more of outback culture than he intends. --Rebecca Gleason

5 out of 5 stars A true feeling for the "outback".......2000-01-06

This book is magic for people who, like me, love the Australian "outback" and want to take a little bit of it home. But for all those who have never been, and can perhaps only dream of going, then the next best way of experiencing its mystery, its stark beauty, not to mention the warmth of the locals, is through Bill Bachman's marvellous photos. They capture his love for the country and believe me, the colours are real! Outback Australia truly is this red.

              Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors in Australia face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors to Australia? How important is Australia compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors vary from one country of origin to another in Australia? On the supply side, Australia also exports color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors. Which countries receive the most exports from Australia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors in Australia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors for those countries serving Australia via exports, or supplying from Australia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Australia fits into the world market for imported and exported color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Australia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Australia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Australia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

                            Book Description

Real-Time Management of Resource Allocation Systems focuses on the problem of managing the resource allocation taking place within the operational context of many contemporary technological applications, including flexibly automated production systems, automated railway and/or monorail transportation systems, electronic workflow management systems, and business transaction supporting systems. A distinct trait of all these applications is that they limit the role of the human element to remote high-level supervision, while placing the burden of the real-time monitoring and coordination of the ongoing activity upon a computerized control system. Hence, any applicable control paradigm must address not only the issues of throughput maximization, work-in-process inventory reduction, and delay and cost minimization, that have been the typical concerns for past studies on resource allocation, but it must also guarantee the operational correctness and the behavioral consistency of the underlying automated system. The resulting problem is rather novel for the developers of these systems, since, in the past, many of its facets were left to the jurisdiction of the present human intelligence. It is also complex, due to the high levels of choice – otherwise known as flexibility – inherent in the operation of these environments.
