    Book Description

Ecologists are aware of the importance of natural dynamics in ecosystems. Historically, the focus has been on the development in succession of equilibrium communities, which has generated an understanding of the composition and functioning of ecosystems. Recently, many have focused on the processes of disturbances and the evolutionary significance of such events. This shifted emphasis has inspired studies in diverse systems. The phrase "patch dynamics" (Thompson, 1978) describes their common focus.
The Ecology of Natural Disturbance and Patch Dynamics brings together the findings and ideas of those studying varied systems, presenting a synthesis of diverse individual contributions.

      Description:
Ripley's K-function was used to investigate the changes in spatial pattern among trees in a semi-natural mixed deciduous forest in Denmark over 50 years, from 1948 to 2001. Trees larger than 10cm diameter in breast height (dbh) were mapped at 10-year intervals in 16 blocks within two former compartments. At the start of the observation, trees were found to be regularly distributed at distances less than 10m. This pattern changed with time in different ways, depending on tree density at the beginning of the recording. Tree density has a greater influence on the number of recruits than on the number of dead trees. New recruits were significantly aggregated and positively correlated with dead trees, which suggests that regeneration occurred in canopy gaps. Compartments with many new recruits therefore showed a change in pattern towards more random distribution or even towards aggregation. In blocks with high basal area and few recruits, the pattern changed only slightly. Past management was found to be important in generating the patterns of tree distribution.

          Book Description

Orchids: The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Oncidium is an important addition to any library, and persons interested in orchids will want this comprehensive volume. It is the only book devoted exclusively to the Oncidium alliance that shows plants and flowers meticulously painted to actual size in color from living orchids by expert botanical illustrators. Definitive essays for each of the sections have been written by renowned experts on Oncidium. The book has been edited by Mark W. Chase, one of the world's top authorities on this group of orchids. This cloth-bound, hardcover volume has 148 pages. Most pages are printed in color on 100 lb. dull-coated paper. The book measures 9½ x 13 inches.

The remarkable orchids of the Oncidium alliance are among the world's showiest and most popular orchids. Native to the Americas, most grow from sea level up to 12,000 feet on trees as epiphytes, although some grow terrestrially. The many hybrids of Oncidium have contributed to their popularity. Often seen in home-design magazines, those little yellow flowers have become recognizeable to the general public, but there are many magnificent species that are not so well known in the Oncidium Alliance. It is these, as well as the better known species, that are the subject of this book. There are more than 850 plants and flowers meticulously painted by a group of expert botanical illustrators. Many new species have been added since the original edition, and many more species names are given. The book includes the latest taxonomy based on botanical DNA as well as essays by orchid experts with specialized knowledge of each group in the Oncidium alliance. Included is a DNA "tree" that shows the relationship of the species, plus a comprehensive bibliography and a functional index.

5 out of 5 stars The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Oncidium.......2007-05-26

I bought 3 copies, 1 for my mother and the other for 2 friends of hers. They loved the book since it has a clear clasification of oncidiums drawn on real sizes. The flower you see in the book is a real life size, which is perfect for them as they are taking classes on orchideology. Also the price of the book was great since we saw that same book on another web site and the price was 150% over what we paid. They would recommend to buy this book if what you are looking for is to learn how to classify oncidiums. Hope this helps. sonia b

A wonderful and clear, fully updated pictorial overview of all botanical variations within the genus Oncidium (and some related genera). Great stuff for breeders and collectors of Oncidium!!

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing work of Art.......2003-09-30

This second edition of the Encyclopedia surpasses the first ( It's reselling here for more money then its original selling price.) The artwork and fine detail is breath-taking. The book even has 7 plants that are now orphans thanks to the new DNA studies by Mark Chase. This a valuable resource - a must have.

