            Book Description

Despite our deep interest in mortality, little is known about why some individuals live to middle age and others to extreme old age. Life span, mortality, and aging present some of the most profound mysteries in biology. In Longevity, James Carey draws on unprecedented data to develop a biological and demographic framework for identifying the key factors that govern aging, life span, and mortality in humans and other animals.

Carey presents the results of a monumental, twelve-year, National Institute on Aging-funded research project on the determinants of longevity using data from the life tables of five million Mediterranean fruit flies, the most comprehensive set of life table studies ever on the mortality dynamics of a single species. He interprets the fruit fly data within the context of human aging and the aging process in general to identify the determinants of mortality. Three key themes emerge: the absence of species-specific life span limits, the context-specific nature of the mortality rate, and biodemographic linkages between longevity and reproduction.

A powerful foundation for the emerging field of biodemography and a rich framework for considering the future of human life span, Longevity will be an indispensable resource for readers from a range of fields including population biology, demography, gerontology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and medical research.

This book will be of interest to researchers, university graduates and teachrs in the fields of biology, geerontology, and demography. it is alos recommended as a supplementary text for courses and seminars on gerontology, demography and ecology.
This book summarizes the most significant facts and ideas on the phenomenon of finite life span. It features an interdisciplinary approach based on quantitative analysis of survival regularities in human populations and animal models. The survival analysis is shown to be of major significance in tackling a wide range of issues including: whether a life span is programmed, whether there is an absolute superior limit for the duration of life, the relative role of social and biological factors for human life span, why do women live longer then men, what are the prospects and means for prolonging life span.

                Book Description

The versatility of the emulsion copolymerization reaction and the ability to control the properties of the final latices have led to rapid expansion both in the quantity of polyvinylacetate and vinyl acetate-acrylic copolymer latices and in their applications. Vinyl Acetate Emulsion Polymerization and Copolymerization with Acrylic Monomers provides a collection and logical organization of the published data - much of it formerly found fragmented throughout various journals and little of it referenced in general emulsion polymerization books. To date, no one source has offered chemists and polymer, surface, or colloid specialists the "big picture" of polyvinylacetate-based latices. Integrating established knowledge with the latest research developments, this book provides the background for understanding the mechanism and kinetics of emulsion polymerization initiated in the aqueous phase and some of the practical problems of latex production. The author presents an overview of industrial practices, new applications, and all of the fundamental material - avoiding theoretical controversies. With in-depth discussion of the ingredients found in most industrial recipes, Vinyl Acetate Emulsion Polymerization and Copolymerization with Acrylic Monomers helps eliminate costly and time-consuming "trial and error" practices. It serves not only as an introduction for those new to the field, but also as a valuable reference for researchers and applied scientists in both industry and academia.

                      Book Description

Emulsion polymerisation produces high value polymers in a low cost, environmentally friendly process. The drive to develop environmentally benign production methods for polymers has resulted in widespread development and implementation of the emulsion polymerisation technique. In addition, when combined with novel polymerisation mechanisms the process can give rise to a range of polymer products with particularly useful properties.Emulsion polymerisation is a complex process, governed by the interplay of both chemical and physical properties including polymerisation kinetics and dispersion stability. Successful industrial application relies on understanding and controlling those properties. By carefully explaining the principles of the reaction, based on well-designed experimental investigation, Chemistry and Technology of Emulsion Polymerisation provides a practical and intuitive explanation of emulsion polymerisation. In the development of industrial processes, coupling that understanding with everyday practice can be a further difficult step, so the book emphasises a clear, comprehensive and straightforward discussion to illustrate how the principles relate to practical application.Written for research chemists, technologists and engineers in the polymer, fine and specialty chemicals industries, and in university or government laboratories, this book will be particularly valuable to those early on in their careers. The comprehensive and straightforward coverage will also ensure it is an important resource for advanced courses in emulsion polymerisation.

                                  Book Description

This volume contains a selection of articles based on lectures delivered at the IMA 2001 Summer Program on Geometric Methods in Inverse Problems and PDE Control . The articles are focused around a set of common tools used in the study of inverse coefficient and control problems for PDEs and related differential geometric problems. This book will serve as an excellent starting point for researchers wanting to pursue studies at the intersection of these mathematically exciting and practically important subjects.

In these rare personal essays, Soseki defines the role of art in light of the isolation of the modern world. Each essay includes personal anecdotes that act as allegories about the fate of Japan.
In her introduction, Soseki expert Dr. Inger Sigrun Brodey masterfully unravels the complexities of the two essays.