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate oncidium picture book.......2000-06-23

This excellent pictorial guide is both invaluable as a resource and unmatched in artistic quality. Tackling the systematics, or which species is which, of the Oncidium alliance will no doubt continue for quite some time. This book brings the orchid world 1000 miles closer to that goal. Beautiful artistic renditions of named and unnamed species grace every page of this large tome. This makes an excellent resource for the orchids enthusiast/expert or the best darn coffee table book on oncidiums. I use it as both.

Good, but not heavily detailed maps. Good, though brief history coverage.Irritating $$ signs instead of real prices.Mailboat info. Not complete coverage on cheap hotels. Lists sites but nothing off the beaten track. Plenty of detailed trip planning info, could get by with just this one book if not traveling on a tight budget. For those who research prior to trips, this is worth the addition to your library, but you'll need other books to complement it for in-depth research.

                    Book Description

Who are the Native Americans? When and how did they colonize the New World? What proportion of the biological variation in contemporary Amerindian populations was "made in America" and what was brought from Siberia? This book is a unique synthesis of the genetic, archaeological, and demographic evidence concerning the Native peoples of the Americas, using case studies from contemporary Amerindian and Siberian indigenous groups to unravel the mysteries. It culminates in an examination of the devastating collision between European and Native American cultures following Contact, and the legacy of increased incidence of chronic diseases that still accompanies the acculturation of Native peoples today.

                                    Book Description

This self-contained book examines results on transfinite graphs and networks achieved through a continuing research effort during the past several years. These new results, covering the mathematical theory of electrical circuits, are different from those presented in two previously published books by the author, Transfiniteness for Graphs, Electrical Networks, and Random Walks and Pristine Transfinite Graphs and Permissive Electrical Networks.

Two initial chapters present the preliminary theory summarizing all essential ideas needed for the book and will relieve the reader from any need to consult those prior books. Subsequent chapters are devoted entirely to novel results and cover:

                                    * Connectedness ideas---considerably more complicated for transfinite graphs as compared to those of finite or conventionally infinite graphs----and their relationship to hypergraphs

                                    * Distance ideas---which play an important role in the theory of finite graphs---and their extension to transfinite graphs with more complications, such as the replacement of natural-number distances by ordinal-number distances

                                    * Nontransitivity of path-based connectedness alleviated by replacing paths with walks, leading to a more powerful theory for transfinite graphs and networks

                                    Additional features include:

                                    * The use of nonstandard analysis in novel ways that leads to several entirely new results concerning hyperreal operating points for transfinite networks and hyperreal transients on transfinite transmission lines; this use of hyperreals encompasses for the first time transfinite networks and transmission lines containing inductances and capacitances, in addition to resistances

                                    * A useful appendix with concepts from nonstandard analysis used in the book

                                    * May serve as a reference text or as a graduate-level textbook in courses or seminars

Graphs and Networks: Transfinite and Nonstandard will appeal to a diverse readership, including graduate students, electrical engineers, mathematicians, and physicists working on infinite electrical networks. Moreover, the growing and presently substantial number of mathematicians working in nonstandard analysis may well be attracted by the novel application of the analysis employed in the work.

                                      Book Description

At the time of its release in 1860, Charles Baudelaire's "Artificial Paradises (Les Paradis Artificiels)" met with immediate praise. One of the most important French symbolists, Baudelaire led a debauched, violent, and ultimately tragic life, dying an opium addict in 1867. This book, a response to Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an Opium Eater, serves as a memoir of Baudelaire's last years.

In this beautifully wrought portrait of the effects of wine, opium, and hashish on the mind, Baudelaire captures the dreamlike visions he experienced during his narcotic trances. These hallucinations, sometimes exquisite, sometimes disturbing, and the delusions of grandeur that often accompanied them, constitute the Paradis Artificiels, the gorgeous yet false worlds of ecstasy that eventually led to his ruin. Contrasting the effects of hashish and opium with those of wine, Baudelaire concludes that "wine exalts the will, hashish destroys it" and makes idlers of all those who use it.

This new translation of a controversial book provides fascinating reading as well as a key to the mind of a great writer.
